Adhd is a popular self-diagnosis on TikTok, but mental health patients don’t always prioritize accuracy

If you have trouble sitting still, paying attention, or organizing your executive functions, TikTok may tell you that you have Adhd — but is that diagnosis correct? According to a new study, there are serious doubts about the accuracy of the Adhd information dispensed through social media.

A research team led by Vasileia Karasavva of the University of British Columbia conducted a pair of studies to evaluate the truthfulness of content found through #ADHDTikTok and related hashtags. The first of those inquiries, in which mental health professionals offered their evaluations of Adhd videos, produced damning results. The professionals reported that fewer than 50% of TikToker claims about Adhd symptoms aligned with the criteria found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Dsm).

Growing up, Jessica McCabe knew something about her was different.

“I was the kid staring dreamily out the window and getting lost in books and in my own world, scattered, and came home without my jacket all the time,” she says. “But I wasn’t really a troublemaker.”

That last bit was key: it’s why she didn’t get diagnosed with Adhd, which at the time was stereotyped as something “for boys” that would “only” manifest in bad behavior and bounce-off-the-walls hyperactivity, until she was 12. That year, her mother was in a serious car accident that left her badly injured. Her being in recovery meant McCabe was very suddenly on her own with handling things like homework.

Jay Shetty To Host 2nd Annual ‘Streamys Purpose Awards’, Followed By Creator Summit On Mental Health
For the second year in a row, the Streamy Awards will recognize digital creators, brands, and nonprofits who have used their influence for a greater good during the Streamys Purpose Awards -- an offshoot of the eight-year-old awards show franchise.

This year’s Purpose Awards will be hosted by Jay Shetty -- a monk-turned-inspirational content creator who counts upwards of 10 million followers across all social platforms, as well as 1 billion lifetime video views.

Shetty will hand out a number of honors during the luncheon ceremony on Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles. Those honored by the Streamys Purpose Awards this year include Tyler Oakley for his tireless advocacy work on behalf of the Lgbtq community. And nominees in the 'Creator' category include Mike Rowe (whose Facebook Watch series Returning The Favor chronicles people across America giving back to their communities), as well as anti-bullying activist Molly Burke, and burn survivor-turned-beauty vlogger Shalom Blac.
