After Christopher Lee, Another Nonagenarian British Actor Has Died: Oscar Nominee Moody
Ron Moody in 'Oliver!' movie. Ron Moody: 'Oliver!' actor nominated for an Oscar dead at 91 (Note: This Ron Moody article is currently being revised.) Two well-regarded, nonagenarian British performers have died in the last few days: 93-year-old Christopher Lee (June 7, '15), best known for his many portrayals of Dracula and assorted movie villains and weirdos, from the title role in The Mummy to Dr. Catheter in Gremlins 2: The New Batch. 91-year-old Ron Moody (yesterday, June 11), among whose infrequent film appearances was the role of Fagin, the grotesque adult leader of a gang of boy petty thieves, in the 1968 Best Picture Academy Award-winning musical Oliver!, which also earned him a Best Actor nomination. Having been featured in nearly 200 movies and, most importantly, having had his mainstream appeal resurrected by way of the villainous Saruman in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies (and various associated merchandising,...

Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves in House of Fools (2014)
'Rake': The Battle of Making the Anti-Hero Triumph on Network TV
Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves in House of Fools (2014)
The anti-hero has dominated cable television for almost a decade now, and is one of the main reasons it has begun to lure away ratings from the networks. It allows for provocative and visceral television with almost a cinematic flare with protagonists that are complicated and deep. It has given us some of the most memorable and unapologetic characters in television history with the likes of Tony Soprano, Detective Vic Mackey, Jax Teller, Nancy Botwin, Don Draper, and Walter White.

Network television has tried to find their own heroes with a dark side, and they've delivered characters like Gregory House and Jack Bauer. It has always felt like they've remained on the surface level of the dark side and never fully been willing to plunge into the murky depths. In the case of a show like 24 that made sense, because in the end, we still wanted Jack to be our action hero.

Celebrity Super Spa: Is it the most desperate reality show ever?
Fancy watching some poor punter getting a back, sack and crack from Rustie Lee? Want a waxing from Helen Flanagan? Is Arg from Towie delivering pedicures what you've been waiting for all these years? Well, wait no more people. Celebrity Super Spa has arrived.

I've already had the joy of watching episode one of Super Spa. I've seen the awkward and cringeworthy hosts. I've seen Helen Flanagan prancing around without any trousers on. I've seen Rustie Lee cackling. 867 times.

And I'll probably watch it all over again tonight (September 13) when it airs on Channel 5. Firstly, because I'm a glutton for terrible television. Secondly, because I'm fairly convinced it may be the most desperate celebrity reality show ever concieved. Even by Channel 5's late night standards, this is awful. It makes The Bachelor look like The Sopranos.

So where does the show fit in the history of degrading and embarrassing celebrity reality shows?...

"As far as I know, and according to Bruce Campbell's commentary, this film was never actually (or at least widely) released in movie theaters," Romano tells us. "We all caught up with this on tape and on cable, back in the 1980s. I still have my VHS copy, which I've watched at least 20-30 times over the years, it being one of my very favorite Raimi Movies. I'm the guy who can literally quote chapter and verse from the dialogue. You need to know this about me because today I watched the Shout! Factory Blu-ray edition for the first time, and it turns...

Sienna Miller joins Foxcatcher with Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo & Channing Tatum
Bennett Miller, the Oscar-nominated director behind Moneyball, is firming up the cast for his next feature, Foxcatcher, which is set to be a fascinating film for all involved.

Steve Carell, Channing Tatum, and Mark Ruffalo have all come on board since last autumn, and now Deadline report that Sienna Miller has been cast in the drama, based on a tragic true story.

Carell stars as paranoid schizophrenic, John duPont, a multimillionaire and member of the notable du Pont family, who shot and killed his long-time friend and Olympic champion wrestler, Dave Schultz (Ruffalo).

Tatum is set to star as Schultz’s brother, Mark, with Sienna Miller now joining the cast as Ruffalo’s wife, Nancy.

Miller is directing from a script co-written by past collaborator Dan Futterman (Capote) and E. Max Frye (Band of Brothers), and the director will be producing alongside the increasingly, exponentially influential Megan Ellison (Lawless, The Master...

Steve Carell Will Ruin Sienna Miller’s Life in ‘Foxcatcher’
Director Bennett Miller‘s passion project follow-up to his smash hit Moneyball continues to take shape with the protracted roll-out of his final casting decisions. Deadline Hollywood reports that Sienna Miller is now set to play Nancy Schultz in Foxcatcher, based on the wrenching and bizarre story of the murder of Olympic wrestler (and Nancy’s husband) Dave Schultz. Mark Ruffalo has been attached to the Schultz role since April, along with the rest of an impressive cast that also includes Steve Carell and Channing Tatum. Miller has been trying to get the film made for years, so it’s heartening that he’s finally been able to compile such a talented line-up to tell the tale of the tragically murdered Schultz. And what a tale it is. The film tells the true story of John du Pont (Carell), the heir to the du Pont fortune who, as a huge supporter of amateur sports and USA Wrestling...

