You Animal! (2020)
Movie of the Week #36: Grace Han picks Saving Sally (2016) by Avid Liongoren
You Animal! (2020)
If you enjoyed the furry animated drama “Hayop Ka!” (2020) on Netflix last year, you've got to watch director Avid Liongoren's first feature, “Saving Sally” (2016). There is a level of blood, sweat, and tears that Liongoren poured into “Saving Sally” that just doesn't appear in his follow-up feature. This comic book-themed live-action romance apparently took twelve years to finish, which – considering the sheer craftsmanship of the production, makes sense. In an unabashed mix of traditional animation, stop motion, pop-up book, CGI, and live-action acting, Liongoren stirs in as many elements of the moving image into his concoction of a basic romance-drama – making for a sweet cocktail of visual delight in a feel-good story.

In fact, it's hard to describe “Saving Sally” as a “film.” It's more like a transmedia epic. The premise is simple: meek comic-strip artist, Marty (Enzo Marcos) seeks to win over his best friend and damsel-in-distress, the...

Exclusive Interview: Director Yam Laranas talks The Road
The Road opened in cities across the country today as part of its limited theatrical release and is now available on a variety of on-demand services. During a recent talk with director Yam Laranas, I learned about the evolution of this film from a single story idea, scaring child actors, and his next project:

When did you first start working on The Road and what was your inspiration for the story?

Yam Laranas: I started in 2005 and was dabbling with the idea of creating a claustrophobic film that wasn’t happening in a haunted house. So I thought about how scary it is to be lost on a dark road, not knowing where to go. I remember being lost on a dark road during a road trip and you feel trapped.

What changed since your original idea from 2005?

Yam Laranas: When I started writing, I only wrote about...

Deadline (The Reign Of Impunity) Review
In the morning of November 23, 2009, a local politician who was on his way to town to file his certificate of candidacy for the upcoming elections, his family, his supporters, lawyers, and several journalists were ambushed and cruelly murdered. The massacre, more popularly referred to as the Ampatuan Massacre not only because it happened in the town of Ampatuan but because the suspected perpetrators bear the same name, became the much-needed signal that would alert the public of the systematic murder of journalists, a practice that has long gone unnoticed. Joel Lamangan's Deadline (Reign of Impunity) clearly takes its cue from these recent events that shocked the Philippines.   Ross Rivera (Tj Trinidad), a writer whose cynicism has converted him into a government...

Tioseco-Bohinc Film Series: The Rapture Of Fe Review
According to writer-director Alvin Yapan, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe (The Rapture of Fe) is a "poetic and allegorical narrative of a woman's will to survive in an oppressive environment. The woman here, the titular Fe (masterfully played by Irma Adlawan), is an overseas worker, repatriated by the bleak global economy, and is welcomed home by Dante (Noni Buencamino), her violent and barren husband, and Arturo (Tj Trinidad), her young lover who manages the basket factory that employs her and her husband. Amidst the abuses of her husband and the amorous declarations of her young lover, Fe would regularly receive a basket full of fruits from a mysterious suitor. Dante is unable to provide for her economically, while Arturo is unable to abandon both his paralytic father (Jerry Respeto) and the basket factory. Trapped in between two inutile men, Fe is reduced to desperation to the point of making a drastic...

Yam Laranas’ Patient X Attacks with a Trailer and Poster
Filipino director Yam Laranas did such a bang-up good job with his 2004 horror movie “Sigaw”, that he repeated the process on 2008’s “The Echo”, an English-language remake of “Sigaw” that went straight to DVD. Laranas is back with a new horror movie called “Patient X”, which has the makings of an effective “last stand in a haunted house” type, which is always something I’m down for. Trailer and poster for the movie via Bloody-Disgusting below. Here’s the not-all-that-coherent plot synopsis for “Patient X”: After twenty years, local police captures the murderer of the older brother of a young boy. Now a doctor, he must go back to his old town and face the murderers himself. He then discovers that the murderers are Aswangs (folkloric Filipino vampire-like creatures) and they pose a deadly threat not only to him but also for the entire town. Starring Richard Gutierrez, Cristine Reyes,...
