The 20th Century Studios spy thriller, which was released in theaters in April, stars Malek as Charlie Heller, “a brilliant, but deeply introverted decoder for the CIA whose life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack. When his supervisors refuse to take action, he takes matters into his own hands, embarking on a dangerous trek across the globe to track down those responsible, his intelligence serving as the ultimate weapon for eluding his pursuers and achieving his revenge.”

In addition to Malek and Fishburne, the film stars Rachel Brosnahan as Heller’s wife along with Caitríona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, Adrian Martinez, Danny Sapani.

James Hawes directs from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, based on Robert Littell’s novel.

A Road House remake is coming to Amazon Prime Video later this year, but there's a lot more to it than just your average remake. 

Besides a seemingly new plot and new location, the film has also been embroiled in drama in recent months, from casting choices to producers. 

Here's everything we know about the reboot of Road House and the drama involved in making the movie.

Why Are They Remaking Road House? 

The reason why they decided to remake the 1989 cult classic remains unknown, but talks of the remake have been going on for nearly ten years. 

In 2015, Variety reported that Ronda Rousey would be taking on the classic role of the bouncer, previously played by Patrick Swayze. 

At the time, MGM was ready to start production in 2016, having already done other cult classic spinoffs, such as the Rocky spinoff Creed.

Things are getting rowdy behind the scenes at “Road House.”

On Wednesday, Variety reported that the new “Road House” could have avoided a streaming debut, but before production began Amazon gave “the filmmakers and (star Jake) Gyllenhaal” a choice: $60 million budget and theatrical; $85 million and streaming. They chose the latter.

“The filmmakers” presumably refers to director Doug Liman and producer Joel Silver.

“They all took the money,” a source told Variety.

Amazon declined comment on this story, as did a rep for Liman. Reps for Gyllenhaal and Silver did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment.

A bigger budget typically means a larger upfront payday for the filmmakers and their star(s). Without a theatrical run, those principals won’t see nearly as much on the back end. The best of both worlds would be getting more upfront money and then turning in such an undeniable blockbuster that...

Jake Gyllenhaal is the Mr. Rogers of bar brawls in the first look at Doug Liman’s updated take on the Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliott 1989 classic, Road House.

In the trailer, which is nearly two and a half minutes of nonstop knockouts, Gyllenhaal leads as Elwood Dalton, an ex-UFC middleweight fighter who takes one too many hits, and it’s not clear he can — or wants to — get back up. He’s living out of his beat-up car and participating in underground fighting rings when he’s found by Jessica Williams’ bar owner, who invites him to come work for her.

Oscar and Tony-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal is officially set to star in “Road House,” a reimagined take on the classic movie starring Patrick Swayze, for Amazon’s Prime Video.

Doug Liman will direct the new movie, from a script written by Anthony Bagarozzi & Charles Mondry. After producing the original film for MGM in 1989, Joel Silver is back on board to produce the reimagining for his company Silver Pictures.
