Image
Is Blue Eye Samurai coming back for major fans? ( Photo Credit – Netflix )

After leaving fans spellbound in 2023, Blue Eye Samurai has finally stirred from its silence, and the news is big. The acclaimed Netflix animated series, which slashed its way into hearts and headlines with razor-sharp storytelling and breathtaking visuals, is officially returning.

However, the road to season two isn’t a short one, and fans will require samurai patience, as the next chapter will not arrive until 2026.

Blue Eye Samurai: A Mission Fueled by Vengeance

The Netflix show, set in Edo-period Japan, centers on Mizu, a blade-forging warrior hiding more than just her steel. With piercing blue eyes in a society that brands them a mark of shame and a secret identity as a woman, Mizu’s mission is brutal. She aims to hunt down the four white men who could be her father.

‘Blue Eye Samurai’ Season 2 Lands Director in ‘Ultraman Rising’ Alum
Image
Last year, Ultraman fans were gifted with a new and exciting 3D-animated installment of the franchise. Ultraman: Rising was a fun ride that made fans hungry for more, but sadly it looks like sequels are not on Netflix plans. However, the streamer hasn't overlooked the talent of one of the movie's directors. John Aoshima has landed another massive gig inside the streamer's projects: he will helm one episode of the upcoming — and highly anticipated — Season 2 of the hit animated series Blue Eye Samurai.

The announcement hails from Deadline, which also revealed that the director will keep himself busy. In addition to the directing gig at Netflix, the filmmaker signed an exclusive multi-year overall development deal with Warner Bros. Animation. This means that Aoshima will be in charge of developing several feature animated projects from the studio, and he will also have the chance of directing projects that he feels inclined to.

Exclusive: Hot animation director John Aoshima (Ultraman: Rising) has entered into an exclusive multi-year overall development deal with Bill Damaschke’s Warner Bros. Pictures Animation in feature animation, Deadline has learned. Under the deal, he will develop original and studio projects as Director in Development.

Boasting over 25 years of experience in both television and feature animation, Aoshima recently made his feature debut as co-director of the Annie- and Ves-nominated film Ultraman: Rising for Netflix. A fan asked if another Ultraman film was coming. Tindle’s response was clear and blunt: “I’d love to make another, but currently, it’s not in the cards. However, I’ve just started working on something I’m very excited about:) More to come…”

‘Ultraman: Rising’ Director Breaks Down Giant Monster Movie Climax
Image
Netflix’s “Ultraman: Rising” serves as a reinvention and a reintroduction of the classic monster-battling character who first debuted on Japanese television in 1966. In the years since, Ultraman has shifted and changed until he’s now the star of his very own animated feature from writer-director Shannon Tindle.

In this version, our hero, Ken Sato (Christopher Sean), is reluctantly taking over the mantle of Ultraman from his aging father (Gedde Watanabe). And he’s got an even bigger conundrum when he is forced to raise the baby of a fallen kaiju that he had been fighting. “Ultraman: Rising” has some stunning action set pieces, breathlessly animated by Industrial Light & Magic in a style that evokes the original “Ultraman” series, along with classic anime, old tokusatsu movies and beloved manga. But the true magic of the movie lies in its underlying emotion and its themes of responsibility, family and animal rights.

‘Ultraman: Rising’ Filmmakers On Graphic-Style Animation, A “Family Theme” For The Score And Showing A New Side Of The Superhero
Image
Ultraman has been a prominent media franchise in Japan since the television series Ultra Q first premiered in 1966. Even from a distance, the character made an impact on a young Shannon Tindle growing up in rural Kentucky, who would go on to become the writer-director of Netflix’s animated Ultraman: Rising. Along with co-director John Aoshima, the pair brought out a new side of the kaiju fighting giant with a focus on caretaking rather than destruction.

The film follows Ken Sato (Christopher Sean), a baseball star who returns to Japan to take the mantle of Ultraman when his father retires. Though his brash and self-centered attitude doesn’t get him many fans, his outlook soon changes when he becomes the caretaker of Emi, a newborn kaiju.

Deadline had the opportunity to sit down with Tindle and Aoshima, as well as VFX supervisor Hayden Jones and composer Scot Stafford at Industrial...

‘Ultraman: Rising’ VFX supervisor Hayden Jones and composer Scot Stafford on ‘exciting challenges’ of Netflix animated film
Image
The animation team behind Netflix’s “Ultraman: Rising” held a recent press event at Skywalker Sound and Industrial Light & Magic, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the complex work that went into directors Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima‘s film about Ken Sato, a superstar baseball player who returns to Japan to become the latest hero to carry the mantle of Ultraman. Ken’s world gets complicated when he is compelled to raise a newborn kaiju monster, the offspring of his greatest enemy, as his own child.