Sienna Miller Joins Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher
Model-turned-actress Sienna Miller (Tippi Hedren in upcoming BBC2 drama The Girl) has jumped onboard Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher, insane real-life wrestling drama, which stars Steve Carell as the mentally disturbed heir Jon DuPont.

Mr. du Pont was found guilty in 1997 of the shooting death of an Olympic champion freestyle wrestler, Dave Schultz. Mark Ruffalo will play Olympic grappler Schultz who was killed on the sprawling du Pont property in the Philadelphia suburb of Newtown Square, where the wrestler lived with his family while he was training for the Atlanta Olympics.

Miller will play his wife, Nancy while Channing Tatum is playing Schultz’s brother, Mark.

Scribed by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman (Capote) the story centers on a stamp-collecting, bird-watching multimillionaire and paranoid schizophrenic who built a wrestling training facility, Team Foxcatcher, on his 800-acre Pennsylvania estate and ended up shooting and killing his friend in front of Schultz...

Casting Roundup: Mulligan, Roth and Waltz Get the Gigs
The "Shame" gal goes bad, a Reservoir Dog becomes royalty and "August: Osage County" gets even bigger as we look at the past week's casting activity.

Carey Mulligan will soon be channeling Nicole Kidman in "To Die For" as she signs on to play a femme fatale in the dark crime comedy, "Nancy and Danny," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The "Drive" beauty will star as a money-hungry woman who, after her big-city dreams go up in smoke, engages in a get-rich-quick scheme in order to land an old high school crush. Things probably go quite awry.

Speaking of Nicole Kidman, Variety reports that Tim Roth is set to join her in the rather bizarre true-life tale, "Grace of Monacco." The film follows Oscar winner Grace Kelly and her husband, Monaco's Prince Rainier III (Roth), who is charged by French leader Charles de Gaulle to reform Monaco's tax laws in six months' time.

Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds (2005)
Which 'Weeds' Guest Stars Will Return?
Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds (2005)
The final episodes of "Weeds" will be a blast from the past. At the show's panel at the 2012 Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, "Weeds" creator Jenji Kohan promised a multitude of guest appearances from familiar faces as the pot comedy comes down the home stretch of its last season.

Still, Kohan kept the identities of the returning guest stars vague. "We wanted to bring everyone we could back, and everyone who said yes we brought back," she said, according to TV Guide Magazine.

One former star who probably won't be back on the show is Elisabeth Perkins, who played Nancy's frenemy Celia Hodes. She recently told Deadline she wouldn't be returning to "Weeds" for its final run. "No, they can't afford me anymore ... No, it wasn't really up to me anyway," she quipped.

Season 7 has already brought back Heylia James, Dean Hoades, and shooter Tim Scottson. Could Conrad...

So this past weekend I managed to sneak away for the start of some badly needed (and much delayed) R&R until May box office begins. I don’t care what Hollywood people do while I’m gone: just be sure to tell Mike, Nellie, David, Pete, Nancy, Patrick, and Kinsey about it. I’ll finish some updates tonight. Question is, after that, can I go more than a few days without posting? Gonna try.

Episode Recap: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - 12.01: "73 Seconds"
An unexplained series of events occur on a Vegas tram; unexplained until the CSIs are on the case, that is. Nick (George Eads) returns from Hawaii after a seminar to find the joke's on him. The new boss, Db Russell (Ted Danson) lies on the tram floor and Nick thinks he's just a Db, which he is. Db by name, but not a real Db! Nick's reaction to his name, his initials is exactly what I thought when it was revealed who Ted was going to play in the show. Db as many know stands for 'dead body.' The others can only laugh and disappear. Nick isn't too happy to be the butt of their joke and he and Db don't really seem to hit it off - not like Nick and Ray (Laurence Fishburne). Two people were killed on the tram and three were injured. One Vic, Tom (Nathan Anderson) was stabbed.

‘Man of Steel’ Villainess Antje Traue Joins ‘Seventh Son’; Vincent D’Onofrio and Jeffrey Dean Morgan Board ‘Supreme Ruler’
Although Antje Traue won’t be able to show American audiences her acting chops for another sixteen months or so, Variety informs us that the German actress has already racked up a post-Man of Steel role for herself. As they report, Traue will come on board The Seventh Son, which sees Mongol helmer Sergey Bodrov directing Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander, and Kit Harington in a dark fantasy tale filled with witches, wizards, and other things in that mystical tone.

