Machine Gun Kelly Claims He Was “Supposed” To Audition For ‘Sinners’ But Wouldn’t Say N-Word
Image
Although Sinners has landed among the top box office releases of 2025 so far, Machine Gun Kelly had his reasons for passing up a role in the film.

The Grammy nominee recently claimed he was “supposed to” audition to play a vampire in writer/director Ryan Coogler‘s critically-acclaimed supernatural period piece about two brothers taking on blood-sucking neighbors in the South.

“Like Sinners, I was supposed to be in that,” said Kelly on The Pat McAfee Show, according to Billboard. “The vampire, they had me set up to do the audition — it’s the one that’s in the house, so he’s the second vampire, the one that the guy comes and eats the family. In the audition, he has to say the ‘n-word’ and I wouldn’t do it.”

Kelly appeared to be referring to the character of Bert, played by Peter Dreimanis. Married to Lola Kirke‘s Joan,...

Smoke season 1 episode 7 recap: A tale of two Daves
Image
We all have layers. Often, we try to hide pieces of ourselves from the public. But what happens when that comes out? That’s the dilemma facing Dave (Taron Egerton) in this week’s seventh episode of Smoke. Our episode, “Whitewashed Tombs,” gives Dave some hero moments, but also begins revealing his darker side to the world. Let’s dive into this week’s episode.

Trigger warning: This recap references a suicide.

At the end of episode 6, Dave finally caught up with Freddy (Ntare Mwine), the milk jug arsonist. He slapped the cuffs on at the end of the episode, and this week he’s being celebrated. Well, at least celebrated by most of them. Our investigators, meanwhile, are deflated, having failed to find much evidence and seen Dave boost his profile in the meantime.

Dave, meanwhile, is doing morning show interviews and even has some interest in his book again.

‘Smoke’ Episode 7 Recap And Ending Explained: Is Freddy Dead?
Image
You live in this world long enough and see how the loudest majority operates, you’re bound to grow a little cynical. It’s not that you don’t want to believe that people and their creations can be sensible and wise. It’s quite the opposite, actually. From the first episode itself, Smoke has been rather clear about what it thinks of Dave. Anything that’s looked or felt “cool” about him is meant to parody the kind of qualities that people have admired in their favorite morally questionable, self-destructive antiheroes. But even then, I wondered, or more accurately, dreaded the possibility that Smoke would go too soft on their psycho arsonist murderer just to appease the crowd that tend to have soft spots for self-proclaimed “heroes” like Dave. That’s why the 7th episode acts as the final reassurance that they absolutely know what they’re doing. It...

Anna Chlumsky Shares How 'Veep' Changed Her Political Perspective
Image
Veep ended its run on HBO more than five years ago, but its satirical take on modern American politics feels as timely as ever. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who earned multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for her showstopping performance as the show's title character, has even said that her deliciously controversial character shares traits with Donald Trump. Alongside the infamous Selina Meyer for virtually all seven seasons was her anxiety-stricken Chief of Staff Amy Brookheimer, played to perfection by Anna Chlumsky. Years after earning child-star status for her acclaimed turn in My Girl (1991), Chlumsky proved she's still a talent to watch with her Emmy-nominated performance on Veep — and it hasn't stopped there.

In addition to leading the hit Netflix series Inventing Anna (2022), Chlumsky can now be spotted in multiple standout episodes of the gritty new series Smoke on Apple TV+. MovieWeb recently caught up with Chlumsky while she was promoting Smoke, and she...

Why 'Sinners' was the best thing I streamed this week
Image
The Ryan Coogler film debuted on HBO Max at the beginning of July.

The weekend has arrived once again, and with it comes some downtime — at least I hope so for all you readers out there. With that downtime comes the opportunity to watch something new, and if you’re looking for a recommendation, I have a sizzling suggestion for you this weekend.

The best thing I streamed this week by far was “Sinners,” which was first released in theaters on April 18 before making its way to HBO Max on July 4. Keep reading to find out why it was my favorite new title of the week, and why I think you should rush to HBO Max to watch it if you haven’t already.

Smoke Season 1 Episode 5 Gives Us Nothing New — Review
Image
Smoke Season 1 Episode 5 marks a turning point in the narrative. Dave is out in the open, and Michelle has him figured out.

He’s an incredibly messed-up man who tries to make up for his complexes by inflating his qualities, sometimes inventing some. While that’s not inherently bad, people suffer when Dave is not indulged.

