Colin Chilvers Dies: Oscar-Winning VFX Director Who Helped Christopher Reeve Fly and Michael Jackson Lean Into ‘Smooth Criminal’ Was 79
Image
Colin Chilvers, a pioneering, Oscar-winning Hollywood visual effects artist who created movie magic for Superman, apocalyptic scenarios and even The Who’s Tommy, died November 19 in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he lived. He was 79.

His death was first reported Wednesday by the news station 101.1 FM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Among Chilvers’ more memorable feats were the effects that gave Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder the illusion of flying in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman, work that had him share in a team Oscar for Visual Effects.

In 1986, Chilvers created the dazzling trickery that allowed Michael Jackson to defy gravity by leaning forward 45 degrees with no visible means of support in the music video for “Smooth Criminal.” Chilvers directed the video, along with various other Jackson video collections.

Chilvers’ post-Superman credits from the ’80s through the 2000s also included Superman 2 and Superman 3, Bride of Chucky, X-Men and K-19: The Widowmaker.

Sinead O'Connor's body handed over to relatives after autopsy
Image
London, Aug 4 (Ians) Irish singer Sinead O’Connor’s body has been released to her relatives following an autopsy.

The music legend, famed for her powerful voice, died aged 56 on July 26 at her home in south-east London.

At the time, it was believed her death was not being treated as suspicious.

Later her body was taken for an autopsy in order to “secure a medical cause of death”, but a post-mortem examination report may not be received for “some weeks”, mirror.co.uk reported.

The London Inner South Coroner’s Court confirmed that they would make a decision as to whether they will open an inquest after the results of the autopsy are known and following submissions from her relatives.

John Thompson, clerk at the London Inner South district court, confirmed in a statement on behalf of senior coroner Andrew Harris that the conclusion of the autopsy will be publicly disclosed if an inquest is opened.

Review: 'City Baby' A Modest, Well-Made Portrait Of A Womanchild Trapped In Portland
David F. Morgan's "City Baby" is a modest character study of Cloey (Cora Benesh, who also co-wrote the screenplay), an aspiring...something, boldly going nowhere. With her father (Daniel Baldwin) footing the bills without question, Cloey is free to pursue her relationship with aging rockstar-wannabe Jesse (Andrew Harris) as she perpetually despairs over her life in Portland. When a blown audition call leads to a meet-cute with Michael (Richard Keith), a considerably more on-point ad exec, Cloey juggles competing feelings while attempting to come into her own as a twenty-something layabout. Yes, it's a story that's been told half to death in the last decade or so, but Morgan never lets it get too portentous and Benesh leads a strong cast while turning in a strong performance that's only somewhat undone by an tidy ending that feels out of step with the rest of the film. Despite our impression...
