One of the hippest, most international Scandinavian companies, the Copenhagen-based Snowglobe, is the 5-year-old banner behind “Wildland,” the female-powered crime film set to world premiere at the Berlinale.

Starring Sidse Babett Knudsen (“Borgen”) as a mafia ringleader and introducing Sandra Guldberg Kampp, “Wildland” was written by Ingeborg Topsoe (“The Charmer”) and directed by Jeanette Nordahl. It explores the themes of family, loyalty and the cycle of violence, addiction and corruption. “It’s a female take on a mafia story, a genre that has traditionally been male-driven,” says Katrin Pors, Snowglobe’s co-founder.

The company was founded in 2015 by three plugged-in Scandinavian film executives with complementary backgrounds: Eva Jakobsen, a former producer at Nimbus Film and Zentropa, who produced hit “Antboy”; Mikkel Jersin, a former producer at Nimbus who worked with Joachim Trier, Runar Runarsson and Lisa Langseth; and Pors, who spent years in Latin America, and co-produced films by the...

It has sold Kasper Munk’s Danish family adventure Wildwitch to Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland (Mfa+), Russia/Ukraine/Kazakhstan (Overbrick), Poland (Vivarto), Mexico (Star Castle), China (Hgc), and Italy and Italian-speaking Switzerland (Imago). The Berlin International Film Festival’s annual co-production market has unveiled the 37 feature film projects that will form this year’s selection.

There are 22 projects taking part in the Official Selection, including new films from Boo Junfeng, whose The Apprentice premiered at Cannes in 2016, and Uberto Pasolini, whose credits as a director include Still Life and Machan, and as a producer include The Full Monty.

Lars von Trier has once more broken his “vow of silence” to accept an armful of prizes at Denmark’s Robert awards.

The controversial Danish filmmaker’s Nymphomaniac: Director’s Cut scooped eight trophies including best feature and best director at the Danish Film Academy’s awards last night (Feb 1) – and von Trier was in attendance at the ceremony for the first time.

Accepting the Robert for best feature, von Trier said: “From Peter Aalbæk Jensen (his producing partner at Zentropa Entertainments), I know that some of the Robert awards are won by five votes, so I would like to thank those five persons in the auditorium. Thank you very much.”

Second edition of the Ajyal Youth Film Festival in Doha to include 90 films from 43 countries.

A total of 90 films have been selected for the second edition of the Ajyal Youth Film Festival (Dec 1-6) at the Cultural Village Katara in Doha.

Ten of these features are by first and second-time filmmakers including Macondo by Sudabeh Mortezai, Antboy by Ask Hasselbalch, #chicagoGirl: The Social Network Takes On a Dictator by Joe Piscatella and the opening night world premiere of Speed Sisters by Amber Fares.

Other highlights of this year’s feature film line-up include the Mena premiere of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet, produced by and starring Salma Hayek-Pinault. The animated feature, which is the Festival’s closing night gala presentation, is an adaptation of Gibran’s book directed by Roger Allers (The Lion King), featuring sequences by directors including Gulf animator Mohammed Saeed Harib.

Based on their outstanding careers forged on international co-productions, 24 up-and-coming players in the European film industry have been selected to take part in European Film Promotion's (Efp) networking platform Producers on the Move. Now in its 15th year, Efp spotlights emerging European producers at the Cannes Film Festival from May 17-19 and helps them embark on successful cooperation with their similarly ambitious Producers on the Move colleagues from all over Europe.

The programas been financially supported by the Media Program (2007-2013) of the European Union and the participating Efp member organizations who each made a careful selection of their national participants according to specific criteria.

The schedule of Producers on the Move includes working sessions, one-to-one speed-dating meetings and various opportunities to exchange knowledge and follow up discussions on future projects. In addition, Efp will be teaming up with the European cultural channel Arte and the pan-European co-production fund Eurimages for Producers on the Move. For the first time, Eurimages has prepared a case study exclusively for Efp's program to be discussed under the direction of Eurimages Executive Director Roberto Olla.

He points out the importance of programs such as Producers on the Move:

“This is the 4th consecutive year that Eurimages is involved with this initiative which perfectly marries our objectives of encouraging co-operation between producers so as to stimulate cinematographic co-productions and of promoting their international distribution. Further to the success of the collaboration at the Cannes Festival, the Eurimages Fund has strengthened its partnership with European Film Promotion through other initiatives which also seek to unite professionals from the European film industry in order to participate in its development on an international level.”

Looking back at previous editions, Efp's programme results each year in several new trans-national co-productions and gives the producers a higher profile in Cannes. For 2013, almost all of the participants are still in contact with one another and 17 co-productions are in development.

One recent success story is the coming-of-age feature The Word, directed by Anna Kazejak and co-produced by two Producers on the Move from 2011, Lukasz Dzieciol(Opus Film, Poland) and Jesper Morthorst (Sf Film Production, Denmark). The film was released in Poland in March after its premiere at the Berlinale in the Generation sidebar.

