In a way, Poorna Jagannathan has Geena Davis to thank for her new role on Deli Boys. As she revealed to Gold Derby, the show's creator, Abdullah Saeed, was attending the Academy's Governors Award ceremony when Davis was presented her Honorary Oscar. Davis encouraged those in attendance to "go home, look at your scripts," and "make sure you can turn whoever you can from male to female," Jagannathan says. Saeed took Davis's advice, swapping the gender of a key supporting character in the pilot script for Deli Boys, and that role just won Jagannathan a Gotham Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Comedy Series.

Poorna Jagannathan went from playing a beloved mother on Never Have I Ever to being a terrifying mob boss on the hit Hulu comedy Deli Boys. And while there are plenty of strong and terrifying women that Jagannathan could have found inspiration from with the character of Lucky, she ended up looking to an unlikely source to find the character: Bravo. The reality television network is home to many shows, including The Real Housewives franchise. Which is where Jagannathan turned to discover what kind of mob boss Lucky was.
In an exclusive to People, Jagannathan said that she tried to watch things like The Sopranos, which had James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano, and documentaries on crime families, but what she found the most helpful was The Real Housewives of Orange County. She did not say if there was a specific housewife that she watched or modeled her character after. However,...

There is a moment, unscripted, in Hulu’s “Deli Boys,” in which Poorna Jagannathan and Tan France start cursing at each other in Urdu.
The two are close friends (and old friends), but France’s acting debut in the absurd comedy series put him through the ringer, until the duo were improvising the most vile things they could say to each other. There’s kutti (bitch), haramzaade (bastard), bhenchod (sister fucker) — all flowing through a meticulously choreographed group fight taking place in a hotel room.
“It really made us think, when we’re at our most primal, these two characters, we go to the place that we are most familiar with where you just speak your own language,” Jagannathan told IndieWire during a recent interview.

Poorna Jagannathan plays crime boss Lucky Auntie in the Hulu comedy series Deli Boys — a mix of Tony Soprano and The Real Housewives of Orange County, as Jagannathan describes her — a role that typically is written for a male to portray.
At Deadline’s Contenders TV event on Sunday afternoon, she revealed that series creator Abdullah Saeed had written her character as a male but was encouraged to go in a different direction thanks to some encouragement from Geena Davis.
“Lucky Auntie was written as a guy, as was another character called Agent Mercer,” shared Jagannathan. “Abdullah, the writer, went to a Geena Davis talk, and she basically was like, ‘Look at your script — if you could turn two men into women and it works, do it.’ So that night, he went back, and it became Lucky Auntie instead of Lucky Uncle, and Agent Mercer became a woman as well.

In a television landscape saturated with South Asian tropes — think: dutiful doctor, tech nerd, spiritual guru, bearded terrorist — Hulu’s Deli Boys arrives like a shot of spice-infused adrenaline. The Philadelphia-set series plunges viewers into the chaotic world of two pampered Pakistani American brothers who inherit their late father’s, shall we say, multifaceted business: a corner deli empire that is also a helpful front for a far-reaching criminal enterprise.

The cast of Lanterns continues to expand as The InSneider brings word today that Jason Ritter (Matlock) has joined the upcoming DC Studios series.
He'll reportedly play the husband of Kelly Macdonald's character; she's been cast as Sheriff Kerry, a character described as "a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface."
There had been rumblings about Kerry being a love interest for Hal Jordan, though this news may go some way in debunking that.
Ritter is best known for his Emmy-nominated role in Parenthood. He also counts Gravity Falls, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, and Frozen II among his film and television credits.

It seems we can expect to see the Guardians of the Universe and (possibly) the Sinestro Corps in the upcoming Dcu Lanterns series.
While being interviewed about her new series, Deli Boys, Poorna Jagannathan spoke about what excites her most about the show, and in her enthusiasm, may have given away a little more than she realized.
"I couldn't have loved the writing for Green Lantern more. Like Deli Boys, the Green Lantern series is extraordinarily well written and my character is extraordinarily well-built. And also, the way I can describe all the characters. We have all the characters we know and love... the Lanterns, the Guardians, Sinestros, and that world is still intact and everyone is presented as heroes and villains at the same time. And that's what makes the writing so complex, layered and so wonderful."

‘Lanterns’ is easily one of the most exciting projects for fans to look forward to in Dcu’s Chapter 1. Initially, many were surprised by its description as a grounded, Earth-bound adventure in the vein of True Detective and Slow Horses, but the anticipation has been steadily growing.
The show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two of the most popular Green Lanterns out there. We can also presumably expect Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner to make an appearance considering we’ve already seen him in the role in ‘Superman’ set leaks and trailer.

