Ambie Awards Winners, Presenters Make Case for Truth and Facts
Image
The fifth Ambie Awards, honoring the best podcasts of the year, had a recurring theme throughout Monday’s ceremony: standing up for truth.

“I just want to put in a word for the facts,” This American Life host and producer Ira Glass said during his speech accepting the Governors Award for his and his show’s influence on the medium. “We’re in a war over facts, and we have to stand up for them.

Presenter Ronan Farrow made a similar case in handing out the award for best news podcast, which went to the kid-focused The Ten News. “If we want to live in a reality-based world … and want truth to survive,” Farrow said, support for the kind of journalism the nominees in the news category do, as well as local media, is essential.

The Ambies, which took place Monday evening at Chicago’s McCormick Place convention center, weren’t completely serious,...

‘Mid-Century Modern’ Cast, Creators Pay Tribute to Linda Lavin at Hulu Premiere: ‘The Spiritual Showrunner of Our Show’
Image
Linda Lavin’s final role on television will be in “Mid-Century Modern” this Friday, so her co-stars and the sitcom creators made sure to honor the late star at their Hulu premiere on Tuesday.

“Linda Lavin was the most joyous, gracious, amazing person that you’d ever want to meet. She worked from the age of 5 to 87 and went out blazing like the star she was,” Nathan Lee Graham told TheWrap. “She truly was a pro at everything. This woman did everything: she could play the piano; she could sing; she could act, comedy, drama equally as well. She was a light. I call her the spiritual showrunner of our show. She’s the glue, she keeps us going. She’s the puppetmaster, she’s doing all of this tonight. So, she’s here.”

The Tony Award winner and Emmy-nominated actress died in December at age 87 from complications of lung cancer before Season 1 had wrapped.

Smile 2's Opening Scene Explained: Joel's Return, Plan & What Happens
Image
Despite premiering two years after the first movie, Smile 2 picks up just a week after the events of Smile, and quickly shows how the franchise's horrific Entity traveled from Rose to Smile 2's protagonist, Skye Riley. The Smile movies are a recent horror franchise directed by relative newcomer, Parker Finn. So far, the movies have revolved around an invisible force called the Entity, which possesses unassuming victims and terrorizes them with visions of people smiling. Although Smile 2 follows some of the same beats as Smile, the movie successfully raises the stakes and expands the world of the franchise.

Though it would have been easy to make Smile 2 a completely separate story from the 2022 movie, the sequel includes various connections to the original film. These ties showcase how exactly the events of Smile lead into the events of Smile 2. The most obvious correlation between the movies is the opening scene,...

This Sequel's Success Could Accidentally Set a Dangerous Horror Movie Precedent

Quick Links Smile Needed a Sequel Smile 2 Raises the Stakes From the Original Smile 2 Improves Upon the Protagonist Some Horror Films are Perfect On Their Own

This article contains references to suicide and addiction.

Horror has always been a constant in fictional storytelling, and that will never change. The genre is the best vehicle for addressing societal issues. Get Out addresses concerns about race and Midsommar was a meditation on toxic relationships. But as Icarus has taught everyone, there is such a thing as flying too close to the sun.

Midsommar and Get Out work because they are self-contained stories with a beginning, middle, and end. A sequel to these films wouldn't add to the thesis of the original; it would take from it. That being said, there is room for sequels in the modern horror sphere. Sometimes certain films need follow-ups to tell a more concise story, like Smile 2.

Smile 2 Proves Skye Riley Must Return In Smile 3 & Shows How Naomi Scott Can Come Back
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Smile 2.Smile 2 has proven that Naomi Scott can and should return as Skye Riley in Smile 3. Fictional pop star Skye was introduced in the 2024 horror sequel, which also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ray Nicholson, Dylan Gelula, Ral Castillo, and Kyle Gallner. Gallner is the only actor from 2022's Smile to return in a major capacity in the new movie, reprising the role of original survivor Joel in a prologue the explores the tense moments leading up to the character's death.

