With Marvel Mia from San Deigo Comic-Con, Disney pulled out all stops for its Tron: Ares panel. Dazzling light show. Eye-popping clips from the movie. A new Nine Inch Nails music video. A stacked lineup of Jeff Bridges, Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Cameron Monaghan, along with director Joachim Rønning, and creator-producer Steven Lisberger, who wrote and directed the original, with certified nerd Kevin Smith moderating.
As Smith pointed out from the jump, the original Tron’s influence far outweighed its meager box office in 1982, a year where the sci-fi film was overshadowed by the likes of E.T., Blade Runner, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, and The Road Warrior. “It was a visionary science-fiction motion picture that wasn’t appreciated in its time,” Smith said. Indeed, Tron’s pioneering use of computer graphics and concept of the Grid,...

Cast members and filmmakers from Predator: Badlands and Tron: Ares attended the San Diego Comic-Con on Friday for two special panels hosted by The Walt Disney Studios and moderated by Kevin Smith in Hall H.
The first panel featured the stars of 20th Century Studios’ Predator: Badlands, Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, and the film’s director/producer, Dan Trachtenberg, who were greeted by the more than 6,500 Comic-Con attendees wearing Predator masks. A 7-foot-tall real-life Predator descended upon Hall H and used its heat signature abilities to scope the room, zeroing in on Smith.
A brief Q&a followed, which focused on details of the upcoming action-adventure film and included legendary creature designer Alec Gillis, touching briefly on the recent animated film Predator: Killer of Killers. Before Jeff Bridges got to the set of Tron: Ares, he was informed that his co-star Jared Leto would prefer to be addressed by his character, Ares. The Oscar-winner is known for his method acting ways.
“He’s one of those guys. Everyone has different methods and modes man,” said Bridges to laughs during Tron: Ares’ laser-heavy presentation at San Diego Comic-Con Friday.
“I didn’t want to offend him as a thespo,” Bridges continued, addressing Leto, who is known as a method actor. “But I thought, ‘I wanted to have a certain intimacy with you. I know your name is Ares. Can I just call you Air?’ He said, ‘Yeah man! You can call me whatever you want!’ We had a great time.”
Leto, for his part, recalled the first scene he had with Bridges. “I just blurted out, ‘cut!’ Everyone was surprised, because I don’t often do that.

No, Dr. Doom didn’t show up at this year’s Comic-Con. But Disney sure as hell brought the dazzle with a laser light show that one-upped what they pulled off at CinemaCon, complete with a Tron: Ares logo in full neon red and two Tron-like warriors marching to the front of the stage.
“Did you see that entrance?” asked moderator Kevin Smith, “That cost more than Clerks!“
At the panel were director Joachim Rønning with stars Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, Cameron Monaghan, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges who reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, the programmer from the original 1982 movie who gets caught in his own videogame. Leto drew big cheers from the crowd, as did Bridges.
In the third Tron movie, a highly sophisticated program, Ares (played by Oscar winner Leto) is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission.

In 1982, Steven Lisberger changed the landscape for effects-driven cinema with Tron. In 2010, Joseph Kosinski changed the game again with Tron Legacy, a smartly formulated, visually dazzling reboot-cum-legacy sequel set to the throbbing beats of Daft Punk. Now, 15 years later, Joachim Rønning is picking up the bright neon torch to push the envelope once again with Tron: Ares, a movie that's set to see worlds collide as, for the first time in the franchise's history, we're not heading to the Grid — the Grid's heading for us. The official trailer for "Tron: Ares" is here, and it has quite a bit going for it. Like both of its predecessors, "Tron" and "Tron: Legacy," however, it appears that there are two very important elements driving "Tron: Ares" — its soundtrack and its neon-soaked visuals. Despite being snubbed for an Oscar nomination (because the Academy thought using a computer for visual effects was "cheating" back in 1982), "Tron" helped blow the lid off of what can be done in special effects and paved the way for more computer-generated imagery (CGI) in movies and TV. It only makes sense, then, that its sequels would also be visually stunning, and "Legacy" absolutely nailed the assignment back in 2010. So, what about "Ares"?
Based on the film's trailer (see above), which features all kinds of cool visuals with lots of neon-streaked vehicles and armor, "Ares" is going to take the stellar visuals of the "Tron...

Ahead of the movie’s big splash at San Diego Comic-Con next week in Hall H, Disney has dropped the official trailer for Tron: Ares, its reboot of the classic 1980s live-action, trapped-in-a-video-game movie.
But consider the Joachim Rønning-directed movie an allegory for current days.
A new poster also dropped today. See it below and the trailer above.
“So much talk of AI and big tech today,” exclaims Evan Peters’ Julian Dillinger, a corporate type who doesn’t seem to have a hippie agenda.
“Virtual worlds, what are they going to look like? When will we get there?” he asks in the trailer. “They are coming here.”
That kingdom come is in the form of an ultimate soldier, that being Ares (Oscar winner Jared Leto), who has come to Earth all ablaze in red neon lights, and the floating upside-down ‘U’ Tron-thingy; these shooting lasers are splicing this and...

