"Redheaded Stepchild Of All My Films": Kevin Smith Sees The Bright Side Of $35.5M Ben Affleck Movie
Image
Years later, Kevin Smith reflects optimistically on Jersey Girl. Jersey Girl is a 2004 film written and directed by Smith, that chronicles the story of a widower who has to take care of his young daughter and work on his life and career following a tragedy. Ben Affleck plays the lead role of Ollie Trinke in Jersey Girl, with a supporting cast that includes Liv Tyler, Raquel Castro, Betty Aberlin, and Paulie Litt.

Twenty years after the release of Jersey Girl, Smith discusses the film in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The director said that "Jersey Girl for the longest time was the redheaded stepchild of all [his] films." In defense of Jersey Girls, however, Smith reminded audiences that Jersey Girl made $25 million at the box office. He also pointed out how hard the release was in the "post-Gigli climate," noting the former film made just $6 million. Check out the full quote...

“We wanted to make sure that it felt like any other episode of The League,” series creator Jeff Schaffer tells TVLine of the finale. “We didn’t want it to be some sentimental goodbye. It’s a whole bunch of stories that come together unexpectedly,...

Kristen Bell in The Lifeguard (2013)
Title: The Lifeguard Director: Liz W. Garcia Starring: Kristen Bell, Mamie Gummer, Martin Starr, David Lambert, Alex Shaffer, Joshua Harto, John Finn, Paulie Litt, Adam Lefevre, Amy Madigan The seriocomic feature film debut of television director Liz W. Garcia, “The Lifeguard” offers up a contrived series of precious posed moments in telling the story of a young career woman who moves back home in an effort to shake off a low-lying cloud of personal and professional ambivalence. In her starring role, Kristen Bell delivers a charming, engaging performance, but the much sharper take on this same sort of thirtysomething ennui (even though Bell’s character is quick to point out that [ Read More ]

Our five favorite friendly movie monkeys
John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, and Catherine Keener in Being John Malkovich (1999)
Human-simian relations go terribly awry in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" with James Franco this week. Unfortunately, it is not the first time that humans and monkeys have come to blows in film, but Homo sapiens have had a few ape friends over the years. In fact, sometimes chimps can even be heroes. Here are the five movie monkeys that we would most like to hang out with if given the chance.

5. Ed, "Ed" (1996)

Jack Cooper's (Matt LeBlanc) baseball-playing sidekick copped some attitude and gave a horrible Razzie-winning performance in "Ed." If you haven't seen it, just spend a couple of minutes watching the trailer, and you'll think you're looking at something concocted by the Onion or "Tim and Eric's Awesome Show, Great Job!" The film is very real, though, and it's a true testament to the fact that even the worst movie ever written can still...

"Doubt" review - Meryl Streep is the perfect villain.
Doubtby Steve Ramos, Writer Meryl Streep is the perfect villain in suspenseful ‘Doubt’ If esteemed film critic Pauline Kael were still alive, watching and reviewing movies, I imagine she would pounce all over Meryl Streep for her performance in “Doubt” as villainous Sister Aloysius, a Bronx school principal and Catholic nun in 1964, convinced that a young priest, Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), molested a male student. Kael frequently accused Streep of playacting, of emphasizing foreign accents and changes in her physical appearance instead of more natural performances. With “Doubt,” the most intimate of the year- end, prestige releases, a period film drama that’s nearly perfect, Kael would have targeted Streep’s Irish lilt, wire-framed spectacles and black bonnet and cloak. Kael would have criticized Streep for once again playing dress up but in the case of writer/director John Patrick Shanley’s “Doubt,” an adaptation of his acclaimed stage play,...
