Film Review: Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Stephen Chow
Image
It’s always good to bow out leaving people wanting more. Yet if you were to tell us back in 2004 that “Kung Fu Hustle” would be the penultimate time we would see Stephen Chow in front of the camera then very few would believe you. His cinematic popularity was at its apex with international recognition coming through the release of “Shaolin Soccer” and this subsequent follow up. With only “CJ7” to come a few years later. Alongside “Shaolin Soccer” this madcap action-comedy both sends up and homages the martial arts cinema that Stephen Chow loves so much and serves as an ideal entry point to his world of Mo Lei Tau comedy.

Kung Fu Hustle is screening on New York Asian Film Festival

Sing (Stephen Chow) is a petty crook who aspires to part from the feared axe gang. Along with his sidekick Bone (Lam Chi-chung), he inadvertently stirs up...

The top 10 Brucesploitation films
Many films tried to capitalise on the popularity of the late, great Bruce Lee. Here are our ten favourites...

1973 was the year that kung fu broke in America. The release of the popular Five Fingers Of Death (aka King Boxer) in March set the fuse and when Enter The Dragon (the first Hong Kong martial arts film co-produced by a major Us studio) followed in August, it exploded.

Although Bruce Lee was billed as a co-star in Enter The Dragon alongside John Saxon because casting an Asian actor in the lead role of an American film was unheard of at the time (and would remain so until 1982 when Sho Kosugi topped the bill for Revenge Of The Ninja), it was Bruce who captured the public's imagination. His amazing look and style, his astonishing talent for acting, writing and directing, and his unparalleled martial arts ability made him an icon for...

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 2 (79-60)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you...

‘Badge of Fury’ Review
Stars: Jet Li, Zhang Wen, Shishi Liu, Michelle Chen, Yan Liu, Collin Chou, Stephen Fung, Raymond Lam, Ka-Yan Leung, Siu-Lung Leung, Yili Ma | Written by Tan Cheung | Directed by Tsz Ming Wong

Jet Li, star of countless classic martial arts movies, teams up with the producer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kung Fu Hustle for Badge of Fury (aka Badges of Fury) a crime drama caper that is more caper than crime… Even though, at least on paper this would seem like a perfect Hong Kong action flick:

When a spate of murders erupt across Hong Kong, two kick-ass cops are assigned to the case. Chaos soon escalates when they reach a dead end and the detectives must play a deadly game to lure the killer out.

You see from that synopsis I was expecting something special, along the lines of New Police Story or (an undoubtedly sub-par) Infernal Affairs,...

Review: Badges Of Fury Is Barely A Jet Li Movie At All
Martial arts fans relishing the chance of seeing Jet Li square off against an assortment of villainous screen legends under Corey Yuen's action direction may well be left disappointed, as Badges of Fury really wants to be a goofy comedy vehicle for Wen Zhang and Michelle Chen. On paper, Badges of Fury seems to have all the ingredients of an old school Hong Kong action classic, with Jet Li playing the grizzled partner to Wen Zhang's rookie as they tear around Hong Kong on the trail of a prolific serial killer. The cast boasts a number of proven martial arts stars, including Wu Jing, Collin Chou and Bruce Leung, sharing the screen with a host of cameo appearances from hot young talent like Huang...

The New The Grandmasters International Trailer
A full-length international trailer for Wong Kar-Wai’s upcoming film The Grandmasters has been released. After five years in the making, and almost a year and a half since we got a teaser trailer, the martial arts project about Ip Man looks stunning.

Though the trailer is in Chinese the film looks like it has visuals as impressive as the kung-fu fighting within. An outstanding foreign film that deserves some attention starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Zhang Ziyi, tells the story of Ip Man (Tony Leung), who is best known as the trainer of legendary star Bruce Lee.

Kar-Wai’s first action movie since his 1994 film Ashes of Time will be released in his native Hong Kong and will get a December 18th release in China, but has no American release date. Its international distribution rights are held by Annapurna Pictures, so it wouldn’t be unrealistic to expect a late fall release.

Filming of “Princess and Seven Kung-fu Masters” (Sammo Hung) Video
Princess And Seven Kung Fu masters is the latest project from director Wong Jing (City Hunter) and will star kung fu legends Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah.

Plot

During the early years of the Republic era, in the North-East region of China, the people are suffering from the power struggle among the local Warlords, bandits, and Japanese invaders. Warlord Lam (Sammo Hung), is not a leader of great vision, but having a patriotic heart, stands firm in his own beliefs, despite the several solicitations and temptations from Japan.

