Nicolas Cage didn’t exactly leap at Face/Off when it first crossed his table. In fact, he politely declined. However, leave it to director John Woo to flip the script. Woo cleverly pitched the film to Cage as a cerebral mind-bender, not the bullet-fueled, identity-swapping spectacle it truly was. And the result was that Cage signed on, and the rest is history. The 1997 cult hit went on to score 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, pulled in box office glory, and landed Cage and John Travolta in what many fans still call their best roles. But that road to casting was nothing sort of a wild ride!

Before it became a late-’90s action masterpiece, Face/Off was pitched with a totally different lineup in mind.

Back in college, my Saturday nights were a little less boring after one generous internet installer hooked me up with “complimentary” cable. Mind you, I didn’t ask for this surprise add-on, but I also didn’t let it go to waste. Anyhow, I soon became very acquainted with those Original Movies found on Syfy (née the Sci-Fi Channel or simply Sci Fi).

It was as if the powers that be had come together and made an evening of entertainment that catered to my horror tastes — carnage, schlock, and most of all, monsters. And every so often, that block of niche, unapologetic programming offered an Original that wasn’t quite like the others. Yes, the most dangerous night on television occasionally delivered an enjoyable B-movie like Frankenfish. Even to this day I rewatch it with sincere fondness and pleasure, as opposed to the sense of irony required for other Syfy flicks.

Rebecca Hall has been set to star in the zombie-action horror film Zero Protocol.

Zero Protocol is directed by Debs Paterson and written by Dan Hall (The Silent Hour).

In the action horror movie, “An NYPD commissioner battles to manage a city-wide zombie outbreak exploding in real time, only to discover that her teenage daughter is trapped in the middle of the red zone.”

The juxtaposition of the horror and Western genres is an unusual one, for sure. But there’s something rather enjoyable about seeing the two seemingly opposed genres skillfully fused. Organ Trail and Bone Tomahawk are just a couple of examples of the kind of magic that stems from the effective use of this unholy union. We recently noticed that a forgotten horror Western is streaming on Prime Video and that’s the kind of good news we cannot keep to ourselves. The film we’re referencing is Alex Turner’s Dead Birds.

Dead Birds didn’t make a huge splash upon release and still remains somewhat under-seen more than 20 years later. The film does, however, have a small cult following and even managed to win over a few critics. Perhaps some of the appeal comes from the creatives involved. Dying for Sex is an upcoming comedy-drama series created by Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock. Based on the podcast series of the same name by Nikki Boyer, the FX series follows Molly, a middle-aged woman who is diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. Soon after finding out that she doesn’t have much time to live, she ends her marriage of 15 years and tries to explore her sexuality.

Exclusive: Loretta Ramos has been named Senior Director of Blumhouse and K Period Media’s Screamwriting Fellowship program.

Ramos previously served as interim head of the Sundance Institute’s Women of Sundance program.

In her role, she will be responsible for overseeing the program for the two companies, which is run in partnership with the Sundance Institute.

The invite-only program is accepting recommendations for applicants until Friday.

Legendary's Monsterverse just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each passing movie. Before Adam Wingard joined Legendary's Monsterverse to helm Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he directed what is arguably one of the greatest slasher films of the 2010s: You're Next. Written by Simon Barrett, the film focuses on an estranged family who find themselves under attack by a group of masked assailants during a family reunion. It's a familiar premise, but one Wingard and Barrett handled with a deft hand that's filled with black humor and gory kills. Now, the pair are discussing the sequel they had planned, which they're glad they never made.

The chat between the two comes during a new commentary track on You're Next, which was released yesterday on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited (via Bloody Disgusting). The film saw its killers decked out in a lamb, a fox, and a tiger mask, and while Lamb Mask (L.

You’re Next put a delightfully bloody spin on the home invasion genre, earning the film a passionate cult following that has only grown since its release in 2011. Although the ending of You’re Next did leave the door open for a sequel, a follow-up never materialized. However, that doesn’t mean that director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett didn’t consider it.

In a new commentary track (via Bloody Disgusting) on the film’s new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release, Wingard and Barrett detailed the sequel and explained why they’re glad they never made it.

“Originally, [the Lamb Mask killer] got decapitated in the script with his hand pinned to his head,” Barrett said. “But then we were like, ‘Ah, perfect opportunity, because this film’s gonna be a huge theatrical success, everyone’s telling us, so for You’re Next 2 we’ll just bring [L.C. Holt] back as the Lamb Mask killer.

