‘Hold Your Breath’ Directors Battled ‘Rattlesnakes, Locusts and Lightning’ While Shooting Horror Film: ‘An Actual Dust Storm Shut Our Shoot Down’
Image
While some productions are plagued by Covid-19, union disputes and scheduling conflicts, Karrie Crouse and Will Joines had their hands full with “rattlesnakes, lighting strikes, dust storms and locusts” while shooting their Dust Bowl-era horror, “Hold Your Breath.”

“There was one day where we had to stop shooting because an actual dust storm shut our shoot down,” Joines said. “Once the actual dust storm stopped, we all got back on location, cranked up a huge 20-foot fan and shoveled dust in it to make a fake dust storm.”

Luckily Crouse and Joines were spared from nature’s wrath at “Hold Your Breath’s” Los Angeles premiere Oct. 4 at the Harmony Gold Preview House. Sarah Paulson and the rest of the film’s leading cast joined the directing duo on the red carpet.

“Hold Your Breath” follows Margaret Bellum (Paulson) and her two daughters (Amiah Miller and Alona Jane Robbins) who...

Hold Your Breath: Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller, & more discuss the horror thriller on the red carpet
Sarah Paulson at an event for The Spirit (2008)
Two years ago, we heard that American Horror Story regular Sarah Paulson had signed on to star in a horror thriller called Dust, which would be released as a Hulu Original. That film has since made its way out into the world under the title Hold Your Breath, having been released through the Hulu streaming service on October 3rd – and not only do we have a review of the movie that can be read Here and press day interviews that can be found Here, but we also caught up with the cast and filmmakers when they were on the red carpet at the film’s premiere! JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to speak with the film’s stars Sarah Paulson, Amiah Miller (War for the Planet of the Apes), and Alona Jane Robbins (Law & Order), directors William Joines and Karrie Crouse, plus Natasha Ofili of The Politician...

Sarah Paulson's New Horror Movie Is A Disappointing Return 3 Years After American Horror Story Exit
Image
Warning! This post contains Spoilers for Hold Your Breath.

Sarah Paulson is a brilliant actress, but her most recent movie, Hulu's Hold Your Breath, was a bit of a letdown, particularly following her role in American Horror Story. Hold Your Breath was exclusively released on Hulu on October 3rd, 2024. The horror-thriller is set in 1930s Oklahoma and follows the story of Margaret Bellum (Sarah Paulson) and her two daughters, Rose and Ollie, during a terrible series of deadly dust storms.

The movie also sees the family terrorized by a mysterious being named the Gray Man, although Hold Your Breath's ending intentionally avoids confirming the extent to which the Gray Man was real. It's just as likely that Margaret, who increasingly loses her grip on reality, is hallucinating many of the movie's events. There were many solid performances by Hold Your Breath's cast, Paulson's chief among them. Despite those positives,...

Hold Your Breath Directors Address The Grey Man's Origins In Sarah Paulson Horror Movie
Image
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hold Your Breath.

Hold Your Breath directors Will Joines and Karrie Crouse address the Grey Man's origins in their new thriller movie. Released on Hulu on October 3, Hold Your Breath stars Sarah Paulson as Margaret, a mother in 1930s Oklahoma attempting to protect her children from a sinister force she believes hides within devastating dust storms. This sinister force is, of course, the Grey Man, a mythical being that enters a person's body through the dust and makes them do "terrible things."

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Joines and Crouse reveal more details about the Grey Man in Hold Your Breath and where the idea to incorporate this monster originated. According to Joines, the idea for the Grey Man has its origins in the "Southern folk tales" that he grew up with, with Crouse adding that it was important to them that there be...

Hold Your Breath's Karrie Crouse & Will Joines On Capturing Natural Terror Of Dust Bowl In Sarah Paulson-Led Movie
Image
The Dust Bowl may be home to more than just natural dangers in Hold Your Breath. The movie hails from writer/co-director Karrie Crouse and co-director Will Joines, a frequently collaborative creative duo who have worked together on a number of shorts and music videos over the years. Beyond their direct pairing, Crouse also found success with her work on HBO's Westworld, having been a staff writer for season 3 of the sci-fi thriller and writing its fifth episode, "Genre", and previously made her feature debut in the writer's chair with Pilgrim Song, starring alongside The Dark and the Wicked's Michael Abbott Jr.

