LuxBox debuted a fest promo trailer for The Dog Who Wouldn't Be Quiet, an Argentinian drama that just premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and next stops by the Rotterdam Film Festival. She’s joined in the cast by Daniel Katz, Valeria Lois, Mirella Pascual, and Carlos Portaluppi, produced by the director and Laura Huberman from a script by first-time scribe Gonzalo Delgado on a project that is being coined by the film’s producer as a “profound and political film”.

Sundance Film Festival 2016 Midnight and Competition Movie Lineup
The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.

The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Some of...

Trailer for the Brooding, Atmospheric, ‘History of Fear’
Earlier this week, the Doha Film Institute, the Qatari cultural organization, announced the recipients for its debut global movie grants program during the 64th Berlin International Film Festival. Among the 20 projects receiving support is Argentine filmmaker Benjamin Naishtat’s debut feature film History of Fear, which made its world debut Feb. 9 as part of the Berlinale official competition lineup. Starring Jonathan Da Rosa, Tatiana Giménez, Mirella Pascual, Claudia Cantero and Francisco Lumerman, the film is described as a movie that tries to codify social and political problems, and the failure of the social system in Argentina, using the horror genre. Naishtat has been working on the movie for four years, weaving together character and genre elements into what looks to be a compelling concoction. A trailer has been released which you can watch below. Enjoy!

Penumbra Finds a Home on DVD this August
Adrián and Ramiro García Bogliano's strangely enticing abduction flick Penumbra (review) is headed to DVD on August 28, 2012 courtesy of IFC Midnight and Mpi Media Group. The picture's already earned high marks from plenty of noteworthy media outlets (Bhm included) thanks to some eerie writing, a couple excellent performances and a strangely satisfying finale. The film stars Cristina Brondo, Camila Bordonaba, Berta Muñiz, Arnaldo Andre, Diego Cremonesi, Mirella Pascual and Victoria Witemburg. The highly respected Franco Burattini handles the special effects work.

Penumbra Movie Review
Penumbra (2011)
Title: Penumbra Directors: Adrian and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano Starring: Cristina Brondo, Camila Bordonaba, Sebastian Muniz, Mirella Pascual, Diego Cremonesi, Victoria Witemburg, Omar Gioiosa, Maria Nela Sinisterra An Argentinean import that scared up a big positive reaction at last year’s Fantastic Fest, “Penumbra” is a slick, teasing, well constructed genre offering that rather skillfully exploits audience antipathy toward its bitch-on-wheels protagonist in slowly unspooling the story of a potential cult looking to find a secluded apartment in advance of an extremely rare solar eclipse. A thriller long on suspense if short on eventual explication, the movie is anchored by a fierce performance from Cristina Brondo. “Penumbra” is set in Buenos Aires. After a [ Read More ]...

Last Summer of La Boyita, The (El último verano de la Boyita) | Review - aGLIFF 2010 (Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival)
Director: Julia Solomonoff Writer: Julia Solomonoff Starring: Guadalupe Alonso, Gabo Correa, María Clara Merendino,Mirella Pascual, Guillermo Pfening People seem to be undergoing drastic changes around Jorgelina (Guadalupe Alonso). Jorgelina's older sister, Luciana (María Clara Merendino), has begun collecting her monthly bill and officially enters the world of push-up bras and feminine hygiene products (a.k.a. adolescence). With hormones a blazing, Luciana only cares about boys now; suddenly, Jorgelina has gone from playmate and friend to a mere annoyance to her sister. Rather than going on a beach vacation with her mother and hormonal sister, Jorgelina opts to travel to the Argentinean countryside – the Pampas – with her father (Gabo Correa) to spend the summer swimming and horseback riding. Lonely for a playmate, Jorgelina desperately shadows a young and withdrawn ranch hand, Mario (Nicolás Treise). But Mario has little time for childish recreation; not only must Mario assist his aging...

CANNES -- A slow-moving and quite dull film, "Whisky", directed by Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, could have used a shot or two of the hard stuff. As it is, the title comes from what apparently in Uruguay a photographer asks his subjects to say to the camera, just as other countries say "cheese."

The smiles are few and far between, however, in this story of an aging sock-factory owner named Jacobo Koller (Andres Pazos) who asks his assistant, Marta (Mirella Pascual), to pretend to be his wife while his estranged brother, Herman (Jorge Bolani), visits from Brazil.

The film, a Control-Z Films/Fernando Epstein production, has some affection for these three deeply lonely people who lead solitary lives with considerable dignity, and some gentle humor is derived from their singular habits.

Marta and Jacobo always arrive at his small sock factory at the same time and perform the same rituals. He calls her Marta; she calls him Mr. Koller. When he invites her into his home, where he has lived for years with his recently deceased mother, the dynamics of their relationship are thrown out of kilter.

The younger brother's arrival further adds to the dislocation in their lives, and neither is capable of addressing it until Jacobo makes a fateful decision in a casino. There is little suspense, however, and while all the attention on the small details of their lives is laudable, it isn't very interesting.
