Jacob Elordi's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Jacob Elordi grew up performing in school plays in Australia before making it big in Hollywood, and his best movies and television shows demonstrate that he has what it takes to carry a project on his shoulders. He only recently made his professional acting debut, in 2018, with movies in both Australia and the United States, so his filmography is not as extensive as some of his costars.

He might not have very many acting credits to his name, but he does have a good variety of credits. Elordi has appeared in teen comedies, biographical dramas, satires, and tear-jerking dramas. Not all of his movies have been the most successful, but they have provided stepping stones for his career, and his best movie and TV roles provide a showcase for the kind of performer he is growing into.

‘Kissing Booth’ Star Joey King Reacts to Jacob Elordi’s Criticism of Franchise: ‘It’s Unfortunate Anyone Would Feel That Way’
Image
Joey King is speaking out about her “Kissing Booth” co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of their hit Netflix rom-com franchise.

“I think it’s unfortunate anyone would feel that way,” King told me Saturday at the Balenciaga fashion show in Los Angeles. “I had a great time making those movies no matter what anyone says.”

Elordi disappointed the casts of the three “The Kissing Booth” films as well as their fans when he slammed the film in his GQ Men of the Year cover story. “I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies,” he told the magazine. “Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”

At the Men of the Year party last month, “Kissing Booth” actor Taylor Zakhar Perez told me, “I thought it was a shame because to my knowledge, everybody else had such a wonderful experience.”

Perez continued,...

‘Kissing Booth’ Star Taylor Zakhar Perez Responds to Jacob Elordi Criticizing Their Netflix Films: ‘It’s a Shame That Was His Experience’
Image
“The Kissing Booth” actor Taylor Zakhar Perez says he was surprised by co-star Jacob Elordi’s criticism of the rom-com franchise.

“I thought it was a shame because to my knowledge, everybody else had such a wonderful experience,” Perez told me Thursday at the GQ Men of the Year party at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood.

“It’s a shame that was his experience on the set. Especially when those movies came out, it was a time when we really needed something like that,” he said, alluding to the Covid pandemic. “I know from our fan interactions, getting stopped everywhere I go, what ‘Kissing Booth’ means to people and what it brought them during such a dark time. I guess the silver lining is he still made people laugh and feel good.”

Elordi sparked headlines earlier this week by bashing the franchise in his GQ Men of the Year cover story.

‘The Kissing Booth’ Filmmaker Vince Marcello & iGeneration Studios Developing Period Drama Series ‘Diva’ Inspired By Rise Of French Opera Singer Julie d’Aubigny
Image
Exclusive: Vince Marcello (The Kissing Booth trilogy) is set to showrun and executive produce Diva, a new drama series inspired by the exploits of real-life French heroine Julie d’Aubigny, from iGeneration Studios. Marcello co-created the series with Max Benitz — who will serve as its head writer — and will also direct a portion of its episodes.

Billed as a period adventure-drama told through a very contemporary lens, Diva chronicles D’Aubigny’s rise from an impoverished servant in 1680s France to battle rogues and royalty alike, in her quest to conquer the stage as the opera singer otherwise known as La Maupin. The show set amidst some of Europe’s most iconic settings, including Louis Xiv’s Palace of Versailles, the backstreets of Paris and Marseille, and the lavender-filled hillsides of Provence, will then watch as La Maupin finds fame, fortune and love – with both men and women – along the way.

‘The Kissing Booth 3’ Review: Hit Netflix Franchise Gets a Gratuitous Send-Off Kiss
Image
How many movies does it take to tell a story about high school senior Elle Evans (Joey King) trying to decide whether to honor her friendship to lifelong bestie Lee (Joel Courtney) or break the “rules” by dating his smoking-hot older brother, Noah (Jacob Elordi)? If you’re Netflix — the content factory that milked “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” for its full trilogy potential — then the answer is three, obviously. Except the makers of “The Kissing Booth” didn’t have a solid book series to fall back on, nor a compelling romantic rivalry to stretch across multiple movies.

What they did have was the data to suggest audiences wanted more. I too wanted more — less of the same, but a little substance for a change. How great would it be if Elle found enough self-respect to pursue her own dreams, rather than deciding her future according to which...

