John Ford was born March 1915 in Cardiff, Wales and was brought up in Kensington, London.

After attending Westminster School, he studied acting at RADA.

In 1936, he met fellow actor Jean Winstanley, whilst they were understudying the leading roles in John Geilgud's Shakepearian production of Romeo Juliet and they married three months later.

He acted in Ian Hay's new play The Housemaster at The Apollo Theatre London opening on November 12 1936

John Ford played the part of Ibrahim in the film 'His Lordship' (1936).

In 1937, he acted in the Shakespearean play, Richard II at the Queen's Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London alongside: John Gielgud, Leon Quartermaine, Michael Redgrave, Glen Byam Shaw,Dorothy Green, Anthony Quayle, Alec Guinness,Dennis Price, Harry Andrews, George Howe, Peggy Ashcroft, Frederick Lloyd, Ernest Hare, Hereward Russell, Peter Whitehead, Pardoe Woodman, Denis Carew, Alastair Bannerman, Harcourt Williams, Merula Salaman, Genevieve Jessel, Barbara Dillon, George Devine, Harry Andrews

He retired from acting to study at Lincoln Theological College, taking up Holy Orders in various parishes in Cumberland.
