Exclusive: Random House has taken the North American rights off the table to I’m on the Moon, the debut comedy memoir by former Late Show and Late Night With David Letterman producer Daniel Kellison.
The deal was sealed ahead of a scheduled auction that had already attracted offers from several major publishers.
Originally titled The Fuck-Up—a name that reflected Kellison’s own self-perception during those formative years—the memoir now goes by I’m on the Moon. It chronicles Kellison’s darkly funny and wildly unlikely journey from being raised by a four-time-divorced Vermont hippie mom and a one-eyed babysitter, to taking a hit of acid and deciding, with sudden clarity, that he had to work for his hero, David Letterman. “From the ominous glow of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant to the bright lights of 30 Rock…”

Buzz around Sean Price Williams’ feature-directing debut The Sweet East has been high since its debut at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. Working from a script by critic Nick Pinkerton, the aesthetic-defining Dp’s road trip finds Talia Ryder meeting a rogue’s gallery––Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Ayo Edebri, Jeremy O. Harris, and Andy Milonakis among them––and word’s consistently pegged it as one of 2023’s funniest. With Utopia releasing The Sweet East on December 1, there’s a trailer.
Rory O’Connor was taken with the film at Cannes, saying “Working from a script co-written with the influential critic Nick Pinkerton, Sean Price Williams’ punky directorial debut boasts both the cinematographer’s signature aesthetic and Pinkerton’s idiosyncratic, roguish worldview. Sean Price Williams, American cinematographer known for his usage of grain and natural/available lighting in his films, has turned to directing after over 50 indie feature films as a director of photography. Williams premiered his feature debut, The Sweet East, at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, which sees a high school girl traverse the east coast of the United States in an attempt to escape her mundane life. For all the chaos Williams’ debut offers, including a gun-man/conspiracy theorist (Andy Milonakis), a period piece actor (Jacob Elordi), and a kind neo-Nazi (Simon Rex), the film sets itself up as a wild journey through the armpits of America.
Talia Ryder stars as high school senior Lillian, who is so over her life and friends that she’ll do anything to break away to freedom. In comes a class trip to Washington D.C., where a gunman (Milonakis) opens fire in a...

A post-ironic picaresque born from a take-no-prisoners attitude so oppressive that it soon becomes its own kind of jail, Sean Price Williams’ “The Sweet East” amounts to something more than just a series of semi-connected trolls. But this sniveling little satire of modern American thought is never funnier or more sure of itself than when it makes you feel like an asshole for taking it too seriously.
Consider the film’s opening few minutes, which appear to tee up a lo-fi but legibly familiar sex comedy set on a high school trip to Washington, D.C., until things, uh, take a turn. We first meet Lillian as she lies in a hotel bed next to a blond mouth-breather who plays with his used condom like it’s a party balloon and brags about how he’s going to be a star. Later, after reuniting with the rest of her grade,...

In what feels like a welcome reprieve, Peacock dropped the entire season of Pete Davidson's pseudo-autobiographical series Bupkis in a nicely binge-able package, like the good old days of streaming originals. The show is both not what one thought it would be and exactly what one thought it would be at the same time. As good as the series may be, the fact that it shares quite a few similarities to other, recent series may dull the audience's reaction.
The series was announced in March 2022 with Pete Davidson developing it alongside Judah Miller, who executive produced Davidson's movie The King of Staten Island and has written for Crashing, another pseudo-autobiographical show based on the life of a stand-up comedian (Pete Homes). SNL writer Dave Sirius is the other co-creator. He also co-wrote The King of Staten Island alongside Davidson and Judd Apatow. It's a strong team, and they...

Criminal Minds: Evolution showrunner Erica Messer explains why it's harder for characters like Reid to return in the Paramount+ reboot. Taking a serialized approach to its storytelling, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 recently concluded its run. The revived version of the long-running drama series focused on the attempt to capture Voit (Zach Gilford), but it also featured a bit of romance, more humor, and a closer look at the lives of the Bau agents. It's a shift facilitated by the show's move to streaming, which has allowed for more narrative risks.
But, for all the benefits of streaming, it has meant a shorter episode count. While a typical season of the original Criminal Minds on CBS ran as high as 26 episodes, only dipping lower towards the end, Criminal Minds: Evolution consists of just ten. Messer explained to TVLine that the smaller number of episodes made it more difficult to bring back...

