Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
The 55th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which was canceled last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will return in late August with a lineup of 32 new feature films plus an extensive tribute to Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation, Kviff organizers announced on Tuesday.

The two main sections of the festival, the Crystal Globe Competition and the East of the West Competition, will for the first time include documentary films, which in the past had been excluded from competition or kept in their own sections.

The Film Foundation tribute will include screenings of 10 films restored by the organization Scorsese founded in 1990. The “Czech devil” to be summoned on the big screen in Arvéd - Production / Funding - Czech Republic/Slovakia
Image
Vojtěch Mašek’s period biopic and claustrophobic mystical thriller, about Czech occultist Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský, has started shooting in Prague. After Charlatan, another period biopic is in the works in the Czech Republic. Vojtěch Mašek, the co-writer of Václav Kadrnka’s Little Crusader and the winner of several Muriel Czech Comics Awards, has started shooting his feature-length debut, Arvéd, based on the real life of controversial personality Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský (1897-1951). “Doctor of law and philosophy, occultist, Nazi collaborator, informer, false witness and communist henchman,” actor Michal Kern, who portrays Smíchovský in the film, says as he describes the protagonist. The script is inspired by the book Malostranský ďábel (lit. “The Devil of Malá Strana”) by Jan Poláček and follows the titular key figure of Czech occultism and hermeticism. Poláček worked on the script with Mašek. The film is described as a Faustian chamber period drama. “I believe that, for many,...

Václav Kadrnka finishes shooting Saving One Who Was Dead - Production / Funding - Czech Republic/Slovakia
Image
After his award-winning debut, Eighty Letters, and the critically acclaimed Little Crusader, the Czech auteur is finishing the final instalment in his “Absence of a Loved One” trilogy. Czech writer-director-producer Václav Kadrnka, who won the Crystal Globe Award at Karlovy Vary for his sophomore feature, Little Crusader, in 2017, is just one of the many domestic filmmakers whose latest productions have been disrupted by the lockdown measures. Kadrnka was shooting his third feature-length project, Saving One Who Was Dead, when the production had to be put on hold after the coronavirus outbreak, having shot one-third of the material. As the Czech Republic lifted the strict preventive measures and enabled film productions to restart while adhering to self-regulatory recommendations as a form of protection against Covid-19 (see the news), Kadrnka returned to the set to film the remaining material, with the crew wrapping the shoot on 24 May. Shooting is taking...

The Golden Donkey Berlinale 2011
The crows knew it from Day One: Berlin 2011 would be a—slightly—happier experience. Normally, when night began to fall, the crows descended upon the frost-bleak trees around Potsdamer Platz and cawcawed for hours, filling the silence of bad cinema, crushed hopes and now-for-real lost illusions with their woe-cum sorrowful sounding songs. Hundreds, maybe thousands of them. The trees were black for birds. Every evening, starting around 5pm or 6pm, reliably—you could set your watch to them (if you take things easy, that is...). Yet, this time around, the crows were nowhere to be seen. Maybe it's true what a friend of TO1..., comrade Möller suggested: It looks as if the crows were trying to make Berlin their permanent home, become true city slickers, which necessitates certain changes of behavior; rings scientifically solid. Still, we couldn't shake off the feeling that they somehow sensed a thing or two,...