The episode offers another in-depth look at the characters, but it doesn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know or suspect.

(Robert Falconer/Apple TV+)

We follow Dave at a fire convention, where he’s forced to confront himself away from the comfort of his office, where he does nothing.

Elsewhere, Calderon focuses on filling in some gaps about Dave.

Her instincts have been screaming at her that he’s an arsonist, but instincts don’t stand up in court. She needs unimpeachable evidence that Dave has been terrorizing the people of Umberland...

‘Smoke’ Episode 5 Recap & Ending Explained: Is Dave Dead Or Alive?
Image
You’ve seen punchable man-children like Dave all around you. Sometimes, and more often than you think, the qualities that make Smoke’s primary antagonist “likeable” have even worked on us in real life scenarios. For such a dopamine and charm-deprived species, even being a notch above the mundane gets mistaken for actual depth of character. If I had to find an analogy for how men like Dave even have anyone around them, I’d compare him to the countless reels on your screen that keep you hooked for a flicker. You know there’s nothing substantial in there, but they’re a momentary escape from the deafening silence–or worse yet, the noise in your head that you’re trying to drown. That’s how vapid, cringeworthy dirtbags like Dave keep the business running. But the biggest mistake you could make while reading a narcissistic loser like Dave is...

Taron Egerton’s New ’True Detective’ Replacement Becomes a Global Streaming Hit
Image
Taron Egerton recently lit the world on fire with his performance in Carry-On, the Netflix original holiday thriller that rose the ranks to become one of the streamer’s most popular movies. However, his latest role comes in the form of a gritty detective series that’s been dominating streaming charts. Egerton stars alongside Jurnee Smollett and Rafe Spall in Smoke, the true-crime series following a troubled detective and an arson investigator who chase down two serial arsonists. The first four episodes of Smoke are currently streaming on Apple TV+, and the show is charting for Apple in more than 40 countries. It received mild reviews out of the gate thus far, earning a 70% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Smoke is the perfect show to watch for fans who are missing True Detective, particularly the first season of the hit HBO series starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

‘Friday Night Lights’ Star Addresses Reboot Return Rumors [Exclusive]
Image
Apple TV+’s upcoming crime drama Smoke might be Jurnee Smollett’s latest chapter, but for longtime fans of quality TV, it’s hard to forget where she proved she was something special: Dillon, Texas. Before Lovecraft Country, Birds of Prey, and Underground, Smollett joined Friday Night Lights in Season 4 as Jess Merriweather, a fiercely determined teen with a mind for football and dreams of coaching. She quickly became one of the show’s most compelling late-game additions—and now, 13 years later, fans are wondering if she’d return for the reboot reportedly in the works.

In a recent interview with Collider’s Taylor Gates, Smollett addressed the speculation directly and didn’t hesitate to show love for her old Dillon family—especially showrunner, Jason Katims.

“I love Jason Katims, so if I was invited to, it would be an honor. In a heartbeat. I’d do anything with Jason Katims.

‘Smoke’ Episode 4 Review and Ending Explained: Sparks Fly as Michelle Closes In and Dave’s About to Explode
Image
There’s always this slow-burn tension in Smoke, the kind that crawls up your neck and won’t let go. Episode 4, titled “Strawberry,” is anything but sweet. If anything, it’s the sourest bite yet. Dave Gudsen’s behavior is no longer just unstable; it’s explosive. Every time something doesn’t go his way, he spirals harder, and this episode pushes him even further off the edge.

Then there’s Michelle, who’s been side-eyeing Dave from the start. Michelle’s not just running on gut feelings anymore, something’s seriously off, and she knows it. The clues are still all over the place, but she’s putting things together, bit by bit. You can feel her closing in.

Smoke Episode 4 is wild, unhinged, and deeply uncomfortable but that’s what makes it work. It’s messy, a little disturbing, and kind of genius. You’ll squirm, you’ll hold your breath and somehow,...

This Brutal Box Office Smash Is the #1 Movie on HBO Max: “The best film of the year”
Ryan Coogler
The horror genre has infinite potential for creativity, allowing filmmakers the chance to mix and match horror with almost any other genre. That distinction often leads to unexpected and impressive results. Horror musical? Ok. Action horror? Sure thing. Slapstick horror comedy? You betcha.

It’s great fun to see filmmakers meld horror with seemingly opposing genres and make magic in the process. Seeing as the horror space is so deeply connected to a wide range of human emotions, it makes a certain amount of sense that it’s so infinitely adaptable and often lends itself to unexpected pairings.

