Van Gaal hails 'efficient' Netherlands win against Senegal
Image
Doha, Nov 22 (Ians) Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal admitted he was not entirely satisfied after his team produced a late burst to beat Senegal 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup Group A match on Monday.

The Netherlands dominated for long stages of the first half but lacked a cutting edge in the final third at the Thumama Stadium. Senegal had several clear scoring chances in the second half before Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen struck in the last 15 minutes for the Dutch.

“It was an efficient victory,” Van Gaal told a post-match press conference. “We played the first half with poor decision-making when carrying the ball. But we still created five chances. In the second half the match was more balanced … (but) I was quite calm because I always had the feeling we would score.”

Van Gaal, who replaced Frank de Boer as Netherlands manager in June 2021, said his players benefitted from superior fitness,...

FIFA World Cup Group A preview: Netherlands set for big-stage return
Image
Rio de Janeiro, Nov 8 (Ians) What is a seemingly innocuous World Cup opening phase for the Netherlands promises to be one of trials and tribulations for Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar. While the Oranje are tipped by many to breeze through their first three fixtures, much less is expected of their Group A rivals.

Senegal have not progressed to the knockout rounds since 2002. Ecuador last did it in 2006. Qatar have never done so as they make their first World Cup appearance. The Netherlands will be determined to reassert themselves on football’s biggest stage after their absence from the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Here is a Xinhua’s breakdown of the four teams in Group A, which kicks off on November 20 when Qatar and Ecuador meet in Al Khor.

The Netherlands

Having failed to qualify for the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands are back among Europe’s elite.

Netherlands, Austria, England start with wins in Euro 2020
Image
Amsterdam, June 14 (Ians) Gritty Ukraine bounced back from two goals down but Denzel Dumfries's late winner helped the Netherlands snatch a 3-2 win on home soil in Euro 2020 on Sunday.

The third match-day also saw Austria overpower North Macedonia 3-1 and England down Croatia 1-0.

The Dutch, also known as 'Elftal' assumed control from the starting whistle, and they should have got the opener early in the game but Memphis Depay, Dumfries and Georginio Wijnaldum lacked in accuracy, Xinhua reports.

The 16,000 spectators at the Amsterdam Johan Cruijff Arena saw a powerful performance from the Dutch, yet they remained wasteful.

After the interval, the hosts were eventually able to turn their chances into rewards.

Ukraine goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan blocked a cross into the path of Wijnaldum, who rifled the opener from 13 metres into the top left corner seven minutes into second half.

Frank de Boer's men gained momentum and made...

End of Summer (2017) by Quan Zhou
Frank de Boer strides. The ball lazily at his feet with direction. Suddenly vision. A long, fifty metre pass. The right foot of Dennis Bergkamp in the Argentina penalty area. Control. Dead. The second touch. The ball bounces behind behind Roberto Ayala. The right foot scoops. The ball curves passed Carlos Roa. The net bulges. The arms raised.

Twenty years on from that Bergkamp goal and France’s destruction of Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final, all eyes are on Russia to see who will capture football’s greatest prize. Quan Zhou’s debut feature looks back at the summer of ’98 and the developing friendship between a young boy and his elderly and lonely neighbour in a small Chinese town, with the odd football reference thrown in.

End of Summer is screening at the 17th New York Asian Film Festival

David Moyes Denies He Will Be Next Newcastle Boss
Daniel Ochoa de Olza/AP

David Moyes has denied that is in line to become the next Newcastle United head coach despite reports claiming he is due to take over at St James’ Park this summer.

The former Manchester United manager only moved to Spain to become Real Sociedad boss in November and Moyes has now stated he is “not going anywhere” this summer.

Reports in the Daily Star claimed Moyes had already agreed to become Magpies boss, and that he would take over the reins from interim head coach John Carver at the end of the season.

Scott Heppell/AP

But Moyes has moved to dispel those rumours and reiterate his commitment to Sociedad. He told the Guardian on Wednesday:

“I’ll be here (at Sociedad next season). I’m not going anywhere.

“I’m going to be here. I want to try to get everything in place so...

