Evil Dead’s Fede Alvarez is Going to Hell — or at Least, Into Dante’s Inferno
Coming off the blood-splattering goodness of the “Evil Dead” remake, Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez is now looking to not just talk about sending your souls to the pits of Hell, he’s actually going there by helming a live-action big-screen version of the videogame “Dante’s Inferno” for Universal. Based on the Electronic Arts game of the same name, “Dante’s Inferno” will follow a knight name Dante Aligheri, “who with the help of the poet Virgil ventures into the nine rings of hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice. In the process, he becomes an unwitting pawn in an ancient war between heaven and hell.” Oh, that old thing. The game was previously adapted into an animated movie called “Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic” in 2010, that our very own Dedpool reviewed here. You can check it out if you’re so inclined. Or not. Really, it’s entirely up to you.

'Evil Dead' director Fede Alvarez in 'Dante's Inferno' talks
Bridget Hoffman in The Evil Dead (1981)
Fede Alvarez has entered talks for Dante's Inferno.

The Evil Dead director is in line to helm Universal Pictures' video game adaptation, reports Deadline.

The Electronic Arts action game was based on the legendary Italian poem The Divine Comedy.

It saw writer Dante Aligheri drawn into a battle between heaven and hell.

Former Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham will produce with EA Entertainment vice president Patrick O'Brien.

Uruguayan director Alvarez made his feature debut with the remake of Sam Raimi's cult horror Evil Dead.

Universal acquired the rights to the adaptation after Dante's Inferno's release in 2010.

Fede Alvarez Heads Into Dante’s Inferno
Back in 2010, Universal Pictures won the bidding war for the film rights to the Electronic Arts version of Dante’s Inferno, but not much of anything had been heard about the project since. Now, three years later, it looks like the studio has finally found its director, with Evil Dead helmer Fede Alvarez in negotiations to direct.

This film will be based on the video game version of the story, which was adapted from the first part of Dante Alighieri’s 14th-century epic poem known as The Divine Comedy. In the video game version, Dante is re-imagined as a Templar knight and has to journey through the nine circles of hell. His goal is reclaiming the soul of his love, Beatrice, from the hands of Lucifer.

Alvarez has also been rumored for the Doctor Strange film. While this project doesn’t necessarily take him out of consideration for that movie,...

Fede Alvarez Will Direct Dante's Inferno for Universal
Jane Levy in Evil Dead (2013)
Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez is in talks to direct Dante's Inferno, an adaptation of the Electronic Arts video game for Universal Pictures.

The project has been in development for many years, with Universal securing the rights to the game in 2008, two years before its release. The game is based on the famous literary work, following Dante Aligheri, a knight who teams up with the poet Virgil to rescue Dante's lover Beatrice from the nine rings of hell. He eventually becomes a pawn in a war between heaven and hell.

Jay Basu (The Dinosaur Project) wrote the most current draft of the screenplay, with Bruce C. McKenna writing an earlier draft. Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing alongside EA Entertainment vice president Patrick O'Brien. No production schedule was given.

Fede Alvarez revealed in March that Evil Dead 2 is already in the works, although it has not been confirmed that...

Fede Alvarez to Direct Dante’s Inferno?
Before EA even released the Dante’s Inferno video game in 2010, they were shopping the concept around to a number of movie studios and Universal acquired the rights. When the game didn’t perform as well as expected and a sequel didn’t go right into development, we expected that was the last we’d hear of movie plans. However, it’s being reported that the project is moving forward with Evil Dead‘s Fede Alvarez at the helm.

Deadline is reporting that Alvarez is currently in talks to direct, with Eric Newman, Marc Abraham, and EA’s Patrick O’Brien serving as producers. It’s quite possible that Alvarez will want to make changes to the script, but it was previously written by Jay Basu with an earlier draft written by Bruce McKenna.

There are no additional details at this time, but we’ll keep readers posted on any developments.

