Emerald City Awaits in New Wicked: For Good Art
Image
Universal Pictures has revealed new art for the highly anticipated Wicked: For Good, which is set to open in theaters on November 21, 2025. The art features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible in Emerald City.

Earlier this month, NBC announced that the Academy Award-nominated Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will lead a one-time-only two-hour Wicked special event at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Nov. 6 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on NBC and streaming the next day on Peacock.

In celebration of the Universal Pictures sequel, Erivo and Grande will be joined by their co-stars and other surprise guests to perform many songs from the first movie — and maybe, just maybe, a little bit from the upcoming film.

Wicked, released last November, became a global phenomenon and grossed more than $750 million at the...

Wicked 2 Update Reveals Major Nessarose Changes That Fix A Major Problem From Original Musical
Image
Two massive changes have been revealed to the story of Nessarose (Marissa Bode) in Wicked: For Good, and these changes fix a significant problem from the original musical. The second and final movie adapting the Broadway musical will continue the stories of Nessarose, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera), and other key characters after Wicked's dramatic ending.

There was a positive reception to the first movie casting a disabled actor, Bode, to play the role of Nessarose. However, there has been considerable speculation about how disability representation will be handled in Wicked: For Good's story since the second act of the stage musical sees Nessarose walking through Elphaba's magic.

In an interview with Cbn (via BroadwayWorld), composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz indicates that Nessarose will not walk in Wicked: For Good. He explains that he and writer Winnie Holzman have learned from the Pwd (people with disabilities) community...

Wicked: For Good Has Already Beaten the First Movie in 1 Major Way Months Ahead of Release
Image
Audience demand for Wicked: For Good is seemingly at an all-time high. Universal has just revealed how many times the first trailer for the upcoming sequel was viewed online during its first 24 hours of release.

Per Variety, Universal is reporting that the first trailer for Wicked: For Good was viewed 113 million times in its first 24 hours. Not only is this 38 million more than the first trailer for Wicked earned over the same timeframe, but it's also higher than the trailer debuts for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Mufasa: The Lion King, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which were also marketed as all-audience blockbusters. The record for the biggest trailer launch of all time remains Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine at 365 million views in 24 hours. While trailer views aren't necessarily an indicator of what is to come at the box office, it's hard not to see this trailer launch as anything but promising.

‘Wicked: For Good’ Trailer Teases Glinda and Elphaba’s Fates as Dorothy Arrives
Image
With the first Wicked: For Good trailer released online, the forthcoming movie is aiming to be as popular as the first one.

Universal Pictures shared the trailer for director Jon M. Chu’s feature that hits theaters Nov. 21 and stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. The actresses graced the CinemaCon stage in April for the studio’s presentation to exhibitors, where the Wicked: For Good footage was initially screened.

Wicked: For Good centers on the two witches facing the consequences of their previous decisions and its impact on their friendship. The footage teases the first look at Dorothy, albeit without revealing her face, and also includes the yellow brick road, a wedding and no shortage of flying monkeys.

“Elphaba, they’re coming for you,” Glinda warns near the end of the trailer.

Rounding out the cast are Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

‘Wicked’ Casts Spell With $230M In Profit To Fly In As No. 5 Most Valuable Blockbuster Of 2024
Image
Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024 that we’re about to disclose, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as...

Marissa Bode Says Nessarose’s Storyline in ‘Wicked: For Good’ Will Be “Less Harmful to Disabled People” Than Original Broadway Version
Image
Just before Wicked actor Marissa Bode accepted her honor as this year’s recipient of the ReelAbilities Film Festival’s Spotlight Award on Thursday night, her Oscar-nominated co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo made a surprise video appearance.

In a taped message, the duo celebrated Bode’s historic performance and her dedication to disability inclusion as the first authentically cast disabled performer to play Nessarose — Elphaba’s (Erivo) sister and a character who uses a wheelchair — in the Wicked musical’s 20-plus years. “Marissa took the role of Nessarose to new heights and brought authenticity to the role like never before,” Erivo said in the prerecorded video.

