15 Best DC Animated Movies (That Aren’t About Superman or Batman)
Image
DC has a long history of animated adaptations. They range from TV shows to full-length feature films and even popular video game franchises. The DC Universe plans to add more animated shows, including the recent Creature Commandos. Unfortunately, most of its animated features focus entirely on either Batman or Superman.

While Batman and Superman are iconic figures, finding any DC content that does not revolve around them is a challenge. Wonder Woman has a few specials, but most characters struggle to stand out by themselves. Thankfully, some DC animated movies focus on characters besides the two legendary heroes.

Updated February 11, 2025, by Anthony Jeanetta. DC’s animation team remains one of the most consistent producers of quality superhero movies. This list has been updated to include more of the best DC animated movies that aren’t about Superman or Batman.

'Watchmen: Chapter 2' Ending, Explained: Is This a New Beginning?
Image
The original Watchmen graphic novel was first published monthly through 1986 and 1987, before being compiled into a single volume in 1987. The comic was written by famed author Alan Moore, illustrated by artist Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics. In the years since, Watchmen has had three major adaptations – a theatrical live action film directed by Zack Snyder in 2009, an HBO miniseries set in the universe of the comic in 2019, and most recently, an animated two-part film released this year.

This newest adaptation was directed by Brandon Vietti and produced by Warner Brothers. It’s not the first adaptation and is almost certainly not going to be the last, but it is the first that feels like the graphic novel given motion and is the most accurate adaptation of the original work to date.

Rorschach, a once hero turned vigilante, begins an unsanctioned investigation into the odd death of The Comedian, a government superhero. As he begins to uncover pieces of the mystery, he and his retired colleagues, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan, and Ozymandias are forced to face the secrets of their past and one another with the safety of the world at stake as war creeps closer.

Katee Sackoff Breaks Down Laurie Juspeczyk's Arc In Watchmen Chapter 1
Image
The animated adaptation stays true to the original Watchmen comics, capturing the complex characters' struggle and dark truths. Katee Sackhoff connected with Laurie's vulnerability and pain, bringing authenticity to her character in Watchmen Chapter 1. There are no plans for Battlestar Galactica to come back after the reboot fell apart, but Sackhoff remains open to new opportunities.

'Phenomenal Interpretation': Watchmen's Katee Sackhoff Praises Zack Snyder's Movie
Image
Watchmen Chapter 1 is the latest film adaptation of the characters created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Before the first installment of the two-part animated movie, director Zack Snyder released a live-action version in 2009.

While Snyder's film received a mixed response from viewers, Katee Sackhoff, who voices Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II in Watchmen Chapter 1, said the live-action adaptation prompted her to join the animated feature. "Zack Snyder's was a phenomenal interpretation," the actor told ComicBook. "I loved it. I loved it. It's part of why I wanted to do this, because it inspired me. I think that for fans of the book, this, this feels important, this feels true to the storytelling. That's what, I think, people will love about it. I think they'll really enjoy this."

‘Watchmen: Chapter 1’ Review: The ‘Citizen Kane’ of Superhero Comics Is Now an Adequate Animated Movie
Alan Moore
It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when people said Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ “Watchmen” would be impossible to film. After all, it was the “Citizen Kane” of superhero comics, a marriage of inventive storytelling, critical commentary and visual ingenuity that capitalized on the unique artistic possibilities of its medium. Not to mention that it would be expensive as hell to make and, if adapted faithfully, rated “R” — a doubly dicy proposition in the Hollywood studio system.

But that was then and this is now. Zack Snyder brought “Watchmen” to the big screen 15 years ago with a well-intentioned but overblown adaptation that was respectful to the material until it wasn’t, altering a single, load-bearing plot point that made the whole story collapse. After decades of anticipation, that movie came and went, more or less failing to make the impact on superhero cinema the way...

Watchmen Chapter 1 Might Have this Summer's Most Underrated Cast - Main Image

It's a shame that a lot of Watchmen fans seemingly aren't giving the upcoming animated DC flick a chance, especially considering how underrated the voice cast of Watchmen: Chapter 1 is.

Without further ado, check out the stellar cast and meet the voices behind the animated outlaw vigilantes that brought them to life!

Rorschach aka Walter Kovacs

Set in 1985, outlaw superhero Rorschach was the first of the bunch to discover the death of one of their former members and began his investigation as to who could be conspiring behind their deaths.

Rorschach aka Walter Kovacs is voiced by Titus Welliver, who previously lent his voice to both Marvel and DC: Agent Felix Blake in Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Carmine Falcone in Batman: The Long Halloween Parts One and Two.

Watchmen Chapter I Clip Recreates Two Big Scenes From Alan Moore And Dave Gibbons' Iconic Graphic Novel
Image
Plenty of big news came out of this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, including the first clip for Watchmen Chapter I, Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.

That divisive CG animation style is on full display as Dr. Manhattan is welcomed to The Benny Anger Show. He's confronted by several angry audience members who demand the all-powerful superhero answer for the supposed role he may have played in the people he's crossed paths with over the years being diagnosed with cancer.