When “Deli Boys” first started production, star Saagar Shaikh expected the Hulu series — which follows two pampered brothers who take the reins of their dad’s empire of drug-front convenience stores — to feel akin to darker fare like “Breaking Bad” or “Succession.” Instead, the Onyx Collective series dialed up the laughs, blending genres to lock into its distinct tone.
“There is so much heart to the show. There’s so much drama to it, but all of it is seasoned with comedy all over the place,” Shaikh, who stars in “Deli Boys” alongside Asif Ali and Poorna Jagannathan, told TheWrap for our latest digital cover.
“We started off as ‘Succession,’ and then we ended up as ‘Three Stooges,'” Jagannathan added, noting “for context” that creator Abdullah Saeed was behind a series called “Bong Appétit,” where he hosted extravagant cannabis-infused meals. “I’ve never been given a carte blanche on this level of physical comedy,...

Millennials of a certain vintage may know “Deli Boys” creator Abdullah Saeed from his cannabis-related content for Vice, including shows like “Weediquette” and “Bong Appetit.” With his new Hulu sitcom, Saeed has both made the switch to scripted series and upgraded to harder stuff. The namesake protagonists of “Deli Boys,” two spoiled rich kids who suddenly lose their father, are stunned to learn their family legacy isn’t actually a regional chain of Delaware Valley convenience stores: It’s the cocaine smuggling ring for which the delis were just a distribution front.
A crime comedy with a heavy skew toward the comedy, “Deli Boys” sets its unserious tone with the slapstick demise of patriarch Baba Dar (Iqbal Theba), who gushes blood after taking a golf ball to the head as his slack-jawed failsons Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh) look on in horror. DC Studios' live-action Lanterns series will be heading to HBO in 2026. As the cast prepares to begin production, actor Poorna Jagannathan shared some details about the script.
Without giving away the plot, Jagannathan shared her excitement about the project with Collider. "This is the first script that I've read that I understand why there's an NDA," the actor said. "Everything is so insane. It is the best writing that I have ever read. I don't know anything about sci-fi, and I don't care, actually. But this script makes sci-fi seem like my world. It makes it so accessible to me. I understand everything about this world even though I don't understand this world. So it's the best sci-fi script I've ever read."

Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Zoe in the highly anticipated Lanterns series, recently opened up about the project in an interview with Collider. She praised the script, calling it the best writing she’s ever read, and highlighted its secrecy, saying, ‘This is the first script I’ve read where I completely understand the need for an NDA.’
While Lanterns dives into complex Green Lantern mythology, Jagannathan revealed that it’s written in a way that feels easy to understand, even for those unfamiliar with sci-fi. Production is moving forward quickly, with camera tests already underway.
The show features an impressive cast. Ulrich Thomsen, known for The Blacklist, will portray Sinestro, one of the most iconic DC villains. He joins Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, creating a mix of veteran leadership and fresh energy.

Poorna Jagannathan declares that the teleplay for the upcoming Dcu series Lanterns is “the best sci-fi script” she’s ever read. Production for James Gunn’s highly anticipated DC Universe series “Lanterns” is picking up speed, with the show set to bring a unique approach to superhero storytelling. The series will follow multiple Green Lantern characters as they investigate an intergalactic mystery, breaking away from traditional superhero narratives.
Actress Poorna Jagannathan recently shared her excitement about the project during an interview with Collider. Despite having limited experience with science fiction, she praised the script’s exceptional quality. “This is the first script that I’ve read that I understand why there’s an NDA,” Jagannathan said. “Everything is so insane – it’s the best writing I have ever read.”
The series will star Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, focusing on the Green Lantern Corps’ role as cosmic law enforcement. This detective-style approach aims to attract both dedicated DC fans and viewers who might typically avoid superhero content.

Last November, Lanterns cast The Night Of and Wolfs star Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, a character described as effortlessly confident and poised in any setting, even those where she stands out.
The insinuation is that she's playing a human, though there's a chance she's playing a member of the Green Lantern Corps, particularly as the character is also "every bit as composed and cunning [as] the influential men around her."
Collider recently caught up with the actor and asked what, if anything, she could share about the highly anticipated DC Studios/Max TV series.

