Festival Report: 78th Cannes
Image
by Jean-Marc Thérouanne

The Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinema salutes fraternally the great Iranian director Jafar Panahi, whose film «un simple accident» won the prestigious Palme d’or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. This well-deserved award crowns a humanist thriller that poses the serious question of the possibility of the pardon of the oppressed towards his executioner to achieve national reconciliation, on condition of repentance of the latter.

Jafar Panahi is a giant of the world cinema, multi-award-winning author of eleven feature films and seven shorts. He was president of the jury at the 10th Fica Vesoul 2004.

“Simple accident” also wins the citizenship award.

The 2nd Prix Luciole Wraps Up in Cannes — A Celebration of Cinematic Aesthetics Between Filmmakers and Designers
Image
The 2nd edition of the Prix Luciole was held during the 78th Cannes Film Festival, reaffirming its unique position as the first independent award dedicated to the art of film posters during the festival. Held on May 22, the ceremony brought together filmmakers, designers, and visual artists for a focused and thoughtful celebration of cinematic imagery and graphic design in film.

The ceremony took place at the MO11 Art Gallery, just steps from the Palais des Festivals, where the festival’s official poster Un homme et une femme hung in plain view. This visual was designed by the acclaimed French studio Hartland Villa, founded by Lionel Avignon and Stefan de Vivies, who have shaped Cannes’ visual language since 2021 with a minimalist and lyrical approach that defines the festival’s unique visual identity.

Lionel and Stefan returned this year as jury members of the Prix Luciole, joined by renowned film distributor and industry consultant Thomas Pibarot,...

‘Sons of the Neon Night’ Review: Juno Mak’s Long-Delayed Hong Kong Action Drama Is Paper Thin
Image
Any film that’s been sitting on the shelf for seven years deserves to see the light of day, but Juno Mak’s “Sons of the Neon Night” — which wrapped filming in 2018 — could’ve used more time in the oven. It’s hard to say what’s strangest about the gloomy action flick: that it’s overwrought and convoluted to the point of confusion, or that it somehow manages to feel incomplete despite this.

Set in an alternate, snow-covered Hong Kong in the mid-1990s, the movie’s opening images speak to an intriguing setting that’s seldom explored. Moreton Li (Takeshi Kaneshiro), CEO and heir to a pharma conglomerate, wakes up in a lush bed in his sprawling penthouse carved from the remains of an enormous cross-harbor tunnel. It’s the kind of imaginative flourish that both raises questions about this world and immediately establishes character, but it’s...

Hong Kong Cinema Makes Splash at Cannes With Industry Push
Image
Hong Kong’s film industry is flexing its muscles at the Cannes Film Festival with a campaign designed to cement the city’s position as Asia’s premier film hub and IP trading center.

“Hong Kong Cinema @ Cannes 2025,” which kicked off May 13 and runs through May 24, has brought a significant contingent of Hong Kong film companies to the Croisette in a coordinated effort backed by multiple government agencies including the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency, the Hong Kong Film Development Council, and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

The campaign’s centerpiece event, Hong Kong Night, drew more than 800 industry professionals to Majestic Beach on May 17, including the creative team behind “Sons of the Neon Night,” which landed a Midnight Screenings slot at this year’s festival. Director Juno Mak and stars Louis Koo and Gao Yuanyuan were on hand to celebrate the world premiere of their film alongside international producers,...

Sons of the Neon Night Review: Brothers at War in Neon Shadows
Image
In a reimagined 1994 Hong Kong scarred by snow and fallout, Sons of the Neon Night throws us into a world where pharmaceutical heirs become warlords. We meet Moreton Li (Takeshi Kaneshiro) on the brink of reforming his family’s empire just moments after a hospital bombing shatters the city’s fragile order.

Across town, an anonymous shoot-out signals that no one is safe—be they corporate scion or street-level informant. This stark prologue sets up a power struggle between two brothers: one driven by conscience, the other by profit.

What follows is less a straightforward crime saga and more a tense clash of ideals in neon shadows. The film’s opening gambit—blood-soaked streets, a shattered ambulance plowing through chaos—pulls you in with visceral immediacy.

As someone who grew up devouring Hong Kong thrillers on late-night VHS, I couldn’t help but recall that rush of discovering a city both familiar and alien.

Sons of the Neon Night is set in an alternative, snow-covered Hong Kong — a startling sight, given that the city does not experience snowfall. However, he faces threats from his fugitive older brother and the ruthless lieutenants loyal to their deceased father.

