Aside from taking a bow (or three) and receiving applause, actors don’t typically address the audience following a stage performance.

But last night’s production of the one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe at L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum was not an average night at the theater for Cecily Strong, which is why she took 30 seconds at the end of a very enthusiastic standing ovation to make an announcement.

“I want to acknowledge one very special person who’s here tonight — our original Trudy, our hero, the incredible Lily Tomlin,” she said, her voice quivering with emotion as she shouted out the comedy legend, a reveal that was greeted by shock and awe from the sold-out crowd on opening night. The room responded by intensifying an already electric round of applause as guests scanned the seats to locate Tomlin.

One of the hottest awards contenders of the year, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” has just revealed to Gold Derby that a whopping 22 cast members will be eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Lead actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon serve as bookends of the alphabetical list (see below), which also includes recent SAG Award nominees Steve Carell and Billy Crudup, plus new cast member (and guild queen) Julianna Margulies.

The last time “The Morning Show” contended at the 2020 SAG Awards, Aniston prevailed in the individual actress category, but the drama was shockingly snubbed in the ensemble race. That egregious oversight should be rectified this year, as the cast now comes in second place to win, according to Gold Derby predictions, behind only HBO’s “Succession.”
