Mix in a dash of Mike Leigh and a sprinkling of Hitchcock suspense and you have an approximation of the atmosphere of this odd couple tale from Paul Andrew Williams who previously gave us the noir drama London To Brighton and revenge thriller Bull.
It starts off amiably enough by describing the mundane existence of 80-year-old Elsie (Brenda Blethyn almost unrecognisable from her Vera persona) and her neighbour Colleen (Birdman’s Andrea Riseborough) who offers to help after social services fall far short.
Both women share a common bond in that they have been consigned to the fringes of society yet seem to rub along - Elsie doesn’t like to make fuss, while Colleen’s precise motives remain unclear although it’s doubtful if she is purely altruistic in her intentions.
The performances of double Oscar-nominated Blethyn and Riseborough provide hypnotic accounts of their characters as two vulnerable souls...

Brendan Canty’s Christy won the best Irish film prize at the Galway Film Fleadh, as the 37th edition of the Irish festival drew to a close yesterday (July 13).
Christy is based on Canty’s short film of the same name and follows a 17-year-old after he’s thrown out of his suburban foster home and moves in with his estranged older half-brother in Cork.
Danny Power, Emma Willis and Chris Walley star in the UK-Ireland co-production between Marina Brackenbury and Wayward Films’ Meredith Duff, with Rory Gilmartin of London and Dublin-based Sleeper Films.

All six of Connery’s ‘official’ 007 films will be screened in 4K restorations, with big names including Andrea Riseborough, Peter Dinklage and Renée Zellweger also on show
Andrea Riseborough, Peter Dinklage, Renée Zellweger and – inevitably – the late Sean Connery will be among the big names on show at the Edinburgh international film festival, which announced its programme today.
A clutch of world premieres at the festival includes a remake of trash classic The Toxic Avenger, starring Dinklage alongside Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood and Julia Davis, while Riseborough appears opposite Brenda Blethyn in Paul Andrew Williams’s Tribeca festival hit Dragonfly. Zellweger appears in a behind-the-scenes role, with the world premiere of her directorial debut, an animated short film called They. And in what appears something of a coup, the festival will screen 4K restorations of Connery’s six “official” James Bond films: Dr No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball,...

Daisy Ridley will always be known for her role as Rey Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but earlier this year, she starred in an action thriller likened to John Wick upon its release, which has been a sensation on streaming. Ridley stars alongside Taz Skylar and Ruth Gemmell in Cleaner, the action vehicle following an ex-soldier-turned-window-cleaner who has to rescue hostages after a gala is hijacked and its attendees fall into major trouble. Cleaner began streaming on Max at the end of last week, and the film wasted no time climbing to the top of streaming charts, sitting at #1 at the time of writing. Cleaner earned a “rotten” 52% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but a slightly kinder 66% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

A challenging film to both review and market without spoiling, Paul Andrew Williams’ Dragonfly largely succeeds because it never quite telegraphs where it’s going until its third act. My thoughts are with the distributor that eventually picks up this film and has to decide what kind of trailer to cut for a work that largely spends its runtime as a straightforward social-realist story centered on the loneliness of neighbors. Those familiar with the output of writer-director Williams (including Bull and London to Brighton) will know better than to expect a traditional drama about working-class England in the vein of contemporary Mike Leigh and Ken Loach––even if Williams certainly can pull it off as well as those masters for his first half.
Of course, excellent casting helps, and Dragonfly works well because of the sympathetic performance of its leads, including the great Brenda Blethyn (perhaps best-known stateside for her...

Paul Andrew Williams’s feature debut was called London to Brighton (2006), but the British director has never been much interested in capital cities. His latest, Dragonfly, is another example of this, being a dark, low-key drama about the ways in which the unnoticed lives of suburban people can make surprising headlines. In a direct way, it’s a sister piece to his provocative 2010 home invasion film Cherry Tree Lane, in which—pre-empting Adolescence—a middle-class couple’s humdrum live is turned upside down when they are inexplicably attacked by violent teenage rebels without any apparent cause.
In reality, though—and despite the blood spilt both onscreen and off—it turns out to be more like the film Williams made in 2012. Called Song for Marion, it starred Terence Stamp as an emotionally shut-down widower who joins a choir to pay homage to his late wife (Vanessa Redgrave). It wasn’t a commercial success,...

Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough, along with a very alarming dog, are superb as two neighbours thrown together by their neglected circumstances
Twenty years ago, Paul Andrew Williams announced himself as a smart new British talent with his ferocious gangland picture London to Brighton, and his creativity has continued in film and TV ever since. His new film is a haunted, social-realist drama with elements of Mike Leigh but also moments of thriller and even horror. Williams isn’t shy of stabbing us with an old-fashioned jump scare towards the end, which in fact challenges the audiences with its refusal of categorisation. There are two superb lead performances from Andrea Riseborough and Brenda Blethyn and an outstanding supporting turn from Jason Watkins.
Dragonfly is about loneliness and alienation and about the eternal mystery of other people, the fear of intimacy and the unknowable existence of urban neighbours.

Adolescence was all the rage when it was released a few months back. From writing and directing to the cinematography and performances, every aspect of the show was highly praised by critics, bringing its Rotten Tomatoes score to 99%. The British crime drama stars Stephen Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is a suspect in a murder case.
Critics sang loud praises about Stephen Graham’s performance in Adolescence, and he even won a Gotham TV Award in the category, Outstanding Lead Performance in a Limited Series. Clearly, if you haven’t gotten around to watching the show yet, you need to add it to your watchlist Asap. But before you do that, there is another Stephen Graham show that needs your attention.

The upcoming Josh O’Connor film “Rebuilding” will screen as part of the 2025 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival along with multiple world premieres, Kviff organizers announced on Tuesday.
The festival announced 11 films in its Crystal Globe competition section, but added that the section will include a 12th film from Iran. Artistic director Karel Och said in a release that the announcement of this final feature has been postponed until closer to the festival out of consideration for “the safety of its makers.”
“Rebuilding,” which makes its international premiere at the festival, immerses us in the life of a rancher (O’Connor) whose ranch has been destroyed in a wildfire and must now pick up the pieces in his life. It’s written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman, who previously made his feature debut with the delicate drama “A Love Song” in 2022. “Rebuilding” previously premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival...

Certain cinematic elements automatically pique my interest in a film. When it comes to Cleaner, the starring role of Daisy Ridley (Star Wars Sequel Trilogy), the direction of Martin Campbell, and a Die Hard-style premise all meet – if not exceed – the minimum requirements to get me to the big screen or, in this case, the comfort of my couch. However, these elements alone don’t mean expectations can’t be adjusted realistically.
Looking at the official synopsis of Cleaner, I expected nothing more, nothing less than a generic variation of the successful formula established by the aforementioned classic. Ridley plays Joey, a former soldier turned window cleaner who finds herself suspended 50 stories high on the exterior of a skyscraper after a group of radical activists takes control of an energy company’s annual gala. With 300 hostages and a terrorist infiltrator among the activists, Joey is forced to save the innocent...

British director Paul Andrew Williams’ next film is psychological thriller The Nest, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Andrea Riseborough.
Paul Andrew Williams is synonymous with gritty, low budget British filmmaking. Bursting onto the scene in 2006 with London to Brighton, he quickly built up an impressive filmography including showcasing the glorious double act of Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith in horror comedy The Cottage, home invasion horror Cherry Tree Lane and a change of direction with sweet musical comedy Song For Marion, which starred Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave. Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. Discovery before being spun out as an independent company, Particular Crowd has achieved success in recent months with the releases of “La Extorsión” and “Casi Muerta.” Both films secured top positions at the box office for local titles and performed well on Max, where Particular Crowd’s movies are exclusively available locally under a volume deal the company has with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Upcoming Particular Crowd projects include Brazil’s “Evidências Do Amor,” which will be released theatrically this month by Warner Bros. and “Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires,” an original Warner Bros. Animation feature that places the DC superhero against the backdrop of Mexico’s history.