Scarlett Johansson
Cannes 2025 | Full line up for this year’s film festival
Scarlett Johansson
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 line-up reveals the films that likely will be chatted about long through the year. Here’s what’s showing.

Cannes Film Festival has published its official line-up for this year’s event, and we get our first hint at the films that are set to be part of the awards conversation for the coming months. The festival will be screening several interesting films, including the directorial debuts of Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson in the new filmmaker category.

Screening out of competition will be Spike Lee’s latest offering, Highest 2 Lowest, and Tom Cruise and company are taking Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to the festival too. This has proved to be a public relations misstep in the past (remember Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny?) but with Mission releasing so soon after the festival, this seems like a savvy move to us.

The list of this year’s Cannes Film Festival features Ari Aster’s Eddington, Phoenician Scheme, Mission: Impossible and more

The full list of films that will be screening at the 78th Annual Cannes Film Festival has been released. The line-up was announced this morning by the Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and President Iris Knobloch at a press conference in Paris. The Hollywood Reporter has shared the program listing for this year’s event. While there are a number of anticipated high-profile titles, a bevy of auteurs will be showcasing their latest, including Kelly Reichardt, who will be returning to the competition with The Mastermind. The film is an art-heist drama and stars Josh O’Connor and John Magaro, which takes place during the Vietnam War.

Joachim Trier, the Norwegian filmmaker who made a splash in 2021 with The Worst Person of the World, returns with the new film Sentimental Value, which features Renate Reinsve. Julia Ducournau, the director of the surreal film, Titane, which got her a Palme d’Or...

Cannes 2025 Lineup: Richard Linklater, Ari Aster, Kelly Reichardt, and More in Competition
Image
The guessing game around which films could make the lineup for the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 13—24, came to an end this morning at a press conference in Paris by Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch. If you tapped the latest works by Ari Aster (Eddington), Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind), Richard Linklater (Nouvelle Vague), Wes anderson (The Phoenician Scheme), and the Dardenne brothers (Young Mothers) to make the cut, then you were correct.

Neon, which is on a five-year winning streak of Palme d’Or winners, two of which went on to win best picture at the Oscars (Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite and Sean Baker’s Anora), will try to make it a sixth with, for now, either of the two films it already has in its stable: Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value and Julie Ducournau’s Alpha.

Filmart: Aaron Kwok to Star in Comedy-Drama ‘Iou’
Image
Hong Kong leading man Aaron Kwok will next star in Iou, a heartwarming drama directed by Steven Zhang Zhonghua. The film reunites Kwok with Hong Kong producer Julia Chu, with whom he teamed up for Port of Call (2015) and Where the Wind Blows (2022). Distribution Workshop is shopping the film to international buyers this week at Hong Kong’s Filmart content market.

Set against the background of recent, real-life fundraising scams in China, Iou is a comedy-drama “that satirizes the selfishness of an interest-driven society,” according to the producers.

Kwok plays a desperate man struggling between survival and kindness. Trying to repay his own debts by all means necessary, Kwok’s character, a man named Wu, blocks two siblings inside their rural Shaanxi home, hoping to force their father to pay back the money Wu loaned him. Despite causing him endless headaches, the siblings’ simple-mindedness and compassion transform Wu, leading him...

The 50 Best Chinese Language Films of the Decade (2011-2020)
Image
Considering the political issues that torment the whole Sinophone world, and the ways all these countries (even this term is under consideration) are connected and clashing at the same time, coming up with a title and which films to include in that list is at least as difficult as winnowing the films in the list.

Despite all the turmoil, however, films of utmost quality continue to come out from this region, if even the “Hollywood of the East” (aka Hong Kong) is definitely not in the place it used to be during the 90s, with the fact that Chinese “Better Days” and Taiwanese “A Sun” are shortlisted for the Oscar for Foreign Movie, highlighting the fact in the most eloquent fashion.

In an effort to select some of the best Sinophone movies of the decade (2011-2020), we came up with 50 we felt were the ones that truly stand out in terms of quality,...

