‘Clue: A New Comedy’ Stage Play Is a Slapstick Slasher That Lovingly Adapts Hasbro’s Board Game
Image
The national tour of ‘Clue: A New Comedy’ remixes the classic murder mystery with farcical physical comedy and impassioned old-fashioned sensibilities.

“It’s all part of the game.”

There’s a strong relationship between mischievous murder mysteries and the horror genre. Murder mysteries inherently hinge upon death – it’s baked into the name – so it’s not surprising that horror has embraced this secretive subgenre and really emphasized the murder in murder mysteries. Murder mysteries have been popular in pop culture for nearly a century. However, there’s been a recent renaissance on this front with playful films like Knives Out, A Haunting in Venice, Bodies Bodies Bodies, the Scream franchise, and the prominence of the true-crime genre and armchair detectives. That being said, an underrated and evergreen source of murder mystery hijinks that’s entertained audiences for 75 years is Hasbro and Parker Brothers’ Clue.

Clue has experienced many permutations over the years,...

Win Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built on Blu-ray
Inspired by the unnerving true events surrounding the Winchester House, Lionsgate Home Entertainment UK is thrilled to announce that Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built starring Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren will be available to own on Blu-ray & DVD from Monday 28th May. To celebrate, we are giving away 3 copies on Blu-ray.

On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the eccentric firearm heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune, it is a house that knows no end.

Renowned for its enormous size, its architectural curiosities, and its lack of any master building plan, the Winchester house was constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades. It stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms with numerous oddities. To the outsider it looks like a...

We Took a Flashlight Tour of The Winchester Mystery House and This is a Video of Our Spooky Adventure!
This past weekend Lionsgate invited us out to the legendary Winchester Mystery House in San Jose CA where we were treated to a flashlight tour of the house! This was all done as a way to promote the released of the horror film Winchester on Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-ray.

I've been fascinated with the Winchester Mystery House ever since I first learned about it as a kid, so of course, I'm going to jump at the opportunity to take a flashlight tour of this wonderfully creepy house! So, I jumped in my Jeep and took a road trip up to San Jose to hunt some ghosts!

I met up with my friend Jake, who lives up in the area, and he documented our fun and spoooooky adventure and edited together a great little video for your viewing enjoyment! You can watch the video below and if you want, you...

Winchester review
Helen Mirren headlines Winchester, a horror movie that soon loses its way...

Not to be confused with Supernatural brothers Sam and Dean, Winchester is the new film from Michael and Peter Spierig, the duo behind Daybreakers and Predestination, but also last year's Jigsaw. It's a Hammer-style haunted house ghost story that finds Helen Mirren on unusual, scenery chewing form as Sarah Winchester, the widowed heiress to an empire of violence.

Subtitled as The House That Ghosts Built in some territories, this Australian-American co-production finds a very Hammer-esque character, doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke), visiting Sarah's enormous mansion in San Jose, California. He's there to evaluate her mental health on behalf of her board of directors at the Winchester Repeating Arms company, after she has thrown herself and a lot of her money continuing construction on the mansion's eccentric architecture in order to stave off vengeful spirits. Dr. Price, a former soldier,...

Winchester movie review: she hosts dead people
MaryAnn’s quick take… The story of a fascinating woman retold in the most reductive, least resonant way possible, while actually sidelining her. Even cast as a simple haunted-house tale, it’s not even a little bit scary. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women…

I’m “biast” (con): …but this isn’t really about a woman

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film

(learn more about this)

This is definitely true: Sarah Winchester was heir to a fortune that made her one of the richest women in the world in the late 19th century, and a stakeholder in her deceased husband’s family business, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1886, five years after her husband’s death, she moved to San Jose, California, outside San Francisco, and began building a mad warren of a mansion...

Interview: Helen Mirren on her role in the new horror film Winchester
Author: Jon Lyus

Kerry McNally interviews Dame Helen Mirren for her movie Winchester: The House that Ghosts Built in which she stars opposite Jason Clarke.

