There’s nothing revelatory or new about adding a dose of the comedic to a crime picture, but the heist comedy is just a small corner of a vast and beloved cinematic landscape, as of recently, dominated by one filmmaker: Steven Soderbergh.

Responsible for four acclaimed entries in the genre, including Out of Sight and the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, Soderbergh has thankfully ended his so-called retirement and returned to film and the world of heist comedies with his newest, Logan Lucky, now playing in theaters. The film’s plot follows Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) a family man who plans to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, only to find he and his crew (Adam Driver, Daniel Craig and Riley Keough) must do the job while a Nascar race is underway.

To celebrate Soderbergh’s return with Logan Lucky, we’ve decided to look back at the greatest heist comedies of all-time.

Following in the footsteps of alums like Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson and Ryan Coogler, eight up-and-coming directors just completed the Sundance Directors Lab. For four weeks these directing fellows worked with actors and production crews to shoot and edit key scenes from their screenplays. Throughout the process they were mentored, working one-on-one with creatives advisors as they made key discoveries about their scripts, collaborated with actors and found a visual storytelling language for their films.

Be prepared. Write, then rewrite your script until it’s perfect. Shot list, storyboard, create a visual plan for your cinematic universe.

There’s a myth, which often starts in film school and is perpetuated by dissecting the work of great directors, that up-and-coming directors can plan their entire movies in their head. Yet what so often happens when first-time feature directors get to set — and their movie exits their head and becomes reality — is things are totally different than what they imagined. Previous concerns instantly become irrelevant, while problems never imagined become stark realities. Collaborations alter plans and bring new possibilities to the table, but it often becomes impossible to harness and adjust when low budget filmmaking, with its impossibly tight shooting schedule, is a race against the clock.

After last week’s news about Netflix securing The Blacklist for a record fee, a similar story came to light this week concerning the pre Batman prequel series Gotham. Now rather than getting it day and date after Us broadcast as per Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn, Gotham’s entire run will just arrive on Netflix after it’s finished its TV broadcast. Worse news is that this means you have to wait for Channel 5 to get their finger out and schedule it on one of their three channels and then muck it around the schedule just to confuse you further and for it to finish its run there. Kind of takes the wind out the sails doesn’t it? I wouldn’t expect to see Gotham on Netflix until this time next year at best but we will see.

Confession: I think Nicolas Cage is a great actor. And not just because of Oscar-quality performances like those in Adaptation and Leaving Las Vegas. It's a good weekend for catching up on Sundance highlights, big and small. Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" is, of course, the film on everybody's lips at the moment — and deservedly so — but that's no reason to ignore a more modest independent tale of growing up and growing out, albeit at a slightly different age. Aaron Katz and Martha Stephens' droll, laid-back comedy "Land Ho!" is the first collaboration between the two writer-directors, each one with a handful of delicately formed micro-indies behind them, and it is itself a story of an unexpected partnership: the plot centers on two drifting retirees, formerly in-laws, whose friendship is tested and deepened over the course of a spontaneous road trip through Iceland. UK independent cinema group Curzon is giving a major push to its recently relaunched VOD service Curzon Home Cinema with the release of Joe, starring Nicolas Cage.

On the day it appears in UK cinemas (July 25), the David Gordon Green film will be made available for home viewing for £7.99 - less than the price of a cinema ticket at many venues.

Details of the launch plans for Joe were revealed today at a “Curzon Platform Presentation” at the company’s new cinema in Victoria Street, London.

In the Us, Joe is reckoned to have made four times as much on VOD as it did in cinemas.

“For us, it is about having recognisable names and faces in independent films,” said Philip Mordecai, director of Curzon Home Cinema.

The Texas Tribune reports that Bernie Tiede, the Carthage man whose story of shooting the town's richest widow inspired Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater's 2011 movie Bernie, was released from Panola County Jail last week. After nearly two decades behind bars, Tiede was driven away from the jail with Linklater to a home the filmmaker owns in Austin.In festival news, the Los Angeles Film Festival announced its lineup last week and includes several Texas-connected movies: Land Ho!, produced by Austinite David Gordon Green; the Houston documentary Evolution of a Criminal, which premiered at this year's SXSW; and the short movie Molly, from local filmmaker Craig Elrod (The Man from Orlando).Austin's movie industry may take a hit after NBC announced Friday that its hour-long, post-apocalyptic drama Revolution has been cancelled, Austin Business Journal reports. Fox Searchlight Pictures and New Regency announced today that principal photography on Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy, Birdman, began on April 15th in New York City. They will co-finance the picture with Worldview Entertainment. Iñárritu co-wrote the script with Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Armando Bo.

The film stars Michael Keaton, Lindsay Duncan, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts.

The film will be a New Regency production with Iñárritu and John Lesher serving as producers. Worldview Entertainment’s Christopher Woodrow, Molly Conners and Hoyt David Morgan will executive produce alongside Jim Skotchdopole. The film will be produced by New Regency and Fox Searchlight Pictures will handle marketing and distribution.

The Tribeca Film Festival already has a slate of interesting independent and documentary films lined up this year, to which it can now add another group — the slate for this year’s Tribeca/Espn Sports Film Festival, which runs concurrent with the Tribeca. I want to congratulate Rider & Shiloh Strong for winning best online short for their amazing film, The Dungeon Master. Hollywoodnews.com: The 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival announced the winners of its competition categories Thursday night at a ceremony hosted at the W Union Square in New York City.

Not that the festival, co-founded by Robert De Niro, is finished. It runs through May 1, giving audiences time to go see the films that topped their respective categories.

“It’s wonderful to have reached our 10th edition and to be able to celebrate with all of these gifted filmmakers. We’ve been fortunate that as we have grown we have remained a place that welcomes a diverse range of stories told by compelling and exciting filmmakers,” said Jane Rosenthal, festival co-founder. “We are truly honored that the community has supported the Festival all these years – the community of New York and the international film community.”

Despite his recent string of quality performances in high-profile fare like Sideways and Spider-man 3, I've always refused to refer to Thomas Haden Church as anything other than "Wings star, Thomas Haden Church." But all of that's going to change on October 4th, when the actor appears in a new straight-to-Fearnet film and officially becomes "Zombie Roadkill star, Thomas Haden Church." The project, which is about a diabolically enchanted stretch of road on which the roadkill kills you back (ostensibly, but it's really an extended metaphor for the re-unification of Germany), doesn't only star one of the villains from Spider-Man 3, it's also directed by that film's director cinematographer caterer pluckiest production assistant, David Green (not to be confused with David Gordon Green, although you're welcome to try).
