Travis Scott Hangs Out With His Amazing Friends on ‘Jackboys 2’
Image
“Yeah, man, I swear these old niggas kill me,” raps Travis Scott in his typical melodic flow on “Champain & Vacay.” The Houston star’s pushback against Clipse’s “So Be It,” where Pusha T’s ripped Scott for his “lack of loyalty” towards past mentors and friends like Kanye West and Drake, seems relatively tame. The irony, though, is that Scott isn’t young anymore, either. At age 34, he’s been a star since 2014’s Days Before Rodeo, and his traits are overly familiar: the watery and slightly distorted harmonies,...

Image

Marking the follow-up to his acclaimed 2022 album, Luv 4 Rent, the project doesn’t have as many high-profile features. However, Bun B contributes a guest verse and there’s production from longtime collaborator Monte Booker as well as Kenny Beats and Thundercat (who also sings on “Hoe-nouns). Plus, there are reunions with Ravyn Lenae and Reggie.

I wanted to make something that feels limitless, like it could live outside of time.”

When Ugk’s Pimp C first heard Project Pat’s 2002 song “Choose U,” he was immediately taken by the beat. The track samples Willie Hutch’s soulful “I Choose You,” and Pimp C couldn’t believe it wasn’t a hit.

When Ugk got back into the studio to work on their 2007 album Underground Kingz, they wanted to see if they could make their own song using the same beat. They enlisted Three 6 Mafia’s Juicy J (Project Pat’s little brother) and DJ Paul to produce for them, and...

2024 Emmy nominations ballot: See the 50 Best Competition Program hopefuls from ‘Alone’ to ‘The Voice’
Image
Since 2003, the Best Competition Program Emmy has been awarded annually in recognition of reality entertainment structured around talent or endurance contests. This year, there are 50 such options for TV academy members to choose from on their first-round nominations ballots, which means there will be five nominees announced on July 17. This is down from 59 entrants in 2023 and 81 in 2022.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 24 to cast their Emmy nominations ballots for their favorite competition programs. They must limit their choices to five, reflecting the number of eventual nominees.

Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the competition program submissions include plot descriptions. Which of the shows listed below do you think will make the final cut?

Beyonce songs, ranked: Counting down her 34 greatest hits for the era of ‘Cowboy Carter’
Image
Beyonce‘s career breakthrough came in the 1990s as a teenage member of Destiny’s Child. But since then she has established herself as one of the biggest music stars of the 21st century. So naturally it’s challenging to narrow down the greatest hits of her career … not that we let that stop us from trying, though. Scroll down for our countdown of her best songs — including “Countdown”! Do you agree with how we rank them?

Destiny’s Child had several hits including “Survivor” and “Bills, Bills, Bills,” but it was “Say My Name” that earned Beyonce her first Grammys when she was only 19: Best R&b Duo/Group Performance and Best R&b Song. She has since become one of the most awarded individuals in Grammy history, the most awarded woman in history, and the most nominated woman in history. But most of the top categories have eluded her.

Mickey Factz Wants to Take Rappers to School

There’s no instruction manual for the rap industry. A streaming marketplace flooded with music means it takes more than ever for an artist to stand out from the pack, and figuring out how to improve on your craft and navigate the business end at the same time leaves many rappers scrambling for answers. And in some cases, it leaves artists susceptible to scammers and promoters peddling false promises of easy fame.

Mickey Factz wants to change all that. He’s spent the last 15 years building his own career from the ground up.

Mo Amer on Making His Palestinian Refugee Comedy ‘Mo’ and Highlighting Houston With Bun B
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched Season 1 of “Mo” on Netflix.

As I finish interviewing comedian Mo Amer and ask him if there’s anything else he’d like to talk about, he says, “I don’t have a lean addiction, nor have I ever been addicted to lean. I keep saying that every chance I can, because it gets weird out here.”

It’s an important distinction to make, as the mixture of prescription cough syrup, soda and candy has killed many, especially in Houston, where Amer grew up. He is the co-creator, executive producer and star of “Mo,” a comedy-drama series that heavily draws from his true experiences as a refugee — his parents were displaced from Palestine to Kuwait where Amer was born, before the whole family fled to Texas during the Gulf War. Several of the show’s most painful moments — like when,...

Patti LaBelle at an event for For Colored Girls (2010)
Father’s Day and Juneteenth overlap this year, and there is no shortage of programming on television for the latter holiday, which celebrates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, and delivered the news that all enslaved people were free. The Emancipation Proclamation arrived two years later on Jan. 1, 1863.