Jared Leto is continuing being a franchise baddie. After starring as antihero Morbius in the MCU, plus playing the controversial WeWork founder, the actor is now joining the “Tron” digital universe as the titular villain of “Tron: Ares.”
Joachim Rønning (“The Young Woman and the Sea”) directs the third franchise film, which is written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne (“Adolescence”). Original lead Jeff Bridges returns, with Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Arturo Castro, Hasan Minhaj, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson co-starring. The official synopsis reads: “‘Tron: Ares’ follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings.”
The sci-fi franchise began in 1982 with Bridges playing a video game programmer who becomes trapped in the digital world. The sequel “Tron: Legacy” was released in 2010 with Garret Hedlund playing Bridges’ onscreen son; Joseph Kosinski directed.

The Grid is back online — and this time, it’s coming for our world. Disney has just unveiled a jaw-dropping look at Tron: Ares, the highly anticipated sequel to Tron: Legacy, and it’s everything fans have been hoping for and more: red neon, slick vehicles, gravity-defying action, and a pulsating soundtrack that promises to rewire your brain. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film marks a major evolution for the Tron franchise — one that brings Oscar-winner Jared Leto into the digital fold as the titular Ares, a rogue program with unclear (and likely sinister) motives. Also returning? The original Grid master himself, Jeff Bridges, reprising his iconic role as Kevin Flynn.
What Is 'Tron: Ares' About?
The biggest twist this time? The Grid isn’t confined to cyberspace anymore. Tron: Ares takes place after the events of Tron: Legacy, and will mark the first time that programs have made their way into the real world.

Ahead of next week’s San Diego Comic Con Hall H panel, Disney has unleashed a new trailer for their forthcoming legacy sequel “Tron: Ares,” from director Joachim Rønning, the latest installment of the franchise that began way back in 1982 with the cutting-edge “Tron.” You can watch it below. No coins necessary.
“Tron: Ares,” which follows 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” concerns a highly sophisticated program from the digital realm, Ares (Jared Leto), who crosses over into our world on what Disney is describing as a “dangerous mission.” This will mark humanity’s first encounter with A.I. beings. So far, the “Tron” films have taken primarily in the computer world; it’ll fun to see that world come into ours for the first time.
Joining Leto on and off the grid are Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson (as another Dillinger). And,...

New images from Disney's Tron: Areshave entered The Grid… the Instagram grid, that is. The snaps caused quite a stir on social media as they turned the spotlight on two of the film's major villainous characters, who threaten to be even more evil than Jared Leto's titular antagonist in the highly anticipated third installment of the groundbreaking Tron franchise. Marvel favorite Evan Peters and The X-Files leading lady Gillian Anderson both feature in the photos, offering a better look at their roles as Julian and Elisabeth Dillinger, respectively.
Fans of the Tron saga will recognize the Dillinger name. Ed Dillinger (David Warner) was the ruthless head of Encom in Disney's 1982 film, while his son, Ed Jr. (Cillian Murphy), made a cameo appearance in the 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy. The Dillinger dynasty will live on in the third feature, Tron: Ares, as Peters steps out as Julian, a new addition to the family lineage,...

Shark Month is in full swing on the Murder Made Fiction podcast. We kicked things on when Jenn guest starred on an episode of Horror Queers on 1975’s Jaws, and now we’re setting our sights on the Norwegian adventure film, Kon-Tiki (2012).
The film documents the real life adventure of a group of men who sailed across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands in 1947. Lead by ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl, the small group of men travelled in a raft made of balsawood in an effort to replicate both the materials and the journey of the ancient people from 1,500 years ago.
The real Heyerdahl was conducting the experiment with a slightly different (read: racist) thesis in mind – something that this adaptation wisely chooses to excise. Instead Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg‘s Golden Globe and Oscar nominated film focuses on the thrilling sense of adventure, the vastness of the ocean,...

Will a third Tron film finally deliver the box office success Disney has long hoped for?
So far, both the original Tron from 1982 and its 2010 sequel Tron: Legacy underperformed in theaters. While neither film turned a profit during their initial runs, both gained loyal fanbases through home video and later found renewed life on streaming platforms.
In the case of Legacy, its strong post-theatrical performance even inspired the creation of a high-profile E-ticket attraction at Magic Kingdom in Orlando.
Despite this long-tail success, it's safe to say Disney would much prefer a strong theatrical debut and immediate commercial returns rather than waiting years for a cult following to emerge.
What works in Tron: Ares' favor is its shift in focus. With a storyline centered on computer algorithms crossing into the real world, the film may rely less heavily on the fully computer-generated environment of the Grid.

Tron has always been a franchise that breaks new ground, with the technology utilised in 1982's Tron and 2010's Tron: Legacy pushing VFX to their limits upon release. Now, it's down to Tron: Ares to update the long-running sci-fi series for a very different world.
Talking to Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com), filmmaker Joachim Rønning said that Ilm is treating Tron: Ares like it's "the Holy Grail of computer graphics," and adds that they set out to "elevate" this world and take it "to the next level."
That included motion-controlled camera movements, designed as if the lens is operated by a machine rather than a man. "The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it’s shot by a robot," Rønning teased.
Original Tron creator Steven Lisberger was on hand to say, "Something comes out, and it’s too avant-garde at the time. And...