Whatever happened to Juno Mak’s film “Sons of the Neon Night”? The only clue is a “Making Of”
Hong Kong singer / actor / director / prodcer Juno Mak is – allegedly – about to release (after 5 years of writing and 1 year shooting) his sophomore directorial work, “Sons of a Neon Night” after the excellent homage to Hong Kong Jiangshi movies, “Rigor Mortis” of 2013. Mak is well known for his musical career and for acting in movies like “Dream Home” (2010) by Pang Ho-cheung and as the troubled protagonist (and writer) of “Revenge: A Love Story” (2010) by Wong Ching-Po.

The crime thriller “Sons of the Neon Night” – also written and produced by Juno Mak – is set for release in 2020. However, after revealing – at a press conference in 2017 – an intriguing two-minute behind-the-scene featurette, a batch of beautiful photo-stills and a teaser poster, we have lost tracks.

In 2018 production for the film had officially wrapped and the director had announced a 2019 release while promoting it at the Hong Kong Filmart 2018. Apparently, several problems encountered in the...

Film Review: Revenge: A Love Story (2010) by Wong Ching-Po
“Revenge: A Love Story” is a thriller coming from Hong Kong and directed by Wong Ching-Po who also co-writes the script with Jill Leung. This is based on an original story by the main actor Juno Mak and sets off to make appearances in several world festivals.

The film starts with an unsettling scene of a police officer’s struggle. The man that tries to kill the police officer is Chan Kit (Juno Mak) who also previously had removed the police officer’s unborn child from his pregnant wife and threw it in a river. The finding of another pregnant woman’s body and a fetus lying close to her follows as this woman is the wife of another police officer. The police manage to arrest Chan Kit while he is trying to escape from the murdering scene by riding a bus. As the news of the...

Film Review: Rigor Mortis (2013) by Juno Mak
The hopping dead of the 80s Hong Kong Mr. Vampire movie series is brought back to live in this lively but less comedy orientated tribute by Juno Mak, in his debut as a director.

The story is pretty simple; a middle- aged man moves into an apartment in an old, rundown block of building. As it turns out, he intends to end his life there because of his career and family problems. However, he fails his suicide attempt and becomes possessed by some evil spirits that still haunt his apartment.

From here, we are introduced to the rest of the occupants as he slowly gets to know them and learn about their everyday life, while strange things start to happen. Soon enough, besides the living, we encounter death, the undead, ghosts and the granddaddy of them all, the hopping vampire (Jiangshi) fully dressed in his finest traditional costume of course.

Revenge: A Love Story
A kind of peculiar entry in the grotesque thriller category, as it makes an effort to “justify” a man that kills pregnant women taking away their unborn babies.

The film starts with this particular man, Kit, performing the aforementioned action on cop’s wives and subsequently, killing their husbands. Eventually he is caught while trying to get away from a crime scene and as he is interrogated in the police station, the film makes a flashback to the past to explain his life story. Months earlier, Kit was selling steamed dumplings in front of a small neighborhood grocery store. Eventually he meets a young woman named Wing, which is actually a mentally challenged high school girl. The two of them form a relationship despite her grandmother’s protests and after some time they run away. Not having anywhere to live, they end up in a prostitute’s apartment where an...

Kill Breed - A Look at the Many Species of Vampires
Vampire. Envision the creature. Do you picture the classic cloaked version? Or the frilly shirt-wearing kind? Or the feral? Or god forbid the sparkly ones? Vampires come in all shapes and sizes, and with Rigor Mortis coming to Blu-ray and DVD on July 8th, we decided to take a look at some of our favorites.

Ever since Bram Stoker brought us Dracula, filmmakers and storytellers have been modifying vamps and making them into all sorts of unique beasties. Some are pretty and some are really, really ugly… but they all drink blood and use humans like we use cattle.

Rigor Mortis features a very unique type of vampire, and it's always fun to see a creature that expands the legend.

So let's take a look at some of the coolest types of vampires that have come into our lives.

For starters, we'll begin with the classic vampire. And what do we mean by "classic" vampire?...

Good day, deviliers of all things eggy. Has everybody run out to watch Deliver Us From Evil yet? Juno Mak's Rigor Mortis is a Visual Marvel: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. ‘Rigor Mortis’ is a misfiring genre cocktail
Rigor Mortis

Written by Lai-yin Leung and Philip Yung

Directed by Juno Mak

Hong Kong, 2013

Asian horror cinema is one of the most original and frightening forms of storytelling around. Films like Ringu and Ju-on: The Grudge are solid proof that the far east offers exciting new platforms for supernatural creatures (like ghosts) to scare and entice. A slightly interesting but overall mediocre new film, Rigor Mortis continues this trend, but, sadly, the results are somewhat disappointing. This horror-action hybrid from Hong Kong is actually a tribute to the 1985 horror-comedy Mr. Vampire, and contains some of the same actors from that film.