Talk about multiverses. In a parallel cosmos that is apparently just around the corner from you right now, a bunch of boys — and grown men — are living a life so different from yours that they might as well be aliens. You can see them in Owen Kline’s Directors’ Fortnight title Funny Pages, hanging out all day in a store that sells old comics, arguing about the finer plot points in the first superhero comics and the originality or otherwise of their own homemade zines.
They’re not an altogether easy watch. The strip lighting in the shop is unforgiving — and you just don’t want to see them eat, although some of them do little else. For these boys, it is seemingly a point of principle to talk with your mouth full. They are only interested in talking to each other, so it doesn’t really matter.

"I'm going on a walkabout." XYZ Films has released a full-length official trailer for King Knight, an indie dark comedy about a leader of a coven of witches and his downfall. Set to open in February this year. The first teaser landed last year during its festival run. Matthew Gray Gubler & Angela Sarafyan star in this comedy as Thorn & Willow, husband-and-wife high priest and priestess of a coven of witches in California - basically a hippie commune. When Willow unearths a secret from Thorn's past, their lives are thrown into turmoil and Thorn ventures out on a journey of self-discovery. The film's cast includes Nelson Franklin, Johnny Pemberton, Barbara Crampton, Ray Wise, Andy Milonakis, and the voices of Aubrey Plaza and AnnaLynne McCord. Oh yes this trailer finally leans into the totally wacky, weird crazy stuff going on in this. Right down to the pine-cone heads, third eye, and funky animated sequences.

Few have seen the cloistered politics of a witches’ coven, and “King Knight” serves to show there’s a lot more comedy and dancing than one might expect. This modern and absurd comedy posits a simple solution for overcoming self-acceptance and fear in relationships: Just try it out, man.
“King Knight” is written and directed by Richard Bates Jr., who sheds a less anarchic light on Los Angeles witch culture and dishes laughs without a hint of cynicism. The coven’s leaders Thorn and Willow (Matthew Gray Gubler and Angela Sarafyan) play as earnest relationship therapists for their fellow witches before succumbing to their own sticky pasts.
The cast of “King Knight” is stocked with comedic heavyweights. Andy Milonakis, Nelson Franklin, and Johnny Pemberton feature in roles as non-traditional witches and learn to find distance from the machines within.
Variety spoke with Bates Jr. ahead of “King Knight’s” screening at Fantasia.

Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight has an approximation of many things: humor, story, idiosyncrasy, character depth and likeability, production design, dialogue, cinematography, the concepts of witchcraft and self-actualization, and a basic sense of stakes or danger. Its half-formed regard for narrative and form are the haphazard basis of the director’s fifth feature, a superficial take on a hero’s journey that comes off like an unfinished script—an almost-film.
In King Knight, Matthew Gray Gubler (whose visage fits naturally into that of a cult leader) stars as Thorn––the quirky, not-evil, bird bath-selling high priest of a modern-day witches’ coven made up in its entirety of characters played by comedy actors Andy Milonakis, Kate Comer, Nelson Franklin, Johnny Pemberton, and Josh Fadem. Thorn wants to start a family with his life partner Willow (Angela Sarafyan), who’s reluctant to cow to his whims. As their Pagan fertility ritual of Beltane commences,...

We’re all good people, but we’re full of shit. Or, as the characters in King Knight say, we all have “poo in our butts”. We’re all imperfect human beings, some more malicious than others, and it’s the outsider who receives the brunt of that malice. Writer-director Richard Bates Jr. looks at the outsider with a dark sense of humor and with a farcical approach, creating one of the best comedies of the year. While looking at religion, conservatives, and society in general, King Knight aims to present Wicca in a positive light. It succeeds, leading to a journey of acceptance and rebirth.

The final tweet from Chadwick Boseman's Twitter account is the social media platform's most retweeted post of 2020. The tweet in question confirmed that the Black Panther star had passed away at the age of 43. In addition, the tweet is the platform's most liked of all time. Boseman passed away in August after a lengthy and secret battle with colon cancer. Not even the actor's closest colleagues who he worked with on multiple movies even knew that he was ill, as he chose to keep it from the public. Chadwick Boseman only told his closest family members and pastor.

