J. Edgar Hoover
John Edgar Hoover was an American law enforcement administrator who served as the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States. He was appointed director of the Bureau of Investigation - the FBI's predecessor - in 1924 and was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935, where he remained director for another 37 years until his death in 1972 at the age of 77. Hoover built the FBI into a larger crime-fighting agency than it was at its inception and instituted a number of modernization's to police technology, such as a centralized fingerprint file and forensic laboratories. Hoover also established and expanded a national blacklist, referred to as the FBI Index or Index List.

Edit
  • Trivia
The reason why Hoover is known as "J. Edgar" and not "John Edgar" is because there was another John Edgar Hoover living in Washington D.C. who had a bad credit history. In order to avoid confusion and scandal, Hoover started going by his first initial.
  • Quotes
[on communism] The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous they cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to the realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst.