Taking place in an apartment housing complex in Hong Kong, Rigor Mortis focuses on washed-up actor Chin Siu Ho, played, appropriately enough, by Chin Siu-Ho. With his family out of the picture and his career in the toilet, Chin decides to end it all by hanging himself. When he attempts to do this,...

Review: Rigor Mortis Pays Eerie Homage To Hong Kong Vampires
Hong Kong popstar-turned-actor Juno Mak continues to defy expectations with his directorial debut, a sombre and eerie eulogy to the hopping vampires of the 1980s that trades the sub-genre's signature laughs for world-weary melancholy from a fine cast of screen veterans. After the surprise success of Wong Ching Po's Revenge A Love Story, lead actor Juno Mak, who also conceived of the bleak thriller's premise, felt sufficiently empowered to step behind the camera and helm a feature film of his own. Inspired by the traditional Chinese vampire films of his youth, most notably Ricky Lau's Mr. Vampire (1985), Mak set out to resurrect and ultimately lay to rest that particular sub-genre of Hong Kong horror. Set in a shadowy, otherworldly apartment complex, populated by a...

Rigor Mortis Attempts to Breathe Grim Life Into Horror Genre
Marilyn Eastman, Duane Jones, and Judith Ridley in Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Horror genres tend to get sillier over time as we get more comfortable with our fears. Frankenstein eventually meets Abbot and Costello. Night of the Living Dead shambles inexorably to Dead Alive and Shawn of the Dead.

With Rigor Mortis, Juno Mak tries to put that engine in reverse, attempting to breathe grim life into the geung si (Chinese hopping vampire) genre, traditionally spooky slapstick. The resulting creep show has some frantic action scenes, but never quite enough spring in its step.

A despondent actor — '80s geung-si star Chin Siu-ho, playing a version of himself — moves into a relentlessly gray Hong Kong apartment building to end it all. (The bleak setting emphasizes Ho's mood, but also presumably makes it easier on t...

Top 5 Foreign Vampire Films
We love our vampires. There is no denying that. And whether they be the frilly shirt wearing kind or the pointy toothed Alaskan invaders, whatever form they come in, we eat them right up (pun definitely intended). In celebration of the VOD and limited theatrical release of the Hong Kong vampire flick Rigor Mortis, we bring you the Top 5 Foreign Vampire Films.

A film by Juno Mak, Rigor Mortis promises to be one insane ride of vampirism. Heavily laden with F/X and action, the film is a sort of homage to the Chinese vampire movies of the '80s.

Definitely a unique experience, Rigor Mortis looks to make its mark as a memorable foreign vampire film itself.

But back to the topic at hand. We have a couple of honorable mentions to start off with, including (and we're speculating on this first one, but we know it's going to...

Siff ’14 Review: Rigor Mortis (2013)
The last movie I saw from the mind of Juno Mak, 2010’s “Revenge: A Love Story,” is not an easy movie to watch, even for the most seasoned shock cinema veterans. Full of brutal sexual violence, torture, mutilation, and some ways to deal with a pregnancy that most people would never think of, it can be a rough go. But it’s also a fantastic feat of storytelling, full of misdirection and moves that totally change your perspective on the film. Mak wrote and stars in “Revenge,” and he steps behind the camera to direct the vampire horror thriller “Rigor Mortis,” offering up a different kind of darkness. Though “Rigor Mortis” is definitely a movie designed to make you uncomfortable, it largely eschews the straight up violence and depravity—don’t worry, there is still a bunch—for spooky atmosphere, a creepy story of broken people, and by crushing your eardrums.

Review: Rigor Mortis Is Anything but Stiff
Asian horror cinema is quite a different animal. There is always subtext layered deep within that deals with the consequences of our actions, therefore, even the simplest horror stories seem deeper and more developed. That is the case with Juno Mak’s directorial debut, Rigor Mortis, a film that is layered in so much meaning, that every frame is alive. The film opens with a man reflecting on his life, of all things, as an actor. This would explain away the ruin around him as being part of a huge set. Operatic, sure, but it could be a man on a stage performing for the world. Life is ridiculous, he says, before the film flashes back to tell us its story.
