The story opens with the enigmatic Aayastis—a secretive group bound by a long-standing vendetta and the possession of a powerful, mystical artifact. Their thirst for vengeance unleashes a chain of events that stretches across decades, linking past traumas to present-day horrors.

When Vikram, a resolute police officer, returns to his hometown, he’s drawn into a web of personal grief and an eerie murder investigation. As he searches for answers about his missing mother, he stumbles upon a series of ritualistic killings marked by a strange, recurring symbol—one that defies logic and points toward something far more sinister.

Simultaneously, Rea, a brilliant yet haunted Cbi officer, is assigned to the Charandaspur case. Carrying the weight of her own past, she dives headfirst into a town steeped in secrets and shadowed by powerful forces.

In the last episode, Rea’s connection with the land of Charandaspur and the cult was finally explained. With the reawakening of the cult’s activities, the Aayastis are moving to repeat the revival of Yast through murders that they call sacrifices. The final sacrifice has to be the miracle son’s blood, which would flow in Yast’s vein and bring him to life. Will Rea be able to stop it, or will she have to accept Nandini’s fate? There were a few who pulled the strings and were the masterminds of the entire operation. There were a few who became victims, and then there were some who were adamant about finding out the truth behind the murders. So let’s get to know these characters and find out what happened to them in Season 1.

Rea worked at the Central Bureau of Investigation, and she was the one who was given the responsibility of investigating the murders that had happened in Charandaspur. In its sixth episode, Mandala Murders leads us through a diagram—and the key of the diagram is Jimmy Khan. Jimmy is the grandson of Giyasuddin Khan, who killed the Aaysti Cult members. While he is the one decoding the symbols to locate what element is sought out in the next murder, he cannot escape the fate created for him. We look back on Jimmy’s life and await a loss that may completely change him.

What Happens in This Episode?

In this episode, we flashback to twenty-five years back when Jimmy was in Ladakh. He calls home, and his son receives the call; as he speaks on, his son interrupts to say that his mother had passed away. Jimmy has not been a present father, but years later when Kaivalya turned up with Noor at his door after Zulfi and his wife’s death, he asked him to be a good grandfather.

If we go by the theory that nothing is random in Mandala Murders, then we’ve got to say that Kavita Bharadwaj—Ananya’s sister and Vikram’s fiancée—is an integral part of this tale, despite being in a coma. Episode 4 finally shows us who she was and what really happened to her in detail, and I don’t think the show would have done that had she just been a regular ‘almost dead’ fiancée character. Apart from that, we get to know about the other symbols; the doomed romance between Ananya and Vikram is finally confirmed, and there’s a murder too, a rather visceral one. Let us discuss.

The Mandala Murders are not independent acts of violence but a chain of murders with a cosmic map, related to the cult of Aayastis. In the previous episode, we see Pramod Sahni find out about the pharmacy Monalisa Curio, where the killer skins the face of a princess as per the mandala. First came the voyeur’s body, then came the hands of the Shumbh Nishumbh, the Shaunak’s head, and the princess’ face. Ancient scriptures of astronomy and related texts are found in the curio shop, and Jimmy Khan’s predictions have been able to rightly foretell the two murders. Directed by Gopi Puthran and Manan Rawat, I have to say that Mandala Murders is not a very convincing watch, especially when it comes to the sci-fi aspects of the narrative. With the budget they had, and the kind of prolific star cast they could afford, I believe they could have done a much better job. The problem with Mandala Murders was that, at times, the narrative seemed pretentious, and the impact that it could have had was diluted by certain creative choices the creators made. Yes, the premise had tons of potential, but it was totally wasted because of the lack of authenticity backed by strong writing. Long gone are the days when you could have fooled the audience with cheap gimmicks. I think that they had all the opportunity to create an impactful and entertaining series that was unique in its own way, but certain mediocre creative choices...

The ending of Mandala Murders was all about Rea’s efforts to stop Ananya from bringing Yast into his mortal vessel. Back in the 1950s, Rukmini and the Aayastis began giving shape to Yast’s plan at his chosen place, Aayasthal, which was located deep inside the Varuna Forest in Charandaspur. Anant and his wife, Nandini, arrived there to set up a nuclear plant, and despite several warnings to not defile the sacred grounds, they sanctioned the destruction of the outer walls of Aayasthal. As a result of that, Anant died, and Nandini joined the cult, as Rukmini had shown that she was an integral part of Yast’s design. Science fiction, horror, fantasy, and thriller—all are blended together into one pulpy mash in Netflix’s latest Indian offering, Mandala Murders. The Yrf-produced series has Vaani Kapoor (making her Ott debut) in the lead, along with Vaibhav Raj Gupta (whom you know from Gullak) and Surveen Chawla. Kapoor doesn’t have much screentime in the first episode, where Gupta and Chawla do most of the heavy lifting.
