New PBS Documentary on Youth Prison Finds Salvation in the Arts: ‘It’s Important to Incentivize Hope’
Los (2015)
Ben Lear, the son of TV pioneer Norman Lear, initially wanted to make a scripted movie that dealt with prison.

But as part of his research, he got to know some jailed juveniles in the Los Angeles area and found their stories incredibly compelling. The scripted idea was scrapped in favor of a documentary.

“I remember being nervous and not knowing what to expect, and being immediately put at ease when I met all of them,” Lear, 28, says of his first meeting with the minors. “They were so young and ‘teenagery’ in every way, I just felt an immediate affinity.

John Suits
The Outre Eye of Daniel Xiii Featuring Pandemic Director John Suits and Producer Gabe Cowan!
John Suits
Hey there, creeps! Pull up a coffin and gather ’round, because die-rector John Suits and Producer Gabe Cowan just stepped across my dismal doorstep to chat up their latest flick Pandemic!

Famous Monsters. Welcome, welcome, my fiends; please take a load off… mind that throw pillow; it’s genuine werewolf hide. Anyway, let’s get down to brass tacks. Pandemic, how did that come to be?

John Suits. We were reading through a bunch of scripts looking for our next projects and came across Dustin T. Benson’s script, Viral (the name was later changed to Pandemic), which was on the 2012 Bloodlist. We loved the story and the idea of shooting a movie in the style of a First Person Shooter.

Gabe Cowan. At the time we were looking for something fun and different for John to dig his visual mind into. We’ve always been guys who like to try new and different things.

Hayden Christensen And Nicolas Cage Soldier ‘Outcast’ To A Limited Weekend Bow: Specialty Preview
Aubrey Dollar and Shane McRae in One Small Hitch (2013)
The weekend is chalk full of new Specialty releases, though most will likely be low performers in terms of dollars at the box office. Entertainment One is opening Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen starrer Outcast with limited runs and will likely find tepid returns at the theatrical box office, though it may shine in the digital/on-demand space where it will also bow this weekend. Documentary Ballet 422 (Magnolia Pictures), meanwhile, has had solid buzz heading into the weekend and should score well in its niche market. Monterey Media is hoping to have traction with stars Wes Bentley, Vincent Piazza and Amber Tamblyn as it opens 3 Nights In The Desert in theaters and on-demand, while Freestyle Releasing is targeting the rom-com crowd for its debut, One Small Hitch. Other Specialty openers this weekend include First Run Features’ doc The Other Man: F.W. de Klerk And The End Of Apartheid In South Africa,...

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Jonathan Keevil’s Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins
Park City might get a blast of 1979′s The Warriors if filmmaker Jonathan Keevil and his clan manage to do what Bellflower (2011′s Next section selected item) did before them. Once again featuring Tyler Dawson and Evan Glodell, Keevil’s Chuck Hank and the San Diego Twins appears to be unapologetically trashy, but kudos are in order for spending a good amount of time finessing the film’s final cut, for adding value supporting players in David Arquette and Paz de la Huerta, and for making a kick ass crowdfunding plea (see below).

Gist: A turf war has been raging in Oldtown for generations. On one side, The Syndicate – an evil gang of crank-head misfits, who has been set on muscling the San Diego family out of the parcel of land they own in the center of town. On the other side, the San Diego family: Tony and Johnny – twin brothers,...

Katie Cassidy in The Scribbler (2014)
The Scribbler

Release Date: Theaters, VOD, and iTunes September 19th Written By: Dan Schaffer Directed By: John Suits Starring: Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Eliza Dushku

Man o’ man, creeps. What we have here is a lil’ independent gem that serves as one of the most original and entertaining superhero origin films I’ve seen in many a day!