‘The Kissing Booth 3’ Review: Netflix’s Icky YA Rom-Com Trilogy Finds Its Forgettable Finale
Image
Netflix’s “The Kissing Booth” franchise began with sexist and retrograde attitudes toward its high school-age lead characters, then evolved into a collection of romantic tropes and tricks that give the genre a bad name. Now we are left with the final insult: Three films in, this series still doesn’t get its leading lady. In the face of icky writing, limp directing, awful pacing, horrific green screen, and terrible jokes, star Joey King spent three film adaptations of Beth Reeckles’ YA novels injecting heart and humor into her Elle Evans. Still,

Where last summer’s “The Kissing Booth 2” improved upon the series’ ostensible comedic bent and allowed King to shine, the franchise’s conclusion doubles down on its worst elements. At least it’s over, but series filmmaker Vince Marcello won’t let it stop without another overstuffed, 113-minute entry, complete with a bizarre postscript meant to leave...

Thierry Frémaux
The stream runs dry: why hasn’t Netflix discovered any big directors?
Thierry Frémaux
Aside from a conveyor belt of romcoms, the popular platform has struggled to find any big new names. Can it learn anything from old-fashioned cinema?

Ahead of the Cannes film festival earlier this month, its artistic director, Thierry Frémaux, asked a good question: “What directors have been discovered by [streaming] platforms?” He called on journalists to name one. Nobody shouted out, “What about Vince Marcello, who gave us The Kissing Booth?” Nobody could name any at all, in fact. Cannes and Netflix have been engaged in their own saga over the soul of cinema in recent years but Frémaux raised an important point: streaming services have transformed the landscape to the point they threaten the very survival of theatrical cinema. But what are they building in its place?

The Kissing Booth 3 Trailer Brings the End of an Era to Netflix This Summer
Image
Netflix created one of the most popular franchises with The Kissing Booth series, about the character of Elle, and her complicated relationship with off-again, on-again boyfriend Noah. But despite the franchise's young, female audience demographic swooning over the story's various love triangles and quadrilaterals, filmmaker Vince Marcello, who has written and directed all three installments in The Kissing Booth trilogy, describes the series as a "coming-of-age" tale, with the upcoming The Kissing Booth 3 being the culmination of that arc.

The Kissing Booth 3 synopsis reads, "It's the summer before Elle heads to college, and she's facing the hardest decision of her life: whether to move across the country with her dreamy boyfriend Noah or fulfill her lifelong promise to go to college with her Bff Lee. Whose heart will Elle break?"

Director Vince Marcello says of the final installment, "Although The Kissing Booth is a romantic comedy, the heart...

The Wait For The Kissing Booth 3 Is Almost Over! Netflix Has Finally Given It a Release Date
Image
Netflix knows what the people want and is ready to give it to us! Well, in due time. A mere two days after the premiere of The Kissing Booth 2 in July 2020, cast members Joey King, Joel Courtney, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Taylor Zakhar Perez, and Meganne Young announced that a third film was not only coming, but had already been filmed! Nearly a year later, we finally have a release date: Aug. 11.

While the cast have been hush-hush on what exactly the film will focus on, we already have a good idea. A special first look at the film shows Elle (King), Noah (Jacob Elordi), Lee (Courtney), and Rachel (Young) at the Flynn house the summer after graduation. Elle is dodging calls from Harvard admission, which means she still hasn't decided where she wants to go for college and hasn't told anyone about having been accepted to both Harvard and Berkeley.

Addison Rae and Tanner Buchanan in He's All That (2021)
“He’s All That” is a twist on the 1999 teen comedy “She’s All That”

Netflix has a lot going on this summer. A new preview trailer gives quick glimpses of the streaming service’s upcoming slate — including the first look at TikTok star Addison Rae in “He’s All That” and a release date for “The Kissing Booth 3.”

Rae shows up just shy of 40 seconds into the trailer, dancing at a pool party with her friends. The footage also shows a glimpse of her co-star, Tanner Buchanan, dressed in black tie formal wear. “How fun is this?” Rae asks, before Buchanan pops in with an excited, “Oh, that’s awesome!”

