'Fallout' Star Finds New Animated Role
Image
Walton Goggins has a radioactive new role to look forward to, and it's not Fallout Season 2. According to Deadline, the beloved actor is one of several new additions to the upcoming animated film, Harry and the Mutant Mid-Century Furniture, which is currently in production from director, co-writer, and producer Michael Skolnick. He's joined on the bizarre nuclear sci-fi comedy by fellow newcomers Ron Funches, Chris Parnell, and Shondrella Avery, all of whom will unite with the previously announced star-studded ensemble of Stephanie Beatriz, Tim Meadows, Andy Richter, Matt Walsh, Seth Green, Pamela Adlon, Lou Ferrigno, and Clare Grant.

Set in an alternate history 1962, Harry and the Mutant Mid-Century Furniture takes place in a world where, instead of Radroaches and Deathclaws, atomic weapons testing has led to the accidental creation of living, breathing, mid-century furniture. Caught in the middle of this world is Harry, a grieving 10-year-old boy who believes his...

Image
Exclusive: Walton Goggins (The White Lotus), Ron Funches (Inside Out 2), Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty), and Shondrella Avery (Napoleon Dynamite) have joined Harry and the Mutant Mid-Century Furniture, a new animated feature from director, co-writer and producer Michael Skolnick (The Gilksmans).

Currently in production, the sci-fi comedy takes us back to 1962, in a world where radiation from atomic weapons testing has awakened an unlikely new species: mid-century furniture. Harry, a grieving 10-year-old boy, must join forces with a wise old recliner and a feisty ottoman to save their furniture friends from the destructive plans of a power-hungry Army General Frank Holtzman.

As previously announced, the cast also will include Stephanie Beatriz, Tim Meadows, Andy Richter, Matt Walsh, Seth Green, Pamela Adlon, Lou Ferrigno and Clare Grant. Co-written and produced by Skolnick, Keegan Cotton, Jordan Lewandowski and Seth Morton, the film was cast by Riley Hamilton. Worldwide distribution rights are available.

Coming off of The Righteous Gemstones and a much-discussed turn on The White Lotus — both series for HBO — Goggins stars as Cooper Howard aka The Ghoul in Prime Video’s Fallout and is repped by Darris Hatch Management and CAA.

Peacock Unscripted Slate Includes Nelly and Ashanti Reality Show, ‘House of Villains’ Moving Over From E!
Image
Peacock doesn’t have Olympics this summer, but it will have plenty of programming.

The NBCUniversal streaming service has greenlit five new unscripted series and is bringing another one over from E!. New shows include a pair of true crime docuseries, reality shows featuring Tiffany Haddish and Nelly and Ashanti, and a docuseries about Universal’s theme parks. In addition, Peacock is pulling House of Villains, hosted by Joel McHale, off of E! and onto streaming for an all-new season coming “early 2026.”

The Haddish docuseries, Tiffany Haddish Goes Off, follows the comedian and three of her closest friends as they embark on a four-week girls’ trip across Africa. That one comes out in the fall. Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together, a June release, charts newlywed life for the hip-hop couple.

A three-part investigation into the alleged Gilgo Beach Killer from 50 Cent’s G-Unit Productions premieres in June, and a dive...

Image
Meagan Good, Jabari Banks (“Bel-Air”) and Bailee Madison (“Pretty Little Liars”) will star in “Rocky Top College,” the latest screenplay by former NBA player turned filmmaker Jarnell Stokes.

Directed by Jamal Hill (“Sins of the Father”), “Rocky Top College” follows the harrowing journey of Zion Williams, a young African American basketball prodigy from Memphis. After being suspended during his highly anticipated senior year, the nation’s No. 1 ranked prep phenom shocks the sports world by enrolling in a small-time college to continue his quest for NBA stardom. But once on campus, a series of peculiar and disturbing events has him questioning his decision whilst fighting to hold onto his fleeting sanity.

“This story is deeply personal, inspired by real-life experiences, and I’m grateful to have such a talented team helping bring it to life,” said Stokes. “Like Zion, I once walked this path. Basketball was my anchor in an unforgiving world,...

Jared Hess Is Still a Sundance Guy: Why the Smash Hit ‘Minecraft Movie’ Feels a Little Like an Indie Film
Image
When asked if Hollywood is finally facing its video game renaissance, Jared Hess abruptly switched topics, from “Minecraft” to “Nosferatu.”

“I just loved it,” “A Minecraft Movie” director Hess told IndieWire of the gothic romance from last year. Robert Eggers’ award-winning vampire movie adapts the 1922 German film and Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” by extension. It’s set centuries before video games were invented, but for Hess, Eggers’ exacting and gutsy reconsideration is proof of a key principle behind “A Minecraft Movie.”

“A lot of big movies from the last 20-plus years, so much of the imagery and the experience feels similar,” said Hess. “My favorite [films] are the ones that have personality and characters and interesting things that are unexpected and that surprise you. Those films always inspire me.”

Hess made his feature debut at Sundance in 2004 with an underdog comedy that demonstrated a clarity of vision beyond the twenty-something filmmaker’s years.

What Pop Culture High Schooler Were You?
Oh high school. It was a rough time for a lot of us. Maybe more memorable for some. While we’re passed those adolescent days now, we’re deep in Back to School days and getting more than a little nostalgic. That’s due in part to all the high school teen movies that still rattle around in our pop culture consciousness. Many of the characters in the movies shared the same embarrassments we did, the same first crushes, the same droning teachers, and we all wish we had a friend like Ferris Bueller.

So we asked the PopOptiq staff, which high school character from the movies were you? Share your own pop culture doppelgänger below!

Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) from Scream

Randy Meeks and I have much in common. We are both massive horror movie fans who worked in a video store, studied film and had a hopeless crush on our best friend.

Thinking Outside the Shortlist for Women in Comedy
Margaret here with a guessing game for you: a studio comedy is in production, and the lead is a woman. Who gets cast? If you're a Hollywood executive, the answer is Tina Fey, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig or Jennifer Aniston. Looking at today's top-grossing movies, you'd be forgiven for thinking that there are only four comic leading ladies; the studio focus on bankability keeps them sticking to a pretty rigid shortlist.

Actress Wendi McLendon-Covey, known best for her work in Bridesmaids and Reno 911!, thinks that shortlist should be a little longer. Earlier this week she took to a guest column at Laughspin to stump for her favorite comic actresses, and pitch a host of new projects. I am in no way saying that the women on the funny-lady short lists aren’t funny; they absolutely are! This is just a gentle reminder that there are other bankable comediennes out there,...

Walken, Liu, Rourke game for 'Domino'
Tony Scott's Domino is falling into place with a cast that now includes Christopher Walken, Lucy Liu, Mickey Rourke, Macy Gray, Jacqueline Bisset, Edgar Ramirez, Mo'Nique and Shondrella Avery, sources confirmed. Currently in front of cameras, the project stars Keira Knightley in the real-life story of Domino Harvey, daughter of actor Laurence Harvey, who starred in the original version of The Manchurian Candidate. She ditched a career as a Ford model to become a bounty hunter. Mena Suvari also is on board for a role, and sources say the rest of the cast is expected to be firmed up shortly, with offers out to Dabney Coleman and Delroy Lindo.