“We were beyond thrilled to be a part of such a groundbreaking film and the inclusion it created for people with disabilities is going to open doors for actors for years and years to come,” Grande added. “It was such an honor to...

Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo Reveal First ‘Wicked: For Good’ Footage as Dorothy Makes Debut
Image
Filmmaker Jon M. Chu bewitched thousands of theater owners in Las Vegas Tuesday when sharing footage of Universal’s highly anticipated Wicked: For Good, the second title in his two-part on-screen adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical.

And of course, the presentation wouldn’t have been complete without assistance from stars Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda the Good Witch, and Cynthia Erivo‘s Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West. They took the stage with Chu and producer Marc Platt inside the cavernous Colosseum Theater at Caesars Palace, where exhibitors are spending this week watching Hollywood studios present their upcoming slates.

“We took a shot, and we divided Wicked into two parts,” Platt said. “Now we have the privilege of doing it all again with Wicked: For Good in November.”

Erivo noted of last year’s hit film, “I may have snuck into a sing-along or two.” She added,...

‘Wicked: For Good’ First Look: Galinda Exclaims “Elphaba, They’re Coming For You!” – CinemaCon
Image
Universal closed out its CinemaCon presentation Wednesday with an emotional first look at Jon M. Chu’s Wicked: For Good, the second part of his Oscar-winning musical fantasy. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were onstage with Chu and producer Marc Platt.

No musical performances ala Erivo and Grande’s at the Oscars, but the trailer shown to theater owners inside the room was epic enough. And they went nuts for it.

Wicked: For Good will continue the story of Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Wicked Witch of the West, formerly known as Elphaba. It hits theaters domestically November 21.

“Elphaba, I know you’re out there,” says Galinda in a voice-over. We see the pink witch emerging from her emerald castle. Elphaba drops on the balcony. “This is about the Wizard and I,” the green witch exclaims. We see Galinda putting the big tiara on. Prince Fiyero and his men...

First ‘Wicked: For Good’ Poster Spotted at CinemaCon
Image
Oh, what a celebration Wicked fans will have today, as the first look at the Wicked: For Good poster has been spotted at CinemaCon.

The second installment in Jon M. Chu’s big screen adaptation of the award-winning Broadway musical is slated to arrive in theaters in November. In the poster, the two witches from Oz, Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda (formerly known as Galinda), stand atop their own cliff’s edge. The yellow brick road and the wizard’s palace in Oz, the setting for part one’s grand “Defying Gravity” finale, separates them in the middle.

Erivo’s Elphaba looks right at home in her full “wicked witch” glory, while Grande’s Glinda resembles the Glinda the Good fans of The Wizard of Oz are used to. The poster’s tagline, “You will be changed,” is a reference to the iconic duet from...

Why Peter Dinklage Didn't Have The Best Time Working On Wicked
Image
Making big-budget blockbusters can be an isolating process, especially if you're a performer used to working with other actors and physical sets who is, all of a sudden, confined to a recording booth or something similar. This is what Peter Dinklage experienced when he worked on "Wicked," Jon M. Chu's massively successful (and Oscar-winning) adaptation of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's long-running Broadway musical. In the film, Emmy-winner Dinklage plays Doctor Dillamond, a talking goat who teaches at Shiz University and earns the affection of the young green-skinned witch Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), but according to an interview Dinklage had with Cinema Express in November 2024, he didn't totally love the experience, because he was not physically on set.

"It was a bit of a lonely process, recording in a sound booth apart from the rest of the cast, but it's such an honour to be part of something...

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Open Oscars With 'Wicked' Medley
Image
It's no surprise that the biggest night in movies opened with a performance from one of the biggest films of the year. To open the 97th Academy Awards ceremony, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo took the stage to perform a show-stopping medley of songs from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and, of course, the duo's box office hit Wicked.

