It was recently announced that Neil Marshall was in talks to direct Hellfest for The Walking Dead producer Gale Anne Hurd. Now, we have word that a new writer has been brought on board to improve the existing script.

Gary Dauberman, who polished up both the Final Destination 5 and Nightmare on Elm Street remake scripts, has been hired to work on Hellfest. The original script was co-written by William Penick and Chris Sey.

Neil Marshall is familiar with Gary’s work, as Dauberman wrote the spec script Burst for Ghost House Pictures. Neil Marshall was previously attached to direct the film, which involved “a group of travelers stranded in a blizzard who find themselves being stalked and terrorized by an unseen, malicious force that causes them to spontaneously combust.”

According to The Wrap, CBS wants to begin shooting Hellfest this summer and sees the film as the first in a potential franchise.

A few months out from shooting, it’s being reported by TheWrap that Neil Marshall‘s Hellfest will be getting a rewrite. Reasons for the move haven’t been provided (though we can all presume it’s because the script isn’t very good), but, whatever the purpose, CBS Films have hired Gary Dauberman to reshape William Penick and Chris Sey‘s script.

Previous reports described the film as following “a costumed killer who systematically slaughters the unsuspecting visitors who come to a theme park on Halloween night,” a premise that CBS Films and producer Gale Ann Hurd would like to fashion into a franchise. Knowing this, the effort to get everything in order makes perfect sense. (Not that it doesn’t always.)

This is director Christopher Leitch's umpteenth television film and Secrets in the Walls was developed as a television film for the Lifetime Movie Network. If you are unaware, the Lifetime Movie Network and channel produce and distribute entertainment specifically for women and their families. Therefore, male characters are on the periphery and the messages involve issues of gender e.g. single mothers, coping with stress. This leads the film into, understandably, PG-13 territory, with Secrets in the Walls losing some of its edge in favour of a predictable plotline. However, let us put a spin on this review by looking at this myth of improper burial leading to hauntings and cleansing rituals, which are issues raised in this somewhat slowly paced thriller.
