‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 gets epic teaser trailer featuring Linda Hamilton: What to know about the final season
Image
"I need you to fight one last time."

Netflix released the first trailer for Stranger Things 5, the fifth and final season of its massively popular '80s-set sci-fi adventure series. The teaser previews an epic battle between the Hawkins crew and the sinister interdimensional being Vecna. The story that began way back in 2016 has been building to this.

The trailer features a lot of exciting imagery without giving away a lot of plot details. The trailer starts with Steve Harrington inside of a van with a satellite dish on top outside of a radio station, and throughout the trailer, he's cranking the volume up on whatever he's broadcasting up to 1000 decibels. Over the radio, we hear Dustin Henderson counting down to the start of a "burn" — creatures from the Upside Down hate fire — while everyone else waits anxiously. Something big is about to happen. The trailer also features our first...

First ‘Stranger Things 5’ Teaser Trailer Promises All-Out War in Hawkins
Image
“Stranger Things 5” draws near.

The conclusion to Netflix’s flagship series is being released in three sections across the holidays – on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve – and the streaming service has just released a teaser trailer for the grand finale. And it’s a doozy. Watch it above.

The trailer starts with the gang at Wsqk 94.5 FM, a radio station that, based on set photos released during production, has a significant importance in this season. “Burn commencing,” Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) says over the airwaves. (Maybe this is the way the group is communicating one another since the apocalyptic finale?) Then the music cue starts – a pumped up, orchestral version of Deep Purple’s “Child in Time” (a single back in 1970). This is keeping with excellent music choices for “Stranger Things” spots – remember the Comic-Con trailer for season 2 that used Michael Jackson’s “Thriller?” – and it works like a charm here.

10 Most Intense Nen Battles in Hunter X Hunter, Ranked
Image
Although not introduced until the third arc of the series, Nen battles are the most common form of combat in Hunter X Hunter. Similarly to Stand Battles in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, these exciting fights feature characters with highly specific abilities attempting to out-think and counter their opponent, making intelligence as important as strength. Combined with the powerful character drama the series is known for, nearly every major Nen battle is unforgettable.

Nen is the most creative power system in Shōnen anime, and the most intense fights in Hunter X Hunter push it to its limits. The quality of a Nen battle is primarily based around the types of abilities the combatants possess, how they use them, and how they implement advanced Nen techniques. The most tense Nen battles not only shine in this area, but feature the highest and most personal stakes, and the most dangerous fighters in the series.

Image
More than half a century after the release of the last MC5 album, 1971’s High Time, a new album masterminded by the group’s guitarist Wayne Kramer, who died in February, will come out this fall. The record, Heavy Lifting, includes two songs that feature original MC5 drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson, who died in May, alongside guest appearances by Slash, Tom Morello, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, and Don Was, among others.

The new single, “Can’t Be Found,” begins with a muscular bass line that leads a typically powerful guitar riff.

Does Green Day’s New Song “One Eyed Bastard” Rip Off P!Nk?
Image
Whether intentional or not, Green Day’s new single “One Eyed Bastard” sounds an awful lot like P!Nk’s 2008 breakup anthem “So What.”

The opening guitar riff of “One Eyed Bastard” features a similar melody to the synth-driven “na-na-na” intro of “So What.” The riff appears throughout the track, which otherwise features lyrics motivated by revenge: “I’m making an offer that you cannot deny/ You won’t be laughing when I’m making you cry.”

It’s worth noting that “So What” shares similarities of its own with hard rock pioneer Deep Purple’s 1970 song “Black Night.”

To hear Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong tell it, however, his inspiration came from an entirely different source. “‘One Eyed Bastard’ started off as just a riff that I had — a shuffle, almost like a Black Sabbath kind of riff,” he said in a statement. “Lyrically, I was just reflecting on bad times in life.

The Creator Movie Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When It Plays In The Movie
Image
"The Creator" is a gripping sci-fi film that explores the positive side of Artificial Intelligence in contrast to the usual dangers portrayed in the genre. The movie successfully evokes empathy for its AI characters, particularly the secondary protagonist, Alphie. The immersive songs featured in the film enhance the viewer's cinematic experience, adding emotional depth to both action sequences and poignant moments.

