Dominic Cooper (“Mamma Mia”) and Sarah Gadon (“A Dangerous Method”) are co-starring in “Cry From The Sea,” a Canadian-Irish movie directed by cinematographer-turned-helmer Vic Sarin (“Cold Comfort”).

The movie, which is currently shooting, is represented in international markets by Cinema Management Group, with WME and Laura Rister handling U.S. rights and Level Film on board as the Canadian distributor.

Penned by Ciaran Creagh (“Parked”), “Cry From The Sea” is set in the aftermath of World War I and the Irish Civil War. It revolves around Seamus Óg Mac Grianna (Cooper), an Irish lighthouse keeper who has created a life of isolation and ritual in penance for a tragedy he feels he should have prevented. Laura Linney, Maggie Smith Make a Pilgrimage to Lourdes in ‘The Miracle Club’ – First Look (Exclusive)

Variety can reveal a first look at Maggie Smith and Laura Linney in the new drama “The Miracle Club,” which has wrapped production in Ireland and is now in post.

The Dublin-shot film, which also stars Kathy Bates, centers on four Dublin women who come together on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Lourdes in France, where they discover the solidarity in their friendship and unveil their own personal miracles.

Directed by Thaddeus O’Sullivan, “The Miracle Club” wrapped over the summer at Ardmore Studios in Dublin.

The film also features Oscar nominee Stephen Rea and up-and-coming star Agnes O’Casey.

Linney most recently starred in the last season of Netflix’s “Ozark,” while Smith was last in “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” where she plays the salty Dowager Countess. Bates starred in the 2020 film “Home,” directed by German actor Franka Potente.

Zdf Studios Boards Charlene McKenna Thriller ‘Clean Sweep,’ Set for Sundance Now and Rte (Exclusive)

Adding to its growing roster of overseas drama titles, Germany’s Zdf Studios has snagged international distribution rights to “Clean Sweep,” a six-part Irish thriller which is set to premiere on Sundance Now and Irish public broadcaster RTÉ.

“Clean Sweep” stars Charlene McKenna, Captain Swing in “Peaky Blinders,” in a crime drama told from the point-of-view of the killer who is also, unusually, a self-sacrificing mother and wife. Filming is now underway.

McKenna, whose credits take in “Bloodlands” and “Vienna Blood,” plays Shelly Mohan, a woman living a quiet life in Western Ireland as a housewife and mother of three who kills her former partner in crime when he threatens to expose her dark past.

Telefilm Canada and Screen Ireland have boarded “Cry From the Sea,” a co-production between Canada’s Sepia Films and Ireland’s ShinAwil, which has been greenlit to shoot in the Fall.

To be directed by Vic Sarin, the romantic drama centers on Edith, an enigmatic American widow who visits an Irish island to be near the spot where her childhood boyfriend drowned during World War I. She meets Seamus, a solitary lighthouse keeper who is at loggerheads with the island locals because of a personal tragedy he blames on them. He bonds with Edith, much to the chagrin of his loyal housekeeper who has silently loved him for years. The resulting love triangle brings unexpected changes that impact all their lives.

U.S. Outfit Cmg Boards Sales Rights To Ireland-Canada Co-Production ‘Cry From The Sea’
Exclusive: U.S. sales firm Cmg, which recently found success with Oscar-nominated box office hit Loving Vincent, has boarded world sales rights to upcoming Ireland-Canada co-production Cry From The Sea.

The deal was inked with Vancouver-based production company Sepia Films and Dublin-based outfit ShinAwiL. Cmg will handle sales in all markets outside of Canada, where LevelFILM is distributing, and Ireland, where Wildcard will release.

The feature is scheduled to begin shooting in Donegal and County Mayo, Ireland in October 2019. Tina Pehme and Kim Roberts of Sepia Films and Larry Bass, Mary Callery, and Aaron Farrell of ShinAwiL are producing.

Canadian director and cinematographer Vic Sarin (A Shine Of Rainbows) will direct the screenplay penned by Irish screenwriter Ciaran Creagh (Parked). The film is being cast by Hubbard Casting, Ros and John Hubbard Csa out of the UK in association with Paul Weber Csa in the U.S.

Irish Producer ShinAwiL Launches Drama Division With Aviation Period Thriller ‘Flying Blind’ & Crime Drama ‘Kill’
Exclusive: Irish producer ShinAwiL has launched a drama division and has set a slate that includes a crime drama from Ballykissangel writer Barry Devlin, a period drama from author Ann-Marie Casey and a tween Canadian co-pro.

The company, which is best known for producing Irish versions of unscripted hits such as Dancing with the Stars and The Voice, has tapped Vikings and The Borgias producer Aaron Farrell to run the unit with Mary Callery, former commissioning editor of drama at Irish public broadcaster Rte.

ShinAwiL is launching its inaugural scripted slate ahead of Series Mania in Lille, France, where it will talk with broadcasters and production partners about its projects.