The Oscars opened with a bittersweet, heartfelt tribute to the city of Los Angeles, which is currently rebuilding in the aftermath of January's devastating wildfires, before ceding the stage to Ariana Grande. Dressed appropriately in red, Grande delivered a stunning rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," followed by Erivo's performance of "Home" from The Wiz. Then, the two actresses reunited on-stage to bring down the house with "Defying Gravity," their signature piece that closes Wicked's first act.

Two forces behind the hit ’90s show My So Called Life are collaborating for a new project.

Winnie Holzman, who created My So Called Life, and also wrote the script for the stage and film version of Wicked, revealed that she is developing an HBO family drama titled The Applebaum Curse.

Claire Danes is set to star in the series as the lead role, while Winnie will serve as an executive producer and writer.

The Applebaum Curse will be an “ongoing one-hour drama series about a dysfunctional family.”

Claire Danes and 'My So-Called Life' Creator are Developing a New HBO Series

Claire Danes (Homeland) is re-teaming with her My So-Called Life creator and producer for a new HBO TV series, per Variety. The Applebaum Curse will star Danes, while Winnie Holzman (Wicked) will write and act as showrunner. Both she and Danes are executive producers on the show, which is in early development. The logline says the show is an "ongoing one-hour drama series about a dysfunctional family with Claire Danes as the lead role."

When recently asked why no one has tried to reboot or remake My So-Called Life, Holzman replied:

"It’s interesting that you’re asking me that. I am writing something that I’m hoping to do with Claire. It’s not a reboot in the traditional sense, but I think Claire Danes and I back together would be a kind of version of that. … It’s a completely different story, but we’re hopeful that we’re gonna work together again.

Whether you watched it or not, every teenager from the 1990s remembers the teen drama series My So-Called Life. Created by Winnie Holzman and starring Claire Danes, the cult favorite drama explored the tribulations of being a teenager and dealing with friends, guys, parents, school, and any unpredictable thing life could throw at you. My So-Called Life helped define a generation, and now Holzman and Danes are reteaming for The Applebaum Curse, a new drama coming to HBO.

In early development, The Applebaum Curse finds Winnie Holzman writing the script and serving as the project’s showrunner. Claire Danes is set to star and joins Holzman as an executive producer. According to HBO, The Applebaum Curse revolves around a dysfunctional family, with Danes in the lead role.

The impact of My So-Called Life cannot be understated, which is why it is baffling that the show only lasted for one season before being canceled.

Teen drama My So-Called Life, created by Holzman and starring Danes, aired on ABC for one season in 1994-1995. Set at the fictional Liberty High School in a fictional suburb near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, called Three Rivers, it followed the emotional travails of several teenagers in the social circle of main character Angela Chase, played by Danes in her breakout role. Claire Danes and ‘My So-Called Life’ Creator to Reunite for New HBO Drama Series
Image
Claire Danes is set to reunite with “My So-Called Life” creator Winnie Holzman for a new drama series in the works at HBO, TheWrap has learned.

The new series, titled “The Applebaum Curse,” is billed as an ongoing one-hour drama series about a dysfunctional family with Danes as the lead role, per the official logline. The show is still in early development at the network, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.

Danes is attached to star in and executive produce the series, while Holzman would serve as writer, showrunner and executive producer for “The Applebaum Curse.”

The new series would reunite Danes and Holzman three decades after they worked together on “My So-Called Life,” which ran for just one year from 1994-95 on ABC. In the show, Danes starred as Angela Chase, a teen from a fictional Pittsburgh suburb grappling with social issues that made for a tumultuous adolescence.

Despite only running for one season,...

The Oscar-nominated adaptation of the beloved stage musical is hitting Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, on March 21. Ready to head back to Oz?

“Wicked” hit theaters at Thanksgiving, which is making this a particularly lengthy journey from the initial exhibition to “free” streaming. In between then and now, the movie has been released on digital platforms and on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Uhd. The movie has amassed over $727 million worldwide, an impressive feat for any movie but especially for a Broadway-style musical. The second part of the adaptation, “Wicked: For Good,” also directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, hits theaters on November 21.