Currently in post is Dirk Ohm - The Illusionist That Disappeared, directed by Bobbie Peers. The producer Maria Ekerhovd (Mer Film As, Norway), joined forces for this film with her Producers on the Move colleague from 2011, Gian-Piero Ringel (Neue Road Movies, Germany) and the 2010 Producers on the Move, Lizette Jonjic (Migma Film, Sweden). Norway has scheduled the release for September 2014. Ekerhovd and Ringel also worked together for two further projects: Every Thing Will Be Fine by Wim Wenders and the six episodes for Cathedrals of Culture which have been presented at this year’s Berlinale.

Plans by the German government to slash the budget for incentive programme Dfff by €10m ($13.8m) has surprised the film community.

In her first public appearance before representatives of the film industry on the eve of this year’s Berlinale, the new State Minister for Culture and Media Monika Grütters had told the audience at the German Producers Guild conference that she intended to continue the good work achieved by her predecessor in the post Bernd Neumann.

At the time, Grütters pointed out that the budget for the Dfff had been increased from €60m to €70m ($83m to $97m) in 2013 “and we would like to leave it at least at this”.

She had also said that the coalition agreement between the Cdu/Csu and Spd had given a “clear signal” for Germany as a production hub by proposing that the Dfff .

Cinedigm just acquired all Us distribution rights to live action Danish family flick "Antboy." The film is based on Kenneth Bogh Andersen's acclaimed comic book series, and Ask Hasselbalch directed and introduced it at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.  "Antboy" starts with a premise not unlike "Spiderman," when 12-year-old Pelle is bitten by a super-ant and develops extraordinary powers. He transforms from the shy and ordinary boy he once was, recuses the girl of his dreams, and ultimately combats super-villain "The Flea."  "We absolutely fell in love with Antboy," said Yolanda Macias, Executive Vice President of Acquisitions for Cinedigm. "The film is filled with heart, humor and charm, and we know family audiences will immensely enjoy this fun superhero movie. We acquired Antboy as the first of a multi-picture, multi-year deal with Viva Pictures Distribution and are excited about our long-term relationship."...

Viva Pictures’ Danish film premiered at Toronto last autumn and is the live-action adaptation of Kenneth Bogh Andersen’s comic book series.

Cinedigm acquired all North American rights and plans a theatrical release on April 16.

Ask Hasselbalch directed the film about a 12-year-old superhero who must save the girl of his dreams from arch enemy The Flea.

The Hunt, which has made the shortlist for the Best Foreign-Language Film at this year’s Oscars, was nominated in 14 categories at the Roberts - the annual awards of the Danish Film Academy.

Last night’s ceremony marked the 30th time the Danish national film prize was awarded at a gala in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Hotel & Congress Centre.

The 57th BFI London Film Festival line-up has officially been revealed, and it is led by a slew of incredibly promising films, many of which have already been buzzing on the festival circuit, and a number of which will be making their debuts here in London.

As previously announced, Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips will open the festival next month, and John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks will close it, book-ending the festival with Tom Hanks leading two highly prominent, Oscar-primed movies.

Stephen Frears’ Philomena was also previously announced as the Lff American Express Gala, with The Epic of Everest announced as the Lff Archive Gala.

I make no secret of the fact that I’m unimpressed by superhero films. They all seem more of the same thing, and the endless sequels do not inspire great hope for the future of filmmaking. But I have to admit that the trailer for Danish superhero film Antboy intrigues me.

First of all, Antboy is not a millionaire by day, masked crusader by night; nor is he a super-soldier, alien, billionaire-playboy-philanthropist, or angsty-teenager. He’s just a little kid, bitten by a very special ant. He’s also Danish, which is a nice change.

Antboy was directed by Ask Hasselbalch from the books by Kenneth Bøgh Andersen. That doesn’t mean much to American audiences, but the trailer provides a charming glimpse into what we can expect from Antboy - and it is not Kick-Ass. Actually, in appearance it’s far more like Wes Anderson directing a superhero film.

"Let's skip school tomorrow to test your powers." Tired of so many cinematic superheroes? Try this on for size. A trailer has debuted for a Danish film titled Antboy, a Spider-Man-like story of a young boy (played by Oscar Dietz) who gets bit by an ant and gains superpowers. Despite the cliche storyline, including an overweight villain named The Flea (played by Nicolas Bro), this actually looks quite charming, almost as if it has the childish wonder and humor of Amblin films. While they show quite a bit in this trailer, including his costume, the villain and love interest, it's not overly revealing. I'm still curious to see this at Tiff. Enjoy! One of Twitch's favorite character actors gets to play super villain in Ask Hasselbalch's upcoming adaptation of popular children's books Antboy. 12-year-old Pelle accidentally gets bitten by an ant and develops unimaginable superpowers. With help from his friend, comic book nerd Wilhelm, Pelle creates a secret identity as the superhero Antboy. Slowly things start to happen in the surburban community, and when a scary and crazy supervillain, Flea, enters the scene, Antboy must step up to the challenge.Young Oscar Dietz plays Pelle / Antboy in the film with Nicolas Bro - a frequent collaborator with Christoffer Boe, amongst others - playing the villainous Flea.
