'You're Next' Creators Detail the Sequel They're Glad Never Got Made
Image
Before Adam Wingard joined Legendary's Monsterverse to helm Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he directed what is arguably one of the greatest slasher films of the 2010s: You're Next. Written by Simon Barrett, the film focuses on an estranged family who find themselves under attack by a group of masked assailants during a family reunion. It's a familiar premise, but one Wingard and Barrett handled with a deft hand that's filled with black humor and gory kills. Now, the pair are discussing the sequel they had planned, which they're glad they never made.

The chat between the two comes during a new commentary track on You're Next, which was released yesterday on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited (via Bloody Disgusting). The film saw its killers decked out in a lamb, a fox, and a tiger mask, and while Lamb Mask (L.

You’re Next: Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett tease the sequel they’re glad they never made
Image
You’re Next put a delightfully bloody spin on the home invasion genre, earning the film a passionate cult following that has only grown since its release in 2011. Although the ending of You’re Next did leave the door open for a sequel, a follow-up never materialized. However, that doesn’t mean that director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett didn’t consider it.

In a new commentary track (via Bloody Disgusting) on the film’s new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release, Wingard and Barrett detailed the sequel and explained why they’re glad they never made it.

“Originally, [the Lamb Mask killer] got decapitated in the script with his hand pinned to his head,” Barrett said. “But then we were like, ‘Ah, perfect opportunity, because this film’s gonna be a huge theatrical success, everyone’s telling us, so for You’re Next 2 we’ll just bring [L.C. Holt] back as the Lamb Mask killer.

Adam Wingard & Simon Barrett Detail the ‘You’re Next’ Sequel They’re Glad They Didn’t Make
Image
You’re Next is out today on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited, and director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett discuss the unmade sequel to the 2011 home invasion slasher in a new commentary track.

“Originally, [the Lamb Mask killer] got decapitated in the script with his hand pinned to his head,” Barrett explains. “But then we were like, ‘Ah, perfect opportunity, because this film’s gonna be a huge theatrical success, everyone’s telling us, so for You’re Next 2 we’ll just bring [L.C. Holt] back as the Lamb Mask killer.’

“But because his frontal cortex is damaged by getting stabbed in the forehead, he won’t be able to feel pain anymore. He’ll be kind of crazier now, and he wants revenge for his brother.”

He continues, “Our sequel idea, which I’m glad we didn’t do, was the notion that Erin would be arrested.

Control Freak: "Directed and written by Shal Ngo, known for his work on "The Park," "The Box," and "The Last Fisherman," "Control Freak" introduces a chilling narrative: "A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head." The Real Story Behind The V/H/S Horror Movies
Image
The concept of a haunted or cursed object goes deep into the human race's collective memory. Ever since we were barely bipedal Cro-Magnons, we learned that there were certain things we should not touch or even look at, lest we encounter danger as a result. As our minds and awareness expanded, such deep seated fears extended out toward the supernatural, and we began entertaining the idea that such things as books, paintings, music, and eventually cinema could somehow be cursed. While these fears are still alive and well in the digital space, warning us against clicking on mysterious hyperlinks, there's still a certain je ne sais quoi to allegedly cursed physical media.

When the "V/H/S" franchise began in 2012, the filmmakers behind it capitalized on this latent fear of ours, providing just enough hints and allusions as to why a series of VHS tapes seen in the films might contain eerie,...

‘Terror Trips’ Review
Image
Stars: Hannah Fierman, Damian Maffei, Chaney Morrow, L.C. Holt, Abigail Esmena Froehle | Written and Directed by Jeff Seemann

Six friends start a business providing guided tours to the shooting locations of the world’s most famous horror films, until they discover the one spot where the terror is real.

The saddest thing about Jeff Seemann‘s Terror Trips is that it’s easy to tell it was entirely made from a place of love for the horror genre. There is so much heart, soul, passion, and care injected into the film to the point where it’s legitimately upsetting knowing what unfolds throughout the course of the movie.