Ryan Coogler recently proved just how adaptable the horror genre really is with his celebrated genre mashup, Sinners. The flick amalgamates elements of several genres. In addition to horror, the list includes musical, Southern Gothic, action, and period drama. While one may not expect those seemingly opposed categories to mesh well, fans...

Dennis Lehane on Fire, Fragility, and Fictional Knights in Smoke
Image
By now, fans of Apple TV+’s Smoke know the truth about the show’s arsonists and understand just how twisted, layered, and painfully human the storytelling is.

That’s all thanks to creator Denis Lehane, who drew inspiration from the Firebug podcast and then ran in the opposite direction.

“I want to be really clear. I did not adapt Firebug. I was inspired by it,” Lehane said with a laugh. “I went so far afield. I would hate anybody to like listen to Firebug and go, wait a minute, where’s Michelle?”

(Courtesy of Apple TV+)

While the true-crime podcast served as a launching point, Lehane wasn’t interested in retelling a real-life case.

Instead, he locked onto something more conceptual: the warped masculinity and performative heroism of an arson investigator who’s also setting fires. That duality became the show’s beating heart — and Taron Egerton‘s most complex role to date.

Review: Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ on Warner Bros. Home Entertainment 4K Uhd
Image
Set in 1930s Mississippi, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners pulls liberally from the folklore surrounding that period’s explosion of blues talent in the Delta area. Musicians of the time, crushed by the weight of Jim Crow and the Great Depression, generally plied their wares in juke joints, and the film centers on one such establishment newly acquired by identical twins Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan), dubbed the Smokestack Twins.

The brothers fled the South as soon as they could, making their way as soldiers in the European trenches and enforcers for the Chicago mob. Now they’ve returned to Clarksdale with a lot of ill-gotten gain and even more cynicism about their travels, having found only more discrimination in ostensibly more progressive places. In coming home, they’ve chosen the devil they know.

Gathering supplies for their opening night, Smoke and Stack also source talent for their establishment from those living in the area.

Michael B. Jordan's $364 Million Supernatural Horror Is Already an American Streaming Hit
Image
After lighting up the box office with an original horror tale no one saw coming, Sinners is now claiming its throne on streaming—and it’s doing so with bite. Ryan Coogler’s blood-soaked Southern horror epic, Sinners, dropped on Max this July 4, and it’s already dominating the charts. Just days after landing on the platform, the film shot to #1 in the U.S., giving subscribers a chance to catch what’s become the surprise juggernaut of 2025. With a Certified Fresh 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and a sky-high 96% audience score, the dual Michael B. Jordan-starrer is now officially a box office and streaming sensation.

It’s rare these days to see a film not tethered to an existing franchise break through, but Sinners proved there’s still a hunger for something original—especially when it’s this good. After grossing $362 million worldwide, the film now holds the crown as...

Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku and the Women of ‘Sinners’ on the Film’s Diverse, Empowered Female Characters
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains plot details of Ryan Coogler‘s “Sinners,” now streaming on Max.

For the first half of 2025, there’s been much ado about “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s Southern vampire thriller, which raked in $365 million at the worldwide box office.

Every element of the film has been dissected — from Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance as the Smokestack twins to the discovery of newcomer Miles Caton, as well as the project as an homage to the blues (with a cameo by legendary musician Buddy Guy) and the adept use of Imax film cameras to capture it all.

But moviegoers have been singing another refrain, too: “The women of ‘Sinners’ devoured.” Indeed, the story doesn’t sizzle without fiery performances from Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Li Jun Li and Jayme Lawson.

“It’s a movie with vampires and a whole lot of other stuff. [Ryan is] saying a lot, and...

Michael B. Jordan Movie With 97% Rt Score Becomes Instant Streaming Hit
Image
Michael B. Jordan may only be 38 years old, but he has been acting for over two decades already. He got his start as a child actor playing one-off roles in TV shows like The Sopranos. His teenage and young adult years then included parts in shows like The Wire, Friday Night Lights, and Parenthood.

In the 2010s, Jordan made a pivot into more film acting. One huge driver of this change was a 2013 independent film called Fruitvale Station. This movie got rave reviews and helped put Jordan on the map as a more serious actor.

It also kick-started his working relationship with director Ryan Coogler. Coogler would go on to direct Jordan in Creed, a Rocky reboot film led by the actor, and the McU's Black Panther.

In this regard, Jordan has become Coogler's muse. This year, the pair made another film together, which is now becoming a huge hit on streaming.