But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself… ya see, at first, The Scribbler plays out like a kind of murder mystery (albeit a surreal and ultra-stylized one), as Suki (Katie Cassidy), a young girl with multiple personalities, arrives at Juniper Tower, a boarding home for recently released mental patients—all of whom have their own unique quirks (think Arkham Asylum subdivided into low-rent housing).

After Suki arrives and does a lil’ of the ol’ self-medicating (which in this case involves her eliminating individual personas from her psyche via a machine...

XLrator Media, New Artists Alliance Ink 3-Picture Sci-Fi Pact
Toby Stephens and Caity Lotz in The Machine (2013)
Exclusive: Indie distributor XLrator Media is diving into content creation with John Suits and Gabriel Cowan’s film production shingle New Artists Alliance. The companies have inked a three-picture production and distribution deal to co-produce low-budget science fiction action thrillers, starting with the Brandon Routh-Caity Lotz astronaut pic 400 Days, now in post-production.

After seeing a self-described successful digital and VOD return on the $1.5 million-budgeted April sci-fier The Machine, XLrator’s CEO Barry Gordon was seeking similarly budgeted high-concept acquisition titles but found niche offerings to be sparse. He linked up with Naa, the producers behind recent genre pics Bad Milo and SXSW winner Cheap Thrills. The deal gives XLrator a stake in the pipeline driving content tailored to the kind of multiplatform release that made British android pic The Machine an iTunes high performer.

The two companies initially pacted on graphic novel adaptation The Scribbler, the upcoming Suits-helmed...

Brandon Routh And Dane Cook Topline 400 Days
We’ve learned that production is just now getting underway on 400 Days, a psychological sci-fi thriller that’s being led by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life). Matt Osterman (Ghost From The Machine) penned the script and will also direct. Though 400 Days is a small project, early plot details definitely makes it sound like one worth keeping an eye on.

According to Deadline, 400 Days “centers on four astronauts sent on a simulated mission to a distant planet to test the psychological effects of deep space travel. Locked away for 400 days, the crew’s mental state begins to deteriorate when they lose all communication with the outside world. How ‘Cheap Thrills’ Social Media, Viral Marketing Spawned a Surprise Box-Office Hit
Ethan Embry, Pat Healy, David Koechner, and Sara Paxton in Cheap Thrills (2013)
While “Divergent” stole most of the box office spotlight this past weekend, E.L. Katz's disturbing genre movie “Cheap Thrills” made waves of its own, with a per-screen average that bested Disney's “Muppets Most Wanted” and Lars von Trier's buzzed-about sex drama “Nymphomaniac.” “Cheap Thrills” follows two working-class, down-on-their-luck guys (Pat Healy, Ethan Embry) who are invited by a wealthy couple (David Koechner, Sara Paxton) to participate in a series of progressively bizarre dares that could win them $250,000. After “Cheap Thrills” opened in Los Angeles and Austin and averaged $9,550 per screen, Drafthouse Films CEO Tim League and producer Gabe Cowan (pictured.

2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Adam Rapp’s Why Now?!
Don’t let the lack of theatrical output foul you. Adam Rapp is a man of many hats, alternating between novelist, playwright, television, guitarist, actor (Ryan Piers Williams’ X/Y) and the filmmaker of indie comedy (Tiff 2005 preemed) Winter Passing. Rapp shot his third film Why Now?! in upstate New York for peanuts in comparison to several other films mentioned on this list with this talent pool size (Sam Rockwell, Marisa Tomei, Aya Cash, Brian Geraghty) somewhere in late 2012/2013.

Gist: Written by Ivan Martin and Michael Godere, details on this one are buttoned, zipped, throw away the key mum.

Production Co./Producers: Parts and Labor’s Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen (Narco Cultura) , New Artists Alliance’s Gabriel Cowan and John Suits (Bad Milo), Unified Pictures’s Keith Kjarval (A Single Shot), Ivan Martin, Michael Godere, Tory Lenosky.

Prediction: Premieres category or a return to Tiff in the fall.

2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Intro
Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.