Fede Alvarez to Helm Dante's Inferno
Universal Pictures' take on Electronic Arts' Dante's Inferno video game has found a helmer in Fede Alvarez. Deadline reports that the Evil Dead director will tackle the adaptation of the game, itself loosely inspired by the first third of Dante Alighieri's 14th century epic poem, "The Divine Comedy." Released in 2010, Dante's Inferno reimagines Alighieri as a Templar Knight traversing the nine circles of Hell to rescue the soul of his beloved Beatrice. Although the plot of the game represents a significant departure from the original text, the specific layout of Hell is directly inspired by Alighieri's words. Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are set to produce alongside EA's Patrick O.Brien with Jay Basu ( The Dinosaur Project , Fast Girls ) having turned in the...

Universal Cooks Up Thirteen Ways to Scare Us
Found footage. With low budget success stories for the bigger studios, this medium is here to stay. Now Universal is looking to tap into the same vein of gold that others have with the new flick Thirteen.

According to Variety, Universal has pre-emptively bought Thirteen, a spec by Benjamin Magid, and set it up with Uni-based Strike Entetrainment and Brooklyn Weaver at Energy Entertainment.

Veteran production exec Kristel Laiblin brought the project in to Strike's Eric Newman and will oversee. Thirteen centers on possession and is understood to utilize a mixture of found footage point of views. The story is reminiscent of 1990's Flatliners, which starred Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland as medical school students experimenting with the line between life and death.

The sale closed Friday night. More as it comes.

Favreau In Talks For "Magic Kingdom"
"Iron Man" director Jon Favreau is skipping the comic adaptations for now and headed to the Mouse House where he is in talks to direct the "Magic Kingdom" feature film says Heat Vision.

As previously reported, Disney plans to combine some of their famed rides and attractions into a family adventure akin to the "Night at the Museum" films but set within the confines of the titular Florida theme park reports Variety.

"Battlestar Galactica" creator Ronald D. Moore had penned a previous Disneyland-set version, but a new writer was being sought. If Favreau signs onto 'Kingdom' as part of a development deal he and Disney are in talks about, he'll likely have a hand in choosing a new writer to further develop the property.

Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce the film which is still likely quite some time off and won't interfere with Favreau's commitments to finishing up...

With 'Psycho Killer,' Eli Roth Brings Ass-Kicking Females Back to Horror
Filed under: Movie News, Cinematical

Eli Roth is at it again with, you probably guessed it, another horror film. According to TheWrap, the man behind 'Hostel' and 'Cabin Fever' is reteaming with his 'The Last Exorcism' co-producer, Eric Newman, to get the film 'Psycho Killer' up and running at StudioCanal, the studio that produced 'The Last Exorcism.' After that $2 million production went on to gross more than $40 million domestically, it's no surprise StudioCanal agreed to fully finance 'Psycho Killer.'

The script comes from Andrew Kevin Walker who's responsible for 'The Wolfman,' 'Sleepy Hollow' and 'Se7en.' For the first 20% of his story, the audience will follow the titular character, a nameless and masked psycho killer who amasses a large body count across the United States. While in Nebraska, he winds up killing a highway patrolman while his fellow officer, who's also his wife, watches from a distance.

Disney's "Magic Kingdom" On Film
As "The Country Bears" and the first incarnation of "The Haunted Mansion" demonstrated, not all Disney-owned theme park rides can be translated to the big screen with the success of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Rather than letting their lesser rides wither however, Disney plans to combine them in "Magic Kingdom", a family adventure akin to the "Night at the Museum" films but set within the confines of the titular Florida theme park reports Variety.

"Battlestar Galactica" showrunner Ronald Moore previously penned a script for the project which was set in Disneyland at the time. The studio is now looking for a new scribe to develop the property which could showcase a number of high-profile Disney characters in an ensemble piece already drawing comparisons to Marvel's "The Avengers".
