Carrie Underwood Won Me Over in American Idol’s Season 23 Premiere — Watch the Moment That Sealed It
Image
Heading into Season 23 of American Idol, I had my reservations about Carrie Underwood joining the judges’ panel. I have nothing against her as a person, and certainly not as an artist, but I just didn’t think she’d be able to keep the show’s energy up. (Say what you will about Katy Perry, and I know she had her share of haters, but that woman did so much heavy lifting during her seven-season run.)

Then came Sunday’s premiere, during which something hit me like a Louisville Slugger. And like so many unexpected revelations, it came via the...

What's on TV tonight, Nov. 20, 2024?
Image
It’s TV time! Well, almost! It’s time to find out what’s airing across the five broadcast networks tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 20.

There is a change to ABC’s schedule, with none of the usual suspects airing. For NBC, it’s a big night of fall finales. You will not want to miss a beat of broadcast tonight.

CMA Awards, One Chicago fall finales, and much more

Let’s start with the change to ABC’s schedule. There isn’t a new episode of Abbott Elementary, and, of course, The Golden Bachelorette aired its finale last week. What’s on tonight, instead? It’s all about the CMA Awards tonight.

This is Country’s biggest night of the year. It’s the 58th year of the awards, and the likes of Kelsea Ballerini, Jelly Roll, and Eric Church will perform throughout the night. Luke Bryant, Lainey Wilson, and Peyton Manning...

Katy Perry may be leaving American Idol but the show goes on.

The music talent format has been renewed for its eighth season at ABC and 23rd season overall.

The renewal comes ahead of its Season 22 Grand Finale, which takes place on Sunday, May 19.

In February, Perry revealed that she was leaving the show after this season. The show is now looking for her replacement to sit alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryant on the judging panel. Deadline hears that there have been conversations with a number of high-profile stars but there is no deal for Perry’s replacement.

American Idol’s Luke Bryan Reveals If He’s Shocked By Katy Perry’s Upcoming Exit
Image
Luke Bryan suspected Katy Perry's departure from American Idol, so her announcement didn't come as a huge shock to him. Luke praised Katy for being a great mother and expressed admiration for her, even joking about giving her fishing advice. Katy Perry announced her departure on Jimmy Kimmel Live and mentioned her love for the show and connection with America.

Luke Bryan is confirming he had a suspicion that Katy Perry was leaving American Idol after the current season. American Idol season 22 premiered in February 2024. The reality TV show previously ran on Fox for 15 seasons before it was canceled in 2016. Katy became a judge alongside Luke and Lionel Richie when the series was revived by ABC in 2018. After the news, Lionel joked that his phone blew up, and it made him run off the road when he first heard of Katy’s departure. Lionel wasn’t aware that Katy was leaving,...

Love At First Sight Review: Haley Lu Richardson & Ben Hardy Lead Charming Rom-Com
Image
Hadley and Oliver may seem like opposites, but their similarities and undeniable chemistry make us believe they are destined to be together. The film could have delved deeper into the story, but the charming directing and cinematography keep us engaged with its pleasant visual aesthetic. Love at First Sight may not be laugh-out-loud funny, but its intentions, sweetness, and tenderness make it a perfect choice for a light, heartfelt romantic comedy.

Netflix's latest romantic comedy, Love at First Sight, is the film adaptation of Jennifer E. Smith’s The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight. It follows Hadley Sullivan (Haley Lu Richardson), an American flying to London for her father's second wedding, and Oliver (Ben Hardy), a mathematician returning home for familial obligation. Although the film's narrator, Jameela Jamil, claims this story is not about love, it is about love and fate.

Hadley and Oliver could not be more different.

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die Cinematographer Luke Bryant on Those Epic Shots
Image
Life in the 10th century was intense. Look no further than The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, which recently hit Netflix. The stand-alone feature-length film marks a fitting final touch to the popular British Netflix series, The Last Kingdom, which is based on the compelling novels by Bernard Cornwell. Written by Martha Hillier and directed by Ed Bazalgette, the film takes place eight years after the events of season five, leaping off the series to bring back Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon).

He’s the daunting warrior leader of a Northumbria region who now is confronted by the death of King Edward, to whom Uhtred vowed allegiance when season five bowed. The King’s son, Aethelstan (Harry Gilby) rises to power and decides — advised, perhaps — to take over all of Britain’s kingdoms.

