The Outlaw Music Festival began nine years back as a single event in Scranton, Pennsylvania, featuring Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Sheryl Crow, Chris Robinson, and Lee Ann Womack. It’s slowly morphed into a traveling fest that brings Nelson and a rotating cast of top-grade support acts to amphitheaters across America every summer, and they leveled up significantly last year by placing Bob Dylan in the penultimate slot every night of the run.

FX’s The Bear Season 4 has been out for a week streaming on Hulu.
The series, which was renewed for a fifth season yesterday, has become known for its needle drops as well as its rotation of guest stars each season. While she didn’t have a song featured in Season 1, the show has come to include at least one Taylor Swift song since Season 2, because it wouldn’t be a heartfelt moment for Ebon Moss Bachrach’s Richie and his daughter without help from the songstress.
Season 2 of the show contained “Love Story” in the seventh episode, “Forks,” and Swift’s “Long Live” was featured in Season 3.
Find the full soundtrack to The Bear Season 4 — including songs from St. Vincent, Oasis, Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Bishop Briggs, The Ronettes, Pretenders and more.

Even though Woody Harrelson considers himself an honorary member of the Grateful Dead — “Why not?” — he hasn’t always served the band’s best interests. In fact, he told Stephen Colbert this week, he almost stopped one Dead concert in its tracks.
Improbably for a man of Harrelson’s habits, he wasn’t always a Deadhead. He was introduced to the scene by “a guy who was doing some carpentry for me” who asked Harrelson if he knew the Dead. “Not really,” shrugged the comic actor. That wouldn’t stand, and the handyman arranged a trip to northern California to catch a concert.
“We imbibed some fungi,” Harrelson confessed, as one does at such events. After an indeterminate haze of hanging out, he says, they went backstage to talk “to everybody back there.” How did Harrelson’s carpenter have backstage access to a Dead concert? Unknown.

Distilling the musical legacy of the Grateful Dead into one night is no small feat, and into three hours is an even taller order. But Don Was — longtime president of Blue Note Records, respected multi-instrumentalist and musical director for the Jan. 31 MusiCares Persons of the Year event — was up to the task, curating an inspired lineup of devotees, including Billy Strings, The War on Drugs, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan and Wynonna Judd, and longtime collaborators like John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby and Was himself, who’s a touring member of Bob Weir’s Wolf Bros playing his signature upright bass.
As Was tells it, the set list came together organically, with the artists choosing which songs to play in concert with show producer Rac Clark and MusiCares’ Laura Segura. The end result ran the gamut from the popular (“Truckin’,” performed by Yoakam) to the ambitious (“Terrapin Station...

A hollow, lifeless conference hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center is just about the last place you would expect to find a Grateful Dead tribute concert on a Friday night. But it was there that MusiCares put on a show for the ages, honoring the band at its Persons of the Year gala with founding members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart in attendance (drummer Bill Kreutzmann could not make the trip and delivered a message by video) and a slew of acolytes who understood the assignment.
Typically, the MusiCares dinner is a polite affair, with guests seated respectfully for most of the performances, save the all-star finale, a staple of the event. And that’s not to say that previous Person of the Year recipients — which include Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Barbra Streisand — didn’t have their own rabid fanbases in attendance. But the Deadheads just do things differently.

This year’s Grammy week will be looking a little different, as the show will take place shortly after Los Angeles was devastated by wildfires in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Music’s biggest night will mark the first awards show to take place in L.A. since the tragedy began on Jan. 7, and many of the typical Grammy events have been canceled as the usual players — including Spotify and the major labels — redirect resources to aid wildfire relief efforts.
However, a handful of events will carry on with a charitable component, including the starry Clive Davis party and MusiCares tribute concert. Check out this year’s still-on Grammys celebrations below.

It’s one last waltz for Robbie and Marty.
Variety reports that Martin Scorsese is directing the filming of a tribute concert dedicated to his late friend and collaborator Robbie Robertson for a concert film. The Blackbird Presents (Outlaw Music Festival)-produced concert, called “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson,” will take place Thursday at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Plans for the release of the future film have not been set.
Robertson, the legendary musician and songwriter best known for his work with the legendary roots rock outfit The Band, died in 2023 at age 80. His relationship with Scorsese went back to the 1970s, when Scorsese directed “The Last Waltz,” the 1978 star-studded concert film commemorating The Band’s final performance. Robertson then worked as a composer, music supervisor, or consultant on many of Scorsese’s films, including “Raging Bull,” “The Color of Money,” “Casino,” and “The Irishman.

Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.

When the makers of Community approached three-time Grammy-winner Bruce Hornsby about having Chevy Chase sing a parody of his biggest hit, the singer-songwriter assumed that the joke would be on himself — turns out he was streets behind.
In the Community Season One episode “Advanced Criminal Law,” Chase’s piano skills and singing voice carry the B-plot about his character Pierce Hawthorne’s abject lack of talent. When Annie Edison recruits Pierce to write a school song for Greendale Community College on the false premise that Pierce knows how to write songs and has done it before, Pierce is forced to confront his creative shortcomings as he struggles to devise an original hit for his alma mater. Then, with a bit of encouragement from his favorite study buddy, inspiration strikes, and Pierce premieres “The Way It Goes” at the unveiling of the Luis Guzmán statue, thus giving the school — and Community itself — it’s unofficial,...

