Schmigadoon! season 2 sees familiar faces differently as they leave the musicals of the Golden Age to parody musicals of the 1960s and 1970s in Schmicago. Apple TV+'s Schmigadoon! season 2 begins with Josh and Melissa returning to Schmigadoon, only to find that it’s very different from the place they had previously visited. With the exception of the two leads, almost every actor is playing a different character to match the new setting and time period in Schmigadoon! season 2.

The Schmigadoon! season 1 finale seemed to provide Josh and Melissa with their happy ending, but after falling back into their daily routines and needing some change, they decided to return to the magical musical land. Today at the 2023 Winter Television Critics Association press tour, Apple TV+ showcased a first look at the highly anticipated, second season of “Schmigadoon!,” the Emmy and AFI Award-winning, hit musical comedy series from co-creator Cinco Paul. “Schmigadoon!” will return for season two with all new original songs and guest stars on Friday, April 7, with the first two episodes of its six episode second season, followed by new episodes every Friday through May 5, 2023.

When Lorne Michaels first heard the pitch for “Schmigadoon!,” the comedic love letter to the Golden Age musicals of the 1940s and 50s, he didn’t have to look far for his leading lady – he offered it to “Saturday Night Live” star Cecily Strong. Asked why, Michaels simply states: “I didn’t think of anyone else.”

Having seen the show, the first season of which premiered last year on Apple TV Plus, it’s obvious why Strong was the right match for Melissa Gimble, a New York City doctor who finds herself and boyfriend Josh Skinner (Keegan-Michael Key) trapped in a mystical land, only able to leave when they find true love. But, Michaels elaborates, “I knew she would get the ways in which it’s moving and complex but also understand that cartoon reality. And I knew she would make us care about this relationship.”

The series stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a couple named Melissa Gimble and Josh Skinner, two doctors from New york who go on a backpacking trip when their relationship hits a rough patch and find themselves lost in the town of Schmigadoon — where life is a 1940s-50s musical with songs and characters inspired by “Oklahoma!” and “The Music Man,” among others. They can only escape after they find true love, whether that’s with each other or someone else.

After they do find true love, Season 2 finds Josh and Melissa in Schmicago, the world of 60’s and 70’s musicals.

Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!” broke onto the scene in July and instantly endeared itself to audiences. The musical-comedy stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a New York couple going through relationship pains, so they trek through the woods and wind up in the magical town of Schmigadoon where everyone sings and dances. The six-episode series, created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, takes its inspiration from the classic Broadway musical “Brigadoon.” In all, 13 cast members are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards (see below).

Apple TV+ released a first look at forthcoming seres, Schmigadoon!, as cast and creatives behind the musical comedy were present at today’s winter TCA virtual Q&a session to talk about the new series, a parody of iconic musicals, which will debut in the summer.

“It is a love letter to golden age musicals from start to finish,” declared creator, showrunner, and executive producer Cinco Paul, accompanied by EP and director Barry Sonnenfeld as well as star and producer Cecily Strong, who plays Melissa Gimble, and Keegan-Michael Key, who also stars as Josh Skinner.

Written by Despicable Me duo Paul and Ken Daurio, Schmigadoon! follows a couple who on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover a magical town in which everyone acts as if they’re in a musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.
