How Hard Is Dale to Watch in the ‘King of the Hill’ Revival?
Image
King of the Hill premiered in January of 1997. In all kinds of ways, that was a different world: before 9/11; before the forever wars in the Middle East; before smartphones; before birtherism; before QAnon; before Covid; before January 6th; before a lot of other world events that became red meat for conspiracy theorists. When viewers first met Dale Gribble (voice of Johnny Hardwick), his anti-government beliefs were so quaint they were easy to laugh at, but many may now be wondering how he plays in Season 14.

The short answer: generally not too unbearable!

The worst of Dale — like the worst of the season — is in the premiere. Hopes that electoral politics might not come up at all are dashed as we learn about Dale’s successful mayoral run, standing out from the 10 other candidates by opposing all masks. If I never have to hear about election deniers as though they espouse a cogent political philosophy,...

Jack McBrayer Roasts Seth Meyers’ Son Every Time They Meet
Image
It’s hard to imagine Kenneth the Page being mean to anyone, but, unlike his most famous character, Jack McBrayer is no angel.

Out of all the mainstay comedic character actors of the 21st century, McBrayer, beloved supporting star of 30 Rock, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the Wreck-It Ralph series, has to have the single most squeaky-clean public image in the business. Now the host of the HGTV reality show Zillow Gone Wild, McBrayer, 52, has maintained the same lovable, folksy, Georgia-born peppiness for his entire career, in spite of the consistent Hollywood workplace abuse that he used to suffer at the hands of Conan O’Brien. However, as McBrayer revealed on last night's episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers, he picked up a few nasty habits from the old Late Night host, and he’s not afraid to use them on unsuspecting children.

Despite McBrayer’s upbeat public persona, everyone...

The HGTV series, returning July 18, sees the 30 Rock star venture throughout the country to visit some of the most extraordinary unique properties. Each episode brings three contenders judged on originality, commitment and wild factor with winners presented with a coveted plaque. McBrayer racks up those frequent flyer miles going from an entire old western town purchased by an adventurous family in Colorado to a real-life Lego castle in Orlando, Florida. Finally, some good news on Late Night with Seth Meyers this week (July 14)
Image
Late Night with Seth Meyers hasn't been heard from in weeks, but there is finally good news on the horizon for the NBC late-night show. Host Seth Meyers will be back behind the desk on Monday night as Late Night ends its hiatus.

Like most late-night shows, Late Night went dark around the end of June. The last new episode came on June 26 before the show closed its doors for an extended break. It left a noticeable void with Meyers' keen insight in the day's headlines.

Look for Meyers to make up for lost time on Monday night. There will be a brand-new episode of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

It's a safe bet to assume "A Closer Look" will be on the schedule for Late Night's return. The only real question is which story Meyers and his staff want to focus on after keeping quiet for two weeks.

The Bonkers Comedy That John Hughes Didn’t Want You to See
Image
A comedy TV show in 2004 that starred — deep breath here — Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, Paul Rudd, Tina Fey, Will Arnett, Michael Ian Black, Rachel Dratch, Ken Marino, Jack McBrayer and Maya Rudolph? And it never saw the light of day? What was VH1 thinking?

The pilot was called Soundtracks Live, based on a stage show created by the Upright Citizens Brigade. “It was a really cool thing where Amy Poehler and Amy Miles ran it,” Fey told Complex in 2013. “It was this thing where they take a movie like Sixteen Candles and act out the movie on a stage and a band would play the soundtrack live and people would sing the song.”

The VH1 pilot was a more or less faithful recreation of the John Hughes teen comedy. “I had a few different parts,” Rudd told Complex. “I sang a song in the end with The Vapors called, ‘Turning Japanese.

Kenneth From 30 Rock Starred In A Short-Lived Adult Swim Show From Conan O'Brien
Image
Jack McBrayer's performance as Kenneth the Page on "30 Rock" is immortal because his indefatigable enthusiasm was the heart of a show that ruthlessly pursued each and every joke it could sink its teeth into.

The performance made Jack McBrayer the go-to man for wholesome, purehearted weirdos on TV, which is why Conan O'Brien thought it would be funny to send him into the meanest, cruelest place on the planet: Chicago's Wiener's Circle, a rough and tumble hole in the wall where employees and customers scream insults and expletives at one another. Poor Jack was no match for their negativity, but luckily he didn't come alone.

Enter: Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and his iconic cigar. Triumph, a rottweiler hand puppet performed by Robert Smigel with a seemingly never ending encyclopedia of insults, Triumph is one of Conan's most famous recurring characters and his journey into the depths of...

Jack McBrayer Makes ‘King of the Hill’ Debut in Latest Revival Preview Clip
Image
During its original run on Fox, King of the Hill provided opportunities for performers from all over the Southern U.S. states: Beth Grant (Alabama); Trace Adkins (Louisiana); Diedrich Bader (Virginia); Mary Kay Place (Oklahoma); Stephen Root and Tom Petty (Florida); Johnny Knoxville and Lane Smith (Tennessee), and of course the contingent from Texas, including Peri Gilpin, Glenn Morshower, Johnny Hardwick, Jonathan Joss and Mike Judge. Somehow, though, a show that crossed over with 30 Rock for several years never booked the actor whose role as Kenneth the Page made him synonymous with the state of Georgia: Jack McBrayer.