“Wicked: Part One” was an adaptation of the 2003 Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, as well as the original 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. It is currently nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress...

Image
Three decades after My So-Called Life finished its first and only season, its creator and star are teaming up again.

Claire Danes is set to star in an HBO drama from Mscl creator Winnie Holzman. The project, titled The Applebaum Curse, is in early development at the premium cable outlet. Holzman will write the script and serve as showrunner, with Danes set to star. Both will executive produce.

HBO describes The Applebaum Curse as a drama series about a dysfunctional family, with Danes in the lead role.

My So-Called Life premiered on ABC in September 1994 to widespread critical acclaim; it was Danes’ breakout role, winning her a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination for lead actress in a drama series. Holzman was also Emmy nominated for writing the pilot episode. The show suffered modest ratings, however, airing against NBC’s Must-See TV comedies on Thursday nights, and was canceled after a single season.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Really Wanted To Play One Wicked Character
Image
Songwriter and Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda really, really wanted to appear in Jon M. Chu's recent "Wicked" adaptation — but I bet you'll never guess which role he was gunning for.

During an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in February 2025, Miranda, the man behind Broadway hits like "Hamilton" and huge cinematic songs like "We Don't Talk About Bruno" from "Encanto" revealed that he basically begged Chu for a specific and incredibly small role in the adaptation of Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's acclaimed Broadway musical. "In the opening number of the show, this one munchkin runs out and goes, 'Is it true you were her friend?'" Miranda told Colbert. "Because, man, I don't know if you've seen a live production of 'Wicked,' but sometimes they really put some sauce on the ball when they deliver that line. It's where the story starts. So I was like,...

How 'Wicked: For Good Has Much More Space To Develop Its Story Explained
Image
Wicked co-screenwriter Dana Fox revealed that the second part in the saga, Wicked: For Good, will go even deeper in exploring Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda's (Ariane Grande) relationship with one another. Speaking with Screen Rant at the Writer's Guild of America awards, Fox explained that For Good will expand upon the second act of the original Broadway musical, which is considered by some to be less exciting than act one. Fox stated:

"Part Two actually has a little bit more room to be able to explore. Part One was pretty packed in terms of what was in the first act of the play, and all the things we knew we had to do. We explored, we deepened, and we tried to give you moments that you didn't have in the play... But in the second movie, there's a little bit more space for interpretation and space to go...

Ariana Grande Reportedly Offered Role in 'Spaceballs 2'
Image
Ariana Grande has been the talk of Hollywood lately thanks to her standout performance as Glinda the Good in last year's Wicked. This awards season, she's up for multiple trophies, including Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, where she'll compete against the likes of Zoe Saldaña and Isabella Rossellini, to name a couple. Her stock has risen so much that now the former Nickelodeon star is apparently being offered a slew of roles, including one in the upcoming Spaceballs 2.

According to a new in-depth profile on Grande published by The Hollywood Reporter, the actress and singer is so hot right now following the success of Wicked that she's been approached about numerous follow-up roles. These include, the profile says, "a disaster wedding comedy, a female detective romp set in a Housewives-style reality show, and a Spaceballs sequel." However, Grande, now 31, isn't too eager to just accept anything that comes her way.

Image
Wicked had a series of professionals both on screen and behind the screen, which is why it was a big success. Marc Platt, who was the producer of the film, has a wide experience in theater and the movie industry, but he had a different idea for Wicked.

The 2024 hit is based on the 2003 Broadway musical, which has had multiple renditions all over the world since. Although the musical tells the whole story with an intermission, director Jon M. Chu divided the screen adaptation into two separate features. However, during the annual Producers Guild of America, Marc Platt revealed he wanted the film to be released all at once with an intermission, per The Hollywood Reporter.