She recalls having a supernatural experience of her own, “I remember one night, when I was working in Stratford Upon Avon, I was driving home and suddenly, for absolutely no reason I got really frightened. It was like I’d entered a zone of evil – and I’m a very rational person, but it was so vivid!”

She also talked about with Jason Clarke as a “…wonderful actor to work with. He was fantastically contributive. I have a very soft spot in my heart for anyone with an Australian accent!”

And on her character, the enigmatic Sarah Winchester: “As well as building a very eccentric house, Sarah Winchester built in elements that had never been seen before at the time. She also had a...

Helen Mirren at an event for RED 2 (2013)
'Winchester' Review: Real-Life Ghost Story Haunted By Sheer God-Awfulness
Helen Mirren at an event for RED 2 (2013)
It shouldn't happen to anyone, much less a Dame– not a movie of such barreling awfulness as Winchester, which strands thegreat Helen Mirren in a gothic house of cards that collapses on actors andaudiences alike. Dame Helen plays heiress Sarah Lockwood Winchester, a widow who inherited a bundle from her husband William, whose familyfounded the world-famous Winchesterrifle company. Set in 1906, the film – jointly written and directed by thoseAussie twins Michael and Peter Spierig, the one who recently inflicted the Saw sequel Jigsaw on payingcustomers – purports to be "inspired by actual events.

Winchester Review
San Jose’s Winchester mansion is considered one of the most haunted, puzzling architectural achievements in American history. As the name suggests, this labyrinth-crafted structural oddity drew funding from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company – widow Sarah Winchester began construction after her husband and baby passed away and only stopped because of her own death. Legend tells that Sarah continuously remodeled the ever-shifting maze of corridors to help subdue a family curse, as a means of appeasing those souls who’d been gunned down by Winchester weaponry. Sounds like primo haunted house fodder, right? The Spierig Brothers (Peter/Michael) thought so, and thus Winchester was produced.

In their film, Helen Mirren stars as troubled Sarah Winchester – but she’s hardly the focal character. That’d be Eric Price (Jason Clarke), the physician hired by Winchester’s board to evaluate her mental well being. If declared not sound of mind, she’d...

Winchester Review
Author: Linda Marric

Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig and starring Helen Mirren, Winchester is the latest gothic horror offering from the people who brought you, amongst other things, the hugely underrated 2009 film Predestination, an adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s cult sci-fi novel All You Zombies. However, anyone expecting more of the same from the hard working duo’s latest outing would be sorely let down by this deeply muddled and frankly baffling production, which simply fails to deliver on an otherwise great premise.

Set sometime around the turn of the last century, Winchester opens with a laughably predictable “based on a true story” pre-credit title and carries on much in the same fashion with a crash, a bang, and jump-scare until its inevitable denouement, which couldn’t come soon enough.

Helen Mirren is Sarah Winchester, the stern matriarch at the head of the Winchester gun company. Locked in...

Sam and Dean Fans Confuse Winchester for a Supernatural Movie
Lionsgate will roll out its new horror movie Winchester this weekend, which seems to be causing some confusion for fans of the hit CW Network series Supernatural. Even though Supernatural stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles do not appear in the movie, which is based on the true story of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, and the bizarre haunted house she built, there are apparently still some fans who think Winchester is a Supernatural movie, which the Winchester movie's official Twitter account helped clear up with three hilarious tweets, accompanied by brief new promos.

The irony of this Winchester/Winchester joke is that CBS Films produces Winchester, and Supernatural airs on The CW Network, which also falls under the CBS corporate umbrella. Also given how both the Winchester movie and the Supernatural series deal with ghosts and other paranormal entities, it's not surprising why some fans have...

Apparently Some Supernatural Fans Think The New Winchester Movie is Part of the TV Series
Here's a bit of movie confusion that I didn't see coming! Apparently, some fans of the Supernatural TV series think that the upcoming Winchester horror movie is some kind of a spinoff for the series. You know, because of the name Winchester.