Bold move. How will he overthrow eight kings? A prophecy suggests that seven of those kings will perish...

Mbc Studios Launches Groundbreaking Saudi Crime Drama ‘Rashash’ Created by U.K. Writer Tony Jordan
Image
As it ramps up original productions, Middle Eastern broadcaster Mbc is launching lavish 1980s-set Arabic crime drama ‘Rashash,’ created by Britain’s Tony Jordan (“EastEnders”) and touted as its most ambitious Saudi series to date.

Directed by another Brit, Collin Teague, whose credits include “Doctor Who,” “Rashash” is based on the true story of a Saudi Arabian drug trafficker convicted of murder and other crimes after being caught by the police in Saudi Arabia in the late 1980s, according to promotional materials.

The eight-part “Rashash” series will drop Jan. 21 on Mbc’s Shahid VIP — the rapidly growing revamped streaming service that was launched a year ago and has gone from 100,000 subscribers in January 2020 to more than 1 million paying customers, Mbc claims.

Another Arabic crime series created by Tony Jordan, “Blood Oath,” co-produced by Mbc with Lebanon-based Eagle Films, which is an Arabic adaptation of Jordan’s thriller series “Besa,” originally...

Fantasia 2020 Review: The Reckoning is an Epic Examination of the Witch Trials
Image
The Reckoning greets us with the image of a mass grave. It’s England in 1665, the Great Plague has plunged the country into fear, paranoia, and sickness. The cause of “the sickness,” as they call it, is unknown to them, but they must blame something. And like all who follow the Christian doctrine, they blame the Devil and those who represent him. Lucifer’s acolytes, in their mind, are witches. While witch trials during this time were beginning to decline, “Witch Finders” kept this murder of innocent women rampant. Writer-director Neil Marshall explores this dark time in history and a true tale of horrors in his new, epic film. An examination of the trauma and pain caused by these trials that the film estimates killed 500,000 women across continents.

The Reckoning begins in a very melodramatic fashion. A young widow and mother, Grace, is grieving her husband, Joseph (Joe Anderson). She...

American Idol Recap: Katy Perry Warns the First Romantic Couple of Season 18
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol (2002)
American Idol auditions continued on Sunday, serving up enough raw talent and dramatic backstories to leave you feeling dizzy. And if that didn’t do the trick, there was also a gas leak!

It was actually a fairly dramatic to-do, even if no one was ever in any real danger. (Confession: When Katy Perry fell to the ground in a dramatic fashion, part of me thought she wasn’t joking. For like a second.)

Exclusive: Dominic Sherwood Vamps it Up for Vampire Academy
In the upcoming film Vampire Academy (based upon the series of bestselling books by Richelle Mead), British heartthrob Dominic Sherwood plays Christian Ozera, a schoolboy who’s caught in an unusual love triangle…

not to mention a vampiric battle of the ages. Dread Central sat down with Dom last week, and he told us all about it.

Dread Central: Pretty much this whole film takes place on campus. So, we've gotta ask: What was your high school experience like?

Dominic Sherwood: We call it secondary school. It actually wasn't too bad, the only thing I really struggled with was, we didn't have an acting department, we didn't have a drama department so I couldn't study that from 11-16, it wasn't an option to us and it wasn't available. In fact, obviously because of that when I told people I wanted to be an actor, they were like, 'You should probably do something in,...

Haven Preview: Kate Kelton Teases Romance, Jordan's Quest To End The Troubles
When we last talked to Kate Kelton about her return to Haven Season 4 and the role of Jordan McKee, she filled us in on how her Troubled character (and fan favorite) escaped death in last season’s finale.

But now that we’re a few episodes in, much has happened, the biggest being that Audrey (Emily Rose) is finally on a quest to get back to Haven (as well as regain her memory) with the help of guest star Colin Ferguson. And then, of course, Jordan is hell-bent on getting The Troubles gone for good and seems poised to do whatever it takes to make that a reality.

I recently sat down with Kelton, who gave me an idea of what’s next including some hot and heavy action and, of course, she teased some big surprises coming up.

TV Fanatic: Jordan seems as though she's getting more desperate (or...