Nufc In Talks With St Etienne Head Coach Christophe Galtier
David Vincent/AP

Newcastle United continue to search for a new head coach in spite of their fight against relegation – and Saint Etienne boss Christophe Galtier has returned to the top of their wanted list.

The Magpies spoke with Galtier in January after tracking the 49-year-old for some time – and now reports in France claim they are in “discussions” with the Ligue 1 head coach.

French paper Mercato claims the Magpies have contacted Galtier and that they have lined him up as the man to take over on Tyneside should they remain in the Premier League.

Laurent Cipriani/AP

A French League Cup winner in 2013, Galtier has worked wonders on a modest budget at St Etienne and he led the club to fourth in Ligue 1 last season. This has not gone unnoticed with the powers that be at Newcastle, with managing director Lee Charnley and head scout Graham Carr both believed to be keen admirers.

Frank De Boer Distances Himself From Nufc Job
Peter Dejong/AP

Frank de Boer has once again distanced himself from the Newcastle United head coach’s role – with the Ajax boss’ agent claiming he is “happy” in Holland.

Guido Albers also revealed that, although a number of clubs from around Europe had contacted Ajax about De Boer’s availability, the Magpies were not one of them.

Newcastle have been looking for a head coach since Alan Pardew left for Crystal Palace at the turn of the year – with John Carver taking control on an interim basis until the end of the season. Although Carver wants the job, he has won just two matches since and the Magpies have been dragged into a relegation fight.

Michel Euler/AP

De Boer’s decision to commit to Ajax comes just a day after Derby County boss Steve McClaren revealed he turned down the chance to become Newcastle boss for the final three matches of the season.

Steve McClaren Expected To Become Nufc Boss
Richard Sellers/Empics Sport

Two imminent sets of crisis talks at two separate football clubs in separate leagues could determine the future of Newcastle United.

Widespread media reports claim that Derby County will hold talks with boss Steve McClaren over his future following The Rams missing out on the Championship play-offs on the final day of the campaign yesterday.

Meanwhile, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has reportedly demanded immediate talks today with struggling head coach John Carver after perhaps the most demoralising display in the Magpies’ entire history saw them surrender meekly to Leicester City yesterday, with the added self-harm of seeing two experienced players plunge the club into a defensive crisis at the worst possible time.

If a scenario plays out where both the owners of Derby and Newcastle want rid of their current managerial occupiers then it seems highly likely that McClaren finds himself in an emergency appointment at St.

Why Newcastle Fans Should Be Anxious Over Alan Pardew’s Replacement
Owen Humphreys/Pa Wire

Although Newcastle fans may have got their dream present this Christmas with Alan Pardew’s impending exit from St. James’ Park, a troubling anxiety over what happens next has crept in. “Sack Pardew” may have been the cry for months but few would have been able to tell you who should be in charge instead. The focus was so aggressive on Pardew out that nobody even thought about what the follow-up would be if it actually happened.

Even the bookies don’t quite know what the future holds. The “odds on favourite” has changed frequently and randomly. Frank de Boer, the early favourite, was quickly dismissed as a non-starter when representatives said he wouldn’t leave Ajax this season. Next favourite, Tony Pulis, looks now to be West Brom bound… any chance of Newcastle hiring the former Palace manager ending when Ashley stalled on him (likely...

Newcastle: Siem De Jong Not Sure When He Will Be Fit

Just days ago missing man Siem De Jong confirmed on Twitter that his rehabilitation has set January as the target for his return to the first team picture, but it looks like the number 10 is unsure of exactly how his progress is going. Thanks to his Twitter, we do know that he has a couple more weeks on crutches, which is an indication of how far he has to come.

Spurs: 10 Things Pochettino Must Do To Make His Side A Force Next Season
Chris Ison/Pa Wire/Press Association Images

The announcement of Mauricio Pochettino becoming the new head coach of Spurs on May 27th was met with a mixed response, somewhat inevitably for a club that has a track record of recent failure in hiring bosses. After all, the admittedly talented coach has only had fourteen months of managerial experience in England and was at a team lower in the league than the club themselves, so the indicators for success weren’t exactly as obvious as the likes of Frank De Boer or Louis Van Gaal.