“He’s All That” is set to be a gender-swapped reboot of the 1999 teen comedy “She’s All That.” The original starred Rachel Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr., as Laney Boggs and Zack Syler respectively, and followed the pair’s unexpected love story.

Why Does Hollywood Keep Handing Romance Franchises to Male Directors?
Image
When To All the Boys I've Loved Before premiered on Netflix in 2018, it was instantly hailed as a romantic comedy sensation. Critics centered much of this acclaim on the film's director, Susan Johnson, for infusing the story with its jubilant tone and lending her eye to smaller touches like the production design of Lara Jean's (Lana Condor) home, which was curated to represent the character's Asian heritage.

When Johnson bowed out of directing the sequel due to prior commitments, the reins were passed off to a male director, Michael Fimognari - a move that arguably resulted in diminishing returns from the franchise's inferior latter chapters. But the To All the Boys series is just one example of a frustrating pattern in the film industry: female directors establish female-focused romance franchises with strong first installments, only to be booted to make space for male successors.

The female directors that inaugurated many...

Director Vince Marcello knows fans can not get enough of “The Kissing Booth,” and not long after Netflix released the film’s much-anticipated sequel, “The Kissing Booth 2,” it was announced that a third installment had already been shot.

‘The Kissing Booth 2’ Star Taylor Zakhar Perez on Having to Lie About a Third Movie
Image
When “The Kissing Booth 2” premiered on July 24, Taylor Zakhar Perez had about 70,000 followers on Instagram. Within a week, he had three million.

But that should come as no real surprise because Perez is the newest hottie in the “Kissing Booth” franchise. Directed, co-written and produced by Vince Marcello, the sequel to Netflix’s hit 2018 film finds Elle (Joey King) as a senior in high school and caught in a love triangle with the new guy at school (Perez) and boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), now a freshman at Harvard.

“My younger sister and I live together and today when I woke up, she was like, ‘You have three million followers on Instagram,’” Perez told Variety on Friday afternoon.” I was like, ‘Oh, my God.’ She says, ‘How do you feel?’ I go, ‘I don’t know. The Kissing Booth landed on Netflix in the Summer of 2018 to fanfare from those it was aimed at, with many enjoying it’s simplistically sweet high-school love story and characters who had a chemistry that pushed it up a touch. I mean… I’m a 30-something guy who tends to veer towards Amelie, Before Sunrise or True Romance for my love stories, so it wasn’t really my bag, but I didn’t expect it to be. I’m not the general demographic for The Kissing Booth. I’m okay with that. So… when the sequel hatched from the egg of uncertainty a week or two back, and my better-half decided...

The Kissing Booth 3 Is Already Shot, Will Arrive on Netflix in 2021
Image
The Kissing Booth 2 released on Netflix recently, and quickly became the most-watched film on the streaming platform over the weekend, in addition to becoming one of Netflix's most-watched films of all time. A second sequel to the hit teen rom-com would be a no-brainer at this point. Joey King, who plays the lead role and also acts as executive producer, recently revealed that The Kissing Booth 3 has already been shot and is in post-production, to be released next year.

The first movie in the series, The Kissing Booth, told the story of Elle, played by Joey King, who has been best friends with Lee Flynn, played by Joel Courtney, her whole life, with part of the agreement in their relationship being a pact made never to date each other's relatives. Unfortunately, Elle has always nursed a crush on Lee's older brother Noah, played by Jacob Elordi. Over the course of a memorable summer,...

‘The Kissing Booth 3’ Filmed in Secret, Will Debut on Netflix in 2021
Image
Just a few days after “The Kissing Booth 2” debuted on Netflix, the streaming service announced a third movie in the teen romance franchise is in the works.

And there’s more good news for Elle (Joey King) and Noah (Jacob Elordi) fans: “The Kissing Booth 3” was secretly shot at the same time as the sequel, so filming is already complete. It’s currently in post-production and will premiere on Netflix in 2021. The entire cast — including King, Joel Courtney, Elordi, Taylor Zakhar Perez and Molly Ringwald — will return for the follow-up.