In its 133-minute runtime, The Creator not only walks through a gripping sci-fi saga but also features several compelling songs that enhance the impact of its futuristic drama. Directed by Gareth Edwards, The Creator offers a unique take on Artificial Intelligence and its relationship with humanity in the future. Unlike many sci-fi films that give viewers a glimpse of the dangers of AI, The Creator tries to portray Artificial Intelligence in a positive light.

Despite its offbeat approach towards a common sci-fi theme, the film succeeds at making audiences empathize with its AI characters,...

How the High School Film Has Changed Since Dazed and Confused
Image
As long as there have been movies and high schools, there have been high school movies. They have changed with time, but each cements themselves in the culture of their era.

No film in modern cinema has done this quite as well as Dazed and Confused. That being said, this beloved film would be a bit different today. But how does it actually compare with the teen high school comedies we’re seeing now?

Dazed and Confused

Dazed and Confused was directed by Richard Linklater (the Before trilogy) and released in 1993. It takes place in 1976 and follows a group of high schoolers on their last day of school.

The characters range from the cool kids to the nerds, the incoming freshmen to the outgoing seniors. It is a who’s who of young actors who would go on to a slew of well-known projects. These include but are definitely not limited to,...

Metallica’s Lars Ulrich on Pantera Reunion: Having Charlie Benante on Drums Is “Great”
Image
Metallica will be embarking on their 2023-2024 world tour next month, and one of the bands supporting their North American legs is the recently reunited Pantera. While Pantera’s return has been met with some backlash, Metallica stickman Lars Ulrich thinks they have the right guy behind the drum kit.

Pantera are touring with classic members Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with guitarist Zakk Wylde and Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. The latter two are filling in for late brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul, respectively. While the band has insisted that the reunion is a celebration of the legacies of Dime and Vinnie, some fans consider calling the band “Pantera” without the two brothers sacrilegious.

Metallica’s “M72 World Tour” hits North America this summer and fall, and again in the summer of 2024. Pantera will be providing support on the first of two shows in each city, with tickets available here.

Eight details in the second Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer could easily have gone unnoticed. Watch the Who Stun Fans in Long Island With Rare ‘Young Man’s Blues’

The Who have been playing shows with orchestral musicians for the past three and a half years, and every single night has wrapped up with “Baba O’Riley.” But Friday evening at the Ubs Arena in Elmont, Long Island, they stunned their fans by remaining on the stage and ripping into “Young Man’s Blues” as an extra encore. They hadn’t played the song since a one-off in 2014, and have only done it six other times in the past 40 years.

Margot Robbie in I, Tonya (2017)
How Cruella Got That Crazy Expensive Soundtrack
Margot Robbie in I, Tonya (2017)
Just like his previous movie, I, Tonya, director Craig Gillespie’s new interpretation of Cruella and the 101 Dalmatians mythos treats its soundtrack almost like a character—a Greek chorus of sorts. The origin story of the designer villainess who first was introduced to the world in the classic One Hundred and One Dalmatians is peppered with a non-stop river of classic pop, rock, and punk anthems from the 1960s and ‘70s, quite fitting for the chaotic backdrop of London’s fast-changing fashion and music scene of that era.

Gillespie says that the way the soundtrack was used in I, Tonya was an element that Sean Bailey, Disney president of production, wanted to deploy in similar fashion for Cruella.

“When Sean pitched it to me, he talked about the tracks from I, Tonya and how they wanted to really embrace music with this,” Gillespie explains. “So I warned them up front...

Beach Slang Recruit the Replacements’ Tommy Stinson for New LP
Tommy Stinson
Beach Slang recruited former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson for their new LP, The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City, out January 10th via Bridge Nine Records.

The indie rock band previewed the album with thunderous lead single “Bam Rang Rang,” a torrent of power chord fuzz, bent-note guitar leads and the ragged snarl of frontman James Alex.

The track opens in glam-punk territory; after a false ending ushers in a wall of feedback, Alex leads the band through a cowbell-heavy hard rock section that conjures a hybrid of Mountain’s “Mississippi...