The only ‘paradise’ within the region is ‘Lucky Town’, the one place where no one dared to attack. Rumors abound that this place is cursed, for whenever anyone attempted to invade Lucky Town, they would disappear and vanish without a trace. In reality, there are seven kung fu masters who have retreated into the shadows and resided here. They are Manysons (Eric...

New Teaser Trailer for Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters
Check out your second look at some rockin’ new footage from Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmasters”, which features Tony Leung Chiu Wai (“Lust, Caution”) as Ip Man fighting a gazilion guys in the rain. There is voiceover narration talking about kung fu, but it’s in Chinese. That’s over pretty quick, and then it’s just the action. Wong Kar-wai hasn’t done action since “Ashes of Time” in the ’80s, and it looks like he’s been saving up all that kung fu-ness for now, with the help of action choreographer extraordinaire Yuen Woo-ping. Welcome back, Wong! In martial arts there is no right or wrong, only the last man standing. The film co-stars Ziyi Zhang, Chen Chang, Cung Le, Hye-kyo Song, Siu-Lung Leung, Julian Cheung, Benshan Zhao, and Qingxiang Wang. Originally slated for 2011, the film has now been pushed back to either late 2011 or early 2012. Who knows with Wong,...

Kung-Fu action comedy Gallants: R2 DVD review
Director: Derek Kwok & Clement Cheng. Review: Adam Wing. With Gallants, Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng invite you on an old-school Hong Kong martial arts journey with a 21st century twist. Gallants brings together a winning cast of old and new, featuring Shaw Brothers veteran Chen Kuan Tai (The Tea House), Bruce Leung (Kung Fu Hustle), and a scene-stealing turn from Teddy Robin. Wong Yau Nam, Mc Jin, and Jj Jia are on hand to represent the new age, but it’s the spectacular action choreography by Yuen Tak that’s most likely to appeal to the kids of today. Gallants took home the Audience Award at the 2010 New York Asian Film Festival, and while Shaw Brothers fanatics are sure to lap it up, will Gallants appeal to a younger demographic raised on Tony Jaa and The Rock? Cheung (Wong Yau Nam) used to be a tough bully as a kid,...

Fantastic Fest Review: Gallants
Please welcome back contributor Rod Paddock as he gives us the lowdown on one of this year's Fantastic Fest features.

If you ever wondered what would happen if The Karate Kid's Mr Miyagi went back to the Cobra Kai and opened a can of whoop ass, you will love Gallants.

Gallants is the story of 98-pound weakling Cheung (You-Nam Wong), assigned by his bosses to evict a group of elderly tenants from the establishment they have rented. The story starts with the typical "weakling meets bully" theme, but concludes with an interesting set of twists and arcs. During his travels to evict the family, Cheung gets himself in trouble picking on a boy half his size. The boy's elders show up to teach Cheung a lesson. During Cheung's beating, an older gentleman carrying a bag of rice happens along. The elders postpone Cheung's beating to taunt the old man.

Nyaff 2010: Gallants Review
[Once again thanks goes to Alexander Thebez for the following review.]

When I first read or heard about Derek Kwong and Clement Cheng's Gallants, I thought the movie would be funnier.  I was pleasantly surprised that aside from being a great, entertaining martial arts flick, Gallants is also a movie brimming with a lot of heart.

Gallants, which stars Hong Kong's many heavyweight contenders, follows the story of Cheung (Wong Yue-nam), an overall wimpy loser, who is assigned to rural China to settle a property dispute. Cheung finds himself in a long conflict with local property developers who are trying to take over an old teahouse. The teahouse, which used to be a reputable martial arts studio, belongs to Dragon (Chen Kuan-tai) and Tiger (Bruce Leung). Both Dragon and Tiger have been struggling to keep the place afloat, while they wait for their legendary master Law (Teddy Robin) to wake up from a coma. At this point Cheung's existence becomes...

The New York Asian Film Festival To Honor Huang Bo, Simon Yam And Sammo Hung! And They're Moving To Fancy New Digs To Do It!
I am not nearly foolish enough to compete with a Grady Hendrix penned news release so I'm just going to copy and paste:

Like Vandals storming the gates of Rome, the New York Asian Film Festival rampages through the Film Society's Walter Reade Theater June 25 - July 8, unleashing an orgy of the latest and greatest pop masterpieces Asian cinema has to offer. For nine years, the Nyaff has been North America's leading festival of popular Asian cinema but now it's teamed up with the Film Society of Lincoln Center to also become North America's fanciest!

America's art-house theaters normally show an anemic sliver of what Asian cinema has to offer but the Nyaff's 2010 line-up is a brawny slab of 35 blockbusters and break-out hits that audiences in Thailand, China, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan actually buy tickets to watch.

The full line-up will be announced in May, but this year's festival will have three major events,...