Juneteenth has gained more awareness in recent years, finally becoming recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.

Programming celebrating Black music, culture and more will run all weekend, culminating in the holiday itself on Sunday, June 19.

Bun B, Mr. Biggs Dissect Centuries of Racist Violence in ‘The Future Is Mine’ Short Film
Image
Two hip-hop legends, Bun B and Soulsonic Force’s Mr. Biggs, anchor a harrowing and breathless exploration of American racism and violence in a new short film, The Future is Mine.

“The Future Is Mine” is an eight-minute opus that covers Columbus’ arrival in the Americas through the end of slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights movement, the election of Donald Trump, the white supremacist march in Charlottesville and the recent police killing of George Floyd. Bun B and Mr. Biggs draw on all this history in their cutting bars...

George Floyd’s Funeral in Houston on June 9th, 2020
Image
“Last week, I was set to do a bunch of FaceTime photoshoots that dealt with isolation during quarantine with my friends Trey Songz, Bun B, Black Thought, DJ A-Trak, Freddie Gibbs, and more celebs.

But the idea of doing [that project] got tossed out the window, and I put on my photojournalist cap and went to work on one of the most historic and life-changing events in our lifetime. I went straight to the frontlines in my own backyard of New York City — during the peaceful protest, looting, and rioting. Every day...

After the intruder demanded valuables, Queenie offered her Audi in the garage. Bun B, who heard the commotion downstairs, grabbed his weapon and confronted the intruder in the garage. A shootout reportedly ensued, with...

Why ‘Someone Great’ Cast a Lorde Song Before Gina Rodriguez or Lakeith Stanfield
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was sobbing in front of a row of rotisserie chickens. Standing dumbfounded in the aisle of a New York grocery store after her boyfriend dumped her, she heard Adele’s “Someone Like You” come over the sound system — and “I was trying to smile through it, but then I was smiling and crying, and I truly looked insane,” she remembers. She knew she wanted a version of that memory to star in Someone Great.

It took the form of Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise, an inseparable trio of since-college friends,...

The post caption features Graham thanking the tape’s numerous collaborators (Noah “40” Shebib, Boi-1da), associates (Oliver El-Khatib, Niko) and mentors (Bun B, Lil Wayne...

Kylie Jenner in Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007)
Travis Scott: In Orbit With Rap’s Newest Superstar
Kylie Jenner in Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007)
Travis Scott wants to see Kylie Jenner before her private jet takes off, but he’s running late to meet her, so he punches the gas on his Lamborghini SUV and sends the speedometer into hysterics: 80 miles an hour becomes 95 becomes a screaming 110, or exactly double the speed limit on this particular stretch of Houston highway. It is pouring rain. Farther up in Scott’s lane, where traffic is thicker, a Land Rover brakes, but Scott — left hand on the wheel, right hand on his phone, eyes on a maps app — does not.

Review; Bun B Soaks Up Some Texas Love on ‘Return of the Trill’
Big K.R.I.T.
Port Arthur’s most famous living musician returns for his first album in five years, and it’s an opportunity for a host of rappers to pay homage. Big K.R.I.T. produces the strongest track, “Outta Season,” which is the soulful, bluesy equivalent of riding on dubs with the top down, the breeze floating through your hair. Yo Gotti and 2 Chainz guest on “Traphandz,” which sounds more like circa-2005 trap than its current Metro Boomin-led variant. Gary Clark Jr. and Leon Bridges help Bun B pay homage to his late...

13 New Albums To Stream Now: Tash Sultana, Troye Sivan, The Band and More Editors’ Picks
Editors’ Pick: Tash Sultana, Flow State

This Melbourne-based busker-gone-legit raises the “do it yourself” stakes with her debut, which is a top-to-bottom showcase of her varied virtuosity; she’s the lone musician credited on the album, as well as its producer and songwriter. Given Sultana’s playing-for-tips roots, it’s probably appropriate that Flow State whirls through styles — “Cigarettes” starts as loose-limbed R&B then speeds things up to a near-frantic pace, “Salvation” recalls the marriage of big beats and gossamer voices that dominated indie discos in the late ’90s,...

Scooter Braun: Stevie Wonder, Beyonce Spoke from the Heart in Politicized Telethon
[[tmz:video id="0_k3udx9we"]] Scooter Braun isn't apologizing for what some considered overly political remarks during his and Bun B's nationally televised telethon event for hurricane relief.