Visual effects supervisor Hayden Jones and composer Scot Stafford each sat down with Gold Derby to discuss their work on the film. Watch the video interviews above.

Jones won an Emmy for his work on “The Mandalorian” in 2020, and explains how the challenges of VFX in animation are different than live action. “It’s scope and scale,” he says. “You have to build absolutely...

'Ultraman: Rising' Was Originally an Entirely Different Story
Image
For over two decades, Shannon Tindle, along with his co-director and former schoolmate John Aoshima, have been trying to bring the story that evolved into Ultraman: Rising to the big screen. The two share decades of animation experience, from having shepherded the early development of Kubo and the Two Strings at Laika and other projects at Sony Animation, where this particular project was originally developed. After leaving Sony, the two partnered with Netflix, and what was originally titled Made in Japan evolved to tie the tale into the lore of the legendary Ultraman, the beloved character created by Eiji Tsuburaya and his collaborators that has thrived for half a century in films, live-action tokusatsu programs, manga, and other forms of storytelling.

Breaking Down That Epic ‘Ultraman: Rising’ Water Battle
Image
With Ultraman: Rising,” animator-turned-director Shannon Tindle combined his love of the superhero anime franchise with a parenting drama wrapped around Ilm’s dazzling 2D animated look drawn from manga and anime.

It all comes together in an epic water battle involving Ultraman (Christopher Sean), Ultradad (Gedde Watanabe), and baby Kaiju, Emi. First Ultraman and Emi fight Mecha Gigangtron, only to discover that the real Gigantron (Emi’s mom) is still alive underneath. She then joins Ultradad as part of a foursome to fight Dr. Onda, head of the Kaiju Defense Force, who commands the robotic Destroyer.

Tindle, who participated in a recent press confab at Skywalker Ranch and Ilm in San Francisco, told IndieWire that his choice of water for the climactic battle was purely economical. He couldn’t afford to destroy a city and crowds. “I knew that I could make it on the water, and it would allow...

Exploring the soul of Ultraman: Rising with an in-depth look at the film and interviews with directors Shannon Tindle, John Aoshima & more
Image
It took everything I had not to raise my hands in the air as if riding the front car of a rollercoaster as our shuttle bobbed and weaved through the winding stretch of Lucas Valley Road. With each farmhouse and animal enclosure we passed, I felt more and more lightheaded. It could have been the increase in altitude, but likely, we were on our way to one of the most historic retreats in Hollywood, Skywalker Ranch. I could not think of a better place to learn about Ultraman: Rising, an animated film honoring its title character’s legacy and cinematic history.

What is Ultraman: Rising about before we get into the nitty-gritty? The story centers on baseball star Ken Sato, who reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of Ultraman. But the titanic superhero meets his match when he is forced to adopt a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby Kaiju, Emi.

Will an animated movie ever win Best Picture? ‘Ultraman: Rising’ directors explain ‘stigma’ and why they’re still hopeful
Image
Will an animated movie ever win Best Picture at the Oscars? It’s a question many people have asked ever since Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” became the first nominated in the prestigious category 32 years ago. Since then, just two more have been nominated: “Up” in 2010 and “Toy Story 3” in 2011.

In 2020, “Parasite” made history as the first international film to win Best Picture. The victory for director Bong Joon-ho‘s South Korean thriller was a sign that the Academy’s concerted effort to become more diverse had paid off, resulting in new possibilities for what kind of film could claim Hollywood’s top prize.

Ultraman: Rising Visual Effects Supervisor Hayden Jones Shares How Netflix Animated Movie "Pushed Boundaries" Of VFX
Image
Ultraman: Rising continues the beloved Ultraman universe that first began in the 1960s, with the new Netflix original treading new ground in terms of visuals and storytelling. The film has set itself apart as an original kaiju movie that focuses more on the protection of the giant creatures than battling them, after new protagonist Ken Sato discovers an egg of a baby Gigantron that imprints on him as its parent. The film is directed by duo Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima, who previously collaborated on the 2016 release Kubo and the Two Strings.

Rising marks the introduction of Sato, who's only recently taken up the Ultraman mantle from his father, and must navigate his heroic duty with the duty he has to his own family and Emi. The film has received critical praise for its visual direction, much of which was spearheaded by VFX supervisor Hayden Jones. Jones is an industry veteran in effects,...

Ultraman: Rising Directing Team Say The Key To Netflix Animated Movie's Success Was "Creative Trust"
Image
Ultraman: Rising is the latest in a long line of media from the IP, however, the new Netflix take on the series doesnt require viewers to know an immense amount of lore to enjoy it. It introduces brand-new protagonist Ken Sato, who takes over the Ultraman mantle from his father. The newest comes from co-directors Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima, who previously collaborated together on the 2016 film Kubo and the Two Strings.

