With a new season of television, especially one in the medical or procedural drama, chances are a new character will come in. But would that have been the case if The Resident hadn’t been canceled after six seasons and instead had returned for a seventh? TV Insider asked co-creator Amy Holden Jones and executive producer Andrew Chapman just that when they detailed what would have happened in a Season 7. “No, because we had Yamada [Ian Anthony Dale], and we hadn’t used him enough, so he was like the major new character,” Jones told us. However, she said there was a scenario in which the cast would have expanded. “That thing sort of is dependent on who stays and who goes. And if somebody goes, then you have to fill that hole,” she explained. “But we had a lot of characters already. It was hard scrambling all the ones we had.

Rescue: Hi-Surf is off to a strong start for Fox.

The lifeguard drama debuted to 4.7M viewers on Sunday night, according to live + same-day data from Nielsen.

The premiere episode also managed a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49, which is quite impressive as scripted broadcast series rarely perform that well in same-day ratings anymore.

In fact, it was TV’s highest-rated fall drama debut in six years, since the CBS premiere of God Friended Me in September 2018. It’s also the first time a new fall drama and comedy from the same network have debuted as the week’s No. 1 show, alongside Universal Basic Guys.

The solid performance is thanks in part to a lead-in from an NFL doubleheader. The episode was part one of a special two-night premiere, which continues Monday night.

Fox is looking to make a literal splash next Super Bowl Sunday, by slotting the freshman action drama Rescue: Hi-Surf after the Big Game on Feb. 9, 2025.

As Fox has done with its recent Super Bowl lead-outs (Next Level Chef in 2023, The Masked Singer in 2020), rather than try to launch a brand-new show that night, Rescue: Hi-Surf will have already debuted this fall, airing Mondays at 9/8c after 9-1-1: Lone Star Season 5.

Although the impact of the Super Bowl lead-out has varied over the years, it proved to be a huge boon this year to CBS, which launched “Tracker” after Super Bowl Lviii on Feb. 11 and watched that drama turn into a big hit. The last time Fox aired the Super Bowl, in 2023, it ran an episode of its hit food competition series “Next Level Chef.” And in 2020, Fox aired an episode of another unscripted program, “The Masked Singer.”

Fox last month doubled down on its commitment to Rescue: Hi-Surf, picking up seven additional episodes of the lifeguard drama to bring its first season to 19 episodes. The network now is tripling down on the John Wells Productions series by giving it the biggest platform in television, a berth following the 2025 Super Bowl.

A special episode of Rescue Hi-Surf will air on Feb. 9 after Fox Sports’ presentation of Super Bowl Lix, the network announced Monday morning, ahead of its upfront presentation.

This will be the first time in eight years that Fox will give the post-Super Bowl slot to a scripted series; the last two times the network carried the big game, it went with the unscripted The Masked Singer and Next Level Chef as lead-outs.