There has been so much confusion about this, that Lionsgate felt they needed to release a little statement with their latest promo spot for the film. The promo came with the following note:

No, the brothers do not show up in Winchester. This is a feature-length movie, not a short film and if they teamed up with Sarah the three would wrap things up in minutes.

I think I'm more surprised by how many people aren't familiar with the Winchester Mystery House, which is what the film is based on. Regardless, the movie looks like it's going to great! Did any of you think that this was a Supernatural-type spinoff film?...

Can Winchester Shoot Down Maze Runner 3 at the Box Office?
Last weekend, as expected, 20th Century Fox's Maze Runner finale The Death Cure finally took down Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the box office, and now it only faces minimal competition with just one movie opening in wide release this weekend, Winchester. While this Maze Runner franchise finale didn't post a massive opening, its $24.1 million was more than enough to take down both Jumanji and an expanding Hostiles, and with just one new release, debuting in far fewer theaters, we're predicting that The Maze Runner: The Death Cure, comes out on top again with $14.6 million.

If this prediction is accurate, it will represent roughly a 40% drop in its second weekend for this franchise finale, which is slightly better than the second weekend drop for 2014's The Maze Runner (46.4%) and much better than 2015's The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (56.4%). While this adaptation wasn't exactly a hit with critics,...

On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester gun manufacturing fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an unceasing twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters.

If you've been missing the crazy antics of this hugely popular sketch comedy series that ran for an amazing 14 seasons, you can dry those tears. The CW is planning a MadTV Revival with one major change. It's going to be a prime time series this time out.

Executive producer of the original MadTV, David E. Salzman is returning as showrunner. The show will be produced by Telepictures.

Some Guy Who Kills People and Complexity: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by writer Ryan A. Levin. Director: Jack Perez. Writer: Ryan A. Levin. Cast: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Eric Price, Lucy Davis, and Lou Beatty Jr. Some Guy Who Kills People is a successful film primarily for combining so many genres. Genres noted by this reviewer included: comedy, horror, revenge thriller, romance and family. It is hard for some filmmakers to nail one genre. Writer Ryan A. Levin, director Jack Perez and the rest of the crew bring six genres to life. There are a lot of layers here. There is also a lot of murder. Part serial killer film, Some Guy Who Kills People is more about the humanness of relationships and the struggles inherently therein. The story follows Kenny (Kevin Corrigan). He has recently been released from a psychiatric ward for depression and suicidal tendencies.

Some Guy Who Kills People | Review - Austin Film Festival 2011
Director: Jack Perez Writer: Ryan Levin Starring: Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, Karen Black, Leo Fitzpatrick, Ariel Gade, Lucy Davis, Eric Price, Lou Beatty Jr. Will Kevin Corrigan -- the indie film darling who was rivaled only by Steve Buscemi in his near-infinite number of quirky supporting roles clocked in during the 1990s -- ever live down "that ugly guy" (Walking and Talking) moniker? Probably not -- because as Some Guy Who Kills People's Ken, Corrigan becomes one of the ugliest characters of them all. A 34-year old, socially awkward, sad-sack loser -- oh, and former mental patient -- Ken works at a local ice cream parlor and lives with his disapproving mom (Karen Black). Otherwise, Ken just keeps to himself and sketches fantastical images of himself murdering the high school bullies who tortured him as a teenager, made him suicidal and essentially got him away in the loony bin for god knows how long.

Alpha and Omega Review | Just Another Date-Rapey Wolf Movie
Shall I attempt to feign surprise that Lionsgate's debut in the 3D-animated game has met a wholly disastrous end? After watching Alpha and Omega, I can attest that, much like this movie's titular wolf pack caste system, there's no room for Betas to be found with 3D kiddie flicks -- they either rise to the top or irredeemably kick an audience in the crotch. So yes, there are limits to my recent Despicable Me-inspired optimism regarding wide-open playing fields for studios to challenge territory previously known only to Pixar. With this movie, Lionsgate doesn't even climb out of the sewer with visuals (courtesy of India's Crest Animation) that are, at best, inconsistent and range from lush waterfalls to flat-looking forests. Use of 3D, again, is irregular and tends towards the gimmicky while, inexplicably, ignoring the presumed depth of arboreal features and, instead, placing all focus upon the wolf characters,...