With Hold Your Breath, Crouse and Joines not only make their feature directorial debuts, but also take audiences back to Oklahoma in the 1930s, where the state was subject to a series of severe dust storms that would later become known as The Dust Bowl. They narrow the story's focus to Margaret Bellum,...

Hold Your Breath Review: Sarah Paulson Is Great In Psychological Horror That Doesn't Earn Its Genre Place
Image
Hold Your Breath has a lot going for it. There are horror elements that give it an unsettling touch; the dust storms that permeate the film help in that regard. There are hints of the gray man, a figure that comes and goes, slipping through cracks in the door and windows with a threat of possession and fear. And theres a central story of a mothers grief, which pushes her toward an unraveling that puts her daughters in harms way. But all of these elements dont come together cohesively or meaningfully. Worse, parts of the film are confusing and strange.

‘Hold Your Breath’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Is Margaret Dead Or Alive?
Image
In 1933, Oklahoma, a mother was desperate to protect her two daughters from dust, disease, and death. Obsession turns into paranoia, giving birth to a psychological horror that will keep you glued to the screen. Directed by Karrie Crouse and William Joines and starring the brilliant Sarah Paulson, Hold Your Breath is a thrilling, nerve-wracking horror film that you must add to your watchlist if out-of-the-box horror interests you.

Margaret found comfort in dreaming about the chest-high weeds that once surrounded her house. But often the joyful memories were followed by the fear of losing her two daughters a sandstorm. The crops had died, and the land was barren. Her husband, Henry, got a job and traveled to Philadelphia to build a bridge. He had offered for Margaret to travel with him and look after their children, but she had refused. After losing her daughter, Ada, to scarlet fever, Margaret did...

Sarah Paulson Approached ‘Hold Your Breath’ Like a ‘Shakespeare Play’: I Felt ‘Liberated’
Image
For Sarah Paulson, “Hold Your Breath” brought a sigh of relief. Sure, the Emmy- and Tony-winner here plays a woman in the 1930s Dust Bowl who is convinced her children are in danger of an unseen monster dubbed Gray Man. But the experience acting in the horror-thriller made Paulson feel “liberated.”

“American Horror Story” icon Paulson makes her executive producer film debut with the feature, co-directed and co-written by Will Joines and Karrie Crouse (“Westworld”), who previously collaborated on the short film “Propagation.” Crouse’s script was developed in the Sundance Writers’ Lab, with “Hold Your Breath,” originally titled “Dust,” announced in 2022.

“It came to me because I guess Carrie and Will, our directors, thought of me for it,” Paulson told IndieWire, adding that the film was presented as a possible project for her to executive produce. “My agent … read it earlier on and had really liked it. I was very grateful for the opportunity.

‘Hold Your Breath’ Review: Sarah Paulson Acts Up A Dust Storm And Battles Personal Demons In Psychological Horror Story
Image
Debuting feature film directors Karrie Crouse and Will Joines describe their cinematic inspirations for Hold Your Breath as a bit of Kubrick’s The Shining and The Others with the visual panache of Malick’s Days of Heaven. After seeing the Searchlight film, which had its world premiere as one of the Toronto Film Festival’s Special Presentations last month and will begin streaming Friday on Hulu, I thought more of another movie, now 40 years old. Places in the Heart won Sally Field a second Oscar (“You really like me!”) as a widow in Depression-era North Texas trying to survive the elements threatening her farm and her two young children.

I also thought a bit about the great Todd Haynes 1995 drama Safe, with Julianne Moore hiding behind a gas mask to avoid the dangers in our environment. This film falls short of those but is memorable enough to make an impression all its own.

Hold Your Breath Review | Sarah Paulson Ratchets Up the Tension on Hulu
Image
Hold Your Breath is an appropriate title for the new Hulu film with Emmy-winner Sarah Paulson. Not only does it apply to its period setting (Oklahoma during the 1930s Dust Bowl), but you'll find yourself mimicking that title more and more throughout the unsettling psychological horror thriller. Directed by Karrie Crouse and William Joines, Hold Your Breath is not for the faint of heart. The downward spiral that consumes the film's second half will undoubtedly turn off certain viewers. But the cast certainly holds their own in this small-scale production that makes thoughtful statements about climate change, disease isolation, and more.