Though many projects in the Ultraman franchise have focused on fighting kaiju, Rising focuses more on their protection. After a fight with the kaiju Gigantron, Ken discovers a newly hatched baby of the same creature, which imprints on him as a parent. This family focus of Ultraman: Rising - both when it comes to raising the kaiju Emi and Kens relationships with other characters in the film - serves it well, earning the film critical praise for its...

Film Analysis: Ultraman: Rising (2024) by Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima
Image
While “Ultraman” is primarily known as a prominent figure in television, films like Kazuya Konaka's “Ultraman: The Next” and Shinji Higuchi's “Shin Ultraman” have shown that the beloved superhero can work well within a movie format. The fictional icon's latest cinematic outing, the Japanese-American animated co-production “Ultraman: Rising,” brings together quite a team. Netflix Animation and Tsuburaya Productions collaborate with animation by Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm), originally founded by filmmaker George Lucas. Making his directorial debut is Shannon Tindle, a prominent animation designer whose work includes on shows like “Samurai Jack” and movies such as “Kubo and the Two Strings.” He also writes the screenplay alongside Marc Haimes. John Aoshima is co-directing with Tindle, who similarly has an experienced animation resume, including on the hit comedy series “Futurama.” These creative minds come together and deliver a visually astonishing, if rather formulaic, family feature.

A Legendary VFX Company Is Making Great Animated Movies Again – And Transformers One Is Just The Start [Annecy]
Image
The hierarchy of power in the animation universe is about to change. With Disney being all but creatively bankrupt, Illumination making bank but through mediocre movies like "Despicable Me 4," and DreamWorks primarily focusing on sequels and franchises, the time is ripe for a new player to come in and shake things up the way Don Bluth Productions did in the '80s. Well, it seems that new player has arrived, and they've been here for decades: Industrial Light & Magic, better known as Ilm.

In case you need a refresher, Ilm is the legendary special effects company founded by George Lucas to make "Star Wars." In the '80s and 90s, Ilm revolutionized cinema, delivering some of the biggest moments of pure movie magic in cinema history by creating the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park," all the special effects in "Star Wars," the T-1000 Terminator, the Transformers in the first Michael Bay movie,...

‘Ultraman: Rising’ Reinvents the Iconic Franchise with the Hand-Drawn Look of Manga and Anime
Image
While Ilm was completing the animation and VFX for Netflix‘s “Lost Ollie” (2022), the live-action/CG limited series about a floppy-eared toy trying to find its way back home, creator Shannon Tindle shared with them some of the manga- and anime-influenced artwork for his passion project with Netflix, “Ultraman: Rising” (currently streaming). His plan was to turn the Japanese pop culture phenomenon into an action-packed, heartwarming ode to parenthood and finding balance in life.

Tindle’s hope was to entice Ilm into doing the animation, even though the VFX powerhouse hadn’t made an animated feature since the Oscar-winning “Rango” (2011). Gathered in his Burbank office, Tindle showed off examples of Ultraman’s iconic red and silver look, fighting kaiju in Tokyo and bonding with his adopted 35-foot, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl.

“It looked amazing and I was completely sold,” Ilm VFX supervisor Hayden Jones told IndieWire. “We had some production...

‘Ultraman: Rising’ Review: A Famous Japanese Franchise Gets a Heartwarming American Reboot
Image
For millions of Japanese viewers as well as countless fans across the globe, the Ultraman franchise, pitting a giant superhero against giant kaiju creatures of all shapes and breeds, has been a popular staple since it was first launched as a TV series in the 1960s.

But for this critic and likely many other viewers, especially in the U.S., the new English-language feature-length version, Ultraman: Rising, will be their first encounter with a character who’s been taking flight for over a half a century in live-action, animated and manga formats.

The experience is not unlike discovering Star Wars for the first time by watching the 2015 J.J. Abrams movie, whose Jedis and Storm Troopers won’t ring much of a bell if you haven’t seen the earlier ones. Still, the the team behind this endearing if familiar Ultraman reboot does a good job at ushering us into a...

‘Ultraman: Rising’ Mid-Credits Scene Explained: What Is Nebula M78?
Image
Shannon Tindle and John Aoshima’s Ultraman: Rising told the story of Ken Sato, the son of Emiko Sato, and Ultraman, Professor Sato (also known as Ultradad). Due to Sato’s duties as Ultraman, protecting the city from Kaiju attacks, he couldn’t really focus on his family life, thereby leading to a rift between him, his wife, and his son. While Sato remained in Japan, Emiko and Ken moved to the United States to focus on his education and baseball skills. Sato grew old and retired as Ultraman. So, Emiko urged Ken to take on the mantle and continue his baseball career in Japan. Ken was hesitant about it, but when Emiko disappeared one day, he returned to Japan to look for her. Yes, he claimed that he came back home to bring his brand of baseball to his country of origin and to be Ultraman. But the truth...