Family Film Guide: 'Alpha and Omega'
Filed under: Features, Family Film Guide

'Alpha and Omega'

Directors: Anthony Bell and Benjamin Gluck

Rated: PG for rude humor and some mild action

Starring: Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Danny Glover, Dennis Hopper

Moviefone Mama Says: Although this Lionsgate and Crest Animation comedy, about two wolves trying to make their way back home, isn't on the same level as Pixar or DreamWorks' animated features, it's an amusing romance-driven animal tale, best suited for middle-graders and up. Kate (Panettiere) and Humphrey (Long) prove that the best relationships aren't based on class or popularity, but on love and friendship. Their journey back home to Canada, after getting whisked off to Idaho to "repopulate" (they don't), isn't all that epic or adventurous, but there are a few funny scenes with a golf-crazed Canadian goose (Larry Miller) and a British duck (Eric Price), whom they meet. There's more sexual innuendo (see "Parent...

Actors Casting Directors Love: Part 1
Ellen Lewis on Michael ShannonWhen I was asked to write about an actor I love, Michael Shannon immediately jumped into my mind. It probably stems from the fact that I'm from Chicago, where Michael lived and worked for many years. In 1998 Paula Muzik, an agent in Chicago, called to tell me about Michael, who was coming to New York in the play "Killer Joe." There was an intensity and disturbing quality to Michael's performance in "Killer Joe." Combined with his physical presence and dark humor, he slightly frightened you. He was unlike any actor I had seen before, and it was exciting to think about the roles one could try him for.Years later I was casting "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" for Sidney Lumet. Sid's office at the time was at Sound One. Casting for Sidney, as other casting directors can attest, is an amazing experience—and unusual,...

MADtv: Late Night Comedy Series Signs Off -- for Now
Tonight marks the final original episode of MADtv, at least on Fox. The network cancelled the show last December after 14 years on the air but that doesn't mean that the troupe is leaving gracefully.

The oft-ignored late-night comedy show has been a staple of some Saturday night rituals for nearly a generation. Current cast members include Crista Flanagan, Keegan-Michael Key, Bobby Lee, Arden Myrin, Nicole Parker, Johnny Sanchez, Erica Ash, Eric Price, Lauren Pritchard, and Matt Braunger.

This evening's swan song brings back alumni Alex Borstein, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, and Debra Wilson Skelton, and also features comic actor Fred Willard and stand-up comedian Artie Lang. In the spoof of American Idol's fundraising efforts, Willard hosts a telethon called "MADtv Gives Back."

Executive producer David Salzman tells the Daily News, "We tried to come up with a finale that is in keeping with MADtv's irreverent and un-self-serving way of doing things.

MADtv: Cast Gearing up for the TV Show's Big Finale
With the long-running pop culture parody show set to end on May 16th, the jokers over at MADtv are going all out to make the final episodes worthy of the show's 14 year history.

As you may recall, Fox announced that they were pulling the plug on the sketch-comedy series back in November. The timing of the news gave the cast and crew time to craft some final episodes. The current cast includes Erica Ash, Matt Braunger, Crista Flanagan, Keegan-Michael Key, Bobby Lee, Arden Myrin, Nicole Parker, Eric Price, Lauren Pritchard, and Johnny Sanchez.

Heading in to the finale, upcoming episodes are looking back on some of MADtv's crazier sketches and moments.

Tonight's episode will spotlight the popular Coach Hines (Keegan-Michael Key) character as he bids farewell to his favorite punching bag students, Yamanashi (Lee) and Jericho (Braunger). Also, Lee once again tries to win the heart of fellow player Flanagan.