Sarah Paulson Says Turn as Linda Tripp Is “Greatest Work” Despite Critical Response of “She Sucks”
Image
Sarah Paulson made a cameo on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica on Saturday night to participate in a Q&a following the Beyond Fest premiere of her new Searchlight Pictures thriller Hold Your Breath.

And what a lively session it turned out to be inside the Aero Theatre, as the chat not only covered her work in the Karrie Crouse- and Will Joines-directed film (streaming Oct. 3 on Hulu) but also touched on other high-profile performances and a few notable co-stars.

After receiving wild applause from the enthusiastic crowd when it was mentioned that she’s the (newish) owner of a Tony for Appropriate, the Emmy winner was asked if she navigates spaces differently based on the project. “Sure, I do actually and I have since I played Linda Tripp in [Impeachment: American Crime Story],” said the veteran Ryan Murphy collaborator of the playing the polarizing figure in the...

‘Hold Your Breath’ Review – Sarah Paulson Can’t Save a Predictable Frontier Tale [TIFF]
Image
Hold Your Breath opens with a nightmare. It’s a recurring nightmare of Margaret Bellum’s (Sarah Paulson): every night she goes to sleep and finds herself caught in the middle of cruel Oklahoma dust storm. She’s quickly forced to the ground, choking. Then when she’s about to die, Margaret awakens, gasping for breath.

Written by Karrie Crouse and co-directed by Crouse and frequent collaborator Will Joines, Hold Your Breath is a period drama with hints of the supernatural. The film follows Margaret as a woman forced to hold down the home front during the Depression of the 30s. While her husband is away seeking work to keep their dying farm afloat, Margaret looks after her two daughters: beautiful teenager Rose (Amiah Miller) and pre-teen Ollie (Alona Jane Robbins), who lost her hearing and ability to speak after a bout of scarlet fever.

Margaret isn’t entirely alone.

‘Hold Your Breath’ Review: Sarah Paulson Shines in a Scattered Dust Bowl Horror
Image
The confines of gothic horror meet the sprawling American Dust Bowl in “Hold Your Breath,” the feature debut of directing duo Karrie Crouse and Will Joines. The film often does too much, reaching for too many different sources for its attempted thrills and chills, which results in a mostly scattered experience. However, it has a couple of notable strengths. The first is its handful of tense moments. The second is its sense of paranoia surrounding sickness, in ways that mirror the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Both of these eventually fade, but what remains consistent through its runtime is its committed lead performance from Sarah Paulson, who proves once again that horror would be poorer without her. A mere three-year absence from the genre feels too long, even if she deserves a stronger comeback.

The year is 1933, at a time when the Oklahoma panhandle was subject to severe, debilitating dust storms. With...

Hold Your Breath: Sarah Paulson And Ebon Moss-Bachrach Face A Dust Demon In Jumpy First Trailer

"If you breathe him in, he'll make you do terrible things."

Searchlight Pictures has released the first official trailer for a creepy-looking new horror movie titled Hold Your Breath, which is premiering on September 12 at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival before skipping theaters and going direct to streaming on Hulu just in time for Halloween

Set in 1930s Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, Sarah Paulson stars as a woman attempting to protect her children from the region's intense storms, when a seemingly supernatural threat known as the Grey Man arrives to add to their problems.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach - who will play The Thing in Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps - is also part of the cast, and appears to be playing a pretty sinister character here.

We haven't heard much about this one, but the trailer is certainly very effective.

Sarah Paulson at an event for The Spirit (2008)
Sarah Paulson has been cast in the lead role of an upcoming horror thriller titled “Hold Your Breath.” Set during the 1930s Dust Bowl era in Oklahoma, the film tells the story of a mother named Margaret who must protect her daughters from deadly dust storms as well as haunting spirits from her past. It will premiere exclusively on Hulu on October 3, 2024 just before Halloween.

The movie delves into a local legend from the time period known as the Grey Man. According to the legend, this malevolent spirit would ride the winds of the dust storms, getting into people’s lungs and minds when they breathed in the dust. Once inhaled, the Grey Man could allegedly make people do terrible things. This sets an ominous tone for Paulson’s character as she struggles to shield her family from the external dangers of the Dust Bowl as well as unexplained internal threats.