While a third installment in the franchise has not yet been greenlit at the time of writing, the box office performance of the 2024 movie means that there is a strong chance of a continuation. While it is not showing signs of becoming a smash success at the level of the original movie, it has already grossed $90.1 million against its $28 million budget,...

‘Smile 2’ Creeps Up the 2024 Box Office Rankings, Toppling a Major Horror Rival
Parker Finn
Directed by Parker Finn, Smile 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2022 horror hit, has spooked its way to box office success since its release on October 18. This Halloween season, it’s become a must-watch for horror fans, racking up over $23 million domestically during its opening weekend and holding onto a top spot at theaters. While Venom: The Last Dance dominated the weekend, Smile 2 landed a strong second place, but it didn’t stop there. The film has recently passed one of its biggest horror competitors at the global box office, marking yet another victory in its climb up the rankings.

The defeated rival? M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap, a thriller about a serial killer who haunts a concert crowd, didn’t quite hit the mark with audiences. Trap pulled in $82 million, sitting at 43rd place among 2024’s top box-office earners, but Smile 2 has just leapfrogged it with an $84 million tally,...

‘Smile’ vs. ‘Smile 2’: Which Film Has the More Devastating Grin?
Image
Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Smile and Smile 2.

Trauma has always been a staple of the horror genre. In his classic (1977) novel The Shining, Stephen King wrote, “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.” No modern genre creator embodies the darker side of this aphorism like Parker Finn. The writer/director’s burgeoning Smile franchise brings suffering to life with an apparition that feeds on the pain we carry inside us. And unlike the more hopeful messages in modern trauma allegories, Finn’s monsters too often emerge victorious.

Smile follows Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), a psychiatrist who works long hours helping her patients to avoid addressing her own mental health. When Rose witnesses a particularly brutal suicide, she becomes the new target for a terrifying creature that delights in twisting her sense of reality. This cruel beast exacerbates...

How Smile 2 Connects to the Original: Does Joel Return?
Image
Smile 2 cracks its way into theaters in time for Halloween on October 18, 2024, continuing the unnerving supernatural curse introduced by writer/director Parker Finn in 2022. The original chiller followed Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon), a therapist increasingly tormented by a gaggle of grinning ghouls after witnessing a patient commit suicide. With nearly all the original cast members gone, Smile 2 shifts the focus to budding pop star Skye Riley (Naomi Scott).

Yet, beyond the returning writer/director and sinister premise, there is one more key connection between Smile and Smile 2. Understanding how the two films link together entails exploring the one character who reprises their role from the original and bridges the overarching narrative. Here's how Smile and Smile 2 connect as an official cinematic horror movie sequel.

Smile 2's Grossest Death Scene Feels Torn Straight From A Nasty Indie Horror Movie
Image
This article contains mild spoilers for "Smile 2."

As I write this article, the third installment of the gore-laden "Terrifier" series is obliterating the competition at the box office, a win for independent film, extreme horror, and non-studio-owned IP everywhere. Lifelong horror fans are no strangers to films with the same levels of ultraviolence and blood-soaked mania on glorious display, but these scenes are overwhelmingly found in independent or underground horror movies. This isn't to say that studio-backed horror films are incapable of bringing the pain, but even looking at something as notoriously grisly as the "Saw" series, the graphic depictions are stylized. Shots of dismembered limbs or meat being torn from the bone are interspersed between adventurous camera movement, cleverly spaced reactions to the carnage, and juuuuust enough of the gruesome goodies to throw the audience's imagination into overdrive. It's taking a page out of Alfred Hitchcock's handbook...

Smile, The Exorcist, and how far to push realism in horror
Image
As Smile 2 emerges in cinemas, we explore the 2022 original, its parallels with The Exorcist, and the impact of realism in horror.

How wide do you open the door? It’s a question that, whether they consciously think about it or not, all horror storytellers have to deal with at some point.

Most writers and filmmakers are content to crack open the door just a little, letting enough of our everyday, unpleasant reality in to unsettle us without making us too uncomfortable. Movies like Halloween and Scream deal with death and blood, but they have all the lasting impact of rollercoaster rides – they thrill the senses, they make us jump and cringe, but they don’t leave us disturbed for hours afterwards.

