A gentle tale of growing pains and self-discovery, “Mama Boy”, Arvin Chen’s third feature film, presents itself as a comedy, with a lurid poster and an odd-looking protagonist but it turns out to be more than the sum of its parts.
“Mama Boy” is screening at Udine Far East Film Festival
Xiao-hong (Kai Ko) is the classic mama boy, a cocooned young man of almost 30 years of age, with an overprotective mother, but to call him a spoiled boy would sound too derogatory as he is a sweet human being, almost a child in a man’s body, struggling in relating with fellow humans, especially girls. “A bit shy”, his mum would say. “Not normal”, her bitter co-worker would reply. Xiao-hong works with his pesky cousin in a fish and aquarium store; wearing the shop bright orange polo shirt, he looks like a giant goldfish, big eyes wide open and silent mouth.

Lionsgate is set to handle the global sales of “Loveboat, Taipei” a U.S.-Taiwanese YA romance film that started production in Taiwan shortly before Christmas.
The picture is based on a best-selling novel by Abigail Hing Wen in which a young American woman is sent by her parents to a cultural immersion program in Taipei. The trip turns into a summer of romance and she has to choose between the attention of two attractive, but significantly different, young men and her true passion of dancing.
“Lionsgate is handling all global sales on the film though it’s too early to discuss specific territories,” a company spokesman told Variety in an emailed statement.
With its blend of Asian-American characters, romantic decisions and dance moves, the story has been pitched as a mix of “Crazy Rich Asians” and “La La Land.”

“Hot Summer Days” is the first Chinese-language film produced by 20th Century Fox in its then seventy-five-year history. Packed with stars hailing from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan, it’s the kind of ensemble romantic comedy that American audiences have been eating up for decades. Nevertheless, this Chinese take on the genre possesses just enough redeeming qualities to elevate it—albeit only slightly— above the pack of formulaic rom coms churned out by movie studios around the world. Gorgeously shot with several excellent performances, “Hot Summer Days” is a date movie of epic proportions, as we’re treated to a whole stable of good-looking actors— often glistening with sweat—as they try to find love in the sweltering heat of summer.
In Hong Kong, we meet Wai (Nicholas Tse), whose air conditioning repair shop is experiencing a much-needed boom in business during the oppressive heat wave.

If you’re a fan of “Asia-noirs,” you might want to check out the latest entry into the genre, “Fire of Conscience.” Starring Leon Lai, Vivian Hsu, and Michelle Ye and directed by Dante Lam, the film is an intense look at the life of an investigator who has to take on a case involving a car accident and a prostitute’s death: “In the tradition of ‘Hard Boiled,’ ‘Infernal Affairs’ and ‘Reservoir Dogs’ comes this hard-hitting action-thriller from director Dante Lam. Esteemed investigator Captain Manfred (Leon Lai, Bodyguards and Assassins) is at a crossroads in life when he’s assigned to the case of a lethal car accident and the death of...

Detailing the 1930 uprising by the Seediq Indians against the colonial Japanese forces, director Wei Te Sheng's two-part Taiwanese epic Seediq Bale is set to take the world by storm when it opens in September. It stars Masanobu Ando, Landy Wen, Vivian Hsu and Umin Boya in the lead role. The first trailer has just popped up on the film's official YouTube channel and looks to be pretty high-end stuff, giving off something of a Last Of The Mohicans vibe in my opinion, but there's more than a smattering of 300 or Avatar in there too. The film is the follow-up to Wei's box office sensation Cape No.7 and has been a pet project for the director for the past decade. Here's hoping Taiwan can deliver...

(And there are pics to prove it!) Director Tony Ching Siu-Tung is currently finishing the martial arts fantasy "The Sorcerer and the White Snake", an ancient Chinese fairytale in which a young man falls in love with a beautiful woman, not knowing she is in fact a White Demon Snake in disguise. A monk tries to save him by battling the Snake. So far, so "Chinese Ghost Story". But this production has a few aces up its sleeves: Tony Ching Siu-Tung is one of the best choreographer and stunt directors in the business, having worked on productions as diverse as "Hero", "Dororo" and "Shaolin Soccer". And while we're namedropping: the monk will be played by Jet Li and the demon ladies by Vivian Hsu,...

After the success of his much praised “The Beast Stalker”, director Dante Lam continues his quest to prove himself the leading purveyor of hardcore Hong Kong thrills with “Fire of Conscience”. The hard hitting film certainly pulls no punches when it comes to violent action, with choreographer Chin Kar Lok taking the same kind of gritty yet explosive approach he did with Derek Yee’s “One Nite in Mongkok”. The film has an impressive cast, headed up by popular stars Leon Lai and Richie Jen, with support from Michelle Ye (who recently won Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Soi Cheang’s “Accident”), Taiwanese actress Vivian Hsu (“The Knot”, “Hot Summer Days”), Mainland actor Wang Baoqiang (“Equation of Love and Death”), and Liu Kai Chi (also in Lam’s “The Beast Stalker”). Leon Lai takes on the role of rough, tough detective Manfred, known for his...

Maggie Cheung alert!
She walked the Taiwanese red carpet today in this white number to your left. She was presenting Best Picture at the Golden Horse Awards. The Golden Horse is Taiwanese in origin but it's for Chinese language films regardless of country of origin so it's very competitive now. Warlords and Lust, Caution, which both had international releases, were recent winners of Best Picture.
This year, Maggie handed the trophy to No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti which, if we ever see it in the States, might be called I Can't Live Without You or Not Without You. That's Taiwan's submission for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar race. The film is from actor/director Leon Dai and it's about a poor man who loses his daughter once the government learns of their illegal living conditions.