Sinners Makes History With New Viewing Option for Streaming Debut on Max
Image
After its theatrical success, Ryan Coogler's hit film Sinners is now streaming on Max. This also makes history by offering a new viewing option that's never been done for a streaming release.

Per Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinners has two viewing options available on Max: the theatrical cut and the Black American Sign Language (Basl) version. It's the first time that a streaming service has exclusively debuted a film interpreted in Basl. Wbd has described Basl as a "distinct dialect of American Sign Language (Asl) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances."

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach," Wbd's SVP of Global Product Management, Naomi Waibel, said in a statement. "Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve. Sinners...

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' and McU's 'Blade' Reboot Share a Surprising Connection
Image
Sinners was Ryan Coogler's take on a vampire film and the 1930s setting gave the feelings a unique feel to it while also putting its characters in a historical setting that allowed the audience to know what dangers lurked for Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan). And they weren't just in danger from vampires. But apparently there was a connection to another famous vampire. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade starring Mahershala Ali has been delayed and taken off the release calendar, but according to Ironheart executive producer, Sev Ohanian, the original idea for the McU's Blade was similar to Coogler's vampire flick.

Speaking with ScreenCrush for the release of the Disney+ series Ironheart, Ohanian, who also produced Sinners, spoke about Marvel graciously allowing the Coogler film to buy some costumes that were not being used from the delayed Blade film at price. Ruth E. Carter, an Academy Award winning...

Sinners Producer Shares Hit Vampire Film's Hidden Connection to Canceled MCU Movie

Sinnersand Ironheart producer Sev Ohanian explains the hidden connection between Ryan Coogler's vampire period hit and an unproduced Marvel movie.

During a recent appearance on ScreenCrush: The Podcast!, Ohanian gave a shout-out to both Marvel Studios and acclaimed costume designer Ruth Carter, who came together to provide Sinners with its signature 1920s-style apparel. "Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting," Ohanian recalled. "At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she's talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era."

"She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes," Ohanian continued, "and it was like, 'Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow.' And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price." Ohanian went on to note that...

Taron Egerton and Denis Lehane Re-Team for Another Satisfying True Crime Series With Arson Thriller ‘Smoke’: TV Review
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following piece contains plot details from the first two episodes of “Smoke,” now streaming on Apple TV+.

Three years ago, crime writer Dennis Lehane and actor Taron Egerton teamed up for “Black Bird,” an Apple TV+ series that adapted the true story of FBI operative James Keene into a disturbing-yet-tender take on masculinity. “Black Bird” was well-received, earning critical praise and a trio of Emmy acting nominations, including a posthumous nod for Ray Liotta as Keene’s father. But while Egerton was excellent in the role of a man brought face-to-face with the ugly extreme of his own unquestioned machismo, the showier role went to Paul Walter Hauser, who played a serial killer slowly goaded into a confession and ultimately took home the trophy for outstanding supporting actor.

Egerton and Lehane have now reunited for “Smoke,” another true crime show that explores criminal psychology with an eerie atmosphere and a star-studded cast.

Sinners' Domestic Box Office Hits Incredible Milestone That Basically Proves It's A Hit
Image
Sinners has hit an outstanding milestone at the domestic box office. The new horror movie, which was directed by Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan as identical twins Smoke and Stack, who must battle a terrifying evil when they return to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1932. The Sinners release kicked off with a bang, earning a $48 million debut that marked the best Easter opening weekend for an R-rated movie in history. Since then, it has climbed past the $250 million milestone worldwide by the end of just three weeks in theaters.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Sinners is projected to earn a 3-day total of $22 million at the domestic box office by the end of its fourth weekend in theaters. This will see it landing at No. 2 on the domestic chart for the second weekend in a row after holding the No. 1 spot for two consecutive weekends prior to...

‘Sinners’ Takes a Bite out of ‘Top Gun’ at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Sinners is set to enter its fourth full weekend in theaters soon, but the vampire horror film from director Ryan Coogler is showing no signs of slowing down at the box office. Sinners has started the week strong by adding another $7 million to its domestic total in the first two days, which has helped it reach a global haul of $187 million. This is enough to push it past the original Top Gun, which grossed $180 million at the domestic box office back in 1986. When adjusted for inflation, Top Gun’s domestic total is around $525 million. Sinners has also added $57 million from international markets to help its global total reach $244 million, and it will certainly push beyond the $250 million mark this weekend and towards $300 million.

