MPM Premium Snags Sales Rights to Colombian Doc ‘Transfariana,’ Drops Trailer Ahead of its Berlinale World Premiere (Exclusive)
Image
Paris-based MPM Premium has snagged the international sales rights to French-Colombian documentary “Transfariana” ahead of its world premiere in the Berlinale’s Panorama section.

The documentary, by French director-cinematographer Joris Lachaise, explores the unusual collaboration between the since-disbanded Colombian guerrilla group Farc and the trans activist movement in Colombia that led to changes in local laws.

A TV version running 1.5 hours was acquired by European culture TV channel, Arte.

In a trailer bowing exclusively in Variety, it opens with Jaison Murillo introducing himself as a political prisoner and Farc guerrilla member. He relates how Trans Laura was transferred to his prison compound where they met and formed a relationship. He’s expelled by his group but it fires him up even more to fight for change. With the historic peace pact between the government and Farc paving the way for change, both marginalized communities find common ground in their struggle for their rights.

Director Felipe Ríos on Karlovy Vary Competition Film ‘The Man of the Future’
José Soza and Antonia Giesen in The Man of the Future (2019)
Chilean filmmaker Felipe Ríos’ “The Man of the Future” holds the unique distinction of being the only film from his country to participate in the main competition at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where it world premiered on Wednesday evening.

Set on the highways of the the seemingly endless ranges of Chile’s southern Andes, Ríos’ road film tracks an estranged father and daughter who end up on the same lonely road south, he a truckdriver and she a hitchhiker in separate rigs.

The unplanned encounter offers the opportunity of reconciliation, and possibly a path to a shared future. The minimalist film set in anything-but minimal surroundings also proved a chance for Ríos to face his own troubled relationship with his father.

“The Man of the Future” is produced by Chile’s Quijote Films and co-producers Sagrado Cine and La Unión de los Ríos. Celebrated Argentine filmmaker Alejandro Fadel, a two-time...

‘Trauma’ DVD Review
Stars: Catalina Martin, Macarena Carrere, Ximena del Solar, Dominga Bofill, Daniel Antivilo, Eduardo Paxeco, Felipe Ríos, Claudio Riveros, Florencia Heredia | Written and Directed by Lucio A. Rojas

I was lucky enough to watch a debut screening of Trauma at the inaugural Soho Horror Film festival, where the crowd were already hyped for this harrowing, messed up piece, and it did not disappoint. Fair comparisons can be made to the likes of A Serbian Film, Martyrs and Hate Crime, relentlessly uncomfortable and chilling in its execution.

When a party of four female friends head to a cabin in rural Chile, stumbling along the hostile locals along the way, they soon learn that their modern, independent ways are not welcome. After settling into their home for the weekend, they are set upon by a maniac Father and Son duo, and subjected to a life changing evening, forever scarring them. Escaping the clutches of the pair,...
