If you enjoyed the furry animated drama “Hayop Ka!” (2020) on Netflix last year, you've got to watch director Avid Liongoren's first feature, “Saving Sally” (2016). The Road opened in cities across the country today as part of its limited theatrical release and is now available on a variety of on-demand services. During a recent talk with director Yam Laranas, I learned about the evolution of this film from a single story idea, scaring child actors, and his next project:

When did you first start working on The Road and what was your inspiration for the story?

Yam Laranas: I started in 2005 and was dabbling with the idea of creating a claustrophobic film that wasn’t happening in a haunted house. So I thought about how scary it is to be lost on a dark road, not knowing where to go. I remember being lost on a dark road during a road trip and you feel trapped.

What changed since your original idea from 2005?

World Exclusive: Filipino director Yam Laranas (Sigaw, The Echo) is officially back with his newest indie project, The Road, a top secret supernatural horror film we've been teasing for a few months now. Not only do we finally have some plot details, but we've scored an exclusive look at the haunting first official trailer! "A twelve year old cold case is reopened when three teens are missing in an abandoned road. In the course of the investigation, deeper and gruesome stories of abduction and murders are discovered. After more than two decades, the secrets of the haunted road may finally be revealed." The film features music and Soundcscapes by Johan Söderqvist (Let The Right One In). Carmina Villarroel, Marvin, Agustin, Tj Trinidad, Rhian Ramos and Barbie Forteza all star.

Not much is known about director Yam Laranas’ The Road as of late, but the director has sent over the first teaser poster as a Killer Film exclusive as well as confirming to us that Johan Söderqvist, who scored Let the Right One In, will score The Road. The Philippine director impressed the genre crowd with his The Echo, and now he’s back with the mysterious The Road.

According to writer-director Alvin Yapan, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe (The Rapture of Fe) is a "poetic and allegorical narrative of a woman's will to survive in an oppressive environment. The woman here, the titular Fe (masterfully played by Irma Adlawan), is an overseas worker, repatriated by the bleak global economy, and is welcomed home by Dante (Noni Buencamino), her violent and barren husband, and Arturo (Tj Trinidad), her young lover who manages the basket factory that employs her and her husband. Amidst the abuses of her husband and the amorous declarations of her young lover, Fe would regularly receive a basket full of fruits from a mysterious suitor. Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”: After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself.