Sarah Paulson encounters a killer in a deadly fog of dust in the maddening Hold Your Breath trailer
Image
People in the 1930s had it rough. Alongside the Great Depression, one of the most tragic eras in U.S. history, food scarcity was a constant threat while authorities mythologized violent crimes instead of shooting straight with citizens. It’s a good thing there isn’t a deadly dust storm blowing through town while a cold-blooded killer is on the loose. Oh, wait. There is. In Searchlight Pictures’ Hold Your Breath trailer, Sarah Paulson protects her family against the dangers of a relentless storm while a phantom killer runs loose. Grab your masks and hold onto your butts!

Karrie Crouse and William Joines, who regularly collaborates with Crouse, direct Hold Your Breath from Crouse’s script. The duo’s period thriller takes place in 1930s Oklahoma amid the region’s horrific dust storms, where a woman believes a sinister presence is threatening her family from the fog of swirling debris.

‘Hold Your Breath’ Trailer: Sarah Paulson Is Stalked by a Sinister Force in the Dust Bowl
Image
Sarah Paulson is traveling back in time for her latest horror installment.

The “American Horror Story” staple leads thriller “Hold Your Breath,” which is set in Oklahoma in the 1930s amid the region’s horrific dust storms — as if the Depression wasn’t depressing enough. Paulson’s character Margaret is convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family as she grieves a loss and tries to protect her daughter.

Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Annaleigh Ashford, Amiah Miller, and Bill Heck co-star.

The film was announced in 2022 and was originally titled “Dust.”

Will Joines and Karrie Crouse (“Westworld”) co-directed and co-wrote the horror film. Crouse’s script was developed in the Sundance Writers’ Lab. The duo previously collaborated on short film “Propagation.”

Paulson told People that she researched the ’30s to embrace its historical accuracy. Part of her education was watching Ken Burns’ “Dust Bowl” documentary to prepare for the role.

TIFF 2024 adds Saturday Night, Megalopolis, On Swift Horses and more to their screening schedule
Image
Deadline has just unveiled that the Toronto International Film Festival has added twenty more titles to their schedule, which brings their lineup of official selections to a total of 278 films. One of the bigger titles to be added is Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, which depicts the evening of October 11, 1975, when “a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. It is the true story of what happened behind the scenes that night in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live.”

Another big feature that will be screened is the already-divisive but anticipated new film from Hollywood legend Francis Ford Coppola — Megalopolis. This will be the film’s North American premiere after its debut in Cannes already gave the movie the kind of buzz that people had expected to come from a mind as mad as Coppola’s. The film would...

TIFF Adds 20 More Movies To Lineup With ‘Saturday Night’, Jacob Elordi & Daisy Edgar-Jones’ ‘On Swift Horses’, Max Minghella’s ‘Shell’, ‘Megalopolis’ & More
Image
And the films just keeping on coming as the 49th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival has announced 20 movies to its official selection, taking its count to 278 titles.

Chief among them is Jason Reitman’s SNL opening-night pic Saturday Night, from Sony which will get its Canadian premiere in the filmmaker’s homeland. With that deduction, this must mean Saturday Night is going to Telluride.

And you thought Harry Styles was big at TIFF two years ago? Well, here comes Jacob Elordi with Daisy Edgar-Jones in On Swift Horses. The pic also stars Diego Calva. The Daniel Minahan-directed movie follows a woman and her husband who are about to begin a bright new life, which is upended by the arrival of his brother. She embarks on a secret life, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Also, getting their North American premieres are Francis Ford Coppola...

Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis,’ Pedro Almodovar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ Added to Toronto Film Festival Lineup
Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” have been added to the lineup of the Toronto International Film Festival, which made its final programming announcement on Tuesday before posting the 2024 schedule.

The films were part of a group of 19 titles that brought the total number of movies at this year’s festival to 276.

The wildly ambitious and excessive “Megalopolis,” starring Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel, was one of the most talked-about and most divisive titles at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. “The Room Next Door” is Almodovar’s first English-language feature, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore; it will premiere just prior to TIFF at the Venice Film Festival. “Queer” is Guadagnino’s adaptation of a 1985 William S. Burroughs novel, and another Venice premiere.

Other films added to the lineup include the world premieres of Nick Hamm’s “William Tell,...

The source material the new film will draw on is Debbie Nathan’s 2011 book Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case, one of a number of texts that dispute the facts of Schreiber’s account.
