Why Malta Would Be a ‘Dream’ Location for the Next James Bond Movie
Image
Denis Villeneuve hasn’t made the trip to shoot on the Mediterranean islands of Malta yet. But if Malta’s film commissioner has anything to say about it, he hopes Villeneuve could follow filmmakers like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg to shoot the next James Bond film among the country’s atmospheric ancient villages and stunning sea locations.

“I hope we’ll have the opportunity,” says Johann Grech, film commissioner and CEO of Malta Film Studios. “It’s an ambition, it’s a dream.”

Though a couple of Bond movies shot very briefly in Malta, Grech says “Maybe it could play a bigger role in the next one. It was a dream for me to get back Ridley Scott, and after 22 years, we got him back.”

Scott chose the historic Fort Ricasoli and Malta Film Studio’s famous water tanks to shoot both “Gladiator” and “Gladiator II,” while his “Napoleon...

Amazon Wanted Henry Cavill's 'Highlander' Reboot as Part of Their Heavily Nostalgic Plans
Image
Audiences have been waiting for John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot for years now (no doubt many have wondered if they would be required to live forever to actually see it), with the Henry Cavill-led project having now shifted from the studio behind Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga, Lionsgate, to Amazon MGM Studios. While it wasn’t revealed at the time why such a move was made, it’s possible we now have our reason...and it’s either good news or bad news, depending on how nostalgic you’re feeling.

According to a new report (via JoBlo), Amazon chose to step in and pick up the reboot of the beloved franchise as they are now determined to put a lot of stock into well-known 80s IP. Leaning further into nostalgia, the studio is reportedly doing everything they can to “attract a Gen-x-focused audience,” which also includes their...

Christopher Lambert in Highlander (1986)
The Highlander remake moved from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM because the studio is banking on nostalgia IP
Christopher Lambert in Highlander (1986)
Among the many delays in the long gestation of the Highlander reboot, Lionsgate had planned an expansive new franchise for the franchise under Chad Stahelski’s direction, but things changed as a report stated that his “vision for the film fit better into the Amazon model.” It was recently reported that the mystical film, which has Henry Cavill‘s attachment, migrated from Lionsgate to Amazon MGM. The new deal will give United Artists full rights to the franchise, with Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt set to produce alongside Neal H. Moritz and 87Eleven Entertainment.

The Wrap now reports that one of the reasons Amazon MGM is getting friendly with the 80s IP is because the studio is embracing the call for nostalgic revamps. Their strategy is to attract a Gen-x-focused audience that also played into their success with “dad TV” action shows like Jack Ryan and Reacher. Along with Highlander,...

Why ‘Highlander’ Left Lionsgate for Amazon as the Studio Bets Big on ’80s IP
Image
Chad Stalhelski, the erstwhile stunt coordinator-turned-director who transformed “John Wick” from a potential direct-to-video action movie into one of the most inventive, visually ravishing franchises in modern cinema, was ready for a change.

He had made four films in the Keanu Reeves-starring series, with the fourth film grossing almost $450 million worldwide. More importantly, he had created an entirely new universe for Lionsgate and producers Thunder Road that now included streaming series, big screen spinoffs and an upcoming animated prequel. Stahelski would still oversee these projects, but he hankered for something different. He wanted to reinvent a classic from his childhood, the 1986 fantasy film “Highlander,” in a way that only he could – his version would be bold, brutal and 100% his.

Stahelski first started working on a new “Highlander” movie in 2016, but as it finally seemed primed to go into production, TheWrap learned last month that Stahelski’s “Highlander” would move...

Deadpool Creator Rob Liefeld’s Very Good, Very Lucrative Year
Image
For the past decade, Deadpool has become an unlikely success story as the raunchy outsider upended Hollywood norms, broke box office records and reached new heights with this summer’s $1.3 billion grosser, Deadpool & Wolverine. The character also transformed Ryan Reynolds into one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

But more quietly, the man who birthed Deadpool has parlayed that success into rewards almost unheard of for any comic book creator. Over the past year, writer-artist Rob Liefeld capitalize on the cachet from the character with a multiple deals involving producers and studios hoping to find “the next Deadpool.”

In April, ahead of Deadpool’s July opening, Warner Bros. picked up the rights to Avengelyne, based on a fallen angel character cast down to Earth comic from the 1990s. The A-list package has Olivia Wilde attached to direct and Margot Robbie and Simon Kinberg attached to produce. That deal...

Remo Williams Will Finally Continue His Adventures In A TV Series
Image
In 1985, the late Fred Ward starred in a pulpy action movie called "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins," about a Brooklyn cop and Vietnam vet, who has his death faked and his face surgically altered to become a martial artist and government assassin. Based on the long-running "Destroyer" series of books by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir, the film was meant to jumpstart a new franchise, with its title suggesting that Remo, like Batman, was just beginning his screen adventures and would enjoy many more of them.

Alas, "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" opened at #4 at the box office, to lackluster reviews. An official sequel never materialized, which left Remo's exploits confined to the status of a cult favorite until now. His remaining adventures have instead played out in over 150 novels—and one abortive TV series that never made it past the pilot episode in 1988.

Good news, though, Remo Williams fans:...

Better Call Saul's Gordon Smith Producing The Destroyer Series For Sony
Image
After starring in over 150 novels, Remo Williams is making his way to the small screen Screen Rant can confirm. First published in 1971, The Destroyer was a pulp novel series conceived by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir. When the first Destroyer book opens, cop protagonist Remo Williams is framed for a crime he didn't commit and apparently sentenced to death. Such a bleak fate is thankfully overturned when he learns that the government has actually faked his death in order to recruit him into a top-secret agency known as Cure.