Long story short, Terror Trips is one of the most boring and uneventful horror films of the year. It runs at an extremely brisk eighty-seven minutes including credits, and yet so much of the film focuses on this young group of friends...

V/H/S/ 2 Review
Following on from the relative success of found-footage horror flick V/H/S earlier this year, comes the sequel – once more bringing together a collection of filmmakers to each to present their own horror vignette. Following an almost identical formula, V/H/S 2 is harmless, enjoyable fun – yet, much like first, it pushes no boundaries and lacks distinctly in ingenuity and innovation. Oh, and it’s not very scary either.

When private investigators (Laurence Michael Levine, Kelsy Abbott) go on the hunt for a missing student (L.C. Holt), they find themselves at his derelict flat, where a collection of disturbing VHS tapes lie, waiting to be watched. As part of their ongoing investigation, the pair decide to watch the cassettes, much to their evident displeasure. Amongst the harrowing, sinister videos, we have Adam Wingard’s ‘Phase I Clinical Trials’, whereby a man (played by Wingard himself) is given a new...

Jason Eisener at an event for Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Exclusive: Jason Eisener Talks V/H/S/2
Jason Eisener at an event for Hobo with a Shotgun (2011)
Director Jason Eisener talks about his Slumber Party Alien Abduction short in V/H/S/2, currently available on VOD and debuting in theaters July 12

It isn't often that there are two horror anthologies in one year, but 2013 must be an exception with this spring's The ABCs of Death and the terrifying V/H/S/2, currently available on VOD formats and debuting in theaters July 12. Director Jason Eisener, who broke out on the scene in 2011 with the cult classic Hobo with a Shotgun, was actually involved in both those anthologies. His V/H/S/2 short, Slumber Party Alien Abduction, is just as crazy as it sounds, and, like the rest of these segments, have to be seen to be believed. I recently had the chance to speak with Jason Eisener over the phone about his involvement in this project. Here's what he had to say.

I was a huge fan of the first movie.

‘S-vhs’ starring Kelsy Abbott and Adam Wingard – trailer review
S-vhs

Directed by: Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Jason Eisener, Gregg Hale & Eduardo Sánchez, Gareth Evans & Timo Tjahjanto

Starring: Kelsy Abbott, L.C. Holt, Adam Wingard

Rating: Not Yet Rated

Release Date: Tbd

Trailer Score: 5/10

Thoughts by Tsr: I love a good anthology, so it seems like this and its predecessor (last year’s V/H/S) should be right up my alley. For whatever reason, though, I couldn’t muster up enough excitement to actually sit down and watch the previous installment. I was already feeling more inclined to check this one out thanks to contributions from Hobo with a Shotgun‘s Jason Eisener and The Blair Witch Project‘s Eduardo Sánchez. As for the short trailer itself, I appreciate that it doesn’t give away too much (I’ll be less positive about this in a moment). Unless the biggest scare is some creature attacking a bloodied guy’s car,...

Horror Anthology S-vhs Brings Chaos in this First Trailer
S-vhs will continue the fun from the first film, VHS. Premiering at Sundance '13, this sequel again brings several horrifying tales to the big screen. S-vhs will show at Sundance January 19th and the first trailer has been launched for the show. The short teaser mishmashes several short stories together. A child's birthday party is interrupted by some creature, another character drowns, while a man is attacked in his car by a dinosaur-like creature. The clip is short and chaotic. But, horror fans will find something here to entice them to the show, with a wide release for S-vhs sure to be announced soon. Premiere Date: January 19th (Theatrical). Writers: Simon Barrett, John Davies, Jason Eisener, Gareth Evans, Jamie Nash and Timo Tjahjanto. Cast: Adam Wingard, Lawrence Michael Levine, Kelsy Abbott, Hannah Hughes, L.C.
