Nicolas Cage Almost Skipped Face/Off—Until John Woo’s Bold Pitch Made It an Action Classic (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
Nicolas Cage didn’t exactly leap at Face/Off when it first crossed his table. In fact, he politely declined. However, leave it to director John Woo to flip the script. Woo cleverly pitched the film to Cage as a cerebral mind-bender, not the bullet-fueled, identity-swapping spectacle it truly was. And the result was that Cage signed on, and the rest is history. The 1997 cult hit went on to score 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, pulled in box office glory, and landed Cage and John Travolta in what many fans still call their best roles. But that road to casting was nothing sort of a wild ride!
This is How Nicolas Cage Tricked Into Iconic Role in Face/Off
Before it became a late-’90s action masterpiece, Face/Off was pitched with a totally different lineup in mind.

Back in college, my Saturday nights were a little less boring after one generous internet installer hooked me up with “complimentary” cable. Mind you, I didn’t ask for this surprise add-on, but I also didn’t let it go to waste. Anyhow, I soon became very acquainted with those Original Movies found on Syfy (née the Sci-Fi Channel or simply Sci Fi).
It was as if the powers that be had come together and made an evening of entertainment that catered to my horror tastes — carnage, schlock, and most of all, monsters. And every so often, that block of niche, unapologetic programming offered an Original that wasn’t quite like the others. Yes, the most dangerous night on television occasionally delivered an enjoyable B-movie like Frankenfish. Even to this day I rewatch it with sincere fondness and pleasure, as opposed to the sense of irony required for other Syfy flicks.

The juxtaposition of the horror and Western genres is an unusual one, for sure. But there’s something rather enjoyable about seeing the two seemingly opposed genres skillfully fused. Organ Trail and Bone Tomahawk are just a couple of examples of the kind of magic that stems from the effective use of this unholy union. We recently noticed that a forgotten horror Western is streaming on Prime Video and that’s the kind of good news we cannot keep to ourselves. The film we’re referencing is Alex Turner’s Dead Birds.
Dead Birds didn’t make a huge splash upon release and still remains somewhat under-seen more than 20 years later. The film does, however, have a small cult following and even managed to win over a few critics. Perhaps some of the appeal comes from the creatives involved. You’re Next scribe Simon Barrett penned the script for this genre mashup.

Legendary's Monsterverse just keeps getting bigger and bigger with each passing movie. Not just in terms of the Titans they add, but with the cast members that join the franchise – the names of which are almost as big as the beasts themselves. Now, another iconic star has joined the new Godzilla x Kong sequel that's currently in the works by director Grant Sputore, which is expected to begin filming in Australia next month.
Per Deadline, Matthew Modine is the newest cast member added to the mix, alongside the already announced Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell and Delroy Lindo. Dan Stevens will also be returning as the monster veterinarian and dentist Trapper, and while Modine's role has yet to be disclosed, word has it he'll be playing a general in the latest Monsterverse film, which is being written by David Callaham. When V/H/S/2 hit screens in 2013, it emerged as a bold sequel to the original V/H/S, offering another dose of found-footage horror anthology goodness. Like its predecessor, V/H/S/2 thrives on its unique structure: a collection of shorts tied together by an overarching narrative, each directed by some of the most inventive voices in modern horror. With its mix of supernatural scares, visceral gore, and relentless tension, the film aimed to up the ante from the first installment. But does every segment deliver? Let’s revisit V/H/S/2, dissect its stories, and determine which segments truly shine and which fall short.
Before we dive into the segments, let’s discuss a little backstory. The first film achieved success both critically and financially. So naturally there was demand for a sequel. Similar to it’s predecessor, V/H/S/2 is an anthology film. Multiple directors were brought on board to create standalone short films. The shorts...

Before Adam Wingard joined Legendary's Monsterverse to helm Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, he directed what is arguably one of the greatest slasher films of the 2010s: You're Next. Written by Simon Barrett, the film focuses on an estranged family who find themselves under attack by a group of masked assailants during a family reunion. It's a familiar premise, but one Wingard and Barrett handled with a deft hand that's filled with black humor and gory kills. Now, the pair are discussing the sequel they had planned, which they're glad they never made.
The chat between the two comes during a new commentary track on You're Next, which was released yesterday on SteelBook 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray exclusively from Lionsgate Limited (via Bloody Disgusting). The film saw its killers decked out in a lamb, a fox, and a tiger mask, and while Lamb Mask (L.

You’re Next put a delightfully bloody spin on the home invasion genre, earning the film a passionate cult following that has only grown since its release in 2011. Although the ending of You’re Next did leave the door open for a sequel, a follow-up never materialized. However, that doesn’t mean that director Adam Wingard and writer Simon Barrett didn’t consider it.
In a new commentary track (via Bloody Disgusting) on the film’s new 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release, Wingard and Barrett detailed the sequel and explained why they’re glad they never made it.
“Originally, [the Lamb Mask killer] got decapitated in the script with his hand pinned to his head,” Barrett said. “But then we were like, ‘Ah, perfect opportunity, because this film’s gonna be a huge theatrical success, everyone’s telling us, so for You’re Next 2 we’ll just bring [L.C. Holt] back as the Lamb Mask killer.