After an underwhelming season which involved £100 million+ on new players who struggled to gel, a minimal net spend and the trials and tribulations of having Andre Villas Boas and Tim Sherwood as head coaches, the pressure will be on for the Argentinian to do well at Tottenham. And he will have to be so quickly.

Spurs Fans: Who Do You Want As The New Manager?
Nick Potts/Pa Wire

Arguably the hottest topic of football discussion in the English domestic game at the moment – particularly since the vacant Manchester United management position was filled by Louis van Gaal – is the ongoing saga at White Hart Lane regarding who will become the new Tottenham Hotspur manager.

Tim Sherwood was relieved of his duty as Spurs boss on the 13th of May this year, after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in December, and he guided the club to a disappointing sixth place finish in the Premier League despite having the best wins-to-games ratio of any Spurs boss in the modern era. Since his sacking, a list of potential candidates that includes the likes of Frank de Boer, Mauricio Pochettino, Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Martinez have been linked with the role.

The new manager will be Spurs’ eighth (including Clive Allen’s brief stint as caretaker...

Spurs New Manager: Glen Hoddle Backs Mauricio Pochettino
Media Image Ltd

Tottenham Hotspur legend Glenn Hoddle has given Southampton’s Argentinian boss Mauricio Pochettino his backing to potentially replace Tim Sherwood as manager at White Hart Lane.

The former England and Spurs boss made 377 league appearances for the Lilywhites and enjoys legendary status at White Hart Lane, but he has recently been critical of affairs at the club, including Sherwood’s public shaming of Spurs’ players after their emphatic Premier League loss against Chelsea and the impact of the influx of players who were brought in to the club last summer following the sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.

Hoddle himself has said that he came close to retaking the reins at White Hart Lane following Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal in December of last year, but he has now taken to giving his support to Pochettino in spite of other potential candidates that are said to include Frank de Boer and Rafa Benitez.

Spurs New Manager: Could Frank De Boer Replace Avb?
Media Image Ltd

Ajax Head Coach Frank De Boer is at the top of Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial shortlist to replace Andre Villas Boas, and they have approached him, according to The Mirror.

The Dutchman is said to be the ideal candidate for Director of Football Franco Baldini philosophy of developing young players and playing stylish football, as well as having a very successful career as both a player and a manager.

There are still questions over whether De Boer’s assistant Dennis Bergkamp, a legend for bitter North London rivals Arsenal, could be part of the plans and should he have any interest.

Chairman Daniel Levy is said to be willing to give temporary man in charge Tim Sherwood a crack at the job, but following Wednesday night’s Capital One Cup defeat to West Ham, it could prove to be a risky move and a more experienced man could be needed,...

Spurs New Manager: 5 Reasons Why Glen Hoddle Should Replace Avb
Media Image Ltd

Tottenham are on the hunt for a new manager after the increasingly inevitable departure of Andre Villas-Boas was confirmed in the wake of the chastening 5-0 home defeat to Liverpool. The manager was summoned to an emergency meeting after the loss, and his departure by mutual consent was announced.

There are many possible options for Daniel Levy to turn to, and the Spurs chairman is under huge pressure to get this appointment right after the expensive failure of Avb. Michael Laudrup, Frank De Boer and Fabio Capello have been mentioned as potential successors, but one who could surprise a few onlookers is ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, who has been touted by BBC pundit Gary Lineker.

Hoddle has not managed at Premier League level since leaving Spurs themselves in 2003. His reign ended in disappointment, leaving Spurs in the relegation zone with four points from their six opening games.

10 Great Footballers Who Made Terrible Managers
There is often a preconception that a great player will make a great manager because of the knowledge he has built up during his time as a player, and there are some cases where a great player does turn into a great or successful manager such as Kenny Dalglish, Pep Guardiola, Frank de Boer and Michael Laudrup, but often the best managers tend to be those who had limited success as a player. Arguably the two best managers in the world – Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho – did very little in their playing careers but are seen as the definition of success.