Starring in dual leading roles of Smoke and Stack in Sinners is Michael B. Jordan, who has worked with Ryan Coogler on every film of the director’s career so far.

Sinners Box Office Crosses Major Global Milestone That Justifies The Ryan Coogler Horror Movie's Huge Budget
Image
Sinners has passed a crucial milestone at the worldwide box office. The new horror movie, which follows twins Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) facing a sinister evil after returning to their Mississippi hometown in the 1930s, was directed by Black Panther and Creed's Ryan Coogler. The Sinners box office has set multiple records, including earning the best Easter opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie and having the second-best week 2 drop ever for an R-rated horror movie.

Per Variety, as of Sunday morning, Sinners is projected to close its third weekend in theaters by hitting a cumulative domestic total of $181 million. When combined with the $57 million that it is projected to have earned overseas by the end of Sunday, this brings its cumulative global box office total to $236 million. Can’t get enough of Ryan Coolger’s “Sinners?”

You aren’t alone. The visionary vampire movie, which made over $180 million at the box office, is a genuine cultural phenomenon. Quite frankly, it’s enough to make you want to repeat the experience of watching “Sinners” at home, without, you know, the 70mm print and IMAX-certified screen.

But fear not, there are plenty of “Sinners”-adjacent material to watch at home, along with some of the other movies that Coogler has cited in the run-up to the movie’s release.

“Sinners” is a singular work of staggering genius, but here are a bunch of movies that will at least partially scratch that itch – at least until you can get back to the theater to watch Michael B. Jordan raise some more hell.

Sinners Star Reflects on Michael B. Jordan Chemistry and Sequel Possibilities
Image
The following contains major spoilers for Sinners.

Although Sinners is a vampire horror film, the acclaimed Warner Bros. blockbuster contains a mix of several genres and nuances that critics and fans can't get enough of. Among them is the romantic bond between one of Michael B. Jordan's characters and Annie, played by Wunmi Mosaku.

Speaking with W Magazine, Mosaku detailed her on-screen dynamic with Jordan as they brought the romance between Annie and Elijah "Smoke" Moore to life. According to the actor, it was director Ryan Coogler that helped the pair tap into their characters' bond. "Ryan said to call Smoke by his given name, to call him Elijah. That opened up the whole scene for us," she explained. "It was tingly. She calls him Elijah three times in the movie. [During] that scene, in the death scene, and when they’re reunited."

"That’s who she loves, that's why she can forgive and understand,...

Hailee Steinfeld Spitting Into Michael B. Jordan’s Mouth Wasn’t CGI: Sinners Backstage Rumor Will Make You Uncomfortable
Image
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners beats all odds to become a huge success in theaters, earning great reviews from critics. This blood-sucking vampire drama was different from the conventional storytelling in the genre. Out of all things that worked for the film, the chemistry between Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld was a crucial element.

However, you wouldn’t view the romance the same after some disturbing stories from the film set. According to a TikToker who worked on the film, the scene where Steinfeld’s character spits into Jordan’s character’s mouth was shot without any CGI. Even worse, the TikToker revealed that there were multiple takes for the scene.

Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ Is the First Oscar Movie of 2025
Image
This year, the Oscar season prayer has a name, and it is “Sinners.”

With “Sinners,” writer-director Ryan Coogler, one of Hollywood’s most quietly seismic forces, steps into a genre long neglected by the Academy, and once again, reshapes the game. A slow-burn psychological horror film, “Sinners” is not just a pivot for Coogler — rather, it’s a proclamation.

For more than a decade, Coogler has been Hollywood’s quiet revolutionary — symbolizing, for the Black community, a figure akin to our very own Christopher Nolan. From chronicling the final hours of Oscar Grant’s life in “Fruitvale Station,” to reviving the “Rocky” franchise with “Creed,” to breaking barriers with the cultural juggernaut “Black Panther,” Coogler fuses personal and political storytelling with mass appeal like few others.

Now comes “Sinners,” a certified box-office hit and critical darling that stands to redefine both Coogler’s career and the Academy’s stale boundaries around horror.

Sinners just matched a box office record set by James Cameron's Avatar in 2009
Image
This past weekend was another strong one for Sinners, the vampire movie written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther). After racking up a solid $48 million at the domestic box office for its Easter opening weekend, Sinners pulled in another $45 million in its second weekend in theaters. That's only a 6% drop off in ticket sales — something which is all but unheard of at the movies, especially in the horror genre. The last movie which opened above $40 million to have that small of a drop off in its second week was James Cameron's Avatar back in 2009. Sinners has not only matched that record set by Avatar, it's also the first R-rated film to ever see such a low second week drop at the box office.