“But because his frontal cortex is damaged by getting stabbed in the forehead, he won’t be able to feel pain anymore. He’ll be kind of crazier now, and he wants revenge for his brother.”
He continues, “Our sequel idea, which I’m glad we didn’t do, was the notion that Erin would be arrested.

Just like the kaiju themselves, Legendary's Monsterverse continues to grow, and the next film in the franchise just landed one of 2025's hottest stars. The next movie in the series, a sequel to 2024'sGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, is currently slated for release in 2027. Not much is known about the film so far, aside from a few casting details. Kaitlyn Dever (who also stars in Season 2 of The Last of Us) is set to star in the new film, with Dan Stevens also reprising his role as Traper Beasley from the last entry in the franchise.
Per Deadline, Jack O'Connell has now also joined the cast of the next Monsterverse movie. O'Connell is arguably one of the most underappreciated actors working today, having delivered phenomenal performances in UK dramas like Skins and This Is England, as well as the Netflix original western, Godless. In a new exciting bit of news, a report from Deadline has revealed that Dan Stevens is currently in talks to reprise his role as Monarch veterinarian Trapper in the next Monsterverse film. Stevens first played Trapper in the 2024 film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, in a supporting role alongside Rebecca Hall (as Monarch scientist Ilene Andres) and Brian Tyree Henry. Despite Stevens' limited screen time, Trapper stood out as one of the more entertaining human characters in the movie, stealing some of the most fun scenes in the film and nailing his interactions with the larger-than-life monsters, known as titans.
Besides the potential return of Stevens' character, the Godzilla x Kong sequel also recently cast Kaitlyn Dever in the film, though the full nature of her role remains to be seen. Whatever the case, things seem to be moving forward fairly quickly for the sequel, with Grant Sputore...

Director Adam Wingard and actress Rebecca Hall worked together on both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – but after making two giant monster movies in a row, Wingard decided he wanted to return to his roots with Onslaught, a project that is said to be in the vein of his cult classics The Guest and You’re Next. It has also been described as a “gonzo action horror thriller.” So the next Godzilla / Kong sequel is moving ahead without him… but that hasn’t disrupted his working relationship with Hall. The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Hall is part of the Onslaught cast!

We got confirmation late last year that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, was originally set to return, but ultimately departed the project under "amicable" circumstances, with Grant Sputore stepping in to replace him shortly after.
Now, Deadline reports that the next MonsterVerse movie has founds its lead in Kaitlyn Dever.
We don't have any details on who she'll play, but the trade mentions that, while Kong and Godzilla will still be fronting the film, Legendary is looking to build on its human characters. The story will focus on "Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat."

A polarizing MonsterVerse installment has been one of the most-watched movies on Netflix since Christmas Day. Earlier this year, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debuted to mixed critical reviews but was financially successful, becoming the highest-grossing MonsterVerse film to date.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is currently third on Netflix's Top 10 chart, only behind Carry-On and Kerry Washington's The Six Triple Eight. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film is a direct sequel to 2021's Godzilla x Kong and is the fifth film in the shared Monsterverse franchise. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kong encounters more of his species in the Hollow Earth and must again ally with Godzilla to stop the tyrannical Skar King and the powerful, frost-breathing Shimo from invading the Earth's surface. Some people can just do it all, can't they? MaXXXine actress and acclaimed singer/songwriter, Halsey, is adding screenwriter to her resume — and she's re-teaming with the director of the aforementioned film, Ti West, to turn it all into a television show. The series, currently titled "Bloodlust" is already under development at Amazon Prime Video, and is amassing quite a team of creative collaborators.
In an exclusive report from Variety, Halsey will serve as the series' creator, writer, and executive producer. The series will be showrun by executive producer Mark Friedman, who's previously worked on Severence, Wayward Pines, and Dispatches from Elsewhere, in addition to recent work on Dune: Prophecy (in a consulting producer capacity). Halsey's manager, Anthony Li, will also executive produce the show.
Though details are mostly under wraps at the moment, it feels safe to assume that the dark comedy will have some interesting, and perhaps horrific,...

There's been speculation regarding a live-action movie version of the classic '80s cartoon series, Thundercats for a long time now. Excitement reached fever-pitch in March, when Deadline reported that Godzilla vs. Kong director, Adam Wingard, is onboard to helm the movie, and will rewrite the script with Simon Barrett. The idea is to take the concept from the awesome 1985 animated series, and turn it into a hybrid of CGI, and animation.
If the project does indeed go ahead, it could be a visually stunning experience, as the animated series not only had great characters like Lion-o, Cheetara, and Panthro, but it also featured many sequences that would look incredible in a live-action movie. The series' fantastical location, plus its wonderful array of heroes, and villains, would look great in a movie version, and the filmmakers would be spoiled for choice when it comes to reimagining some of the most exciting sequences,...