Listen to the Soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’
As much of an event as a new Quentin Tarantino film is also the arrival of a new soundtrack for said film. When it comes to his latest, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, it’s also one of his most well-curated albums. Immersing us deep into the 1960s, it features famous tracks from Deep Purple, Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Seger, and more, as well as a few advertisements that are heard on the radio in the film and radio-friendly transitions to boot.

There are also three songs featured prominently in the trailers: Los Bravos’ Bring a Little Lovin’, Paul Revere & The Raiders’ Good Thing, and Neil Diamond’s Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show. One song in a trailer not on the soundtrack is The Mama’s and the Papa’s’ Straight Shooter, which we’ve included below. As far as my favorite track used in the film, it has...

See Black Sabbath-Approved Cover Song by Armenian Folk Musicians
Black Sabbath’s songs have been covered many different ways — by soul singers, jazz combos and even a fast-food-themed parody band. But it still must have been a surprise for Tony Iommi and onetime Sabbath singer Ian Gillan (best known as the frontman for Deep Purple) when the Armenian ensemble the Naregatsi Orchestra presented them with a cover of the Technical Ecstasy deep cut “She’s Gone” at a special concert in Yerevan today. The ensemble, dressed in traditional garb, played the song on traditional instruments including the dulcimer-like qanun,...

Flashback: Pink Floyd, Queen, Black Sabbath Members Rock for Armenia in 1989
When an earthquake decimated parts of Armenia and killing between 25,000 to 50,000 people in 1988, the world was in shock. The Ussr earmarked the equivalent of billions of dollars to help rebuild, the U.S. sent medical aid and search dogs, and people from all over Europe came to help. Perhaps the most surprising fundraising effort, though, came from a who’s who of rock and metal legends calling themselves Rock Aid Armenia. The supergroup, which featured Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Queen’s Brian May and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi,...

John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in The Wall (2017)
Legendary Pink Floyd Producer Tunes Up Kids Programming With Wow! Unlimited Media
John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in The Wall (2017)
Bob Ezrin, the legendary rock producer who helped shape the sound of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, is partnering with Wow! Unlimited Media to create a slate of music-infused kids programming, including a series inspired by the ingenuity and music of Les Paul, the fret-master whose namesake electric guitar has been a beloved brand in the music world since the Truman administration.

Ezrin is famed for his envelope-pushing studio work alongside the likes of Lou Reed, Alice Cooper, Nine Inch Nails, U2, Peter Gabriel, Jane’s Addiction, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Rod Stewart, and Kiss, to name just a few from a career discography that dates back to 1970 and his earliest work with Cooper. That pedigree make the Canadian music maven a unique creative asset as a partner, according to Wow Unlimited CEO Michael Hirsh.

“Wow! Unlimited Media aims to be one of the world’s leading producers of entertaining and educationally empowering kids programming,...

With their latest documentary, Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge, directors Alex Gibney and Blair Foster stitch together old performance footage, recordings from interviews with artists (Ice-t) and Presidents (Bill Clinton), and readings from some of the magazine's most important stories, with the likes of Johnny Depp subbing in for Hunter S. A Gentle Giant in Captivity - An Interview with Derek Schulman
Recently, Dusty provided me a golden opportunity: in connection with the release of Three-Piece Suite -- a remastering of some compositions from Gentle Giant's first three albums -- their media team offered an interview with Derek Schulman, lead singer for the group, and now a high-level record company executive. Knowing my love of Gentle Giant, Dusty offered the interview to me. There was no constraint on content, only on the number of questions (an even dozen). So, with thanks to Anne Leighton (of Anne Leighton Media), who coordinated, here is my interview with one of progressive rock's most iconic figures, both as an artist and as a rep:

1. There has been a sort of minor resurgence of things Gentle Giant, including the induction of the band into the Portsmouth Hall of Fame, and the imminent release of Three-Piece Suite, a collection of compositions from the first three Gentle Giant albums,...

15 Electrifying Musical Performances from Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark
Playboy After Dark (1969)
It’s difficult to find an aspect of popular culture that Hugh Hefner didn’t influence during his long, remarkable life. Over the course of two seasons, Hefner used his weekly syndicated variety show, Playboy After Dark, as a platform for a broad spectrum of artists.