“It was the hardest secret to keep,” Courtney said Sunday during a live YouTube event with the cast .

Despite negative reviews from critics, “The Kissing Booth” series has been wildly popular among teen audiences at Netflix. After the first film was released in 2018, Netflix reported it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year.

‘Kissing Booth 3’ Shot in Secret, Already in Post-Production and Coming from Netflix in 2021
Image
“The Kissing Booth 2,” the second installment in Netflix’s wildly popular franchise, is currently No. 1 on the streamer’s viewing charts. Riding high off the popularity of the new film and the 2018 original, both directed by Vince Marcello, Netflix has given the go-ahead on a third movie. But perhaps the most exciting piece of news, as reported by Deadline, is that “The Kissing Booth 3” has already finished filming after shooting quietly alongside “Kissing Booth 2” last year in South Africa. Marcello is reported to be currently in post-production on the film, which Netflix will launch sometime in 2021. Netflix confirmed the news to IndieWire.

The news was revealed by star and executive producer Joey King during a live-stream fan event hosted on Sunday. The third film will continue to explore the romantic ups and downs of Elle (King), her boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), and her Bff Lee (Joel Courtney). “The Kissing...

She has been accepted into Harvard, where boyfriend Noah is matriculating, and also Berkeley, where her Bff Lee (Noah’s brother) is headed.

Yes, That's Really Taylor Zakhar Perez's Beautiful Voice in The Kissing Booth 2
Image
Elle has a brand new love interest in The Kissing Booth 2, and he's giving Noah a run for his money. In the Netflix sequel, Elle finds herself drawn to the new guy in school named Marco, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez. Not only is he incredibly attractive and charming, but he's also a musician. Swoon! Throughout the movie, Marco shows off his musical skills as he performs at the Halloween party and on the street. Of course, our main thought after watching the movie was: is that really Perez singing and playing guitar?

The short answer is yes! During an interview with Popsugar, Perez confirmed that he's really performing during those scenes. "I practiced my butt off," he said about the musical moments in the film. "I was super, super lucky to have [the film's director Vince Marcello], who has a crazy amazing musical background, being an actor on Broadway. He was...

New Movies to Watch This Week: ‘Radioactive’ on Amazon, ‘The Kissing Booth 2’ on Netflix
Image
Well, it’s official: Thanks to the coronavirus — and the kind of real-world disaster-movie mayhem that even Hollywood couldn’t invent — summer movie season is canceled. Now that “Tenet” and “Mulan” have both scrapped their summer U.S. theatrical release plans, there’s nothing even remotely resembling a blockbuster on the horizon.

The good news — and there is good news — is that we’re deep enough into this pandemic that distributors have figured out how to release their films virtually, and in some cases, to drive-ins and those few hardtop venues safe (or stubborn) enough to remain open. That means moviegoers can see thrillers “The Rental” and “Amulet,” as well as Vinnie Jones starrer “The Big Ugly,” in select theaters this week, while movie-stayers — those living under lockdown, or simply too cautious to return to cinemas — can order the same movies on demand.

Meanwhile, the streaming services continue to thrive.

‘The Kissing Booth 2’ Review: Netflix’s Ya Hit Gets a Sweeter, Sloppier Sequel
Image
Netflix’s continued forays into the wide world of romantic comedies — wildly popular with film fans, often overlooked by the studio system — has seen plenty of ups and downs. The streaming giant won acclaim for series like “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and one-offs like “Set It Up,” but its romcom picks are just as prone to flaming out as setting the world on fire. While Vince Marcello’s 2018 adaptation of Beth Reekles’ Ya novel “The Kissing Booth” scored big in terms of viewership, critical appraisals were not so kind; with a 17 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is one of Netflix’s worst-reviewed originals.

Critics aside, the streamer gave the people what they want. Joey King returns to star in a sequel to the high school romcom —and

While the first film was rife with sexist rhetoric, casual slut-shaming, and a “bad boy” lead who never...

