Sony Pictures has released a trailer for an upcoming sci-fi extraterrestrial conspiracy thriller called UFO. The movie has a decent cast that includes Gillian Anderson, Ella Purnell, David Strathairn, and Benjamin Beatty. But, unfortunately, the movie doesn't look very good at all. It's so not good that it's not even being released in theaters. This one is going straight to home entertainment. I hope Anderson didn't ditch the X-Files franchise to make movies like this!

In the world of boring movie titles, it's doesn't get any more boring than UFO but it's also a concise description of what Ryan Eslinger's new movie is about: an unidentified flying object.

Alex Sharp (a transplant from the stage who recently made a splash with To the Bone and How to Talk to Girls at Parties), stars as Derek, a bright college student who becomes obsessed with a UFO sighting at a local airport.

He refuses to believe the easy answers provided by the establishment and starts digging around, convinced that it was a UFO which also happens to have sent a message in binary code which Derek has cracked (when apparently no one else has).

Anderson plays a college professor and the movie also stars David Strathairn as a government official and Ella...

"You don't automatically jump to the most extreme explanation." Sony has released an official trailer for a movie titled UFO, which is going straight to VOD and skipping theaters entirely. Once you see this trailer, you'll know why - it looks pretty awful. So cheesy, so bad. UFO is about UFO sightings at airports, and one specific incident which sets off a big chain of events. Sony is celebrating UFO Day (which is apparently a thing) by releasing the trailer for the appropriately named “UFO,” which finds a college student who’s pretty sure he saw a flying saucer as a kid trying desperately to prove that the truth is out there. Tickets for film programs from July 8-12 at the Tivoli are $12 each; $10 for students with valid and current photo ID and for Cinema St. Louis members with valid membership cards. Advance tickets are on sale at the Tivoli Theatre box office (5-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 2-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday). No phone sales, but tickets can be purchased online (see below). Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Daniel And Abraham is a surprisingly impressive three-man show. Director Ryan Eslinger co-wrote with stars Gary Lamadore (Abraham) and David Williams (Daniel), and the three of them filled out the rest of the crew positions. Aside from some minor details – some dodgy sound mixing, plus Daniel’s beard looks a little too groomed for being in the woods for over a week – that bugged me just a little, the film mostly worked. The whole time, though, once it got going, there was something that felt off about it that I couldn’t shake.

Wonder what those limousines were doing in front of the Tivoli last week? It was the10th Annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and congratulations to everyone who had a hand in the 65 films that were shown. The Cinema St. Louis event was held July 17-22 and focused exclusively on the works, both shorts and features, of St. Louis-based filmmakers, as well as expatriates with strong local connections who have gone on to work in other cities. Attendance was high, the audiences enthusiastic, and it was great to see so much local talent on display. A packed post-fest party was held at the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill Thursday night and awards were presented in various categories. June 17, 2010 – The 10th Annual St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase (Slfs), an annual presentation of the nonprofit Cinema St. Louis, serves as the area’s primary venue for films made by local artists. Slfs screens works that were written, directed, edited or produced by St. Louis natives or those with strong local ties.

The 16 film programs that screen at the Tivoli from July 18-22 serve as Slfs’s centerpiece. The programs range from full-length fiction features and documentaries to multi-film compilations of fiction and documentary shorts. Most programs include post-screening Q&As with filmmakers. There are 65 films in this year’s event.

In addition to the screenings, Slfs offers filmmaking seminars for anyone interested in the moviemaking process.

ROME -- Ryan Eslinger's "When a Man Falls in the Forest", a Golden Bear nominee at this year's Berlinale, and "Numb" from Harris Goldberg are among the dozen films that will appear in competition at the first Drake International Film Festival, set for June 23-30 near Naples.

The lineup was announced amid controversy over the leadership of the new festival, which will be held in the sprawling Reggia di Caserta, a World Heritage Site since 1996. Several of the event's top officials were replaced in recent weeks, with some complaining loudly in the Italian press.

But organizers promise the festival will be a hit.

With a screening schedule that focuses on new filmmakers and innovative technologies, Drake's competition lineup also includes Robbie Moffat-directed action flick "Axe Raiders", "Johnny 316" from Erick Ifergan, Andrew Black-helmed comedy "Moving McAllister" and "The Last Request" from John DeBellis and starring Danny Aiello.

Other competition titles include Nick Lyon's gritty rape and murder mystery "Punk Love"; "Gumiho Gajok" (The Fox Family) from South Korea's Hyung-gon Lee; "The Heart of the Earth", a romance from Antonio Cuadri; Brett Leonard's action fantasy "Highlander: The Source"; "The Melon Route" from Croatia's Branko Schmidt; and Augustin Diaz Yanes' Viggo Mortensen starrer "Alatriste", winner of three Goya Awards earlier this year.

The other French films in competition -- Andre Techine's "The Witness" and Jacques Rivette's "Don't Touch The Axe" -- also will have their world premieres in Berlin.

Asian cinema, which was largely absent from last year's lineup, returns in force with two Chinese productions -- Wang Quan'an drama "Tuya's Marriage" and Li Yu's urban portrait "Lost In Beijing" -- and two from Korea -- Zhang Lu's "Desert Dream", about a refugee from North Korea who flees to a barren village on the Chinese/Mongolian border, and "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK", the highly-anticipated new drama from Park Chan-wook ("Oldboy").

NEW YORK -- The 10th annual Slamdance Film Festival unveiled its competition lineup Wednesday, with 18 features and 21 shorts making the cut. The Park City-based fest -- which coincides with the Sundance Film Festival -- is set to roll out Jan. 17-24. Among the features vying for Slamdance top honors, seven are docus and 13 overall will make premieres in Park City. Highlights include the features X, Y, a big-screen adaptation of the cult novel by Michael Blumlein from director Vladimir Vitkin; Memron, Nancy Hower's improvisational comedy about corporate fraud; and Ryan Eslinger's Madness and Genius, starring Tom Noonan.
