Ben Lear, the son of TV pioneer Norman Lear, initially wanted to make a scripted movie that dealt with prison.

But as part of his research, he got to know some jailed juveniles in the Los Angeles area and found their stories incredibly compelling. The scripted idea was scrapped in favor of a documentary.

“I remember being nervous and not knowing what to expect, and being immediately put at ease when I met all of them,” Lear, 28, says of his first meeting with the minors. “They were so young and ‘teenagery’ in every way, I just felt an immediate affinity.

Famous Monsters. Welcome, welcome, my fiends; please take a load off… mind that throw pillow; it’s genuine werewolf hide. Anyway, let’s get down to brass tacks. Pandemic, how did that come to be?

John Suits. We were reading through a bunch of scripts looking for our next projects and came across Dustin T. Benson’s script, Viral (the name was later changed to Pandemic), which was on the 2012 Bloodlist. We loved the story and the idea of shooting a movie in the style of a First Person Shooter.

Gabe Cowan. At the time we were looking for something fun and different for John to dig his visual mind into. We’ve always been guys who like to try new and different things.

Struggling to understand how people with diverse backgrounds and personalities would cope with, and fight to survive in, a monumentally disastrous situation is a complex and terrifying circumstance. Content Media will commence international sales in Berlin next week on John Suits’ sci-fi action-thriller starring Rachel Nichols, Mekhi Phifer and Missi Pyle.

Pandemic adopts the first-person shooter perspective and takes place in the near future as a doctor travels to Los Angeles in search of a cure to a devastating virus. Dustin T Benson wrote the screenplay.

Content film president Jamie Carmichael will show footage in Berlin and described the project as a potential game changer.

Starz has secured North American rights to Courteney Cox’s feature directorial debut Just Before I Go.

David Flebotte wrote the dark comedy that premiered in Tribeca and stars Seann William Scott, Rob Riggle, Garret Dillahunt, Kate Walsh, David Arquette and Olivia Thirlby.

Just Before I Go follows a suicidal man who encounters a few surprises as he heads back to his home town and prepares to shuffle off his mortal coil.

Cox produced with Thea Mann for Coquette Productions and Gabriel Cowan for New Artists Alliance. David Arquette, Alexandria Jackson, John C Rhee and John Suits are the executive producers.

We’ve learned that production is just now getting underway on 400 Days, a psychological sci-fi thriller that’s being led by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life). Matt Osterman (Ghost From The Machine) penned the script and will also direct. Though 400 Days is a small project, early plot details definitely makes it sound like one worth keeping an eye on.

Adam Rapp is a man of many hats, alternating between novelist, playwright, television, guitarist, actor (Ryan Piers Williams’ X/Y) and the filmmaker of indie comedy (Tiff 2005 preemed) Winter Passing. Rapp shot his third film Why Now?! in upstate New York for peanuts in comparison to several other films mentioned on this list with this talent pool size (Sam Rockwell, Marisa Tomei, Aya Cash, Brian Geraghty) somewhere in late 2012/2013.

EW can exclusively reveal that David Arquette and Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario have joined the cast of the action movie Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins. Arquette will play the role of lead villain “Lordy P” and you can exclusively see a shot of the Scream star in-(gloriously freakish)character above. Other newly-announced Chuck Hank cast members include Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Noah Segan (Looper), Michael Paré (Streets of Fire), and Andrew Bryniarski, who played Leatherface in the 2003 remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Canadian distributor Pacific Northwest Pictures has acquired E L Katz’s SXSW premiere following a deal with Films Distribution.

The film recently won the New Flesh Award for best first feature at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.

Vancouver-based Pnp will release Cheap Thrills theatrically in Canada day-and-date with Drafthouse Films’ Us release, planned for first quarter 2014.

Cheap Thrills tells the story of a new father facing eviction whose life is turned upside-down when he meets a wealthy couple who offer a path to a better life.

David Koechner, Pat Healy, Ethan Embry and Sara Paxton star. Trent Haaga wrote the screenplay and Gabriel Cowan, Travis Stevens and John Suits produced.

Courteney Cox will be go behind the camera and make her feature directorial debut with the independent drama Hello I Must Be Going. Cox currently stars in the TBS television series Cougar Town and of course, is most recognizable as Monica Geller from Friends.

Hello I Must Be Going stars Seann William Scott, Kate Walsh, Rob Riggle and Kyle Galliner. Cox will be working with a script by David Flebotte, an experienced television director whose resume has highlights such as Boardwalk Empire and Desperate Housewives. She will also be producing with John Suits and Gabriel Cowan, as well as her former husband David Arquette.

Scott will play a severely depressed man returning to his old neighborhood to amend a few wrongs before taking his life. Kate Walsh will portray his sister-in-law. With a considerable amount of comedic talent, we might be able to look forward to some touches of humor...

Following a successful crowdfund raise, production will kick off this summer on Chuck Hank And The San Diego Twins, the follow-up from the filmmakers behind Sundance 2011 hit Bellflower.

Los Angeles-based Coatwolf Productions’ early fundraising efforts have attracted Caliber Media and longtime partners New Artists Alliance (Naa).

CAA represents Us rights to the story about a turf war. The film’s director, writer and producer Jonathan Keevil of Coatwolf will star with Tyler Dawson and Coatwolf’s Evan Glodell.

Producing alongside Keevil and Glodell are Coatwolf colleagues Vincent Grashaw and Chelsea St John as well as Gabriel Cowan and John Suits [both pictured] of Naa.

Dallas Sonnier and Jack Heller of Caliber Media will serve as executive producers.

Caliber Media and Naa coproduced Milo and the latter made Cheap Thrills, both of which sold during SXSW. Caliber is in pre-production on horror Western Bone Tomahawk to star Kurt Russell and Timothy Olyphant while Naa is producing Why Now with Parts...

Second Sight Films announced a DVD release date of July 15th for the next 3D horror flick coming at you from music video director Todd Levin, Static 3D. Read on for details, and look for news on a domestic release soon.

Synopsis

As a young novelist and his wife are coping with the loss of their child, their lives are turned upside down when a panicked girl appears at their home in the middle of the night with stories of masked intruders stalking her. That night the stalkers strike, sending the couple on an horrific game of cat and mouse, where they are forced to uncover shocking details from their past that may be the reason for the attack.

Exclusive: ICM Partners has signed Jacob Vaughan, whose directorial debut Milo played at SXSW. The agency repped the flm and brokered a distribution deal with Magnolia genre division Magnet, and now the agency has brought the writer-director into the percentery fold. Vaughan is a longtime collaborator of Mark and Jay Duplass, who are among the producers of the film, along with Adele Romansk, Gabriel Cowan and John Suits. The Duplass duo were exec producers along with John Norris, Kerry Johnson, Dallas Sonnier, Jack Heller and Floren Shieh Productions’ Clay Floren and Aimee Shieh. Vaughan edited the Katie Aselton-helmed horror-thriller Black Rock, as well as Jeff, Who Lives At Home and Cyrus. He produced and edited Dear Pillow and In Search Of A Midnight Kiss.

One film that's been clinging on to the shelf for the past several months is the next 3D horror flick coming at you from music video director Todd Levin, Static 3D. That changes now however as Cinedigm has sucked up the rights for the flick.

As per Deadline the low budget indie was shot in 3D with a custom rig to keep costs down. After an initial 2D VOD release, the plan is to release Static in 3D on DVD. Levin wrote the film with Gabriel Cowan, John Suits, and Andrew Orci.