Tron: Ares star Jeff Bridges offers a cryptic new tease about how he returns in the upcoming film. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the third installment in the Tron franchise follows the events of the 2010 sequel. Though Bridges' Kevin Flynn seemingly died in that movie's climax, the actor is now set to play a role in the Tron: Ares story.
During a recent interview with Empire, Bridges is pressed for information about his return in the new movie, and the star only adds to the mystery. The actor teases that the digital universe of The Grid opens up plenty of opportunities, including allowing a piece of Flynn to have lived on:

When people think of advancements in special effects in Hollywood, they typically think of movies like 1933’s King Kong, Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, and James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, to name a few. However, old heads of Hollywood remember another film that helped change the visual game, Disney’s Tron. The Steven Lisberger-directed science-fiction adventure dazzled audiences with state-of-the-art digital effects, paving the way for VFX in film to show moviegoers things they’d never thought possible on the silver screen. Disney upped their game again in 2010 with Tron: Legacy, and soon, Joachim Rønning will level up the Tron Universe with Tron: Ares, coming to theaters on October 10, 2025.
The latest issue of Empire Magazine is pulling the curtain back on Tron: Ares with an in-depth discussion about filming techniques with the film’s director, Joachim Rønning. According to Rønning, Ilm (Industrial Light & Magic) treats Ares as “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.

“Tron: Ares” is taking its artificial intelligence plotline quite literally. In a new interview, director Joachim Rønning shared that he wanted certain scenes in the upcoming film to look as if they were shot by a computer program, rather than a person.
“Tron: Ares” is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise that began in 1982 with Jeff Bridges playing a video game programmer who becomes trapped in the digital world. The sequel “Tron: Legacy” was released in 2010 with Garret Hedlund playing Bridges’ onscreen son; Joseph Kosinski directed. Now, Rønning is taking the reins, with Bridges returning for the third film.
Rønning told Empire that he views the process of making “Tron: Ares” as the “the Holy Grail of computer graphics,” especially with the famed Grid becoming even more paramount to the plot. Jared Leto joins the franchise as the titular Ares, the manifestation of a sentient computer program that escapes into the real world.

The Tron series is back with a new movie called Tron: Ares, set to release in theaters on October 10, 2025. This film promises to take visual effects to a new level, continuing the franchise’s tradition of being ahead in technology. Director Joachim Rønning told Empire magazine that working on this project feels like chasing “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.”
One unique idea in the movie is how the camera work is done. Rønning explained, “The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it’s shot by a robot.” This means the scenes are captured as if a machine is recording other digital programs, giving the movie a fresh visual style.

The Tron franchise is getting a fresh new chapter with the upcoming film, Tron: Ares, set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025. This new movie promises to push the boundaries of visual effects once again, continuing the series’ tradition of leading-edge technology. Director Joachim Rønning shared with Empire magazine that working on Tron: Ares feels like chasing “the Holy Grail of computer graphics.”
He explained that the film will use innovative camera work that mimics how a machine would film, saying, “The concept was that a program is filming a program. So it’s shot by a robot.”
Tron has always been about imagining a digital world ahead of its time. The original 1982 film was a pioneer in visual effects, and Tron: Legacy in 2010 raised the bar even higher with its neon-lit digital universe called The Grid.
Now, Tron: Ares aims to bring this vision into a new era by mixing the virtual and real worlds.

Every time Tron comes to the screen, it reinvents itself. As revolutionary as the 1982 original was, 2010’s Tron: Legacy was a seismic shift forward in creating the binary world of the Grid. This year’s Tron: Ares is set to be another significant upgrade on the digital-world story. But all throughout Tron’s… well, legacy, one face has remained: Jeff Bridges. In the first film, he was legendary programmer Kevin Flynn (and briefly appeared as programme Clu); then in Legacy, he returned to the Grid as a much older Flynn, while a de-aged Bridges portrayed Clu 2.0, the film’s major villain. In Tron: Ares, Flynn returns once more – though how, exactly, remains a mystery.
That’s because both Flynn and Clu died in Tron: Legacy’s final act – or, at least, it looked like they did, with Flynn sacrificing himself to stop Clu entering the real world, in pursuit of...

Tron has always been ahead of the curve. That’s by design – if you’re presenting the story of a mega-advanced virtual world, you need to be at the cutting edge. The 1982 original was exactly that, pioneering visual effects in service of a tale that predated the rise of… well, everything that’s come since. Tron: Legacy took that to the next level in 2010, taking a quantum leap in its conception of ‘The Grid’ with wild neon visuals, and delivering one of the first legacy sequels long before Hollywood got hooked on them. Now, here comes Tron: Ares – a whole new evolution, set to propel audiences into a future they don’t realise they’re already hurtling towards.