As Entertainment Weekly explains, Hollywood usually plans on large second week drop-off for movies; even a 50% drop is considered a win. For example, A Minecraft...

The Dumbest Vampire Myths Are Finally Dead, ‘Sinners’ Stakes the Heart of Outdated Folklore Without Blinking
Image
Sinners drove a stake through Hollywood’s love affair with mediocrity. Ryan Coogler’s bold new flick is like nothing you’ve seen before—a killer mix of gripping 1930s Southern noir and raw vampire horror. The film sticks to the classic lore of blood-suckers we’ve all grown up with, but turns it up to full throttle. And from the early buzz, it’s clear: this movie is about to get Everyone talking.

Starring Michael B. Jordan as a pair of bootlegger twins fresh outta Al Capone’s Chicago and looking to set up a juke joint in their small Mississippi hometown, Sinners isn’t just another vampire movie—it’s a journey into the heart of a haunted era, where every shadow hides something worse than just your average monster.

The film’s not afraid to dig deep, hitting all the right notes of classic horror while also packing a modern punch.

Michael B. Jordan Reacts to Tom Cruise Going to See ‘Sinners’
Image
Tom Cruise is encouraging his fans to go see Sinners, and star Michael B. Jordan has thoughts.

On Sunday, Cruise took a break from promoting his upcoming sequel Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning to post on Instagram a photo of himself at a theater holding two tickets for Ryan Coogler’s genre-defying hit.

“Congratulations Ryan, Michael, and to the entire cast and crew,” Cruise wrote. “Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits.”

Jordan reacted by sharing the post in his Instagram stories with a mind-blown emoji and a “nah this crazy …”

Sinners is coming off a truly impressive second weekend, defying the odds and remaining No. 1 domestically with $45.7 million — marking one of the smallest week-two drops in history for a movie playing outside of the year-end holidays and erasing early debate over its $90 million budget. The R-rated supernatural thriller has also managed to earn a perfect audience score.

The Kinkiest ‘Sinners’ Scene Between Hailee Steinfeld and Michael B. Jordan Wasn’t CGI (Report)

How do you perceive intimate moments in horror movies? Do you consider them ‘unnecessary,’ maybe even ‘distracting’? Or is it just another emotional set piece for you that doesn’t deserve mindless taboo-fication in 2025? Here we have one of cinema’s toughest dilemmas in the 21st century.

Well, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan have stoked the flames of these discussions with their 2025 supernatural-western epic Sinners. At its heart, we have that intense scene where Hailee Steinfeld’s Mary establishes dominance over Stack in a moment of steamy R-rated madness.

But believe this: none of what you saw was merely just another computer-rendered sequence. Everything was unfiltered, raw, and absolutely real, courtesy of Steinfeld and Jordan.

Why Ryan Coogler Deserved That Rich ‘Sinners’ Deal
Image
On this week’s Screen Talk, co-hosts Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio dig into Ryan Coogler’s $90-million period vampire musical “Sinners,” starring Michael B. Jordan as twins Smoke and Stack, as well as the boffo box office and the controversial deal.

Warners opened the movie to a bigger-than-expected $48 million Easter weekend, and a weak $15 million overseas. The only other horror film to ever earn an A CinemaScore was James Cameron’s sequel “Aliens” in 1986. It’s rare and bodes well for a broader audience. Nearly half of the opening-day audience was Black, which increased to 38 percent by the weekend’s end.

Warners has bragging rights over this one and, with “A Minecraft Movie,” enjoyed two movies grossing over $40 million. It spells some relief for embattled studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. The movie is original and unusual, and thoughtful and entertaining enough to warrant success. It’s...

The 5 Best Michael B. Jordan Movies, Ranked
Image
Michael B. Jordan has returned to movie theater screens this week with “Sinners,” the new movie from “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler. Jordan stars in the film as Smoke and Stack, a pair of twin brothers who find themselves fending off a vampire attack one unlucky night. His dual roles in “Sinners” represent yet another instance of Jordan testing his limits onscreen. That’s not surprising to see from an actor who has already pushed himself to try on the roles of action hero, inspirational real-life figure and even director in recent years.

Jordan has, in other words, accomplished a lot over the course of his 20+ year career. Here are the five best films he has starred in, ranked.