The entire cast has already arrived on set, with rehearsals currently ongoing. Today, Gunn, who is never shy on social media, shared an image as production nears its start date. This particular photo gives our first look at the new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 logo. He also shared this quote.

"To quote the great poet David Coverdale, Here I Go Again."

James Gunn is of course referring to the former Deep Purple lead singer who later broke out as a solo artist with the hit 1987 single 'Here I Go Again'. Will this song appear on Awesome Mix Vol. 2? Possibly, but that hasn't been confirmed by the director just yet. James Gunn is using the last little amount of time before principle photography begins to tweak and perfect the script.

Cameron Crowe Recalls David Bowie Interviews, Shares Artist's "Self-Portrait"
David Bowie
To a young journalist in the mid-'70s, David Bowie was the ungettable interview. He did not speak to the press. Still, through some cajoling from Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple, both of whom I’d previously profiled, David Bowie called me from a cross-country train trip. “I’ve left my manager,” he said, “I’m traveling to L.A. I’ll call you when I arrive and we can do an interview.” I followed him, with tape rolling, for six months as he transitioned from Young Americans to his next phase, The Thin

Ice-Cube and Kevin Hart Visit St. Louis During The Ride Along 2 Tour
(instagram.com/kevinhart4real)

In early 2014, Universal Pictures’ Ride Along became an instant hit, grossing more than $150 million worldwide as audiences fell hard for the unlikely comic pairing of Ice-Cube and Kevin Hart. And while most sequels don’t begin preproduction until well after moviegoers experience the first, Ride Along 2 was a follow up that the filmmakers knew they had to do.

Starring Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Ken Jeong, Benjamin Bratt, Olivia Munn, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter and Sherri Shepherd, the sequel picks up about a year after our heroes’ last adventure. Plans for a quick trip to Miami go awry when their unorthodox policing gets them into a compromising situation that threatens to derail a major case…and Ben and Angela’s upcoming wedding day. (Trailer)

Ice Cube’s stern, iconic scowl, alongside Kevin Hart’s silliness, plus a funny script by Phil Hay & Matt Manfrediis is sure...

Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple, N.W.A and Steve Miller to Join Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

With the induction of Cheap Trick, Chicago, Deep Purple and Steve Miller — along with relative rookies N.W.A — as its class of 2016, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is bringing some pre-holiday joy to fans who have felt those acts have been slighted and deserving recognition sooner than this. Sound On Sight Podcast 509: ‘Life Is Strange’ and ‘Mockingjay – Part 2’
I’m afraid that some times

you’ll play lonely games too.

Games you can’t win

’cause you’ll play against you. – Dr. Seuss

It’s all fun and games on this week’s show, as we tackle stories filled with war, poverty, time travel, and kidnapping. We kick off with our “What’s in the Box” segment featuring a review of French video game developer Dontnod Entertainment’s critically acclaimed Life is Strange. PopOptiq’s Games Editor, Mike Worby, joins us to explain how this somber, cinematic, story-driven experience is one of the year’s best, his high opinion shared and maybe even surpassed by Editor-in-Chief Ricky. If only there were happier choices… Of course, there are much worse games to play, and with that in mind, for the main event Patrick and Ricky discuss surviving The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, the latest and last entry in...

Sound On Sight Podcast 508: Ash vs. Evil Dead and ‘Spectre’
After a brief hiatus the Sound On Sight podcast is back, with a slightly new format that reflects the wider variety of subject matter to be found here on PopOptiq. This week in our first segment, “What’s in the Box?”, we are joined by one of our resident TV critics, Chris Evangelista, to offer our take on the new Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead. Twenty-two years after Army of Darkness, Bruce Campbell resumes his role as the chainsaw-wielding Ash from Sam Raimi’s cult favorite Evil Dead films, and we discuss how this new show fits with those, both in tone and (if even possible) canon. For our main segment it’s back to movies with a review of Spectre, the 24th entry (or 26th, depending on how you count) in the long-running James Bond series. Our guest, former host and Bond aficionado Edgar Chaput, tries to convince...

