Underrated 90's Anime That Deserve a Modern Remake
Image
There were several anime shows and franchises that hit big in the 1990s, with this era being seen by many as the start of the medium's international dominance. This saw brands such as Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Pokmon become the juggernauts that they still are to this day. There were also several beloved yet somewhat overlooked shows that might need a second iteration to receive their due respect.

The 1990s had a host of anime that would be perfect for modern remakes, especially since this concept has become more common in recent years. These include mecha and cyberpunk classics to kid-friendly works and a drift racing gem. Removed from some of the constraints of their original eras, these shows could find new life with modern incarnations.

10 Best Anime With Hip Hop Soundtracks
Image
Anime & hip-hop share history in themes of adversity, the quest for greatness, and oppressed people speaking their truth. Music, especially hip-hop, enhances anime's storytelling & emotional impact. Anime blends with hip-hop elements in soundtracks, showcasing unique creative connections.

Despite their apparent differences, anime and hip-hop share a long and intimate history. Both are rich in themes of overcoming adversity, tales of ordinary people achieving greatness, and instances of the oppressed speaking truth to power. There is a good reason artists like Megan Thee Stallion are big anime fans. While the connection between the two is most obvious in anime themed around hip-hop, it's also observable in the large and growing population of anime shows incorporating hip-hop elements in their musical soundtracks.

While anime is first and foremost a visual storytelling medium, music - mainly in the form of anime soundtracks - has become a vital element in creating mood, influencing emotion,...

Initial D Releases Car-Inspired Eyeglasses
Image
Initial D is releasing a stylish new set of eyeglasses as part of its latest merchandise collaboration.

Yabushita, a company dedicated to eyewear, recently unveiled its official "Initial D AE86 Image Glasses" on its main website. As the name suggests, they feature a design inspired by the vehicle of main protagonist, Takumi Fujiwara, who drives a modified Toyota Sprinter AE86 in the series. Due to the specialized design, the glasses can be worn for either fashion or utility, as the lenses can be switched out by an optician. Currently, the reference retail price, including tax, is 25,300 yen (roughly US$166). Prospective buyers will be able to purchase them starting in March 2024.

Sung Kang to Direct Live Action Initial D Film

Sung Kang, the Korean-American actor best known for his role as Han Lue in the Fast & Furious franchise, has revealed that he will be directing a live action film based on the popular manga and anime series Initial D. The announcement was made during his podcast Car Stories with Sung Kang and Emelia Hartford, where he discussed his passion for cars and drifting1.

Initial D is a Japanese comic series created by Shuichi Shigeno that follows the exploits of Takumi Fujiwara, a young tofu delivery driver who becomes a legendary street racer in his father’s Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86. Mf Ghost Vs. Initial D
Image
One of the most iconic anime of the 1990s and early 2000s is Initial D – it's even recognized by non-anime fans. The classic drift racing series quickly became a firm part of the international anime landscape, thanks in part to its somewhat jarring use of early CGI and its pulse-pounding Eurobeat soundtrack. Despite how enduring the property has been throughout the decades, its mostly overlooked sequel hasn't raced to the same type of success.

Mf Ghost began publication in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine in 2017, over 20 years after its predecessor started. Unfortunately, it hasn't had nearly as much mainstream success or recognition as Initial D, however. This stems from the quality of the work itself to how much the first series was a product of its time. Now that Mf Ghost is getting an anime adaptation, its relation to Initial D and comparative lack of success is worth exploring.

Anime: 'Initial D' Manga To End After 18 Years As New Anime Film Looms
Before Vin Diesel's "Fast & Furious" franchise, there was "Initial D." Our Japanese brethren have been drifting long before Dominic Toretto ever flipped the switch on his first nitro boost. Both car franchises are known for adrenaline induced testosterone visuals but sadly, one is coming to an end next week. Shuichi Shigeno's manga will end on July 19th after 46 manga volumes, 4 anime series, 2 OVAs, 3 animated films, 9 video games, and 1 live-action film. The story follows Japanese teen Takumi Fujiwara and his Eight-Six (Toyota Sprinter AE86 Trueno) as he enters the world of illegal street racing and eventually move into professional racing. The manga's final volume will be adapted into a new anime series titled "Initial D: The Final Stage" which currently has an undisclosed release date. Next summer a new anime film will also be released titled "New Initial D: The Movie." Related...