Twitter has released its annual #ThisHappened look back at the year on its platform, and given the extreme nature of 2020, the results largely favor substance over frivolous memes.
“How do we possibly recap a year like this?” asked Tracy McGraw, the social media company’s communications chief, in a blog post Monday. “By turning our attention to how we all got through it together: the ways we kept ourselves entertained, the changes we made, and the messages of support that we shared with each other.”
Chadwick Boseman’s death from colon cancer at age 43 last August captivated a saddened world. The announcement of his passing via his official account became the most popular message ever posted on Twitter, with 7.5 million likes, and it led the year’s most-retweeted list as well with 3.1 million. (See more results below.)
The findings reflect the fact that more than three-quarters of daily Twitter users live outside the U.

Time is not on our side, especially in the era of “peak TV.” Perhaps this is why networks are hopping onto the time travel bandwagon. At this year’s network upfront presentations in May, four of the five broadcast networks plugged shows that revolved around a time travel element at their core.
Taking journeys through the fourth dimension is a concept that has appeared in fiction since the late 19th century, popularized by H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine.” The continued appeal of time travel boils down to wish fulfillment: the desire to visit other eras like a tourist, the yearning to relive or change the past, the curiosity about the future and the ability to squeeze more experiences into our ephemeral lives.
Although Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan disagree on whether time travel will someday be possible based on our apparent lack of visitors from the future, that hasn...

Neil deGrasse Tyson gets pretty animated when he starts talking about science. Now, he’s literally getting animated – on Disney Xd’s quirky new ‘toon “Future-Worm.”

Adi Shankar is not your typical movie maker. Along with producing features, including Dredd, The Grey, and A Walk Among the Tombstones, he also worked on a number of short films, like Venom: Truth in Journalism with True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten, and the dark and gritty Power/Rangers short he made with Joseph Kahn. Yesterday we found out that producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Punisher: Dirty Laundry) would team with Stewart Yost to co-direct a dark new superhero series for HBO titled Gods And Secrets, which is said to be (and very much sounds to be) inspired by Alan Moore's Watchmen. Now The Wrap reports that Denise Richards (Wild Things, Starship Troopers, The World Is Not Enough) and Jane Seymour (Live And Let Die, How I Met Your Mother, Battlestar Galactica) have joined the cast in unspecified roles. Gods And Secrets will focus on the exploits of a superteam known as the "Guardians of Justice", and will explore "the darker ramifications of a world filled with superheroes — for the people they protect and the famous heroes themselves." Following on from his work as a producer on "Dredd" and "The Grey" along with the much talked about "Power/Rangers" fan film, Adi Shankar is set to team with Stewart Yost for his directorial debut effort "Gods And Secrets".
The project is described as a dark drama akin to Alan Moore's "Watchmen" in that it will explore the darker logical underpinnings of superhero tropes in a world in which superheroes exist and the resulting celebrity culture are front and center.
The story deals with what happens when a tragedy strikes the super heroic team Guardians of Justice, and in its aftermath secrets are revealed, lives are changed, and the war to end all wars begins.
Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, Sharni Vinson and Andy Milonakis star in the project. No further specifics about it are available at this time.

Adi Shankar, the producer behind the 'Bootleg Universe' one-shot films Power/Rangers & The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and 2012's Dredd will make his directorial debut with HBO's Gods And Secrets. According to Deadline, Shankar will team up with Stewart Yost to co-direct this dark superhero drama that's said to be inspired by Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel, Watchmen. The drama will feature an original team named 'Guardians Of Justice', and explore the more secretive and shady aspects of celebrity culture by applying it to superheroes. The series is set to star WWE's Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga), Kellan Lutz (The Legend Of Hercules), Sharni Vinson (You're Next) and Andy Milonakis. The core premise appears intruiging, while the project's placement on HBO should be enough to pique most people's interest. The cast is admittedly rather uninspiring, but Shankar has impressed in the past with his Bootleg one-shots.