Using his detective skills and brutal martial arts training, Remo soon rises in the ranks and becomes critical to the protection of the country. The training in question was instilled in him by Master Chiun and is called Shinanju, which is a fictional Korean fighting style that takes shape over the course of the first several novels. It will also almost...

The Destroyer: Better Call Saul executive producer is developing a Remo Williams TV series
Image
Several decades ago, authors Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir teamed up to start a pulp paperback series called The Destroyer. The first book was titled Created, The Destroyer, and introduced a hero named Remo Williams. More than 150 novels in The Destroyer series have been published over the years, and in 1985 there was an attempt to bring the concept to the big screen in the film Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. That movie was a box office failure, so the adventure also ended right there. But nearly forty years later, Remo Williams is being revived by Sony Pictures Television – and Better Call Saul executive producer Gordon Smith is on board to write the Destroyer / Remo Williams TV series.

Smith will also executive produce the show alongside Adrian Askarieh of Prime Universe Films.

As Deadline reminds us, the Destroyer books center on a U.S. government operative named Remo Williams, a former...

‘300’ Writer Kurt Johnstad Tapped to Write Jake Gyllenhaal Comic Book Movie ‘Prophet’ (Exclusive)
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Action writer Kurt Johnstad has been brought in to work on Prophet, Studio 8’s adaption of a comic book series by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld.

Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star and Sam Hargrave, the director of action hit Extraction, is on board to helm the adaptation.

The character, a man-out-of-time idea paired with a super soldier serum concept, was introduced by Liefeld in the pages of Youngblood, his creator-owned comic he wrote and drew after famously leaving Marvel in the early 1990s. The character was then spun off into his own book.

The comic focused on John Prophet, a man conscripted by Germans near the end of World War II and subjected to scientific experiments that gave him superhuman strength. (In a revival of the comic in the 2010s, the story was thrust 10,000 years into the future.)

In Studio 8’s project,...

Catherine Hardwicke
Catherine Hardwicke to Direct Man-Hating Lesbian Viking Movie ‘Heathen’
Catherine Hardwicke
Catherine Hardwicke, director of “Thirteen” and “Twilight,” has signed on to direct lesbian viking film “Heathen,” Deadline is reporting. The project is an adaptation of the acclaimed Vault Comics series of the same name, which was created, written, and drawn by Natasha Alterici. The story follows fierce Viking warrior Aydis, who is scorned by her village for kissing another woman and declares a one-woman feminist war against the ultimate patriarch, Odin, the god-king of Asgard and all-seeing father to thunder-god Thor. The series is said to blend feminist and queer themes into the established stories of Norse mythology.

Hardwick will direct off a script by Kerry Williamson, whose credits include Tyler Perry’s “Alex Cross” and the Netflix film “What Happened to Monday?” Williamson is currently working on a project for “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski, adapting the bestselling fantasy series “Sandman Slim.”

The project is being backed by independent German distributor Constantin Film,...

‘Heathen’: Catherine Hardwicke Will Direct Feminist Viking Fantasy For Constantin Film
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in Twilight (2008)
Director Catherine Hardwicke will helm the fantasy-adventure epic Heathen for Constatin Film and Prime Universe Films. The project adapts the namesake Vault Comics series that centers on Aydis, a fierce Viking warrior who is scorned by her village for kissing another woman and then, after witnessing widespread injustice toward women, declares a one-woman feminist war on Odin himself.

The acclaimed series by Natasha Alterici weaves feminism and queer themes into the familiar tapestry of Norse mythology, a mix that promises to deliver a Viking film unlike any previous one in the annals of Hollywood. Created, written, and drawn by Alterici, the Heathen comics debuted in 2017 with the help of an impassioned Kickstarter investor community. The comics introduce Aydis, who is born into a time marked by war, strife, and the pervasive subjugation of women, and eventually takes on a mission to topple the ultimate patriarch,...

Marvel Cinematic Universe Post-‘Endgame': Why Diversity Is the New Superpower
Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation on Saturday wasn’t just a celebration of the success of “Avengers: Endgame” and a map of the company’s upcoming film slate — it was also a clear demonstration of a more diverse future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and perhaps Hollywood overall.

It’s not entirely accurate to say that the previous waves of Marvel films were led by three white guys named Chris. But it’s true that despite the growing diversity of casting, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has so far had mostly white and male stars in the title roles.

But as fans saw on Saturday in Hall H, the post-“Endgame” Marvel is a very different animal. Kicking off next May with the standalone “Black Widow” film starring Scarlett Johansson. Then in November 2020 comes “The Eternals” with Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek and Kumail Nanjiani and Tony-nominated deaf actress Lauren Ridloff, followed by...

Just Cause Movie Gets John Wick Writer, Shooting Begins in 2020
The Just Cause movie has new life, as Constantine Film has stepped in and scooped up the rights to the popular video game franchise. What's more, they've hired John Wick franchise creator Derek Kolstad to pen the big screen adaptation. This is a project that has been kicking around Hollywood, in some form or another, for a very long time, but it seems that its new home is rather serious about pulling the trigger sooner rather than later.

According to various reports, Constantine Film aims to get production on Just Cause going in 2020. Derek Kolstad will pen the screenplay. At present, there is no word on who could wind up in the director's chair, nor is it clear who could wind up in the lead role. Back in March 2017, Aquaman star Jason Momoa was attached, with Brad Peyton (Rampage) on deck to direct. It's quite likely now that the project...

The series draws its name from the 1989 United States invasion of Panama, code-named Operation Just Cause. The action takes place on various islands. The film will follow Rico Rodriguez (aka “The Scorpion”) on a race-against-time mission to stop the lethal mercenary group the Black Hand.