Just like the kaiju themselves, Legendary's Monsterverse continues to grow, and the next film in the franchise just landed one of 2025's hottest stars. The next movie in the series, a sequel to 2024'sGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is currently slated for release in 2027. Not much is known about the film so far, aside from a few casting details. In a new exciting bit of news, a report from Deadline has revealed that Dan Stevens is currently in talks to reprise his role as Monarch veterinarian Trapper in the next Monsterverse film. Stevens first played Trapper in the 2024 film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, in a supporting role alongside Rebecca Hall (as Monarch scientist Ilene Andres) and Brian Tyree Henry. Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, was originally set to return, but ultimately departed the project under "amicable" circumstances, with Grant Sputore stepping in to replace him shortly after.

Now, Deadline reports that the next MonsterVerse movie has founds its lead in Kaitlyn Dever.

MaXXXine actress and acclaimed singer/songwriter, Halsey, is adding screenwriter to her resume — and she's re-teaming with the director of the aforementioned film, Ti West, to turn it all into a television show. The series, currently titled "Bloodlust" is already under development at Amazon Prime Video, and is amassing quite a team of creative collaborators.

In an exclusive report from Variety, Halsey will serve as the series' creator, writer, and executive producer. There's been speculation regarding a live-action movie version of the classic '80s cartoon series, Thundercats for a long time now. Excitement reached fever-pitch in March, when Deadline reported that Godzilla vs. Kong director, Adam Wingard, is onboard to helm the movie, and will rewrite the script with Simon Barrett. The idea is to take the concept from the awesome 1985 animated series, and turn it into a hybrid of CGI, and animation.

A recent update reaffirms that Face/Off 2 is still in the works, and that both original actors are also set to return.

A sequel to the 1997 action hit Face/Off has been in the works for several years now, but things never seem to have progressed much further than that, not least because the project’s director, Adam Wingard is so busy.

Until recently, Wingard had a Godzilla x Kong trilogy to juggle, along with Onslaught, a Thundercats adaptation, another project called Hardcore and the sequel to Face/Off on his slate. As we tend to see with filmmakers with such packed schedules, something always gets lost in the shuffle and so the possibility of Face/Off 2 ever coming to fruition never felt like a sure thing.

MonsterVerse is one of the most interesting cinematic universes out of all of them. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures-owned franchise has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide and also consists of TV shows on different streaming services but the way it all came together is a bit iffy because of the rights issues and the general laziness that we see in the some of the MonsterVerse films, but still Godzilla vs. Kong is still one of the most iconic movies for me. The cast of A24’s gonzo actioner Onslaught from The Guest director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett is only continues to heat up. THR reports that The Terminator and Aliens star Michael Biehn is set to make his return to studio films with the gonzo actioner.

Reginald VelJohnson, remembered for his role in action classic Die Hard, and comedian Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric) have also joined the cast.

The actors join previously announced cast members Drew Starkey, Dan Stevens, Blink Twice star Adria Arjona, and UFC Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira, who is still in talks.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Onslaught is being described as “a gonzo action horror thriller.” Michael Biehn will play a leader of an elite group of mercenaries who try to reign in the threat. VelJohnson is playing a member of the mother’s trailer park community as is Wareheim.

Dan Stevens, who memorably starred in Adam Wingard’s thriller The Guest, is reuniting with the filmmaker for his newest action thriller, Onslaught.

Adria Arjona is starring in the feature which is being made by A24 as well as Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Shooting begins November in New Mexico.

The feature is already a reteaming of the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two wrote the cult hits You’re Next and Guest. The latter was a key Hollywood step for Stevens, who at that point was known mainly for his work in the popular British series Downton Abbey.

After bowing theatrically in September, E.L. Katz's religious horror movie Azrael is poised to join Shudder on October 25, 2024. A perfect Halloween watch, the film stars Samara Weaving as Azrael, a woman who escapes captivity from a pious cult of wicked worshipers and is systematically stalked by the members for a ritual sacrifice. Of course, beyond the protagonist's namesake, the movie title has an angelic/demonic connotation that bears further scrutiny.

In addition to parsing the mythological meaning of the movie's title, it's worth explaining how the twisted plot plays into biblical lore and reinforces the eternal struggle between good and evil. Far from only the protagonist's moniker, Azrael has a religious historical subtext that dovetails into the devious horror story.
