"The Walking Dead" and its assorted spin-offs have presided over the small screen segment of the zombie genre for a very long time. Typically, characters in any project involving the, well, walking dead have the life expectancy of a mayfly, so even more impressive than the franchise's longevity is the fact that a handful of series originals are still hanging on to their post-apocalyptic existence in various corners of the land, keeping their respective shows alive.
Yes, despite the fact that the mortality rate among the show's characters is extremely high for obvious reasons, a precious few have indeed managed to make it to the present with their lives intact. Granted, the paths they've taken are wildly different. Some of them have taken extended periods of leave from the show, while others started out as fairly inconsequential season 1 figures and only rose in prominence later down the line. Still, there's...

Oh, Andrea. If there's any character who "The Walking Dead" television series fumbled worse, I can't think of them. The Andrea of comics was one of the longest lasting and most beloved characters in the series, whereas Laurie Holden's version of Andrea in the TV show was despised. It's easy to draw a line from the dislike of her character to her early death in the season 3 finale, "Welcome to the Tombs."
Andrea's "Walking Dead" season 3 arc was invented for the show whole cloth, and a major departure from the comics. She winds up at Woodbury, the seemingly normal town run by the Governor (David Morrissey). Andrea clings to the illusion of the pre-apocalyptic world, so much so that she spends a whole half-season refusing to return to her friends. Her loyalty to Woodbury bites her. She gets a goodbye to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), then...

The Walking Dead ran for eleven seasons on AMC, spawning several spinoff shows. It was based on a comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, which made the series a favorite among the comic fandom. Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes played the central protagonist for nine seasons, but other characters also grew on the audience over time.
One of the characters who was introduced late into the show was Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the antagonist, Negan. He was introduced in the final episode of Season 6, when the season ended on a major cliffhanger. Negan is introduced as the leader of the Saviors, a vast organization of survivors who were the antagonists beginning from the second half of the sixth season.

Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard’s novel series The Walking Dead is based on AMC’s post-apocalyptic horror drama The Walking Dead. Developed by Frank Darabont, the series that features a large ensemble cast received critical appreciation upon release and concluded after eleven seasons.
There are numerous reasons why The Walking Dead was one of the most beloved shows, including the fact that it had some of the strongest women characters. The fact that villains are as complex as heroes makes one want to watch it. The most fascinating aspect of the show has been the character struggling to cope with extraordinary circumstances. Fans have, however, been curious about one unusual thing on the show: the Walkers’ hair.

HBO has a reputation for being the king of television, but over the years, it's let some great shows slip through its hands. The network passed on "Breaking Bad" in what creator Vince Gilligan once called the worst meeting he's ever had. It turned down "Yellowjackets" for being too similar to "Euphoria." And it lost out on an absolute cash cow when it didn't pick up "The Walking Dead."
As with "Breaking Bad," HBO's loss on "The Walking Dead" was AMC's gain. Now, HBO eventually found its zombie show with "The Last of Us" (even if it's substantially different than "Walking Dead"), but it missed the chance to be near ground zero of the 2000s and early 2010s zombie resurgence.
Why? According to "Walking Dead" executive producer Greg Nicotero (speaking in a 2012 interview with the Huffington Post), HBO had some concerns about the material. Specifically, the network thought it was too violent!

This post contains spoilers for the "Walking Dead" franchise.
Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore's "The Walking Dead" comic book series begins in the heart of chaos. Rick Grimes, a deputy shot in the line of duty, wakes up from a coma and finds himself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. This shock of witnessing the world on the brink of collapse is superseded by the urge to survive, which leads Rick to a group of survivors. One would think that reuniting with one's family would be a happy occasion, but a nation overrun with zombies proves to be the cause of unimaginable grief and heartbreak. Indeed, after Rick reunites with his wife and son, a series of everyday obstacles and moral dilemmas await him, forever changing the man he used to be when he woke up from his coma.
Kirkman, however, does not tell us how the zombie apocalypse came to be.

Has there ever been a more bonkers superhero than Deadpool? Equal parts violent and zany, this lethal mercenary, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth," first appeared in the "New Mutants" comic series in December 1990, albeit as a villain. Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) went on to star in his own mini-series. He eventually gained notoriety for his dark humor, meta-commentary, and affinity for breaking the fourth wall. Over the years, Deadpool has teamed up with or battled alongside Marvel's hero gallery and has since become one of the brand's most popular characters. In fact, according to Gitnux Marketdata Report, he's the most liked character on Facebook. So take that, Iron Man!
The release of 2016's "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds as Wilson, further cemented the character's popularity. Uniquely, this was the actor's second stint in the role, though the less said about his...

The Walking Dead #3 foreshadowed Rick losing his hand to the Governor, which occurred in Walking Dead #28, and proved to be one of the most pivotal moments of the series' early run. The loss of Rick's hand elevated the Governor as a major villain, and in the process, laid a foundation for the excessive brutalities of subsequent antagonists in the series. Rick's adversity, with the loss of his hand being just one of many tragedies he suffered throughout the series, defined his character, and in many ways, Walking Dead as a whole.
The Walking Dead foreshadowed one of its most gamechanging moments at the very beginning of the series, as one of the earliest issues featured Lori Grimes fretting over her husband Rick's hand – the same one he would lose, just over two dozen issues later, when he was captured and maimed by the series' first arch-antagonist, the Governor.

Upon its first arrival on our screens, The Walking Dead, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, felt like it had the potential to become a dominant franchise for years to come. Despite those suspicions, no one could have quite foreseen just how large this franchise would get, with millions of fans across the globe tuning into and regularly rewatching the myriad of Walking Dead-related media, creating a fandom to rival the very biggest. From its highly-celebrated pilot episode to now, The Walking Dead franchise has rightly accumulated enormous praise and, as with any show of this caliber, spin-offs were inevitable. One such spin-off that has seen similar success to its source material is Fear the Walking Dead, which premiered back in 2015 to great public and critical acclaim.

The episode of The Last of Us without any "zombies" in it managed to pull off something that The Walking Dead's co-creator always wished he could achieve. Robert Kirkman recently told fans that he hoped to have a volume of The Walking Dead comic without any zombies, but it never came to fruition.
In the issue notes for The Walking Dead Deluxe #60, Kirkman comments that he, "eventually wanted to do a whole volume without Any zombies. I think I did more than a few issues here and there, but I don't think I ever got a full volume without any." No zombies in a zombie book works when the story focuses on the survivors instead of the threat. This is why The Last of Us can give audiences installments like "Long, Long Time," the episode of a zombie show that lacks zombies. While The Walking Dead co-creator never achieved...