Lanterns has so far assembled a very impressive cast, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre set to lead the series as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. In terms of supporting players, DC Studios has turned to talented stars like Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt.
Now, the upcoming HBO series has added another impressive name, with Poorna Jagannathan (Never Have I Ever) set to play Lanterns' "Zoe."
She doesn't appear to be based on anyone from the comics but is described as effortlessly confident and poised in any setting, even those where she stands out. She is every bit as composed and cunning as the influential men around her.
Interestingly, Zoe is expected to be John's love interest, with Macdonald set to play Hal's love interest, Sheriff Kerry. Dillahunt plays modern cowboy William Macon, though it's possible these are all codenames to cover up who they've really been cast as.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt are finally back on the big screen together in Jon Watts’ crime thriller “Wolfs.” They last worked together 16 years ago in “Burn After Reading” — but it’s not like they didn’t want to reunite.
“We’ve been looking,” Clooney told me at the “Wolfs” Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday. “We’ve been trying to find something to do.”
They first appeared on screen with each other 23 years ago in the “Ocean’s 11” remake. In “Wolfs,” they play two fixers separately tasked to deal with the same crime involving a young man (Austin Abrams), drugs and the Albanian mob.

There aren’t a whole lot of comparisons between Netflix’s teen rom-com “Never Have I Ever” and the HBO drama “Succession”, but the disparate series wrapped their fourth and final seasons within weeks of each other, both sticking the landing.
Finishing a TV show is an inherently gargantuan/intimidating/daunting task, and very few achieve the holy grail of doing so without disappointing or infuriating even a small faction of their fandom. Shorter seasons and scheduled endings are less rare in the streaming age, but still satisfying for the devoted viewer. Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s “Never Have I Ever” concluded with fulfilling emotional arcs for Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) — especially in her tumultuous relationship with mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) — and with a protagonist who evolved palpably in front of the audience.

Warning: This piece contains major spoilers for the final season of “Never Have I Ever.” If you haven’t watched yet, turn back now!
Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” Season 4 opens new chapters for all characters, including Vishwakumar matriarch Nirmala (Ranjita Chakravarty) when she marries her new love Len (Jeff Garlin).
Nirmala’s wedding ceremony provides the last scene where everyone — Devi’s family and friends — come together before the show ends. The scene meant a lot to Poorna Jagannathan, who plays Nalini, Nirmala’s daughter-in-law and Devi’s mother.
“I’m just remembering a lot of people wrapped that day so it was very intense, very emotional. Yeah. The wedding scene is very symbolic of the show. It’s something that happened to Mindy’s dad. Co-creator Mindy Kaling loosely based Never Have I Ever on her childhood, but 15-year-old Devi Vishwakumar's story is mostly fictional.
When season 1 premiered, Devi was dealing with the loss of her beloved father, Mohan, while coping with the social struggles that come with being in high school. Now, a few years later in season 4, Devi and her friends enter their senior year of high school, and fans will finally learn what the future holds for the protagonist. Never Have I Ever season 4 may mark the end of the popular Netflix series, but it serves as a new beginning for Devi Vishwakumar (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her loved ones. Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, the show began with Devi's impossible crush on the hunk of Sherman Oaks High School, Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet), before teasing an enemies-to-lovers romance with classmate Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison).

Four years ago, the pair met on the set of their hit Netflix series - which follows first-generation Indian American high-schooler Devi (played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her quest to navigate friendship, family, and the traumatic loss of her father. The two tell Popsugar that from the moment they first met, it was an almost instant connection between them that has since grown into a dear sisterhood - one that's been built on their shared Indian heritage and experiences coming up in Hollywood.
"I'm much more new to this industry than Poorna is, and I've never had somebody that I could ask questions and learn from. I feel extremely lucky and privileged that I get to learn from her,...

Hosted by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Anjula Acharia, the South Asian Excellence Pre-Oscars Celebration on Thursday on the Paramount Studio lot invited South Asian industry changemakers and honored Oscar nominees of South Asian descent.
As co-host, Chopra Jonas introduced the event by acknowledging that South Asian representation in Hollywood and at the Oscars has “been quite an arduous journey.” She said it would not have been possible without the South Asians who have “fought the stereotypes to ensure that our stories were not just a cliche, those of us who fought for actors to have bigger leading roles. Those of you who fought for stories of South Asian descent to be a norm, to not be an exception, but to be normal.”
Chopra Jonas then shouted out, one of the co-hosts, Mindy Kaling, for her decades of developing their stories with South Asian women at the forefront, including the Netflix series starring Jagannathan and Suri.