The summer of 2015 was a culminating moment in Bill Walton’s life. He’d been seeing the Grateful Dead, in all of its iterations, for 48 years by that point. He’d been to hundreds upon hundreds of shows, but like so many Deadheads, the series of 50th-anniversary shows in Northern California and Chicago (billed as Fare Thee Well) were going to be monumental: the first time most of the group’s surviving members would play together in years, and the last time it would happen.

Bruce Hornsby and the experimental chamber ensemble, yMusic, have come together to form a new project, dubbed BrhyM. They’ll release their first album, Deep Sea Vents, on March 1st via Zappo Productions / Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the lead single,”Deep Blue,” is out today.
First meeting at the Eaux Claires Festival in 2016 — where they performed back-to-back sets — Hornsby and yMusic have been collaborating for several years now, releasing tracks and appearing live together. Deep Sea Vents, though, will be their first full-length collaborative effort, and if the single “Deep Blue” is any indication, fans can expect the album’s 10 tracks to present inventive arrangements, blending funk, folk, soul, and orchestral instrumentations.
For example, “Deep Blue” is carried by its funky bassline, but colored by melodic interjections from pianos, strings, and even an electric sitar. Speaking about the track Hornsby said: “yMusic may be the funkiest, groovingest chamber group in all the land!

Two of the most successful specialty films of the year expand this weekend and a handful of others jump into an arthouse market that’s seen few new entrants in recent weeks as wide release piled on wide release.
Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City jumps from a blockbuster six-theater opening ($800k over three days) last weekend for Focus Features to 1,675 locations today. A24’s Past Lives by Celine Song, which debuted in early June on four screens, expands to 296. They’re joined by a documentary on epic cyclist Greg LeMond ahead of the Tour De France, and the first theatrical release by Wayward Entertainment, launched in late 2021 by former Revolution Studios CEO Vince Totino and former Orion Pictures President John Hegeman and focusing on genre titles.
Wayward is opening God Is A Bullet, directed and written by Nick Cassavetes, on 375 screens. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as a detective whose ex-wife is...

They were all backed by a house band led by Rolling Stones touring drummer Steve Jordan and Fab Faux bassist Will Lee.

The Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion will return to the Tennessee-Virginia border Sept. 8-10, bringing a wide-ranging group of performers to the birthplace of country music for its 22nd year.
Margo Price and Nickel Creek top the three-day lineup set to perform along State Street in downtown Bristol, and both will have relatively new albums to showcase for fans. Other artists on the bill include some well-established roots favorites like Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers, Watchhouse (f.k.a. Mandolin Orange), Larkin Poe, and the Mavericks. In the birthplace of Western philosophy, Bill Murray dropped some wisdom on a receptive audience.
“I swear to you,” he told the crowd in Athens, quoting Walt Whitman, “there are divine things more beautiful than words can tell.”
Divine things, like the music of Bach, Shostakovich and Ravel, the melodies of Gershwin and Bernstein, the songs of Stephen Foster and Van Morrison.
For one magical evening in 2018, on terrain once walked by Socrates and Plato, Murray was joined by cellist Jan Vogler, violinist Mira Wang, and pianist Vanessa Perez for a concert combining music and poetry. The film New Worlds: The Cradle of Civilization captures that performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus near the Acropolis, the culmination of a tour that took the quartet to Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the U.S., and across Europe to their final date in Greece.

Clearly, it’s time for martinis, as Murray and renowned cellist Jan Vogler pass cocktails to violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez to start their final interview of the day. Bruce Hornsby and James Mercer teamed for a performance of their recent song, “My Resolve,” as part of The Late Show’s Play at Home series.
Adhering to social distancing guidelines, Hornsby and Mercer recorded the song separately, with the former laying down piano and lead vocals, and the Shins frontman providing harmonies and backing vocals. The song’s chorus grapples with defeat and determination, with Hornsby and Mercer singing together, “In my resolve I move the rock/Or maybe fall down trying/My ineptitude stares me down/In its face I cower.

Tove Lo performed a shadowy version of her sleek new single “Sweettalk My Heart” on Wednesday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.
The singer opened dramatically, singing the minor-key electro-pop tune with the backing band nearly hidden behind her on a dimly lit platform. She swiveled as the song swelled — from an electric piano progression that recalls the silky, rolling keys from Bruce Hornsby’s “The Way It Is” to a grooving, percussive chorus with belted vocals.

For his first LP since 22, A Million, Justin Vernon dials back the avant-pop extremes a bit, giving human larynxes and other acoustic instruments more room to flex amidst a landscape of synths and vocal-processing veils. You wouldn’t guess it from opening minute or so of the similarly-comma-smitten i, i — which begins with an abstract stretch of studio patter, AutoTuney sputtering and fire-extinguisher-blast beats. It feels like a doubling-down on the future-pop abstractions, before all that drops away, leaving just Vernon’s naked voice, alone and multi-tracked, on on “iMi,...

Bon Iver previewed their upcoming fourth LP, i,i, with a deluge of new songs: “iMi” (which features James Blake among its massive cast of collaborators), “We,” “Naeem,” “Marion” and “Holyfields,” (comma intentional) and “Salem.”
“iMi” opens with a heavily processed Blake vocal warble before settling into a tranquil nylon-string guitar pattern, soft electronics and a wall of Justin Vernon’s soulful vocals. “We” rides a bluesy bassline and a heavy sax section, with Vernon navigating his lower falsetto. “Naeem” finds Vernon belting over a gospel piano, building to a choral-stacked chorus.