A recent update reaffirms that Face/Off 2 is still in the works, and that both original actors are also set to return.
A sequel to the 1997 action hit Face/Off has been in the works for several years now, but things never seem to have progressed much further than that, not least because the project’s director, Adam Wingard is so busy.
Until recently, Wingard had a Godzilla x Kong trilogy to juggle, along with Onslaught, a Thundercats adaptation, another project called Hardcore and the sequel to Face/Off on his slate. As we tend to see with filmmakers with such packed schedules, something always gets lost in the shuffle and so the possibility of Face/Off 2 ever coming to fruition never felt like a sure thing.
Since Wingard stepped away from helming the third Godzilla x Kong film, and with Onslaught currently filming, the director’s upcoming slate looks noticeably lighter,...

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the 1999 hit The Blair Witch Project (watch it Here) and to mark the occasion, Lionsgate announced that they’re developing a reimagining of the film with Blumhouse Productions. Lionsgate and Blumhouse have made a multi-picture pact that will see Blumhouse producing new takes on horror classics from the Lionsgate library, and The Blair Witch Project is the first project on that slate. That announcement was made several months ago, and now, during a conversation with Film Stories, Blair Witch creators Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick let it be known that no one at Lionsgate or Blumhouse has consulted them about the reimagining.
Sanchez and Myrick had their own ideas for how to expand the world of The Blair Witch Project, but Joe Berlinger’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was made without their participation. They later spent years trying...

The Blair Witch Project is primarily known for changing the face of horror 25 years ago and also setting a new standard for the possibilities of independent filmmaking. The movie was a huge success, grossing $250 million worldwide on a very slim $750,000 budget, and went on to launch a media franchise of sequels, comic books, novels, and video games. On the flip side of that success have been stories about the actors in the film not being fairly compensated over the years, despite the success of the film, and the original creators essentially being shut out of future sequel plans. That has continued to be the case for filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who created the indie film sensation but were not consulted for the upcoming sequel coming from Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions.

Both director and star behind the critically acclaimed cult action thriller The Guest are all set to reunite for more explosive thrills, as Dan Stevens hops aboard Onslaught from filmmaker Adam Wingard. The project remains highly secretive at present, though sources have described Onslaught as a gonzo action horror thriller. Which is pretty much the perfect combination of words.
What we do know about Onslaught (thanks to THR) is that Morbius and Hit Man star Adria Arjona will lead the action outing as a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills in order to protect her loved ones after she runs afoul of a threat that has escaped a secret military base. Which can surely only mean that Onslaught is essentially an assassin versus monster picture. Which, again, is surely the perfect combination of words.

“Studios are not your friends,” says Daniel Myrick, co-director of the original Blair Witch Project, on not being consulted about the upcoming sequel.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project – arguably one of the most pivotal horror films of the 1990s. Making almost $250m in 1999 on its initial cinema run, the found-footage chiller sparked a franchise that is still going a quarter of a century later.
For the first film’s directors, Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, the anniversary brings with it mixed feelings. They’ve barely been involved in the series they helped create all those years ago – and it’s a trend that continues into the upcoming sequel, produced by rights holders Lionsgate in partnership with Blumhouse Productions. We heard earlier this year that, when the next Blair Witch was announced, the makers of the first film – such as production designer Ben Rock – were left blindsided by the revelation.

Dan Stevens, who memorably starred in Adam Wingard’s thriller The Guest, is reuniting with the filmmaker for his newest action thriller, Onslaught.
Adria Arjona is starring in the feature which is being made by A24 as well as Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Shooting begins November in New Mexico.
The feature is already a reteaming of the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two wrote the cult hits You’re Next and Guest. The latter was a key Hollywood step for Stevens, who at that point was known mainly for his work in the popular British series Downton Abbey.
Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller.

After bowing theatrically in September, E.L. Katz's religious horror movie Azrael is poised to join Shudder on October 25, 2024. A perfect Halloween watch, the film stars Samara Weaving as Azrael, a woman who escapes captivity from a pious cult of wicked worshipers and is systematically stalked by the members for a ritual sacrifice. Of course, beyond the protagonist's namesake, the movie title has an angelic/demonic connotation that bears further scrutiny.
In addition to parsing the mythological meaning of the movie's title, it's worth explaining how the twisted plot plays into biblical lore and reinforces the eternal struggle between good and evil. Far from only the protagonist's moniker, Azrael has a religious historical subtext that dovetails into the devious horror story.

Adam Wingard has found his bad guy.
UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira is in talks to make his acting debut opposite Adria Arjona in Onslaught, Wingard’s action thriller set up at A24, Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.
The feature reteams the Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire filmmaker with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The two made the cult hits You’re Next and The Guest and are writing this new feature together.
Many details for Onslaught are being kept in an underground experimental facility, but sources describe it as a gonzo action horror thriller. The scope is said to more in line with Wingard’s earlier movies, which were all original creations, before he went off and made the big-budget spectacle hits Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong.
According to sources, Arjona will play a mother who falls back on a particular set of skills...