Based on the evidence of a new clip from the revival season, that seems like it’s about to change.

In the scene, Hank (Judge) is visiting Dallas’ George W. Bush Library with his wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy), and their friends Nancy and Dale Gribble (Ashley Gardner and Toby Huss). The...

Nick Kroll Reveals the ‘Sick Little D—’ Scene in ‘Big Mouth’ That Netflix Asked to Be Cut: ‘It’s the Grossest Thing’
Image
Just when you think coming-of-age animated series “Big Mouth” on Netflix couldn’t be any raunchier, co-creator and star Nick Kroll reveals the time that he and his cohorts realized they probably went too far.

“Maury [Kroll] was allowed to have sex with the decapitated skull of Garrison Keillor, and this was before Keillor went down, mind you, and [Netflix] still let that go,” Kroll told me Thursday at the show’s series finale premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. (Minnesota Public Radio cut ties with Keillor in 2017 after an investigation found he had engaged in dozens of sexually inappropriate incidents over many years.)

“But there’s another moment in that scene where…Rick takes a thermometer out of his sick little dick, and a little bit of blood spurts out,” Kroll laughed. “It’s the grossest thing. Netflix was like, ‘Could you maybe…’ and we were like, ‘Yeah, we saw.

‘Big Mouth’ Packs Up Its Dildos and Diagrams Just When We Need Them Most
Image
Efforts by Republicans at all levels of government to make the populace more ignorant are, unfortunately, going great. As of 2023, 28 percent of American adults ranked at the lowest levels of literacy. Compared to the last decade, American students’ math scores have dropped steeply in an international test. And as if chipping away at the teaching of basic skills wasn’t enough, officials in Republican-led states have been on the march against sex education for years. Soon, you might not even be able to do your own independent study on the subject: the latest page from the Project 2025 playbook is a Republican bill to ban all pornography in the U.S. In our current era of prudishness, Netflix’s Big Mouth feels like a precious resource we should protect at all costs.

The penultimate season ended on such a tease — the first day of high school is where the show was leaving us?...

Murderbot episode 1 throws you right into the intriguing sci-fi world (Review)
Image
I feel like sci-fi thriller comedy shows aren't very common, but if done right they can be really interesting and entertaining. So far based on Apple TV+'s new show that falls in that category, Murderbot, the series definitely fits that bill. Two episodes dropped on premiere day, with one installment released each week of the 10-episode season.

The show is based on author Martha Wells' book series of the same name, starring Alexander Skarsgård as a security unit robot tasked with protecting the PreservationAux team who are on an expedition on an unknown planet. While it's there to protect them, SecUnit would rather watch its soap operas. Here's our review of Murderbot episode 1, "FreeCommerce!" Spoilers Below.

Alexander Skarsgård in Apple TV+'s Murderbot.

We're introduced to Murderbot itself from the very first scene, fed up with having to protect people. Especially those who are disrespectful. That's because the units...

Murderbot comes out very soon on the streamer, and we're already hooked on the sci-fi thriller action comedy just from the initial looks of it. Yes, it has all those genres wrapped into one. So it really isn't a very long watch, and it's easy to squeeze into your schedule. Going froward, you can only expect one episode each week though, with the finale on Friday, July 11, 2025. The series is an Apple TV+ original show, created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, and based on The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. That’s all that Alexander Skarsgård’s character wants to do in the new Apple TV+ sci-fi comedy “Murderbot.” The only difference between the character and us is that it is an android designed to protect and obey humans, but it hacked its programming and now has a mind of its own. The 10-episode first season debuts on Friday, May 16, and reviews have begun rolling out. ‘Murderbot’: Rise of Alexander Skarsgård as the Machine
Image
Is the title character of the new Apple TV+ series Murderbot the most relatable person, machine, or other in science fiction history? Yes, the security unit (played by Alexander Skarsgård) has no genitals and various deadly weapons built into its artificial body. But its desires are simple: “All I really wanted was to be left alone to watch my shows.”

Murderbot TV Review: Alexander Skarsgård leads the Apple TV+ sci-fi series based on the best-selling novels
Image
Plot: Based on Martha Wells’ bestselling Hugo and Nebula Award-winning book series, “Murderbot” is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

Review: A series called Murderbot seems like it would be focused on buckets of blood and bodies strewn every which way, but it is a surprisingly balanced blend of comedy and drama based on the book series by Martha Wells. With Alexander Skarsgard in the title role as the humanoid machine who hates humans as much as he dislikes working when his favorite television series is on, Murderbot faithfully interprets the source material. With impressive production values courtesy of the deep pockets at Apple Studios,...