Specifics — or, for that matter, general information — on Traue‘s character are not to be found in the Variety story. Here’s Amazon‘s synopsis of Joseph Delaney‘s novel upon which the film is based, for whatever compensation that may end up being:

“When 12-year-old Thomas, seventh son of a seventh son, is apprenticed to the local Spook, whose job is to fight evil spirits and witches,...

Exclusive Interview – Peter Serafinowicz
Peter Serafinowicz, found talking about movies each week as the host of Orange’s Film Night Live, is a towering colossus of comedy. Huge on Twitter (follow him here, and for that matter, us here!) and somehow even bigger in real life, he has appeared in films, British and American sitcoms and had his own sketch show. He’s something of cult hero, with his brand of silliness and anti-humour standing out from some of today’s more mainstream comedy.

I find Peter sitting at a table in a Notting Hill cafe, and proceed to interrupt his lunch for the following half an hour with inane questions. I greet him with a polite “hebbo” (the greeting of his and Robert Popper’s religion, Tarvuism) and jump right in.

———————-

HeyUGuys: You’re co-creator of a religion – what does the future hold for Tarvuism?

Peter: Robert Popper and I would really...

Martin Scorsese Finds Another Project: The Love Affair Between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
When Elizabeth Taylor passed away in March, I assumed that a bidding war would erupt over some of the key stories in her life. As it happened, pursuit of one of those tales took a couple months, and now Paramount has ended up with the rights. I'm talking specifically about the passionate affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, which has been part of classic Hollywood legend for decades after blossoming on the set of Cleopatra in the early '60s and extending through two marriages into 1976. The book Furious Love, by Sam Kashner and Nancy Schenberger, recounts the affair, and the studio plans to develop it as a directorial project for Martin Scorsese. Deadline [1] has the news. Martin Scorsese, of course, is one of the most enthusiastic Hollywood historians around. His interest in the story makes perfect sense, and is in fact one of the factors that elevates this...

Kate Middleton & Prince William Heading To Hollywood: You’ll Never Guess Who They’re Staying With!
The newlyweds will leave London behind to check out the glitz and glamour of the West Coast!

Kate Middleton and Prince William are headed for sunny skies — the newlyweds plan to go to La for two days in early July, and according to Deadline.com, a new report says they may be staying with some of Hollywood’s elite. And here’s a hint: that couple once lived across the pond, too.

The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will reportedly be staying with their good friends and Royal Wedding guests David and Victoria Beckham! The only details as of now — after the royal couple’s first official tour to Canada in late June and early July, aides have penciled in a West Coast stop.

It’s not unheard of for the Royals to head to Hollywood. In 1985, William’s mom Princess Diana made her first U.S. visit — and included some time in Hollywood.

Robin McLeavy Will Play Abe's Mom In Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Back in the early years of the aughts, James Franco was one of the actors that auditioned for the role of Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's first film version of the character. The role, of course, eventually went to Tobey Maguire, but Raimi liked Franco so much that he decided to cast him as Harry Osborne, a vital role in the Spidey universe. It's something that Robin McLeavy can think about while watching Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Deadline reports that the Australian actress, after originally being in the running for the part of Mary Todd Lincoln, has signed on to play Nancy Hanks Lincoln, Abe's mother. A much smaller role than that of Abe's wife, Nancy is killed by a vampire early in the film, which leads our 16th president to go to war against all bloodsuckers. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, the film also stars Benjamin Walker as Abraham, Mary Elizabeth...

R.I.P. Betty Garrett (1919-2011)
I was saddened to learn this morning that Betty Garrett, the great star of stage, screen, and TV, passed away yesterday at the age of 94 after suffering an aortic aneurysm.

Garrett was one of those rare people — like, say, Jack Valenti — who happened to be a witness to and/or participant in a remarkably high number of historic events of the 20th century. She was a member of Orson Welles’s famed Mercury Theatre company, and was with him on the night that he shook up America with his infamous radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds” (1938); she was Frank Sinatra’s leading lady in two of the earliest great M-g-m musical-comedies, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” (1949) and “On the Town” (1949); her career was greatly hurt by the Hollywood Red Scare after her husband, the Oscar nominated actor Larry Parks, refused to name names before the House Committee...

Debbie Reynolds Returns To Movies To Play Katherine Heigl's Grandmother
Betty White has been getting all the attention lately as the feisty old lady we all love, but you know who is also old and awesome? Debbie Reynolds. The star of Singin' in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown hasn't been in a feature film since 1998, but apparently she's still willing to go up on the screen once and a while, and it's Katherine Heigl, of all people, who has convinced her to make a comeback. According to Deadline Reynolds will be playing the role of outspoken Grandma Mazur in One for the Money, an adaptation of one of Janet Evanovich's many books starring the amateur bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Heigl is playing Plum, of course, and is executive producing alongside her mom Nancy. Heigl said of Reynolds, "Grandma Mazur is such a great character.