5 Things to Expect From Starz's 'Ash vs. Evil Dead'
It's been several decades since Bruce Campbell last kicked ass and chewed bubble gum, but all that will change on Saturday with the premiere of Starz's new horror-comedy series "Ash vs. Evil Dead."

Thirty years after first stumbling across the Necronomicon and awaking something evil in the woods, the snarky, sex-crazed demon hunter is back in business. He's much older and worse for the wear, of course, but none of that will stop him from fighting the good fight (and bedding any distressed damsel he can find).

Moviefone screened the first few episodes of the new series, which we think may appeal to lifelong fans of the franchise and newer audiences alike.

Here are five spoiler-free things to expect from the Halloween premiere:

1. Bruce Is Back and Groovier Than Ever

Bruce Campbell isn't just this show's titular hero and top-billed executive producer; he's the heart and soul of the entire "Evil Dead" franchise.

Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Bill Murray's first Comic-Con appearance was pure rock 'n' roll
Bill Murray at an event for Broken Flowers (2005)
Bill Murray’s Comic-Con debut was one to remember. The legendary actor, who has too many nominations and awards to mention, entered Hall H to the pounding sounds of Deep Purple’s "Smoke on the Water." Predictably the crowd went berserk when they saw the star of the upcoming film "Rock the Kasbah," in which Murray plays a washed-up music manager taking his remaining client on a Uso tour of Afghanistan. Murray has never been one to be low key. And his Comic-Con premiere was no different. Here’s a collection of Murray’s greatest hits from the press conference. On his first appearance at Comic-Con: "We started this morning with bagels and then some tequila.” On his favorite movie role ("Ghostbusters," naturally): "Once upon a time, I did save the city of New York. And I had the coolest damn car to drive around Manhattan." On how he...

Watch Bill Murray Swagger Into Comic Con To Smoke On The Water
When we heard the Open Road Panel at San Diego Comic-Con was a can.t miss event, we started racking our brains to figure out why. Did Open Road somehow mysteriously acquire Marvel right out from under Disney.s nose? No. Were they the real ones to snag all of Warner Bros. edgier DC Comics properties? Nope, not that. As it turns out, it was Bill Murray, which if you ask us is just as good as any Batman v Iron Man v Star Wars announcement.  This was Murray's first time at Comic-Con, so he had to arrive in style. The star of Rock the Kasbah, the film he's out promoting, strutted his stuff down the aisles to the song "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. Walking up onto the stage, host Josh Horowitz introduced Murray to his adoring public as his character in the film, Richie Lanz. Richie...

'Oral Sex During Turbulence': True Tales From the '70s Rock-Star Party Plane of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and More
Bobby Sherman
Decades before deep-pocketed rock and pop stars embraced the Gulfstream V, there was the Starship, a former United Airlines Boeing 720 refurbished in the early 1970s by teen heartthrob Bobby Sherman and his manager, Ward Sylvester, as an airborne pleasure dome. The plane plied the skies in the service of, among others, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, The Allman Brothers, The Bee Gees, Elton John, Peter Frampton and Alice Cooper. One of the great artifacts of the coke-flecked, halter-topped, 'lude-dropping rock 'n' roll gestalt of the '70s — and probable inspiration for Austin Powers'

Better Call Saul, Ep. 1.10: “Marco” says goodbye to Slippin’ Jimmy, and hello to Saul Goodman
Better Call Saul, Season 1, Episode 10: “Marco”

Written by Peter Gould

Directed by Peter Gould

Airs Mondays at 10Pm Est on AMC

In the crushing aftermath of Chuck’s betrayal in last week’s penultimate episode, the season finale moves at a surprisingly quiet pace, working mainly as a character study for the man who will one day be known as Saul Goodman, while filling in some of the blanks of the timeline as established thus far.

“Marco” opens with another flashback sequence, this time taking place the moment after Chuck bailed out Jimmy and just before Jimmy got on the plane to Albuquerque. Though it initially seems like a throwaway bit to give us another look at how Slippin’ Jimmy turned it around, this is later shown to be false, as a key scene has Jimmy returning to that exact bar in a state of disillusionment.

However, before that,...