‘The Kissing Booth 2’: Film Review
Image
From its auspicious beginning as a novel written by then-15-year-old author Beth Reekles on the self-publish site Wattpad, to its wildly popular film debut on Netflix, “The Kissing Booth” has proven itself a hit. It spoke to its target audience without speaking down to them, telling the story of a young woman confronted with the challenge of choosing between a longterm relationship with her male best friend or a budding romance with his hotter older brother. Though its imaginatively named sequel “The Kissing Booth 2” hits similar beats, themes and emotional touchstones, it delivers a few refreshing details by giving the heroine more agency in her quest to find happiness — yet not quite enough to justify its interminable run time.

High school senior Elle Evans (Joey King) has just spent the best summer of her life with her hunky, hot-tempered boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi), basking in the California sun,...

‘Kissing Booth 2’ Filmmakers Give an Inside Look Behind the Opening Montage
Image
Vince Marcello, co-writer and director of “The Kissing Booth 2,” knew he needed an opening scene that quickly updated fans of the original with what Elle (Joey King) did over the summer after high school sweetheart Noah (Jacob Elordi) graduated and left for Harvard. Adding to the degree of difficulty: Marcello had to create visual references to Los Angeles in the sequence, even though the sequel, which hits Netflix on July 24, was shot in South Africa.

“The idea I had was to acquaint you with the character in a really fast way that was fun, energetic and exciting,” explains the director, who used snapshots of time — Elle at the beach, watching TV and working on her college essay — as the couple try to maintain their relationship from afar.

Marcello called on cinematographer Anastas Michos, who framed the first film, to deliver his vision — a flurry of images mixed with music and voiceover.

Director and screenwriter Vince Marcello is also back for the sequel, which is based on The Kissing Booth book series by Beth Reekles. The trailer opens up by raising a big question, with Elle then doing her best to answer that question. We get a recap of what has occurred since the last movie ended, with Elle and Noah happily spending the summer together. But with Noah off at Harvard, things get tricky as she is still stuck finishing out her senior year. ‘Kissing Booth 2’ Coming to Netflix in July
Image
“The Kissing Booth 2,” the sequel to Netflix’s popular teen rom-com, will debut on the streaming service this summer. The follow-up — again starring Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi — drops on Netflix on July 24.

King shared the news Thursday night during a live event on YouTube, where she was joined by fellow cast members to share secrets about the upcoming movie.

“The Kissing Booth” became a breakout hit among teen audiences when it premiered in 2018. At the time, Netflix reported that it was one of its most-rewatched original films that year. Though Netflix rarely provides statistics in context, the company’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos said “The Kissing Booth” was “one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world.”

The original film follows King’s character, a high schooler who runs into trouble when she starts to fall for her best friend’s older brother.

ABC action-adventure series ‘Itch’ casts a spell in Wa

When BBC announcer Simon Mayo wrote a short story for Joe, his then 10-year-old son, he had no agent or publisher and he could not imagine the book turning into a TV series set halfway across the world in Australia.

Mayo’s tome Itch was published in 2012 and optioned the following year by Komixx Entertainment, the film and TV production company with headquarters in London and offices in Los Angeles.

Melanie Halsall, Komixx’s head of development, laboured for years on the project, which chronicles the adventures of Itchingham Lofte, a science-obsessed teenager who pursues the unusual and sometimes dangerous hobby of collecting all the elements on the periodic table.

When he discovers a new element with extraordinary powers he is forced to go on the run to protect it from sinister organisations who want it for their own ends.

Kissing Booth 2 Teaser Reunites Joey King and Joel Courtney for More Netflix Fun
Netflix has announced that The Kissing Booth 2 is officially happening. The streaming platform released a teaser video to get fans excited for the sequel, and it appears to have worked. Last year's adaptation of Beth Reekles was a huge success for Netflix, though it was panned by critics and currently holds a 13% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The streaming giant's Cco Ted Sarandos called the first installment "one of the most-watched movies in the country, and maybe in the world."

Netflix claims that one in three viewers has re-watched The Kissing Booth, which is 30% higher than their normal average of repeat viewings. With that kind of success, it seems like a no-brainer to have the original cast return for The Kissing Booth 2. Vince Marcello (Teen Beach Movie) returns to direct the sequel from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jay Arnold. The project is being produced by Marcello, Michele Weisler, Andrew Cole-Bulgina,...