While Christmas tends to be the default setting for winter horror, 2008’s The Children makes a good argument for terror around the New Year. Many folks would expect leisure and fun after a busy Christmas. However, the chance for relaxation is out of the question in Tom Shankland’s movie. Something terrible has suddenly happened to the kids, and something even worse awaits their parents.
Spending New Year’s Eve with the ‘rents and their relatives is undesirable for most teenagers, but Casey (Hannah Tointon) will have definitely wished for more boring family time after her younger siblings and cousins turn on her and every other grownup nearby. No one past the age of puberty is safe here. As Casey and her closest kin gather at a remote house in the country — a decision that always proves to be as unwise as it is clichéd — The Children steadily reveals its unusual threat.

Fittingly for a series in which everybody seems to be engaging in some form of Classic Hollywood cosplay, the Rosebud moment in BritBox’s Archie is delivered by an actor playing comedy icon Danny Kaye.
Affecting a stereotypical German therapist accent — accents on top of accents on top of accents is the Archie way — Kaye cautions young Dyan Cannon (Laura Aikman) that her relationship with the more seasoned Cary Grant (Jason Isaacs) is destined for complications with the warning, “Men who have difficult relationships with their mothers always carry it over to the women that they love.”
There’s no reason for Kaye to make such an observation if he hasn’t been watching the two previous hours of Jeff Pope’s four-episode production. But for the series’ actual audience, his analysis will come across as both obvious and superficial — a bit like Archie itself.
Ultimately, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

There is something of In Bruges about this Belgium-set tale of whistleblowers in hiding, with a little bit of David Brent
Neil Maskell is the charismatic British actor known for his complex, seriocomic tough-guy performances in the movies of Ben Wheatley and Paul Andrew Williams; now he makes a worthwhile feature debut as writer-director in this diverting if slightly lightweight black-comic sketch about political paranoia, on which Wheatley has an executive producer credit.
Amit Shah and Sura Dohnke play Ewan and Silke, a married couple who are whistleblowers hiding out in Belgium, having revealed a government secret to a newspaper.

Kill List star Neil Maskell delivers an astounding performance in the 2021 low budget movie Bull, which has been a smash hit on streaming since Netflix acquired it. The bloody crime thriller, directed by Paul Andrew Williams, follows Maskell’s vicious enforcer as he returns to his old stomping ground ten years after some deadly and mysterious events have transpired between him and his fellow gang members.
The gang, headed up by Bull’s horrible father-in-law, Norm (David Hayman), are still kicking around – but not for long. Bull is determined to mete out vengeance upon those who he believes double-crossed him, but they can’t quite believe he’s even there, as they seem certain it’s impossible.

Yesterday, we shared the news that 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland say they have been having “serious talks” about finally making a sequel that would be called 28 Years Later… and in a new interview with Collider, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy has said that he’d gladly be in a sequel if it’s made by Boyle and Garland!
Murphy, who is currently doing the press rounds for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (where he plays the title character), had this to say about a 28 Days Later sequel: “I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, ‘Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.’ So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it,...

Fans of 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting sixteen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie called 28 Months Later. Way back in 2009, we heard that Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage) was on board to direct the film… but that didn’t go anywhere. Since then, every once in a while, we hear 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland mention 28 Months Later, say there was a great idea for the sequel, then later say it might never happen. In an interview last year, Boyle said Garland had already written the script, and this might be the time to make it into a movie. Now the collaborators have confirmed to Inverse that they’re having serious talks about the sequel, which may turn out to be called 28 Years Later.

Tom Shankland's kinderhorror meanie "The Children" isn't an actual reason to avoid childbirth. That's a joke. Doubly dreary around the holidays since a majority of Xmas traditions point towards making youngins happy.

Jeff’s brilliant scripts bring to life his relentless struggle to escape the demons that plagued him, his obsessive need for control, his fears, his weaknesses, his loves and his losses.

All the Old Knives (Janus Metz Pedersen)
All the Old Knives wants you to sweat and swoon in equal measure. Playing in the same tried and true sandbox as some of the great espionage thrillers before it, director Janus Metz Pedersen’s adaptation of Olen Steinhaur’s 2015 novel traffics in all necessary trappings of its genre. Between the clandestine correspondence and popped peacoat collars against wet European streets, it’s certainly not shy about cinematic crushes. This infatuation is wholly appropriate, because––chilly demeanor notwithstanding––All the Old Knives is a burning romantic at heart. – Conor O. (full review)
Where to Stream: Amazon Prime