As all of this is happening, we see Nite Owl and Silk Spectre - in their civilian guises - fending off an attack from criminals. Everything we see looks like the graphic novel and, unsurprisingly, Zack Snyder's 2009 Watchmen movie (which itself was a near shot-for-shot remake of the source material).

With that in mind, we can't help but wonder what...

We all know the immortal question: "Who watches the Watchmen?" And twice over now, the answer has been, well, us. First with Zack Snyder's epic three-hour adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal superhero satirising comic book run back in 2009, and again with Damon Lindelof's stunning 2019 sequelisation of the source material. Watchmen Chapter I Red-Band Trailer Released Along With Full Cast List And Blu-ray Cover Art
Image
The first trailer for Watchmen Chapter I has been released, and with that comes the full voice cast for Warner Bros. Animation's R-Rated adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic graphic novel.

It's also been confirmed today, courtesy of IGN (who have also shared cover art for the He release), that the movie will debut on Digital on August 13, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release following on August 27.

As with Zack Snyder's 2009 movie, it looks like the comic has come to life, begging the question of what this latest version will deliver that its live-action predecessor didn't. The Man of Steel helmer did take some liberties with the source material, though, so perhaps this version will be even more faithful.

Gael García Bernal in Werewolf by Night (2022)
Werewolf By Night Review: A Major Turning Point for Marvel’s Disney+ Formula
Gael García Bernal in Werewolf by Night (2022)
This review contains Werewolf By Night spoilers

After no less than 15 Phase Four MCU projects, Marvel’s Werewolf By Night has arrived on Disney+ as a one-off curiosity, and the “special presentation”, directed by acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino, is refreshingly free from many of the pressures associated with Marvel’s other live-action TV endeavors.

There’s been no mandate to stretch this tale out over six-to-nine episodes. There’s little in the way of reliance on CG or green screen effects. Nor is there any urge to connect the plot to upcoming MCU stories. It simply is. That feels like a smart choice for this entry into the cinematic universe, which has been struggling to find its feet since wrapping The Infinity Saga in 2019.

The action centers on Gael García Bernal’s Jack Russell – bless them for unashamedly sticking with the original name – a sweet-natured lycanthrope in control of his inner monster,...

Review: Constantine: City of Demons
John Constantine, done right, is one of DC Comics’ strongest characters. The current incarnation in the Rebirth universe is a pale comparison to his Vertigo roots and the NBC series didn’t push the horrific elements far enough. Matt Ryan’s wonderful interpretation has been further watered down for the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, so hearing him in all his weary glory in Constantine: City of Demons is most welcome.

This is one of the best animated adaptations of a comic book character, thanks to letting it be an R-rated film ensuring the horror/supernatural elements were true to the source material and not just curse words tossed in for “authenticity”. Kudos to J.M. DeMatteis for bringing Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, and John Totleben’s character to proper life. His original script loosely adapts Hellblazer: All His Engines graphic novel by Mike Carey and Leonardo Manco.

DVD Review: Planet Hulk
Planet Hulk is yet another entry in the long line of straight to DVD/Blu-ray, animated features starring famous comic book characters in stories that might be a little too big for a studio to actually pull off with a live action format. They give fans stories they want and are usually pretty good. This time around writer Greg Pak’s story Planet Hulk is translated right from the comics onto film and it’s actually pretty good.

The Planet Hulk saga was a comic book arch a few years ago about The Hulk being shot into space by a group of super heroes who thought Hulk was just too dangerous to have around. When the film starts, Hulk is already on a rocket heading out into space and is awoken with the news that Iron Man, Namor, Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and even Professor X are the people responsible.

'Planet Hulk' Review
"Planet Hulk," the latest animated feature from Marvel Studios and Lionsgate Home Entertainment, hits shelves today with a story inspired by one of the character's most popular story arcs in recent years.

Based on Greg Pak's 2006-2007 arc in the "Incredible Hulk" comic book series, "Planet Hulk" finds Marvel's green goliath transported to a harsh planet where he's enslaved and forced to compete in gladiatorial combat under the brutal rule of The Red King. Weakened by the journey through space, Hulk must rely on his savage instincts to survive the new environment, and eventually finds himself leading a rag-tag group of fellow gladiators.

"Planet Hulk" is directed by Sam Liu ("Superman/Batman: Public Enemies") with a screenplay by Greg Johnson ("Doctor Strange"). This review is based on the Two-Disc Special Edition DVD. Oh, and Spoiler Warning!

The Good: While the "Planet Hulk" movie takes liberties with its comic book source material,...

Planet Hulk Smashes Through Los Angeles
The Marvel universe has been an important universe to the film world, as shown by the box office receipts to Marvel Studios' live-action summer blockbusters like Iron Man and many others. The studio is also making a dent in the animation field as well, with its successful brand of straight-to-dvd Marvel Animated Features and the latest to hit (or smash) onto the shelves is Planet Hulk, which will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 2.

To celebrate this latest release, a red-carpet premiere event was held at the Paley Center for Media, simultaneously at both Paley venues in Los Angeles and New York. I was able to hit the red carpet for this event to talk to some of the key players behind this release, and the first one down the line was supervising producer Joshua Fine, who started out by telling us how this project got off the ground.