What happens when a filmmaker opens the door further than most? Take a look at the reaction to The Exorcist when it first appeared in cinemas in 1973. News...

In Smile 2, Scott plays Skye Riley, a pop singer who faces terrifying challenges as she prepares for a world tour. While Ray Nicholson’s involvement in such a high-profile project is thrilling, some critics wonder if he can truly shine, especially with Scott poised to deliver a performance that’s sure to steal the spotlight.

Needless to say, Jack Nicholson’s son will need to bring his A-game to shine alongside Scott in what’s sure to be a nail-biting experience.

Smile 2 Director Gives Major Update on Possible Sequels
Image
Just as Smile 2 diverged from the first film's smaller scale narrative by focusing on a pop star, the future of the franchise could go in many different directions. That is officially the case, according to director Parker Finn, who recently sat down with Screen Rant to tease the future of his IP. After the smash-hit success of the first film, Finn addresses the "exciting" prospect of doing more sequels down the line. His words:

"I do think that there are so many exciting places that Smile could go. For me, it's still always about wanting to do something thematically rich that's centered on character stories. I love where this film goes, and right now I'm excited for audiences to see Smile 2. Hopefully, if they embrace it, I think that there could be a really interesting future for Smile."

The first Smile film worked so well because it took a potentially silly concept seriously.

What The Smile Horror Movie Monster Looks Like In Real Life
Image
Parker Finn's 2022 horror film "Smile" has a novel premise and a monster that is difficult to describe. The film begins when the lead character, a therapist named Rose (Sosie Bacon), has a strange encounter with a student, Laura (Caitlin Stasey). Laura is in a panic, having spent several day beset by hallucinations. She has been seeing people she knows appearing out of nowhere and grinning at her fiendishly. She knows these people are, in fact, a singular shapeshifting demon of some kind, and it is encouraging her to die by suicide. Then, as she predicted, Laura also pastes on a bleak, intense smile, and slits her throat right in front of Rose.

Rose soon begins experiencing similar hallucinations, wherein people she knows appear in her mind's eye, all of them wearing a scary rictus. Rose soon discovers that the grinning entity is an ancient supernatural creature that feeds on trauma.

Reign: What Happened To Kenna? (& The Fates Of The Other Main Characters)
Image
When Reign aired its series finale on the CW, it answered the question of what happened to characters like Kenna (Caitlin Stasey), who didn't remain in Queen Mary's (Adelaide Kane) life. The most popular CW series have become known for their science fiction and fantasy stories, particularly the Arrowverse and staple series Supernatural. The network, however, has dabbled in the genre of historical fiction in the past with dramas like Reign. Inspired by the life of Mary, Queen Of Scots, the series combined real moments in history with soap-opera-like fiction to create a compelling tale of Mary's life in France to marry Francis (Toby Regbo) and rise to power.

Though Reign centered on the life of Queen Mary, there were a lot of characters important to her story unfolding in the series. The story might not have been entirely accurate for history buffs, but the depth of the characters meant...

Smile 2 teaser trailer was shown at CinemaCon
Image
Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!

Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

Dylan Gelula of Dream Scenario and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt joins the cast of Smile 2

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. Smile 2: Rosemarie DeWitt and Kyle Gallner sign on for horror sequel

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Why Smile 2 Is a Bad Idea
Image
Knowing the identity of the monster in Smile takes away the fear of the unknown and eliminates the element of mystery that made the original film intriguing. We already know how it targets and terrorizes its victims. The story of Smile concluded satisfactorily with the death of Rose, and there is no dire need to continue the story with a sequel. Leaving it as a one-shot would have been enough to avoid potential burnout. The concept of Smile works better as a standalone film rather than a sequel or franchise. The curse and its origins were already revealed in the first movie, leaving little room for development in future installments. A sequel would likely be repetitive without adding meaningful new information.

After the resounding success of Parker Finn's Smile, the psychological horror will be getting a sequel in October 2024. The It Follows copycat revolves around Dr. Rose Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon,...
