Yellowjackets Almost Killed Off a Fan Favorite Character in Season 1, Creator Reveals
Image
Yellowjackets' present-day timeline confirmed which of the survivors lived long enough to be rescued out of the woods. Series creator Ashley Lyle admitted they almost killed off young Vanessa early in the show.

Yellowjackets showrunner Ashley Lyle said they initially meant to kill off teenage Vanessa Palmer (played by Liv Hewson) after the pilot episode; this erases Vanessa's present-day arc, fleshed out by Lauren Ambrose. "Liv, who plays young Van, was not initially meant to be long for this world," Lyle told Vulture. "Liv is such an incredible actor, and they brought so much to so little in the pilot. We wrote the pilot, we shot the pilot, and then Covid happened, so we had quite a bit of time before we actually had a writers' room and got green-lit. In that interim, we were able to see what Liv could do. We said, 'We can't kill Van! We can't do it!

How the ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Team Pulled Off That Burning House
Image
Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere” adaptation opens with the upper-class Richardsons’ house ablaze. A fire truck pulls up to the curb as matriarch Elena (Reese Witherspoon) watches from the edge of her driveaway. But it is too late to save the stone structure, which is burning from almost every room within. It takes until the finale episode to reveal that unlike in the novel of the same name, Izzy (Megan Stott) runs away before setting the fires, leaving her siblings to finish the job. The production team collaborated closely with the late director Lynn Shelton not only on how to create the look of the exterior flames based on in which room the fire first started, but also on what interior elements to see burning, to represent that Elena’s carefully curated world has been destroyed in an act of defiance against her.

Shelton passed away on May 16. Weeks before her death,...

Jeffrey Waldron was the cinematographer on half of the eight episodes of the Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere,” alongside Trevor Forrest. It was a unique collaboration between the two, as both were brought on from the beginning and worked together to create a seamless look for the show. “We always knew what the next step would be,” Waldron says in an exclusive new interview for Gold Derby. “It wasn’t that we were trying to copy each other’s work from the previous episode because we knew we’d be stepping forward and forward leading up to that explosive finale.” Watch the full video interview above.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Emmy interviews: Showrunner Liz Tigelaar, actress AnnaSophia Robb and more [Watch]
Image
The Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere” is the latest women-centered TV adaptation of an addictive novel, in this case written by Celeste Ng. Kerry Washington stars as Mia Warren, a single mom with a 16-year-old daughter who rents an apartment from Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon), an influential woman in the affluent, seemingly progressive town of Shaker Heights, Ohio. Taking place in the ’90s, the series tackles difficult conversations about race, privilege and motherhood, showing both how far we’ve come but also how little has changed in our societal politics over the years. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with some of the top Emmy contenders from the show.

“Little Fires Everywhere” also gives insight into Mia and Elena’s children and how they handle growing up. Mia’s daughter, Pearl (Lexi Underwood), is fiercely loyal but is also drawn to the comfort and security of the Richardson household.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ cinematographer Trevor Forrest on filming that fiery finale [Exclusive Video Interview]

Trevor Forrest, director of photography on four key episodes of “Little Fires Everywhere,” came upon a few difficult but rewarding tasks to accomplish during his time with the Hulu limited series. One was filming the climactic Richardson house on fire moment seen in the premiere and the finale, while another involved providing a natural difference to how the series was filmed as the relationships between Elena (Reese Witherspoon), Mia (Kerry Washington) and their respective children began to break down. “As the series progressed, we got tighter and tighter and tighter,” Forrest reveals in a new video interview with Gold Derby, “to ratchet up the pressure points, the boiling point of the finale as well.” Watch the exclusive interview with Forrest above.

Underground Season 2 Episode 8 Review: Auld Acquaintance
And you thought your holidays were bad. Christmas was but a backdrop on Underground Season 2 Episode 8, which was directed by none other than Christopher Meloni (August).

What does a Christmas look like on this series, you ask? There were multiple deaths, explosions, extortion, snakes, and boundless badassery.

I love Underground in all shapes and forms, but I get particularly hyped up when there is a lot of action and badass characters doing badass things. So, this installment had me giddy.

It’s difficult to choose who kicked the most ass because everyone was bringing something to the table. I’ll start with Noahlee.

Why the…fudge, would Suzanna force Rosalee to wear a corset? How the heck was she supposed to get it over her enormous belly? I’m relieved that that was the extent of her torture and punishment (in addition to the barely noticeable brand on her face). Rosalee being pregnant,...

Eiff 2012: Grabbers Review
With a mysteriously immobile tanker looming in the bay and a school of bloodied pilot whales banked on the beach, Garda Ciarán O’Shea (Richard Coyle) is naturally more concerned with the arrival of pedantic substitute officer Lisa Nolan (Ruth Bradley). As they navigate their first few days on the job together – quickly reaching loggerheads over O’Shea’s drinking, Nolan’s city sensibilities and the romantic interests of local ecologist Dr. Smith (Russell Tovey) – the island comes under ruthless attack from a tentacled, razor-tongued, alcohol-intolerant menace quickly dubbed “the grabber”.

Of all the genres, subgenres and hybrid combinations to have graced cinemas over the years, the horror-comedy must surely be one of the hardest to successfully pull off. Rely too heavily on sight gags and one liners and audiences might struggle to take your film seriously, whereas if you don’t pay sufficient attention to the comedic aspects of...