Great players often get better managerial jobs earlier than their lesser renowned counterparts because of their name recognition and influence within the game, but for high profile players it can often be best to start at a smaller club with less exposure and pressure.

Some of the very greatest...

Newcastle Transfer News: Vurnon Anita To Have Medical After Agreeing Terms
Newcastle United have agreed personal terms with Vurnon Anita as the versatile Ajax player arrived from Amsterdam today to put the finishing touches on his move to the Premier League.

Nufc.com reports that only a medical and other formalities of the move are to be concluded before the deal for the Dutch international is finalised.

At this point, it is looking like the 23-year-old will be a Newcastle United player before the end of the week and could yet be available for selection for Saturday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.

Magpies fans will be relieved that their club have finally made a breakthrough in the transfer market this summer for one of their big targets. After missing out on bringing in Luuk De Jong (who moved from Twente to Borussia Mochengladbach) and Andy Carroll (who could yet make a move before the end...

Newcastle Transfer News: Fee Agreed For Ajax Star Vurnon Anita
According to multiple sources including SkySports, Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Ajax for defensive utility man Vurnon Anita, potentially bringing a positive end to one of the club’s extended transfer sagas of this summer after a relatively quiet time for the Magpies.

Alan Pardew is said to have been chasing Anita, who can play in defensive midfield or at left-back, for a good deal of the summer, and that interest has now been shored up with a bid which has reportedly been accepted by his current club Ajax. Reports in Holland have suggested that the deal is around the €8million (£6.2million) mark, and the player will now head to Tyneside on Monday to undergo a medical ahead of the deal’s completion.

23-year-old Anita, has been looking for a move away from Ajax for some time, having spent 13 years with the club, and has recently rejected the...

Man Utd Transfer News: Christian Eriksen in Talks Over Old Trafford Move
Manchester United are in talks to sign Ajax sensation Christian Eriksen, according to Dutch source Sport1.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is reportedly in talks with the Red Devils about coming to the Premier League as Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted defeat in his attempts to sign Real Madrid bound Luka Modric and Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

Ferguson has been watching Eriksen for some time as the Danish international has rose to prominence in the Dutch league. He ha scored 16 goals and provided 35 assists in two seasons at the Amsterdam Arena, securing the Eredivisie titles on back-to-back occasions and becoming one of Europe’s most promising young talents.

Ajax boss Frank De Boer already believes he is fighting a losing battle in trying to keep Eriksen in Holland and he is already lining up Az’s impressive midfielder Adam Maher as a possible replacement. Eriksen believes he has achieved everything...

Frank De Boer Doesn’t Want To Be Liverpool Manager
Ajax manager Frank de Boer has insisted he wants to stay in Amsterdam, ruling out any chance of him becoming the next Liverpool boss.

The 42-year-old Dutchman has been linked with the Anfield vacancy following Kenny Dalglish’s sacking last week after the Reds’ worst league finish for 18 years.

That is in contrast to De Boer’s back-to-back Eredivisie title wins in Holland that has once again propelled Ajax to the top of Dutch football. Despite his domestic success since his appointment two years ago, De Boer says he still has unfinished at Ajax and wants to make the club a giant of European football once again.

He told De Telegraaf;

“I am honoured by the request, but I am only just getting started with Ajax,” De Boer told De Telegraaf.

“In Amsterdam we are on a new path and, along with the club and Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp,...

Real Madrid v Ajax – Champions League Preview
Date: Tuesday 27 September 2011

Kick off: 7:45pm

Location: Santiago Bernabeu

Competition: UEFA Champions League

Watch Live: Red Button on Sky Sports HD

Real Madrid are back to winning ways as they won on the weekend 6-2 against Rayo. Mourinho’s men were having a torrid time as they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Levante just a fortnight ago. They could be making it two wins out of two if they win tonight against the Dutch champions as they beat Dinamo Zagreb in their first game reasonably comfortably. Madrid are the favourites to qualify in their group which is Group D. They were drawn with Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb who they beat in their first match, French giants Lyon who they still are yet to face and Ajax who they play tonight. Realistically Mourinho should be aiming for a victory especially as they are at home and...
